Coffee Costa in the UAE adds camel milk to menu

Latest Update: August 14, 2013 10:03 am

Customers at Costa Coffee shops across the United Arab Emirates can now ask their baristas to use camel milk instead of cow's milk in their drinks.

The British brand has become the first international coffee shop chain to offer camel milk as an alternative to cow's milk - a new feature that points to the increasing acceptance and revival of a traditional Bedouin staple which had been gradually displaced by the popularity of Western cow's milk.

Costa Coffee's new feature follows not long after the Ritz-Carlton Abu Dhabi Grand Canal hired a "camel milk mixologist" to create non-alcoholic cocktails based on the protein-rich milk to coincide with Ramadan.

Cocktails were created with freshly muddled mint, strawberries and milk for Middle Eastern-style milkshakes.

The mixologist was also on hand to create bespoke cocktails and even make camel milk and food pairing suggestions.

Customers at the 30 Costa Coffee outlets in Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Ras Al Khaimah can now ask baristas to use camel milk in their coffees.

To launch the new ingredient, the company has also developed a new Strawberry Camel Milk Cooler, a blend of fresh camel milk, strawberry and vanilla.

Camel milk is ideal for those who are lactose intolerant, contains up to 50 percent less fat than cow's milk, and is high in vitamin C and calcium, says Costa Coffee.

It's also said to be the closest animal-milk substitute to human mother's milk. - AFP/Relaxnews, August 14, 2013.

Bale keeps mum over Real Madrid reports

Posted: 13 Aug 2013 07:21 AM PDT

August 13, 2013

Tottenham Hotspur winger Gareth Bale has refused to comment after being quizzed by reporters over speculation linking him with a record-breaking transfer to Real Madrid.

The 24-year-old is reportedly on the brink of a move to the nine-time champions for a fee that could eclipse the US$123.6 million that Madrid paid Manchester United for Cristiano Ronaldo in 2009.

Several Spanish television crews and photographers watched Bale train with Wales in Newport yesterday, but when asked to speak about the reports, he replied: "I'm really sorry, now's not the time to talk."

Bale has not played for Spurs for over a month due to buttock and foot injuries and has been ruled out of Wales' friendly against the Republic of Ireland tomorrow due to his foot problem.

However, he is expected to attend the match at the Cardiff City Stadium. – AFP, August 13, 2013.

FDA approves GlaxoSmithKline’s HIV drug Tivicay

Posted: 12 Aug 2013 05:16 PM PDT

August 13, 2013
Latest Update: August 13, 2013 09:12 am

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said on Monday it has approved GlaxoSmithKline Plc's drug Tivicay to treat the most common strain of HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.

The once-daily drug, known generically as dolutegravir, belongs to a novel class known as integrase inhibitors that block the virus from entering cells.

Tivicay is owned by ViiV Healthcare, an HIV joint venture between GSK, Pfizer Inc and Shionogi & Co Ltd in which GSK is the largest shareholder, with a 76.5 percent stake.

Analysts on average expect sales of the drug to reach about $900 million by 2017, according to six analysts polled by Thomson Reuters.

Tivicay can be used to treat infected adults who have been treated with other drugs or are new to treatment.

The FDA also approved the drug for use in children aged 12 years and over, who weigh at least 40 kg (88 lbs) and who have not received treatment with a drug that has the same mechanism of action.

About 50,000 people in the United States are infected with HIV each year and about 15,500 died in 2010, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Common side effects of Tivicay in clinical trials included insomnia and headache. Serious side effects included allergic reactions and abnormal liver function in patients who were also infected with hepatitis B or C.

Patients received either Tivicay or Merck & Co's Isentress in combination with other HIV drugs; or they received Atripla, a fixed-dose combination of three HIV drugs made by Gilead Sciences Inc.

A fifth trial evaluated the safety of the drug in children.

Last week the FDA approved Alere Inc's HIV test which is designed to diagnose HIV infection earlier. - Reuters, August 13, 2013.

Glee musical planned

Latest Update: August 13, 2013 04:50 pm

Glee is moving from the small screen to the stage. Again.

Following in the footsteps of the Glee Live! concert tour, a live stage musical of the television hit, which has been renewed for two seasons, is in the works.

21st Century Fox Television chairman and CEO Gary Newman revealed the plans for the stage musical last week.

"We launched a live stage business with a sold-out arena concert tour in 2011, and now a live stage musical is in the works," Newman said during a presentation. Glee will premiere its fifth season on Sept 26, a week later than its original premiere date, which was pushed back because of series star Cory Monteith's death. - Reuters, August 13, 2013.

Carole King musical finds its star

Latest Update: August 13, 2013 08:45 am

Jessie Mueller will star as Carole King in the new musical based on the "Tapestry" legend's transformation from a Brooklyn teen into a rock 'n' roll star, the show's producers said Monday. Entitled "Beautiful—The Carole King Musical," the show is moving up its debut from 2014 to this winter. It will now begin previews on Broadway at the Stephen Sondheim Theater on November 21, 2013, with an official opening night following on January 12, 2014.

Mueller was nominated for a Tony award for her performance opposite Harry Connick, Jr. in 2011's "On a Clear Day You Can See Forever." She has also appeared in "Nice Work If You Can Get It" opposite Matthew Broderick and in Roundabout Theater Company's revival of "The Mystery of Edwin Drood."

"Beautiful" will focus on King's highs and lows, which include both the chart-topping success of "Tapestry" and the break-up of her partnership with and marriage to Gerry Goffin. It's a meaty, potentially star-making role for an up-and-comer like Mueller.

It's also a testament to the continuing popularity of juke box musicals like "Jersey Boys," which looked at the rise of the Four Seasons, and "Motown," which presented a sanitized version of Berry Gordy's life story.

"Beautiful" features a book by playwright and Oscar-nominated filmmaker Douglas McGrath ("Bullets Over Broadway") along with songs like "You've Got a Friend" and "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman" that were written by King along with collaborators like Goffin, Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil.

“Fifty Shades” E.L. James debuts at No. 1 on author earnings list

Posted: 12 Aug 2013 05:09 PM PDT

August 13, 2013
Latest Update: August 13, 2013 09:00 am

Britain's E.L. James, the writer of the "Fifty Shades of Grey" series of erotic novels, has made it onto the Forbes list of the world's top-earning authors - landing in first place.

James, a former television executive, surpassed regulars on the list, including James Patterson, Danielle Steel and Stephen King, with estimated earnings of $95 million in the year to June 2013, thanks to the titillating trilogy.

"The e-book format was a key factor, giving readers an easy way to purchase sex-filled sequels - and a discreet way to read them in public," according to forbes.com.

Former No. 1 Patterson came in second with earnings of $91 million, while Suzanne Collins, the author of "The Hunger Games" and the five-book series "The Underland Chronicles," was a distant third at $55 million.

The 2012 "The Hunger Games" blockbuster film, an adaptation of the novel, grossed $684 million worldwide.

Fox TV talk show host Bill O'Reilly, the author of "Killing Lincoln" and "Killing Kennedy," came in fourth with $28 million and Steel, with 128 book titles to her credit, was No. 5 with $26 million.

Dan Brown's "Inferno" was the best-selling book of 2013 so far, putting him in ninth place with $22 million. King just made it into the top 10 with earnings of $20 million. The hit U.S. TV series "Under the Dome" is based on King's science fiction novel of the same name.

Forbes based its rankings on estimates on sales data, publishing figures and industry sources. The full list can be found at http://www.forbes.com/sites/jeffbercovici/2013/08/12/the-worlds-top-earning-authors-with-50-shades-e-l-james-debuts-at-no-1 - Reuters, August 13, 2013.

Anwar akhirnya menjadi Presiden PKR?

Posted: 12 Aug 2013 04:30 PM PDT

August 13, 2013

We don't need a 'sleeping beauty' ."

Sekiranya dituduh Wan Azizah sebagai 'sleeping on her job', apakah Anwar juga 'sleeping on his job', kerana sudah tentunya pasangan suami-isteri ini berbincang sesama sendiri mengenai hal parti sebelum sesuatu keputusan diambil.

Sekarang dilaporkan Azmin berhajat hendak menjadi presiden.

“Don’t let your friend come. Don’t want your friend to go through all this.”

Lim Ka Ea is a traveller who sees travel as the answer to all the world's woes. Writing is a grand love. Ka Ea has had NGO and legal experience.

My first memory of her was how small she was.  Her pale and blemish-free skin looked as if they had not seen a day of light. Her colour-treated hair was always held back neatly in a high ponytail.

She was well-groomed as how aestheticians should be - her eyebrows were shaped perfectly and her eyes enhanced with kohl and eye shadow. I was pretty sure I had the right visual when her name was brought up by Megan, my aesthetician.

"Poor Kathy. She looked the type who never had to do a day of hard labour.  This must be really hard for her," I said to Megan. I was lying flat on my back with my eyes closed while Megan performed my monthly facial treatment in her home in Petaling Jaya.

I normally loath the idea of participating in perfunctory conversations with my hairdresser and manicurist but for some reason, I like talking to Megan. Perhaps she comes across as someone who is sincere and not exploitative like many other professionals relying on commission.  That day's conversation was particularly interesting and I couldn't take my mind off it.

"She told me that short of being whipped and chained at the ankles, it was exactly like those slaves you watch on the movies. I mean, can you imagine this happening now?" I could sense repulsion in Megan's voice as she moved on to give me a shoulder massage while the mask on my face slowly hardened.

Kathy and Megan used to work together at a beauty spa in an affluent neighbourhood in Kuala Lumpur. I got to know Megan when I used to patron the spa and she was my aesthetician.

Slightly more than a year ago, Megan made a leap of faith by leaving the spa to set up her own beauty parlour at home. She said she had enough of slogging away six days a week for someone else.

Her former boss used to go around asking all the commissioned aesthetician what they thought of the five-digit Rolex watch she had just bought on a shopping trip to Hong Kong.

I left the spa and followed her.

The conversation about Kathy came about when I asked Megan whether she had heard of those farming programmes in Australia where people go pick strawberries and apples. "They seem to be really popular," I said.

She gave my face a quick inspection after she completed her usual cleansing routine. "You're not getting enough sleep and you need to drink more water," she said before she proceeded to answer my question. "Uh-huh. Why? Are you interested?"

"Oh no. I have a friend who's thinking of taking a year off from work to do this. Someone else I know wants to do the same thing too. It's just funny that two people said the same thing to me in less than a month." I grimaced as she extracted the acnes on my forehead.

"Do you remember Kathy? She was one of the aestheticians at the spa. The really small girl, fair skin? She's working in a strawberry farm in Australia now."

I was expecting Megan to tell me how Kathy was enjoying the farm fresh air and stuffing herself with strawberries as big as cikus while plucking them. I was wrong because for the next hour or so, Megan revealed the harrowing story of how her friend had left Malaysia to work like a slave in a foreign country.

According to Megan, Kathy left with a group of friends. She wasn't alone. Like Megan, Kathy was probably fed-up with her work at the beauty spa and wanted something more lucrative.

An agent told them they could each easily earn RM10,000 a month by just picking fruits from a farm in Australia. Such opportunity seemed too good to pass and they weren't really convinced until they were shown photos of the farm and accommodation. Everything looked lovely and sounded easy.

Working in Australia meant they had to obtain a working visa and this was where the agent came in. Apparently, each of them paid about RM7,000 to the agent to sort out their paperwork.

It seems that a few days before they were to depart to Australia, they were told that their working visas were not ready and they would have to leave on a tourist visa while their agent would continue to work on getting them the correct paperwork.

Perhaps they did not want to waste their plane tickets or perhaps they did not want to postpone an opportunity for a good income, as many of them had by then presumably quit their jobs and were left with no income. I could only presume such an investment might have cost some of them their life savings.

Whatever reason it was, they left for Australia more than four months ago. Before leaving, they were told to delete the agent's phone numbers from their phones.

"Kathy told me she has muscular legs and her skin is tanned now. She said she's ugly now. She has to squat on her feet to pluck strawberries for about ten hours a day without much break and under the hot sun. She sent me photos of the farm and you can't see the end of the strawberry beds. It's that far. She said it's very tough for her. She cried every night for a month when she first started," Megan told me. "Kathy said she never thought something like this would ever happen to her."

I know.  Normally you only hear of such abuses happening to Cambodians, Indonesians and Burmese. Not Malaysians.

Kathy told Megan that when they arrived at the farm after hours of driving from the city, they were brought to their accommodation. They were shocked by the condition of the place.

It was filthy, smelly and filled with all sorts of junk. It was obvious that decent living condition wasn't part of the deal. They spent days cleaning and clearing up the space to make it habitable. By then, the thought of being victims of a scam had slowly crept in since the reality of the place did not match the photos that were shown to them back at home.

For the first month or so, they could not pick the strawberries because it wasn't time for harvesting yet and because they would only be paid for each basket of fruits picked, they were not able to earn any income right away.

On top of that, they had to pay for their own lodging and food. Apparently, mattresses were rented out at A$3 per night by the farm owner. Kathy said that this information was never disclosed to them by their agent. With no income, their expenses accumulated quickly and soon enough, they found themselves in debt. On a tourist visa.

"Why don't they report this?!" I sounded angry and to be honest, a tad judgmental.

"Kathy said she doesn't want trouble. In the beginning, when they complained to the owner, he told them that they are free to go as long as they pay off their debts. Kathy said she has no choice but to wait and pick as much fruits as she can so that she can earn some money, clears her debt and leaves the farm. Also many of her friends want to earn back the money they had spent to pay the agent," Megan said.

"Kathy told me that most of the workers there are Malaysian, Chinese and Thai. Apparently, the owner doesn't want to take anyone from Hong Kong because they are known to be vocal and they will stand up and fight. You knowlah, we Malaysians are quite submissive. Always too scared to cause trouble."

I couldn't help but think that the combination of not wanting to worry her family and the fear of humiliation and being judged by them could partly be some of the reasons why Kathy had kept this from the authorities. I wondered whether I would have done the same if I was stuck in a situation like this.

Before we ended my facial session, I asked Megan to get information from Kathy on the agent and the farm. "I want to warn my friends about them," I said. Megan nodded in understanding.

On the same night while at home on the internet, I found out that the Australian High Commission is aware of such scam. They had posted a warning against fruit picking/harvesting scam on their website.

According to them, you can detect a scam if you are promised a quick working visa, if you receive an email (especially one that does not address you specifically) offering you either a guaranteed income or job, if a job advertisement requires you to send a fee to receive your start-up materials, if an advertisement only gives you a post office box address, and if the fruits do not coincide with the harvesting season.

Later that night, I received a message from Megan. Kathy had given her some vague information on the agent and the address of the farm, which appears to be situated in Western Australia. No useful information turned up when I did a search of the agent's company and the farm address on the internet.

Before I called it a night, I received another message from Megan. It read "Kathy said don't let your friend come. Don't want your friend to go through all this."

If you suspect you might have been a victim of such scam, please report to the local police or at www.scamwatch.gov.au.
