Traditional dishes score at this buffet

The Johor Laksa caught my eye, and that was a satisfying start to my Ramadan buffet dinner at the Kitchen Art Brasserie at the Empire Hotel Subang. The thick fish curry for the laksa was steaming hot, delivering all the right spicy notes and flavours.

I went on to the dark, tender knobs of spiced beef in the Rendang Tok , with pulut kukus, and the excellent serunding daging with the lemang. I spied the Gulai Ikan Tongkol at the same table, but the nasi dagang had finished. I didn't want to wait for a refill and had the light, creamy gulai with the pieces of tuna that were well soaked in it. That was delicious.

I liked the Kai Lan with Ikan Masin, which still stayed green and crunchy, with the aroma and taste of fried salted fish in it.

I had a chunk of the Ekor Lembu Masak Ketumbar which was smothered in a gravy spiced with coriander, and the meat fell off the bone. This was good too.

The freshwater prawns, well spiced and scented with lemongrass, turmeric and turmeric leaves would have tasted better if they had been served hot, likewise the Sup Gearbox, which had straw for you to slurp up the bone marrow.

The Seenak Sajian Tradisi Desa, as this buffet is called, has 12 stalls outside on the terrace serving ever popular Roast Lamb, Ikan Bakar, Beef and Chicken Satay, Murtabak and Roti Canai, Claypot Yee Mee, Lok Lok, Ice Kacang and more.

I had also spotted the Goreng stall outside, and it had my favourite fried cempedak, and kuih kodok. Then I went to the dessert table and was offered some pulut hitam by a waiter who wanted to put  vanilla ice cream into it for me. I stopped him. It was nice on its own, with a touch of salt in it.

I shared some Akok, a soft, eggy dessert from Kelantan and Lipat Pisang with a friend. At the dessert table too was a selection of kuih and cookies, tapai pulut and ubi kayu, pastries and cakes. A more brilliant sweet ending were the mangosteens placed on a block of ice at the buffet table. They had been chilled right through, and I couldn't stop eating them.

A ghazal band plays throughout the evening, delivering some contemporary numbers, as well as a Cantonese song or two.

Japan lodge complaint over Korean banner

Posted: 29 Jul 2013 01:10 AM PDT

July 29, 2013
Latest Update: July 30, 2013 12:10 am

South Korea's strained soccer relations with Japan have been damaged further after a banner unfurled by the home team's fans in Seoul yesterday during a regional tournament stoked political tensions between the two.

Fans at the East Asian Cup game at Jamsil Stadium unfurled a massive banner that read: "A nation that forgets its history has no future" in an apparent reference to what many South Koreans see as Japan's unwillingness to acknowledge its wartime and colonial excesses.

The two countries were also at the centre of a diplomatic row at the 2012 London Olympics when footballer Park Jong-woo held up a sign referring to a territorial dispute while celebrating South Korea's 2-0 win over Japan in the bronze medal game in August.

"I was hoping something like this would not occur this time, so it's unfortunate," Japan's Kyodo News quoted Japan Football Association president Kuniya Daini as saying today.

"We ask the East Asian federation to thoroughly investigate the matter and act in the appropriate fashion."

Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said the incident was "extremely regrettable" and the Japanese government "will respond appropriately based on FIFA rules when the facts are revealed".

The Korean Football Association (KFA) said: "We are still investigating the matter. We have no official statement now".

Local media reported that staff at the stadium tried to prevent South Korea's hardcore fans group, the Red Devils, from unfurling the banner, which stretched across several sections of the upper deck behind one of the goals.

The banner was then removed by stadium officials, which prompted a second-half "cheering boycott" by the Red Devils, who remained silent for the rest of the game.

Earlier this year, the International Olympic Committee issued a warning to Korea's Olympic Committee over the incident in London.

The player, who was handed a sign that read "Dokdo is our territory" by a fan, was forced to skip the medal ceremony and was later banned by soccer's governing body FIFA for two games and fined 3,500 Swiss francs (about RM12,000). - Reuters, July 29, 2013

Indian Grand Prix faces axe in 2014

Posted: 29 Jul 2013 12:29 AM PDT

July 29, 2013
Latest Update: July 29, 2013 11:29 pm

The Indian Grand Prix is likely to be dropped from next year's Formula One calendar as Russia prepares for its debut, commercial supremo Bernie Ecclestone said.

"Is India going to happen next year? Probably not," he said at the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Asked what the problem was with the race at Greater Noida, near New Delhi, the 82-year-old British billionaire replied: "Very political."

Ecclestone, who has run Formula One for decades, draws up the calendar and usually presents it to the governing International Automobile Federation to be rubber-stamped in September.

He currently has a possible 22 races jostling for space on the calendar with teams expressing a strong preference for a maximum of 20.

Russia, with a debut race pencilled in for the Black Sea resort of Sochi towards the end of next year, and a grand prix in New Jersey are the two novelties planned for 2014 with Austria also due to make a comeback after an 11-year absence.

India first hosted a grand prix in 2011 to positive reviews from the Formula One community and this year's is scheduled for Oct 27 as the 16th round of the 19-race championship.

The two races to date in India have both been won by Red Bull's triple world champion Sebastian Vettel.

There have been bureaucratic hurdles to overcome, however, as well as concern about finances and the sport's exposure to high local taxation.

Promoters Jaypee Sports International issued a statement last month attacking "totally baseless and malicious" media speculation about next year's race.

"Our agreement with Formula One Management is to hold F1 races at Buddh International Circuit (BIC) till 2015 and we are fully committed to do that," said Jaypee spokesman Askari Zaidi in that statement.

"There is no reason for us to give up hosting F1 races."

Next year's Indian Grand Prix was the subject of much discussion in Hungary, with teams recognising it faced problems but hoping they could be resolved.

"It would be a pity if for these (tax) reasons we don't go there," Sauber's Indian-born principal Monisha Kaltenborn said.

"India is an important market for partners who are already in Formula One or who could get into Formula One because of that market so it really would be a pity if we do not manage to sort out these problems." - Reuters, July 29, 2013

The Simpsons’ Simon, with terminal cancer, gives away millions

Posted: 28 Jul 2013 05:41 PM PDT

July 29, 2013

The co-creator of The Simpsons, Sam Simon, is giving away his fortune before he dies of colon cancer.

The nine-time Emmy-winning writer-producer says he is using his wealth to help shut down roadside zoos and abusive animal shows, fund a dog-rescue haven in Malibu, and fight hunger, reported the Hollywood Reporter.

According to The Daily Mail, Simon said: "The truth is, I have more money than I'm interested in spending. Everyone in my family is taken care of. And I enjoy this."

More than 20 years ago, Simon co-created the award-winning animated Fox series with cartoonist Matt Groening.

The upbeat Simon told the Hollywood Reporter that while chemotherapy used to make him feel better, those days are becoming more and more infrequent so now he wants to see the good use his money can do.

A Stanford graduate raised in privilege in Beverly Hills, Simon, who is currently not married and has no children, was given a three- to six-month prognosis in May.

He said he's getting joy in his final days seeing his fortune – tens of millions annually in royalties alone – go to good use.

His Sam Simon Foundation in Malibu is worth US$23 million (RM69 million), and other charities, like PETA, Save the Children and the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, have also been recipients of his largesse.

He said he enjoys giving to animals, and charities that work with dogs in particular, is because he is able to see the results quickly.

"One of the things about animal rights, which is not the only thing that I care about in this world, is that your money can bring success. I see results. There is stuff happening, really good stuff, every week. I'm not sure you get that with a lot of disease charities. If you were donating to environmental causes for the past 20 years, do you think your money is doing anything? Because I don't," he told the Hollywood Reporter.

"I want medical experiments on animals stopped. They don't do anything, and they don't work," Simon said of his future wishes, stated people.com.

"Veganism is an answer for almost every problem facing the world in terms of hunger and climate change." – July 29, 2013.

Ex-supermarket worker tops UK album chart

Posted: 28 Jul 2013 04:50 PM PDT

July 29, 2013

Jahmene Douglas, a former supermarket worker and talent show contestant, topped the UK album charts for the first time yesterday with "Love Never Fails", Britain's Official Charts Company said.

Swedish artist Avicii kept the top spot in the British singles chart for a second week with "Wake Me Up", which became the fastest selling single of the year a week earlier.

Douglas, 22, was a contestant on a TV talent show "The X Factor". His debut album features 10 tracks including Gospel interpretations of other artists' songs and a duet.

Douglas pushed Robin Thicke's album "Blurred Lines" into second place, while "Magna Carta Holy Grail" from U.S. rapper Jay-Z fell to third place.

In the singles chart, Avicii's continued success denied One Direction's "Best Song Ever" the top slot, depriving the boy band of what would have been their fourth number one single. The new track had to settle for number two instead.

Separately, the Official Charts Company said "Now That's What I Call Music! 85" had become the fastest selling album of 2013. – Reuters, July 29, 2013.

Brigitte Jones: Mad About The Boy

Posted: 28 Jul 2013 06:22 PM PDT

July 29, 2013

Bridget Jones makes her return to bookshelves in October but she may be over dating and dieting.

Author Helen Fielding, whose lovable heroine made it to the silver screen with Renee Zellweger, is herself now the mother of two. She told People Magazine, that Bridget, now 40, was exploring motherhood in the book out Oct 10 in Britain.

"Bridget is struggling with baby issues – that sort of baby panic," Fielding said. "It's going to be talking about babies and life and really the theme of it is expectation: the way life never turns out quite the way you expect."

Amazon offers this description: "Fielding introduces us to a whole new, enticing phase of Bridget's life, set in contemporary London, including the challenges of maintaining sex appeal as the years roll by, and the nightmares of drunken texting, the skinny jean, the disastrous e-mail cc, total lack of Twitter followers, and TVs that need ninety buttons and three remotes to simply turn on."

Fielding's 1996 novel, "Bridget Jones's Diary,'' and its 1999 sequel have sold nearly 20 million copies combined. – July 29, 2013.

Where are you Stalin?

Posted: 28 Jul 2013 10:55 PM PDT

July 29, 2013
Latest Update: July 29, 2013 05:26 pm

Datuk Zaid Ibrahim founded Malaysia's largest law partnership before focusing on politics. He was a minister in the Abdullah administration, was in Umno, PKR and last in KITA as its president.

 Dark days ahead

The ongoing attacks on the Chinese by former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and the powerful bloggers who are allied to him are picking up the pace. Although the Malays and the Chinese are not yet at war with each other, don't be too hopeful that such deliberate mischief will just fade away without consequences to the state of race relations in the country.

This development reminds me of Russia's infamous leader Joseph Stalin and the false accusations he made against the Crimean Tartars 90 years ago. Stalin justified their forced deportation from Crimea during the Second World War because they were supposedly aiding Germany, Russia's wartime enemy.

Stalin conveniently forgot that Crimea was then being occupied by both Russia and Germany, and naturally the occupying forces had forced the Tartars to enroll in their respective armies in the war effort. Only a few thousands joined the Germans while more than 30,000 joined the Russian Army.

It did not matter to Stalin that the Tartars were forced to take sides. He ordered their immediate deportation, which saw some 300,000 men, women and children bundled into trucks and trains to Central Asia.  Almost half of them perished along the way, which was deemed to be fitting punishment for their supposedly traitorous behaviour.

Leaders who are evil and cruel do not rely on the facts of history—neither do they care to understand the underlying reasons why people act in a certain way. Such leaders only want excuses with which they can justify their actions.

Hitler blamed the Jews for many of Germany's problems, although it was ridiculous to blame one group of people for the problems of the Weimar Republic. His obsession with the purity of the Aryan race had no basis in science and was not justified on any moral grounds, but he persisted with this mad idea of eliminating the Jews nonetheless. Evil leaders are like that. They are beyond comprehension, are more interested in causing harm and destruction and are moved to act in ways that are devoid of morality or common sense.

So I will not try to understand the thinking or reasons behind Dr Mahathir's attacks on the Chinese.

At the same time, the dangers of this new development must be taken seriously by the people of this country. We cannot afford to view the dangers posed by this kind of hate speech lightly. It would be tragic if right-thinking Malaysians failed to do something together to show the world that we reject this attempt to instill hate and fear among the various races. Malaysians must remain united and steadfast in rejecting racial hatred.

I am also surprised that Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim in his Press conference this morning did not see fit to condemn the observations made by his former boss or to reject such views.

Although Dr Mahathir is not in the Government anymore, he is still in Umno and should be more responsible in what he says. At the moment ethnic rivalries are just too sensitive for national leaders to ignore.

It is important that the Malay leaders in the Pakatan Rakyat show some solidarity with the DAP, and not just leave it to Lim Kit Siang to fend off the attacks on behalf of the Chinese community. Solidarity in the PR must transcend helping each another during the General Election—it must embrace defending the core values of our people.

If Dr Mahathir is using these hysterics to galvanise his forces for the upcoming Umno General Assembly, he is wasting his time. Umno leaders may be persuaded to be angry with the Chinese but they will not abandon Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

Self interests and self preservation hold sway deep in the recesses of the Umno mind, now and forever. Party members know that Najib will win regardless how much bad blood is poured into the arena, and they know that Najib is adept at taking care of them, just like he did with the electorate during the General Election.

In any event, the more hawkish the right-wing elements become, the more reasonable Najib and his team will appear. I believe the majority of Umno members will go with the moderate views of the Prime Minister. The country will not be governable any other way. - July 29, 2013.
