For those with ultra luxurious palates and budgets, the boutique is also offering an Exclusive New Year Hamper that comes with the Boite Gourmande; a bottle of 12-year-old single malt Glenlivet whisky; a tablette tasting coffret; a box of chocolate cigars; a bonbon box of 16 chocolates; and a mini tin of chocolate almonds for HKD2,370 (RM949).

Since opening his own chocolate boutique in Paris, he's since exported the brand to Japan, Hong Kong, China and Taiwan.

The special Chinese New Year coffrets like the Boite Gourmande, which costs HKD560, are available at the trio of Jean-Paul Hévin boutiques in Hong Kong.

Green shoots in Australia’s bush tucker boom

Posted: 02 Feb 2013 06:20 PM PST

"Bush tucker" are enjoying something of a renaissance Down Under.

SYDNEY, Feb 3 — Wild plants and meals of swamp wallaby, lizard, or wombat sustained Australia's indigenous people for tens of thousands of years before British settlers brought a radical change of diet.

But so-called "bush tucker" — the local fruits, shoots and creatures that also include kangaroo and crocodile — are enjoying something of a renaissance on dining tables Down Under.

Beryl van Oploo, a self-proclaimed "foodie" from central Australia's Gamilaroi people has just opened Sydney's first bush tucker café — offering a "rustic menu with a bush flavour" inspired by the knowledge of her elders.

There is a kangaroo pie with bush tomato sauce, native greens, and fruits and berries which most Australians wouldn't even realise they were able to eat.

"We always knew that there was food on the land and that's how we survived for many of thousands of years," van Oploo told AFP.

"The younger generation never took advantage of that, we just got caught up in whatever was given to us."

Van Oploo was raised by her aunt in a household of 17 children where resources were scarce and "we always had to survive off the land, even in my time".

"You went out and put a line into the river and caught a fish and cooked it on an open fire," she said.

Evan Yanna Muru takes people on "walkabouts" in the Blue Mountains to educate them about the Darug clan.

Local foods were a staple, not just to save money but for their central place in Aboriginal culture and beliefs.

"Bush tucker is very close to the culture because culture is the lore of the land and bush tucker is part of the land," said Evan Yanna Muru, who leads cultural hikes or "walkabouts" in the Blue Mountains west of Sydney, educating tourists about the local Darug clan.

"When the bush tucker's in season somewhere, that's where we are."

According to cultural lore, The Darug, who get their name from the yams or sweet potatoes that grow in the region, were vegetarians until a terrible drought withered the mountains and their "sky god" Baiame gave permission for them to eat meat sparingly.

So began a great tradition of possum-hunting, both for the meat and the pelt which was used to make cloaks and blankets to shelter from the bitter, snowy winters.

"The women would dig with the yam sticks to get all them yams down on the river flats, and the men would climb the trees and smoke out them possums," said Yanna Muru.

Their diet was rich in the vitamins and minerals of local plants and roots — a typical day would begin with water sweetened with banksia flower and a bread made from ground swordgrass seeds.

Between meals of possum or swamp wallaby, lizard, snake or wombat, the Darug ate tiny sour apples, sweet purple dianela berries and mambara, tiny lychee-tasting fruits squeezed out of a green skin.

Woodgrubs were highly prized, both for their flavour and unusually high fat content — 35 per cent compared with six percent for a kangaroo.

Warrabura, what Yanna Muru calls "bush chewing gum" — was chewed throughout the day. High in vitamin C and with a licorice flavour, the dark green leaves were considered both bush tucker and bush medicine.

Aboriginal people lived in delicate balance with nature, moving with the seasons, and eating what the land offered.

"It gives you a rich connection to country, it gives you meaning in your life, understanding, interacting with nature," Yanna Muru said of the connection between food and culture.

Woodgrubs are highly prized for their flavour and fat content.

Van Oploo's cafe is in central Sydney's Victoria Park, traditionally a meeting place for the local Gadigal people. What was once a natural waterhole has been transformed into a lake populated by ducks and native birds.

She runs a hospitality school for indigenous students marrying modern skills with bush tucker knowledge as a new generation of Australians seeks to reconnect with traditions stretching back some 40,000 years.

Visitors to Sydney Tower, which boasts 360-degree vistas of the city from its upper levels, can feast on crocodile chipolatas or kangaroo rump.

Celebrity chef Kylie Kwong is also experimenting with Asian-bush fusion cooking.

Pork and goji berry dumplings and stir-fried pasture-fed wallaby tail with black bean and chilli feature on the current menu at her popular Sydney restaurant Billy Kwong, along with a variety of native fruit sauces and local greens including Warrigal spinach and saltbush.

Van Oploo sampled the bush degustation at Billy Kwong and said it was a welcome sign of changing attitudes to Australia's native foods, with farms beginning to spring up as demand grows.

"For all of Australia I think we lost a generation whether we're white or indigenous or whatever, and I think now it's starting to turn around a little," she said.

"Every country has its own cuisine and I think it's time for us to do that as well." — AFP/Relaxnews

QPR survival hopes frustrated in 0-0 draw with Norwich

Posted: 02 Feb 2013 07:08 AM PST

LONDON, Feb 2 — A missed penalty from Adel Taarabt cost relegation-threatened Queens Park Rangers victory against Norwich City as the early Premier League kickoff ended in a 0-0 stalemate today.

Taarabt saw his second-half spot-kick saved by Norwich keeper Mark Gunn, who had bundled over striker Jamie Mackie in the area.

It was QPR's fourth league draw in a row.

Substitute Bobby Zamora also missed a late chance for Harry Redknapp's side while Gunn made a great save to deny Andros Townsend, one of several new signings to make their QPR debuts.

Bottom club QPR were indebted to keeper Julio Cesar in the second half when he made a fine stop from Robert Snodgrass's powerful shot from outside the area.

QPR are now five matches unbeaten in the Premier League but remain in 20th spot with 17 points from 25 games, three points behind Aston Villa, Wigan Athletic and Reading. — Reuters

Singapore introduces robot dog to keep seniors fit

LOS ANGELES, Feb 2 – Singapore inventors have created the country's first robotic dog to help the elderly stay active.

Eric, short for Elderly Rehabilitative Interactive Companion, aims to help take the boredom out of monotonous therapy exercises while also providing seniors some companionship, reports The Straits Times.

According to the report, the robot's developers at Singapore Polytechnic launched a yearlong pilot programme last February at Ling Kwang Home for Senior Citizens.

"I am more motivated to do the exercises now because it is such a marvel to see something inanimate react to us," said Lim Kok Leong, 92, who has lived in the home for more than two decades, writes The Strait Times.

Japanese researchers have also developed a teddybear robot designed to comfort the country's growing aging population by reading facial expressions and actions and responding to them.

Another cuddly Japanese invention is the high-tech baby seal Paro, which coos and flaps its flippers to ease loneliness among the elderly and prevent depression and even dementia, according to its developers. – AFP/Relaxnews

Brazil hotline, soap opera help bust Spain prostitution ring

BRASILIA, Feb 2 — A call home from an anguished daughter in Spain and images from a soap opera about human trafficking for sexual exploitation led a Brazilian mother to realise her daughter was in trouble.

So she called a sexual abuse hotline set up by Brazil's Ministry of Women's Affairs, prompting an international police operation that led authorities to break up a prostitution ring in the Spanish university town of Salamanca last week.

Spanish police raided a nightclub in Salamanca and freed the Brazilian and five other women who were forced to have sex with customers for US$20 (RM60), Brazilian authorities said yesterday.

Tipped off by a call to the Brazilian hotline last June, Spanish police raided a brothel in Ibiza and discovered 28 women of different nationalities who were forced to provide sexual services 24 hours a day. They lived confined to overcrowded rooms and were monitored with television cameras.

The raids highlight the plight of foreign women who are duped by promises of work and better living in Europe only to end up being forced into prostitution to pay off endless debts.

"They are mostly young, pretty and poor women who are promised work in Europe by traffickers who break their dreams," Brazilian Minister of Women's Affairs Eleonora Menicucci said at a news conference.

When they arrive in Europe, their documents are taken away and they are told they have to pay off large debts, she said.

"It is absolutely inhuman what they are doing to our young adolescents," Menicucci said.

The Brazilian government has made the sexual abuse hotline an international service that can be called free of charge from Spain, Portugal and Italy, the countries to which trafficked Brazilian women are mostly taken.

Justice Minister Eduardo Cardozo said human trafficking was a difficult crime to detect because victims were reluctant to tell what had happened to them. He urged them to come forward.

Human trafficking is such an "underground" crime that the government has no data to determine its dimensions, he said.

A soap opera now airing on television in Brazil has brought home the drama of human trafficking for Brazilians. The show, "Salve Jorge," is based on the real-life story of a Brazilian woman who was led to Israel and forced into prostitution. — Reuters

NEW YORK, Feb 2 — Deadline.com has revealed that John Goodman will star in a political series developed by online commercial giant Amazon. He will play one of four senators sharing a house in Washington in "Alpha House."

Goodman will play senator Gil John Biggs from North Carolina, a bon vivant with a strong sense of entitlement due to his former success as a basketball coach.

"Alpha House" is one of six original creations Amazon Studios started working on last December. The new studio has also ordered pilots for "Browsers," "Dark Minions," "Supanatural," "Those Who Can't" and "The Onion Presents: The News."

John Goodman might be doing a lot of TV but he is not neglecting his work on the big screen. Actress Kerry Washington wins big at NAACP Image Awards

LOS ANGELES, Feb 2 — Actress Kerry Washington was the big winner at the NAACP Image Awards last night, picking up awards for her roles in the slavery-era Western film "Django Unchained" and television drama "Scandal," as well as a special honour for professional achievement and public service.

But on a night that celebrated the successes of artists of colour, actor and activist Harry Belafonte struck a sombre note when he admonished the black community for failing to speak out in favour of gun control, saying "the group most devastated by America's obsession with the gun is African-Americans."

Washington received the best supporting actress in a movie award for her role as a slave in Quentin Tarantino's "Django Unchained" and best actress in a television drama for "Scandal," in which she plays a crisis-management expert.

"This award does not belong to me. It belongs to our ancestors," Washington said in accepting her award for "Django Unchained," which has received a mixed reaction from the black community for its portrayal of slavery and its violence.

Both Washington and "Django" co-star Jamie Foxx, who received the entertainer of the year award, thanked Tarantino for making the film.

"'Django' was an absolute blessing of a movie," Foxx said. "Thank you Quentin Tarantino for having the courage to do it."

"Django" failed to pick up the image award for best movie, losing to "Red Tails," a film about African-American wartime pilots.

The NAACP also honoured Washington with a special award for both her political activism, including her work on President Barack Obama's re-election campaign, and for being the first black woman in 40 years to star in a prime-time drama on network television.

"I stand here tonight on the shoulders of those who have blazed a path of art and activism," Washington said, mentioning Belafonte specifically.

Belafonte took the stage later to accept his own special award for his decades of political activism. He used his speech to implore the black community to support gun control, an issue that has received heightened attention since a December shooting at a Connecticut school killed 20 children and six adults.

"In the gun game, we are the most hunted. The river of blood that washes the streets of our nation flows mostly from the bodies of our black children," Belafonte said. "Where is the raised voice of black America? Why are we mute?"

The night's other winners included Denzel Washington, who won the best actor in a movie award for his role as an alcoholic pilot in "Flight," and LL Cool J, who picked up best actor in a TV drama for "NCIS: Los Angeles."

The NAACP Image Awards celebrate the accomplishments of people of colour in the fields of film, television, music and literature, and also honour individuals or groups who promote social justice.

The National Association for the Advancement of Coloured People, founded in 1909, is the oldest and largest civil rights organization in the United States. — Reuters

Myanmar festival celebrates new literary freedom

Posted: 02 Feb 2013 07:12 AM PST

YANGON, Feb 2 – Dozens of renowned international and local writers gathered yesterday at Myanmar's first international literary festival to celebrate the country's new-found freedom of expression.

Authors hailed the festival – supported by Nobel Peace Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi – as a breakthrough for creativity after years lost to stifling censorship rules under the generals who ruled the country for decades.

"There was no freedom at all before," said poet Saw Wai, who was jailed under the former junta for writing a satirical poem about the regime.

"As censorship has been abolished, we have become able to be more free and open," he said, adding that poetry and cartoons were becoming increasingly "bold" with their satire.

For decades censors vetted every article, book manuscript, photograph and illustration before publication, eliminating anything considered inflammatory or damaging to the nation's former military rulers.

But the quasi-civilian government that took office in early 2011 has effectively abolished direct censorship as part of the reforms sweeping the country.

Organisers of the Irrawaddy Literary Festival want to exploit Myanmar's new freedoms to encourage bolder writing and debate.

"When I saw how difficult it was to buy a book – new books or modern literature at all – that's what give me the idea," said event organiser Jane Heyn, the wife of the British ambassador to Myanmar.

"The main purpose of the festival is to provide a platform to exchange ideas, to exchange writing and discussion."

Around 25 international authors and some 120 local writers and poets are participating in the three-day festival at Yangon's Inya Lake Hotel.

In a scene that would have been unthinkable under the junta, visitors openly browsed Suu Kyi's books along with other literature at stalls and exhibition displays blanketing the waterside lawns.

Vikram Seth, author of "A Suitable Boy", historian William Dalrymple and China's Jung Chang, who penned the epic "Wild Swans", will join Suu Kyi – herself the author of several books – for a panel discussion today.

One debate on Friday was due to cover the future of freedom of speech with renowned poet-comedian Zarganar and dissident author Pe Myint on the panel.

"For many years we didn't have a chance to collaborate like this. We've never experienced an international festival before," Pe Myint said. – AFP/Relaxnews

Jane Austen House Museum opens 200th anniversary exhibition

LONDON, Feb 2 — Situated within the house that accommodated Jane Austen during her last eight years, the Jane Austen House Museum's 200th anniversary "Pride and Prejudice" retrospective runs until the end of May and celebrates the creation of one of Britain's best-known novels.

Included in the exhibition are not only original illustrations by Hugh Thomson but also personal correspondence sent from Jane Austen to her sister Cassandra, which refers to the novel as "my own darling child."

Timed to coincide with the 200th anniversary of the publication of "Pride and Prejudice" on January 28, an event commemorated throughout the year by special edition books, theatrical performances and festivals, the Jane Austen House Museum's bicentennial exhibition includes several additional events.

Visitors on April 1 will be treated to "Scenes from Pride and Prejudice" throughout the House and its garden, as performed by the Ruffled Umbrella theatre company.

A writing workshop on March 2 and repeated on April 27 is entitled "But Intricate Characters Are The Most Amusing" and studies the creation of relationships, characters and conflict in fiction; interested parties are advised to book ahead, as the earlier March date has already sold out.

The Jane Austen House museum is open weekends only until February 15, after which daily admission begins.

It can be reached by a train service that runs from London Waterloo station to Alton, 1.6km northeast of Chawton, by bus from Winchester, or via the A31 trunk road. — AFP-Relaxnews

Fathul Bari nafi tarik diri berdialog dengan Dr Asri

Posted: 02 Feb 2013 02:30 AM PST

Elak soal isu calon, pastikan BN menang pilihanraya umum, kata Dr Mahathir

Posted: 02 Feb 2013 01:37 AM PST

— Bernama

Juvenile thrills

Posted: 01 Feb 2013 04:54 PM PST

FEB 2 — January's come to a close, and as usual I've made it a point to go and see as many Malaysian films as possible and with the exception of "Wawa Semput", a sort of sequel-cum-spin-off of the box-office hit "Adnan Sempit" which came out on the day of my deadline for this piece, I've seen everything that's been released in January 2013. Looking at the trailers that precede the films, 2013 looks set to be another overkill year for Malaysian films, similar to the one we had last year.

If 2011 saw the boom with two films hitting the RM12 million box-office mark and many others comfortably grossing beyond RM5 million, 2012 saw no such thing in terms of box-office hits. There were still hits last year, but nowhere near the exhilarating numbers in 2011 and it's pretty obvious we were going downhill, and judging from the trailers that I've seen so far, we may be going even more downhill this year.

But, and this is quite a big but, January has surprised me with two pretty good and well-made films. So good are these two that even the awfulness of "Minyak Dagu", a horror film so lazy, boring, clichéd and predictable (though it's done pretty good business, raking in RM2.35 million so far after 18 days), didn't manage to dampen my spirits and hope for a better 2013 for Malaysian cinema.

The first good film was a Chinese film called "Paper Moon", which is a true-blue Malaysian production, but directed by and starring people from Hong Kong. Offsetting this Hong Kong-ness is the film's setting in Kelantan, and the story it tells of the tragic love life of a master Wau Bulan maker played by Hong Kong star Gordon Lam ("Ip Man", "Infernal Affairs") and the mysterious arrival of a young girl who looks just like his long lost love, both played by Hong Kong sex symbol Chrissie Chau.

It's a pretty good idea for increasing the film's export value, putting in recognisable Hong Kong stars alongside local actors in a Malaysian story, which I think has already paid off as the film has secured distribution with highly regarded company Distribution Workshop, who's handled international sales and distribution for major hits like "Flying Swords Of Dragon Gate", "Monga" and even notable arthouse titles like "A Simple Life" and "24 City".

But all of this is nothing if the film itself is terrible, and I think many will be surprised at how well-shot, emotional and affecting it all is, despite some obvious marketing gesture by including quite a few steamy love scenes involving Chau (which didn't survive the local censors' scissors, obviously). It is definitely an export quality movie, which is not something you encounter much here, trust me.

The biggest surprise though is how good "Juvana" turned out to be. Unless you've been living under a rock, "Juvana" was a popular TV series about kids trying to survive in a school for juvenile delinquents. There's the wrongfully accused kid, the corrupt warden, the alpha male school bully, the inspirational teacher and many other archetypes for viewers to identify with in the series that its success meant that it's only logical that a movie be made next to follow the further exploits of the characters.

Knowing how light and fluffy most Malay mainstream movies are, it's highly refreshing to see a local film, obviously targeted at the mainstream Malay market, that doesn't pull its punches. Just like "Songlap" and "Chow Kit" from recent memory, this is a gritty Malay movie with a dogged commitment to depicting the real. Using the template of prison movies combined with another common template of "ex-convict trying to lead an honest life but faced with society's prejudices" for its main subplot, "Juvana" offers so many thrills and emotions that it's unlikely that you'll ever be bored watching it. There's even a shocking scene of male rape (implied, of course) that will leave all the guys in the audience clenching their buttocks afterwards!

Despite its many sensational content, which is sure to get the Harian Metro-reading crowd's blood pumping, the movie is never less than serious about the issues it's trying to address, namely the futility and vicious cycle of violence in a world where the main principle is the survival of the fittest. The acting by the young leads are all very solid, but I think Adlin Aman Ramlie totally stole the show as the school's lead guard, blindsiding us at first with his take-no-shit attitude, only to later reveal more layers to his character, resulting in us siding more and more with him as the film progresses. Best Supporting Actor candidate for this year's Festival Filem Malaysia? I think so.

The movie only wobbles a bit towards the end, which is a bit of a shame since it's written, directed and acted with a surprisingly steady hand for most of its running time. But still, there's no going around it, even this early on in the year "Juvana" is already the Malay movie to beat this year. I'd be ecstatic if there are more to come with this kind of dramatic quality.

The Balo and Becks Show

Posted: 01 Feb 2013 04:45 PM PST

FEB 2 — Mario Balotelli and David Beckham would make a great comedy double act, don't you think? You can picture it now: some kind of modern-day Laurel and Hardy; let's call them Balo and Becks.

Balo and Becks — based in LA, I believe — roam the streets, with Super Mario getting up to all sorts of dubious mischief and unwittingly leaving a trail of chaotic carnage in his wake. Handing out fistfuls of fifty-dollar notes to complete strangers, setting off fireworks inside his house... you know the deal. A one-man demolition derby.

But then, wading serenely through the destruction, along comes Mr Smooth... rejoice everyone, it's Becks!

Flashing his toothy grin and bantering his charming patter —  always with a perfect show of good manners, naturally — Becks finds a way to enchant even the meanest of mean street enemies, the meatiest of mafia meatheads, and makes everything all right again. And as our heartthrob hero, he always gets the girl, of course.

The Balo and Becks show certainly dominated an otherwise dreary end to the January transfer window.

Roberto Mancini — understandably, inevitably — finally reached the conclusion that has been obvious to most people for a long time: Super Mario will never be tamed. A bundle of natural talent he might be, but a committed athlete he is certainly not.

AC Milan are currently really rather excited to have brought the wayward talent "home"; that excitement will soon turn to frustration.

Balotelli's personality will ensure, I believe, that his career is destined to be a tale of inconsistency and underachievement. Occasionally spectacular and often entertaining, but generally ineffective, or worse — I wouldn't be surprised if he's finished by the time he's 30.

That's a crushing shame because the Italian possesses enough ability to become one of the very best in the world; not quite as good as Messi or Ronaldo, maybe, but not far behind. He is capable of producing rarely seen moments of matchwinning brilliance. We know this because he has done it.

Sadly, those electrifying contributions are all too rare, because Balotelli just does not have the dedication to his profession or the commitment to his craft to produce his best on a regular basis.

It will never appear in more than tantalising flashes, because he does not demand the highest standards of himself. In Super Mario's world, long bouts of mediocrity are acceptable and it's always somebody else's fault.

Don't get me wrong; he will continue to win trophies (he already boasts an impressive haul) because his inherent ability will ensure that he always plays for major club after attracting managers who, like Mancini, believe they'll be able to coax the best out of him.

They will all fail because personalities do not change. If Balotelli was ever going to become reformed character, he would have done it by now.

The trait that unites all elite athletes in any sport — and by "elite" I mean those who perform consistently at the very highest level over a number of years — is an almost obsessive devotion to self-improvement.

Messi and Ronaldo might be poles apart in their personality and style of play, but they are both tireless workers who single-mindedly dedicate hour after hour to the simple task of making themselves better.

It's an old cliché, but you really do get out what you put in — and Balotelli, I'm afraid, does not put enough in.

That's quite a contrast to Beckham, who has just joined Paris St Germain — the richest club in the world — at the age of 37, having already represented Manchester United, Real Madrid and AC Milan.

He's also made more than 100 international appearances, captained his country, and played a major role in developing the world's most popular sport in the world's most culturally powerful country. Not to mention fronting a bid to host the World Cup, being awarded an OBE and carrying the Olympic torch.

Not bad for someone who is (or was) a very good player, but certainly not a world beater; certainly not in Balotelli's class, in terms of natural ability.

David Beckham is a shining example of what can be achieved by a moderate amount of talent if it is channelled in the right direction and combined with relentless commitment. He has always prided himself on being the first player on the training field every morning, and the last to leave every afternoon.

And that, despite his ascent into superstardom and the manipulative marketing methods that have been relentlessly applied to protect and enhance his celebrity status, remains the case.

Beckham is still the most dedicated footballer you will ever find and it is that quality — rather than his instant recognition as a global megastar — that has allowed him to prolong his career until now.

Beckham might not be quite the player he used to be. He has understandably lost the ability to cover every blade of grass with unstoppable exuberance and energy, but he can still play.

He is still fit, he still possesses a great right foot and he can still control the flow and tempo of a game. If he was nothing but a superstar without any of the substance that made him a superstar, he wouldn't be getting offers from the richest club in the world.

Beckham has always worked hard on his game and resultantly was able to make the most of his talent. Balotelli has not, and therefore will not.
