LONDON, June 21 — Roger Federer began his bid for a seventh Wimbledon title with a 7-6 6-4 6-2 win over Mikhail Kukushkin in cold and blustery conditions on Centre Court today.

The Swiss third seed produced a solid display to see off Kazakhstan's Kukushkin who served well throughout the match to give Federer a decent workout at the start of his bid for a 17th grand slam crown.

Federer raised his game to breeze through the first-set tiebreak 7-2 and he comfortably kept Kukushkin at arm's length to take his place in the second round. — Reuters

F1 engine clampdown to take effect in Valencia

Posted: 21 Jun 2011 08:28 AM PDT

LONDON, June 21 — A clampdown on engine mapping systems from this weekend's European Grand Prix in Valencia will affect all Formula One teams, Renault technical director James Allison said today.

Formula One race director Charlie Whiting wrote to the teams earlier to notify them that with immediate effect they could no longer change settings between Saturday qualifying and the race.

Further changes will be enforced from next month's British Grand Prix at Silverstone to prevent teams gaining aerodynamic performance by keeping exhaust gases flowing constantly through the rear diffuser even when drivers are not on the throttle.

The immediate move could hit champions Red Bull, who have qualified on pole position in all seven races so far this season and won five of them, but Allison said all would be affected.

"The FIA's note will cause all teams (whether or not they use a blown floor) to change their operation," he said in a blog on the Lotus-backed team's website.

By changing settings after qualifying, some teams may have been able to gain performance on the Saturday by running a more extreme system before readjusting it for the race.

"The headline changes for the Silverstone GP are as follows: when the driver lifts his foot fully off the throttle pedal, then the ECU (electronic control unit) maps must be set up so that the engine ... closes the throttle," noted Allison.

"Previously it was possible to configure the engine maps to leave the throttle open and reduce the engine power by other means.

"Finally, with immediate effect, it will no longer be possible to reprogram the ECU configuration between qualifying and the race in the expectation that this will discourage extreme ECU setups for qualifying."

Allison said Renault, who have pioneered a forward-exiting exhaust system that has helped them to two podium finishes so far this year, would have preferred not to have make changes until the end of the season. — Reuters

Concorde’s successor revealed at Paris Air Show

Posted: 21 Jun 2011 02:16 AM PDT

PARIS, June 21 –  International aviation group EADS has revealed a concept for a Concorde replacement which could allow travel between Paris and Tokyo within three hours.

The Zero Emission Hyper Sonic Transport (ZEHST) concept (picture), unveiled ahead of the Paris Air Show this week, uses rocket power to transport passengers above the Earth's atmosphere, dramatically cutting flight times.

It is powered by three engine types which would allow it to take off as a normal plane using jet engines, before using rockets to shoot into the outer atmosphere and supersonic "ramjets" when it reaches its cruising altitude, at around 32km.

Passenger jets today travel at an altitude of some 11km, some 36,000 feet.

With such a high altitude, the aircraft's ground speed would be more than twice that of the now-defunct Concorde, speeding around the planet at Mach 4 – four times the speed of sound, or around 5,000km/h.

All of the propulsion methods would be green, with the jet engines using biofuels and the rockets using liquid hydrogen and oxygen – according to EADS, all of this technology is in place, although an unmanned prototype is unlikely to appear before 2020.

The final product could be in the skies by 2050, EADS predicts, and although it's anyone's guess as to what Concorde's successor will look like when it is finally produced, the group is reported to believe that the design of the 1960s aircraft remains a strong base.

Boeing, the US rival of EADS-owned Airbus, is also planning a hypersonic jet.

Japanese supercomputer becomes world’s fastest

TOKYO, June 21 — A Japanese supercomputer has become the fastest in the world, making calculations more than three times faster than a Chinese rival, its developers said yesterday.

The K Computer has achieved 8.162 quadrillion calculations per second, or 8.162 petaflops in computer jargon, according to developers Fujitsu Ltd. and the state-funded Institute of Physical and Chemical Research, known as RIKEN.

In doing so K Computer overtook China's Tianhe-1A of the National Supercomputing Centre in Tianjin, which became the world number-one in November and is capable of operating at 2.566 petaflops.

The K Computer's performance was recognised by the Top500 List of Supercomputers released on Monday at the 2011 International Supercomputing Conference in Hamburg, Germany, Fujitsu and RIKEN said in a statement.

It is the first Japanese supercomputer since 2004 to become the world's fastest, a symbolic moment for a nation proud of its cutting edge technology.

NEC's Earth Simulator was the world's fastest machine between June 2002 and November 2004.

K Computer's developers say the machine will be powerful enough to tackle complex calculations relating to climate research and disaster prevention.

"Use of the K computer is expected to have a groundbreaking impact in fields ranging from global climate research, meteorology, disaster prevention, and medicine, thereby contributing to the creation of a prosperous and secure society," the statement added.

K Computer is still being configured and has been assembled since October 2010 at a RIKEN's facility in Kobe, western Japan, where it should be completed by June 2012, the statement said.

It is made up of 672 computer cabinets currently equipped with of 68,544 computer processing units (CPUs), Fujitsu and RIKEN said in a press release.

When finished, the machine will have more than 80,000 CPUs and be able to operate at 10 petaflops.

Fujitsu and RIKEN chiefs said in statements that the project, launched in 2006 with a total budget of about ¥112 billion yen (RM4.25 billion), had overcome supply chain difficulties caused by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami that devasted the country's northeast Tohoku region.

Fujitsu chairman Michiyoshi Mazuka said he was grateful to "our partners in the Tohoku region for their commitment to delivering a steady supply of components, even though they themselves were affected by the disaster."

RIKEN president Ryoji Noyori said: "I very much believe that the strength and perseverance that was demonstrated during this project will also make possible the recovery of the devastated Tohoku region."

Noyori, the 2001 Nobel laureate in chemistry, told a news conference later: "I am glad because the world number-one spot, by such an overwhelming margin, has proven that our country's industrial technology remains sound."

"After all, we must aim for the top in research."

The project's budget was slashed by ¥11 billion in late 2009 under a belt-tightening drive by the centre-left government.

A minister in charge of administrative reform asked at that time: "What is the reason for seeking to be the world number one? Can't you make do with second place?"

But the K Computer may find it hard to survive intensifying competition as a 1,000-petaflops supercomputer is under consideration in the United States while China continues to invest heavily in supercomputer development, the Yomiuri newspaper said. — AFP-Relaxnews

Grammy Awards ceremony set for February 12

Posted: 21 Jun 2011 09:08 AM PDT

LOS ANGELES, June 21 — The 54th annual Grammy Awards will take place in Los Angeles on February 12 and nominations will be announced on November 30, organisers said today. The dates are in line with past years' events.

As usual, the awards ceremony will take place at the Staples Center, and the nominees will be revealed during a televised one-hour concert special for a fourth year.

Both will be broadcast in the United States on CBS under a new 10-year deal that also includes a series of unspecified two-hour Grammy specials.

Next year's awards will be notably streamlined. The Recording Academy said in April that it would slash the number of categories to 78 from 109.

TV viewers will not notice anything, though, since only 10 or so high-profile winners are announced during the performance-heavy ceremony; the rest of the awards are announced beforehand during a fast-paced webcast. — Reuters

Amy Winehouse cancels entire tour

LONDON, June 21 — British singer Amy Winehouse, whose career has been blighted by alcohol and drug abuse, has cancelled all her scheduled concerts after she was jeered by fans in Serbia recently for a shambolic performance.

Winehouse, 27, sporting her trademark bouffant hairdo and figure-hugging dress, struggled to perform her songs and keep her balance at the gig in the Serbian capital Belgrade, and on some tunes the audience did most of the singing.

"Amy Winehouse is withdrawing from all scheduled performances," a spokesman said today.

"Everyone involved wishes to do everything they can to help her return to her best and she will be given as long as it takes for this to happen."

The Grammy-winning, chart-topping singer of hits including "Rehab" and "Love is a Losing Game" had been due to perform a series of European dates including Athens tomorrow and Bilbao on July 8.

The tour had been scheduled to wind up on August 4 in Portugal.

The news is a major setback for the artist and her entourage. Only three weeks ago she checked out of a rehab clinic and confidently looked forward to her upcoming tour.

Winehouse, who has struggled with addiction throughout her career, rose to fame in 2006 with hit single "Rehab" and won four Grammys awards in 2008 including best new artist and album of the year.

She was unable to attend the ceremony in Los Angeles because of legal problems, and she is yet to release a follow-up recording. — Reuters

British Library, Google put thousands of books online

Posted: 21 Jun 2011 02:50 AM PDT

A spokesperson for the British Library said the project was building on the library's "proud tradition of giving access to anyone, anywhere and at any time." — AFP/Relaxnews file pic

LONDON, June 21 — Pamphlets about Queen Marie Antoinette and an account of a stuffed hippopotamus are among 250,000 books being made available online in a deal announced yesterday by Google and the British Library.

Internet users will be able to consult the texts dating from 1700 to 1870, which have been digitised by the search engine giant and chosen by the library, which has one of the world's largest collections, they said in a statement.

The works are all out of copyright, thus avoiding problems Google has previously faced in the United States and France over its attempts to create a universal digitised library.

"Our aim is to provide perpetual access to this historical material, and we hope that our collections coupled with Google's know-how will enable us to achieve this aim," British Library chief executive Lynne Brindley said.

She said it was building on the library's "proud tradition of giving access to anyone, anywhere and at any time."

Among the first works to be digitised will be feminist treatises written in 1791 on Queen Marie Antoinette of France, the wife of King Louis XVI who was executed after the French Revolution.

There are also plans written by the Spanish inventor Narciso Monturiol dating from 1858 for the first combustion engine-powered submarine, entitled "A Scheme for Underwater Seafaring: the Ichthyneus or Fish-Boat".

The collection further features "The Natural History of the Hippopotamus, or River Horse", written by George Louis Leclerc in 1775, which tells the story of a stuffed hippopotamus owned by the Prince of Orange.

All the works will be available for text search download and reading on the British Library's website and at Google Books.

The cost of digitising all 40 million pages will be borne by Google, which has entered similar partnerships with Stanford and Harvard universities in the United States as well as in the Netherlands, Italy and Austria.

"This public domain material is an important part of the world's heritage and we're proud to be working with the British Library to open it up to millions of people in the UK and abroad," said Peter Barron, director of external relations at Google. — AFP/Relaxnews

Are we ready?

Posted: 20 Jun 2011 05:04 PM PDT

JUNE 21 — An effective democracy is a function of an active and informed citizenry. "Active"  in the sense that the people would stand up for their beliefs and "informed" in the sense that there is sound judgment involved — the ability to discern between an opinion and a fact, and a genuine call to action from inflammatory rousing.

We all have many different opinions about where Malaysia stands today, but I'm sure we can all agree that the Malaysia after the March '08 elections is a very different place.

All in all, there is a net gain towards democracy. But as we take our baby steps towards a much freer nation, I guess it is only fair if we ask whether our electorate is ready for that transition?

Many have often cited the proliferation of racist hurls as a sign that Malaysia has gone south. Every society has fringes and in a truly democratic nation, even the most racist demagogues are entitled to their fair share of free speech and they are as Malaysian as anyone else.

Why do you think racist provocations are so common in Malaysia? Because the perpetrators know they work. This so-called racial card rallies their base while pissing off the rest of the country.

And in the midst of being riled up, the detractors will join in the squabble by firing an equally passionate response of their own. The result would be an irresolvable duel of excessive passion.

Being privy to Malaysian politics, how much are you prepared to bet that it wouldn't atrophy to the usual name-calling and finger-pointing match where heat rather than clarity triumphs?

At the end of the day we all go back feeling satisfied that we have pitched our flag and taken a stand. Then tomorrow there will be another racial slur, and here we go again! So really, who is being hostage to whom?

In a multicultural society where wounds run deep, a nation that is so susceptible to combustion is something about which I would raise my eyebrows. We call our politicians the people's servants, eh? But that would only be true if the people are well informed in the issues that they are concerned about.

For job security, politicians need to win votes – and they will do what it takes to get them. It may sound Machiavellian, but this is the political reality. Both sides will have their own agendas to pursue and a failure to recognise that might yield misplaced loyalties.

On the other hand, while scepticism is definitely needed in a democracy, there is a fine line that separates it from cynicism. The former encourages reason for objection, while the latter is objection for objection's sake. And it takes sound judgment to draw that line.

Now, before I get caricatured as an anti-democratic Malaysian, hold your horses. I am not. Malaysia has tasted the "forbidden fruit" of democracy and there's very little chance that anybody can put the genie back in the bottle.

As we edge forward towards a more democratic nation, we need an electorate that can match the paradoxical nuances that this system exerts on us. Democracy is often messy. We might have to settle for compromises or maybe tolerate things that we do not like. It's a system that asks not only of what we will take but also of what we are willing to give.

So, are we ready for it?

Argentina’s fairest relegation?

Posted: 20 Jun 2011 05:00 PM PDT

JUNE 21 — What's the fairest way of deciding relegation?

In most football leagues around the world, a straightforward method is employed: the two, three or four teams with the lowest number of points at the end of each season are ejected, or occasionally entered into a play-off with the highest placed teams from the division below.

In Argentina, though, it's a lot more complicated: in the Primera Division, all results from the last three top flight seasons are added together to create a points-per-game "co-efficient" for each team, with the bottom two then going down automatically and the next two entering into a play-off with the third and fourth placed teams in the second division.

Critics say that the system is too confusing and is designed to ensure that the traditional big clubs, such as Boca Juniors and River Plate, never suffer relegation because they are always given an opportunity to recover from one poor season by improving their co-efficient over the course of the next two campaigns; if a big club finds itself in trouble, it has enough time to simply spend its way back to safety and avoid the drop.

The system is also often criticised for being unfair to newly promoted teams, who don't have the luxury of relying on previous seasons (because only top flight results count towards the co-efficient) and can therefore easily be relegated if their first season in the Primera is a poor one.

While there's a large measure of truth in those objections, it doesn't always work out like that. Recently promoted teams generally possess enough momentum and quality within their ranks to gather sufficient points to maintain status.

And the income disparities between teams are no longer large enough to give the traditional big clubs an automatic advantage over the course of three seasons.

Personally, although the system is quite confusing and takes a while to get to grips with, I like it because it punishes sustained mediocrity by relegating teams who perform consistently badly over the course of three years.

The fact that teams are given a chance to rectify one-off poor campaigns also relieves immediate pressure and theoretically encourages a long-term approach to team-building (not that you'd know it from the rapidity with which managers are hired and fired).

It also gives teams a chance to blood promising young players, safe in the knowledge that a few defeats in the short-term may not necessarily be too damaging if the experience gained at a young age helps those players to create a strong team in the next couple of years.

A common gripe in the English Premier League is that such-and-such a team is "too good to go down" or "didn't deserve" relegation, and it's true that an unavoidable sequence of unavoidable negative events (injuries, suspensions, refereeing decisions) can be enough to condemn a team to an unfortunate relegation over the course of one season.

But there can be no such complaints in Argentina — if a team performs consistently poorly over three seasons, there is little doubt that relegation is deserved.

That has been demonstrated by the current case of River Plate. The Buenos Aires club are historically the most successful team in the country, with 33 national titles under their belt as well as two South American Copa Libertadores titles and the 1986 World Club Championship.

But they have endured a lean spell over a number of years and, despite a slight resurgence this season, they now face a two-legged play-off against second division Belgrano after ending the recently concluded season fourth from bottom in the co-efficient. The first leg between River and Belgrano takes place on Wednesday night (8am on Thursday morning Malaysian time), with the return leg at River's enormous Monumental Stadium scheduled for Saturday.

Further proof of the system's strength came when a dramatic late twist was provided to the race to avoid automatic relegation as the regular season concluded this weekend.

Quilmes suffered relegation after finishing bottom of the co-efficient pile, but the identity of the other automatically relegated club is yet to be decided after Gimnasia La Plata and Huracan finished dead level with a co-efficient of 1.096 after both gaining 125 points from their 114 games over the last three seasons.

To further complicate matters, rather than the issue being settled by goal difference or head to head meetings, the two teams will now meet in a one-off play-off on Wednesday evening; the loser will be relegated, and the victor will join River Plate in facing another play-off against San Martin from the second division.

Gimnasia could have condemned Huracan to automatic relegation by gaining victory over Boca Juniors in their final fixture, and they came within seconds of doing just that before conceding an equaliser in the last minute of injury time (fittingly, former Argentina international and Boca legend Martin Palermo marked his last game before retirement by playing a key role in the goal, setting up defender Cristian Cellay with an open goal from two yards).

Gimnasia and Huracan both have very poor records over the last two seasons and were little more than mediocre in the preceding campaign, so whoever loses this week's play-off can't complain that they didn't deserve relegation — and perhaps that's a fairer system than ejecting a team from the league on the basis of just one season?

Wanita PKR lancar WAJAH 2 Julai dekati kaum ibu

Posted: 21 Jun 2011 03:04 AM PDT

Taib Mahmud dijangka jawab dakwaan rasuah esok

Posted: 21 Jun 2011 02:58 AM PDT

KUCHING, 21 Jun – Ketua Menteri Sarawak Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud berkata beliau akan membuat kenyataan rasmi esok mengenai dakwaan rasuah terhadapnya.
