Malaysia win SEA Games football gold

Posted: 21 Nov 2011 07:44 AM PST

JAKARTA, Nov 21 — Malaysia tonight beat hosts Indonesia to win the SEA Games football gold on penalty kicks after the two teams were tied 1-1 after extra time.

Malaysia won 4-3 on penalties, with skipper Baddrol Bakhtiar converting the winner.

Indonesia drew first blood at the Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium through Gunawan Dwi Cahyo, who scored with a header from a corner kick in the 5th minute, The Star Online reported.

Malaysia equalised in the 35th minute through Mohd Asraruddin Putra Omar with a sliding header.

In the penalty shoot-out, Gunawan failed to convert when it mattered, together with Ferdinan A.S. On target were Titus Bonai, Egi Melgiansyah and Abdul Rahman.

Mahalli Jasuli, Fandi Othman and Mohd Fadhli Shas were unerring for Malaysia before Ahmad Fakri Saarani stumbled.

Baddrol put the result beyond doubt with the fifth penalty.

China can conquer golf world, says Liang

HAIKOU, China, Nov 21 — Hosts China have every chance of causing an upset by outplaying some powerful major-winning lineups at this week's World Cup team competition at Mission Hills, according to Liang Wenchong.

Ireland, represented by the past two US Open winners in Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell, are the title favourites while Germany are likely to feature on the leaderboard with world No. 4 Martin Kaymer partnering Alex Cejka.

South Africa are also expected to mount a strong challenge with US Masters champion Charl Schwartzel combining with 2010 British Open winner Louis Oosthuizen.

"If China were to win, and I think we have a strong chance, it would be wonderful for the growth of golf in this country," Liang told Reuters in an interview ahead of the US$7.5 million (RM23.7 million) event that starts on Thursday.

"There is going to be a lot of pressure on Zhang Xin-jun and myself but at the same time we can use that as motivation. We should have a lot of Chinese supporters following us."

Liang, a 16-time winner in his career, was 95th in the world rankings in May but has since slipped to 252.

Zhang is down at No. 647 despite finishing tied for 13th in the WGC-Champions Tournament in Shanghai at the start of the month.

Huge impact

"This is going to be another good opportunity to promote golf in China," said Liang. "But win or lose the fact China is participating and the tournament is being held here will have a huge impact.

"There are many strong teams here like the German team with Kaymer, the Ireland team and there is the South African side who also have two major winners.

"We face a big battle if we are to win. If we can get off to a good start, that will be the key."

The 33-year-old Liang ignored drizzling rain to walk the host Blackstone course today.

"It's the first time I have been to Hainan Island to play golf and it is an excellent course," he said.

"It looks very special and there is a lot of volcanic rock so it is unique. This is a huge project here — we Chinese don't do things in small measures.

"It is an honour to be representing my country and I am very proud to have the China flag on my shirt," added Liang. — Reuters

LOS ANGELES, Nov 21 — Mila Kunis made a Marine's YouTube wish come true when the actress kept her promise to be his date at the Marine Corps Ball in Greenville, North Carolina.

Kunis attended the event on Friday night  at the Greenville Convention Centre with Sergeant Scott Moore, Access Hollywood reported. The event was closed to media.

Moore invited Kunis to the soiree in a YouTube video posted in July, from a base in Afghanistan.

"Hey, Mila. It's Sergeant Moore, but you can call me Scott," he said in the video. "I just wanted to take a moment out of my day to invite you to the Marine Corps Ball on November 18 in Greenville, North Carolina, with yours truly. So take a second, think about it and get back to me."

A message left with Kunis's publicist in New York was not returned yesterday.

Their date took place less than a week after Kunis' "Friends with Benefits" co-star, Justin Timberlake, escorted a Marine Corps combat instructor to a ball in Richmond, Virginia.

Timberlake, who publicly encouraged Kunis to accept Moore's invitation, received a similar proposal soon afterwards from Corporal Kelsey De Santis. On his website, the singer-turned actor called the November 12 Marine Corps Ball he attended with De Santis "one of the most moving evenings" of his life. — Reuters

Taylor Swift wins big at American Music Awards

Posted: 20 Nov 2011 09:03 PM PST

LOS ANGELES, Nov 21 — Country sensation Taylor Swift came up the big winner at the American Music Awards yesterday, claiming three trophies including the top honour, artist of the year.

She tied for most wins with British singer Adele, who also earned three trophies for female pop artist, best album with smash hit "21" and top adult contemporary performer.

But Adele, who came into the awards show as the most-nominated singer with four nods, lost artist of the year to Swift, who seemed genuinely surprised by the upset victory.

"This is one of the craziest things that has ever happened to me," Swift said. "I have no idea what I'm supposed to say. I did not think this was going to happen."

Along with year's top artist, Swift claimed AMA trophies for favourite female country artist for the second straight year, and she nabbed best country album with her "Speak Now".

Adele, who is recovering from vocal cord surgery, was not on hand to accept her awards.

Rapper Nicki Minaj was the night's other big winner with two AMAs in the rap or hip-hop category: favourite artist and best album for her "Pink Friday."

Minaj opened the show singing her smash hit single "Super Bass" in a metallic outfit that had two large speakers on her bottom, and after winning best hip-hop album for "Pink Friday" was overcome with emotion.

"This one could actually make me cry," Minaj said onstage before wiping away tears. "I can't believe this is happening."

Elsewhere, the AMA awards were split among numerous acts.

Rounding out the country awards with Swift were Blake Shelton for best male artist and Lady Antebellum best group.

Maroon 5 picked up the honour for best pop or rock group behind current hit "Moves Like Jagger," and Bruno Mars rounded out the pop category with an AMA trophy for best male artist.

Among R&B acts, Rihanna grabbed best album with "Loud," winning over ex-boyfriend Chris Brown and his "F.A.M.E." Usher was named favourite R&B male artist and Beyonce best female.

Finally, the Foo Fighters earned top alternative rock band, Jennifer Lopez was the top Latin artist, and Casting Crowns won for best contemporary inspirational act.

While awards are the major focus, the show brings out top acts to perform. Lopez put on two crowd-pleasing acts, one solo and the other with Black Eyed Peas frontman will.i.am.

Justin Bieber with his holiday song "Under the Mistletoe," had fans singing in the audience, and Enrique Iglesias with his anthem "I Like How it Feels" had them hopping to the beat.

Marc Anthony and Pitbull also rocked the crowd, and the show ended with LMFAO singing from their "Party Rock" album, dancing with Bieber, and stripping to their underwear.

The AMA awards is among the most widely watched of the annual US musical honours at the end of each year. Next up on the list of key honours are Grammy nominations, which will be announced on November 30. — Reuters

Artist Hirst’s diamond skull part of retrospective

LONDON, Nov 21 ― Artist Damien Hirst's diamond-encrusted skull sculpture will go on display as part of the first major retrospective of his career to be staged in his native Britain.

"For the Love of God", which fetched the then equivalent of US$100 million (RM317 million) in 2007 when it was sold to a consortium of investors including the artist himself, is one of Hirst's most famous and controversial works.

A life-size platinum cast of an 18th century human skull has been covered with 8,601 flawless diamonds, including a 52.4 carat pink stone which has been valued alone at £4 million (RM19.96 million).

Like much of Hirst's work, the sculpture is a commentary on mortality and death as well as market forces, although to some critics it amounts to little more than "bling".

The work will go on show in Tate Modern's cavernous Turbine Hall as a free display, but also accompanies a retrospective being staged in the same London gallery.

That exhibition, running from April 4 to September 9, 2012 and sponsored by the Qatar Museums Authority, will bring together more than 70 of Hirst's works, including a shark suspended in formaldehyde and a bisected cow and calf.

Also on display will be examples of other Hirst trademark pieces ― cabinets lined with medicine, spin and spot paintings and butterfly images.

The 46-year-old is considered one of Britain's most influential contemporary artists whose works and business acumen have made him rich.

He rose to prominence in the late 1980s and 1990s as the leading member of a movement known as Young British Artists, whose members were quickly accepted by commercial collectors around the world and the British art establishment.

Hirst has long divided critics between those who champion art that deals with death and the monetary value of painting and sculpture, and those who believe he is a canny businessman more than talented artist.

The retrospective at Tate Modern will be open during the Summer Olympics in London and is part of the London 2012 Festival which aims to showcase British art during the event. ― Reuters

Southern Africa seeks to unite its railways

Posted: 20 Nov 2011 06:43 PM PST

JOHANNESBURG, Nov 21 — Countries across southern Africa are pouring billions of dollars into overhauling their railways, hoping to ease the flow of exports and to boost their plan to create a common market.

Angola and Mozambique are reviving railways that had been destroyed during decades of civil war. South Africa has proposed tripling its rail investment to unblock bottlenecks in its exports of raw materials.

South Africa has even proposed laying a line across tiny Swaziland for freight trains to deliver coal exports.

"The expansion of our mining and resource processing industries, which are key exporters in our economies, is going to depend on the growth of rail capacity and improvement in productivity," said Public Enterprises Minister Malusi Gigaba.

"Rail is an intrinsically cheaper and more efficient form of transport for large volume, heavy goods that need to be transported over long distances," he told a regional rail conference recently.

Outside of South Africa's better developed system, the region's other railways are colonial inheritances designed purely to bring the riches of the continent's interior to sea.

The lines are often isolated, with few connections.

The 15-nation Southern African Development Community is expected to produce a blueprint for regional transportation plans, as part of its move toward eventually creating a common market.

In the meantime countries are pressing ahead on their own, with Chinese firms taking a leading role in the construction work.

One of the most spectacular projects would link Namibia's railways to the South Africa network around Johannesburg, by crossing Botswana's Kalahari Desert.

But not everything is running smoothly.

Botswana is looking to link to Mozambique's ports on the Indian Ocean by crossing Zimbabwe, rather than South Africa.

Namibia is building a line towards Angola, where no extension is planned.

"In the past few years, driven partly by the commodity price boom and the expansion of the mining sector, there has been a renewed interest in reviving the railway sector," said consultant Bo Giersing.

"The main challenge is not to finance the infrastructure provision, it is rather to achieve an economically viable and sustainable railway service."

And to get away from outdated methods, with inefficient rotation of stock and unnecessary transshipments.

Crossing borders also poses a major problem, with trains often stuck for two or three days waiting for Customs clearance. The goal is to reduce the wait to one hour.

"It is critical that we leverage rail to expand trade in the region," Gigaba said.

"We need to see how we can support the growth of rail transport in our neighbouring countries as scale will benefit us all."

Improving transport would do a lot for regional economies. For a landlocked nation like Malawi, transport accounts for 55 per cent of the cost of merchandise, said Bernard Dzawanda, head of the Southern African Railway Association.

Just as the region is moving toward integrating its rail lines, South Africa has thrown a new challenge into the mix: Pretoria wants to build new lines with a standard gauge track of 1.435 metres, which is seen as more convenient.

The region already uses the so-called Cape gauge, of 1.067 metres. — AFP-Relaxnews

Time for 1 Education

Posted: 20 Nov 2011 04:00 PM PST

NOV 21 — I don't care what colour skin you have, what colour your eyes are, or where your grandparents hail from.

I couldn't care less what, when, who and where you worship.

Neither am I bothered by how, when and where you like to party, or what turns you on.

What matters is your sincerity, and the work you have done in the name of this country and charity.

I grew up in a multiracial family. So much so I thought my father was Chinese, mother Punjabi and grandparents Malay until I was about four years old. The fact that they spoke in so many languages did not help me start talking as a kid.

I started talking quite late, simply because I didn't know which language to start with first. My grandparents, who were actually Chinese, were talking to me in Malay, when my father, who is actually a Malay, started talking to me in Chinese. My mother, who was and still is teaching English, completed the rojak by adding English to the mix.

I may have been "slow" to speak, but I was never confused. I didn't distinguish one from the other through skin colour.

It was only in school I started to learn about races, and how special I was to be so called mixed. They made it sound like I was cross bred when both of my parents were, and still are humans.

For me, school was where all the racial stereotyping began. Not at home. Why some are good in maths, in English, in sports, at debates or why some like sambal, why some soup and others dal all had to do with skin colour. I vaguely remember a theory of why different people smell, talk and eat differently.

If those days kids were so smart, can you believe how smart they are now, with all the improved milk formula, cereals and all?

I wonder if the Education Ministry will ever catch up.

There were three Chinese boys, seven Indian boys and the rest were all Malays in a class of about 40 during my primary school days. I used to ask my parents why there were so few Chinese and Indians in my class when I saw so many of them in the malls and in town. It didn't make any sense to me then.

It still doesn't make any sense to me now.

Everyone wants to be treated equally, as a Malaysian and all, but how many are willing to make sacrifices? Definitely not everyone.

Politicians are not ready to make unpopular decisions, or decisions that actually matter. But they don't mind making silly, unwarranted, flip-flop statements to the public. For instance, they scream 1 Malaysia, but our education policy screams 1,000 Malaysia.

Those who say they are Malaysians first and others second should not be fighting against a single school system. A Malaysian school is a school for those who consider themselves Malaysian first, second and last.

And the onus is on the government to make it attractive, and successful.

No one said that it would be easy, and judging by how brave our MPs are arguing in Parliament, I doubt we lack b***s to implement it.

Or so it seems.

We spend so much on a new palace, but why can't we build and maintain bigger and better schools for a single morning session? The government can then afford to teach our children extra languages, extra cultural lessons in the afternoon to create a more tolerant and dynamic society, no?

Use English in schools, and teach Malay as a language and stress its importance as a national language, and teach Mandarin and emphasise its economic relevance. No parent will object to that.

The Malay language will be given due recognition in time when our students, graduates are English proficient, and our nation reaps its reward as a developed nation.

I believe that our current education system needs total overhauling. Why? It is not only fragmenting our society, but our graduates are unemployable. Why keep and what good is a system that does that?

Prolonging its shelf life will only bleed the country dry.

It will not be easy and it should only get harder from here.

Political and social will is needed to carry such a reform, without which it will suffer the fate of PPSMI. We need leaders who are courageous, visionary, and willing to make unpopular decisions for the sake of many, and not those kowtowing to imbeciles who decide based on emotions and sentiments.

Those who scream violation of their racial rights should be sent to an uninhabited island, to live and interact with only their own kind.

They have no place in a multiracial, multicultural, multilingual country like Malaysia.

Bite the bullet and start planning now. Your alphabet salads (ETP, NKRA) depend on it.

Most importantly the nation's future will ride on its success.

Agama baru di pulau cinta

Posted: 20 Nov 2011 03:21 PM PST

Bagaimanapun, mereka meminta identiti diri dirahsiakan.

"Kami diwajibkan menghadiri sesi kaunseling individu sebanyak sebelas kali.

Kemudian, seorang demi seorang menceritakan kisah masing-masing.

Kata bapa, perlu tukar agama sahaja, tak perlu amalkan. Kemudian, bapa mula halang emak sambut perayaan berkaitan Agama Asal," seorang pekerja swasta menceritakan.

"Kemudian, suatu hari, bapa meninggalkan keluarga semasa saya berumur lima tahun.

TWU: Tubuh suruhanjaya siasat konsortium bas Transnasional rugi RM300j

Posted: 21 Nov 2011 02:32 AM PST

Posted: 21 Nov 2011 02:06 AM PST
