Guardiola lashes out at Barca bosses

Posted: 12 Jul 2013 03:12 AM PDT

July 12, 2013

Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola whipped up a media storm in Spain today by accusing his former bosses at Barcelona of trying to use coach Tito Vilanova's cancer illness to criticise him.

The 42-year-old, who won 14 titles between 2008 and 2012 at Barcelona and took a year off in New York before joining the German side, exposed a deep rift between him and Barca president Sandro Rosell's management team.

"This year there have been too many things that crossed the line," Guardiola told a news conference Thursday at Lake Garda in Italy, where the German team were in pre-season training.

"But using Tito's illness to damage me is something I will never forget," he said in Catalan, denying he had failed to see Vilanova while he was treated in New York for salivary gland cancer.

"I saw Tito in New York and if we did not see each other on other occasions it is because it was not possible, but not on my part." He did not say who exactly had made the accusation.

Barcelona vice president Jordi Cardoner said he was surprised when he heard Guardiola's outburst and he denied the club had made any such claim.

"We have not used Tito's illness to go against him and whoever does such a thing is a bad person," he told Barcelona-based sports daily Mundo Deportivo in an interview published Friday, adding that he hoped there would be an explanation because he believed Guardiola's relations with himself and Rosell had always been "cordial".

In the same news conference, Guardiola also denied a claim that he had told Brazilian star Neymar's father that Vilanova would not know how to use both Neymar and Lionel Messi in the same squad.

In fact, Guardiola said he had met with Neymar's father and repeatedly told him that his son was doing the right thing by signing with Barcelona. Vilanova's name was not mentioned in the conversation, he said.

Vilanova had been Guardiola's assistant at Barcelona for five years and he led the Catalan team to their most successful league win in history last season, Guardiola said.

"Do I have to excuse myself for wanting things to go badly for someone who has been a colleague for so long?" he asked. "It is very bad taste and I was not expecting it."

The new Bayern coach said he had asked Barcelona's management to leave him in peace when he left the club.

"The only thing I asked Rosell was to leave me in peace and they have not left me in peace even from 6,000 kilometres away," Guardiola said. "They have not done it, they have not lived up to their word."

Guardiola's quotes were splashed across the pages of Spain's sporting press.

"Guardiola dynamites Barca, " ran the front page of leading sports daily As.

"Guardiola on the attack!" said Mundo Deportivo. - AFP, July 12, 2013.

Keep your shirt on, Brazil’s Maracana stadium tells fans

Posted: 11 Jul 2013 11:22 PM PDT

July 12, 2013

Fans wait in the stadium before the Confederations Cup final soccer match between Brazil and Spain at the Estadio Maracana in Rio de Janeiro on June 30, 2013. - Reuters picBrazil's Maracana football stadium, one of the sport's most hallowed and raucous grounds, has some new rules of etiquette: remain seated during games and please wear a shirt.

Another: no musical instruments such as drums or bamboo poles to wave flags.

The code of good conduct at South America's largest stadium was devised after the home team Fluminense signed a contract to play there another 35 years, stadium officials said yesterday.

It is a common sight at Maracana to see throngs of young male fans shirtless in the steamy South American heat, standing and screaming throughout games, and occasionally fighting with each other in spats with rival team supporters or rival Fluminense fan clubs.

Now, fences will be set up to separate them this season starting later this month. The barriers will be removed when Brazil hosts the World Cup next year. During that period, football's world governing body FIFA will essentially be in charge of the stadium

"We are going to talk to the teams to change habits," said Joao Borba, president of the consortium that runs the legendary arena.

Not everyone likes the segregation.

"It is a shame to put up bars at Maracana to separate fans. They have to live together in harmony," said former Brazilian star Bebeto on Twitter. He is on the World Cup organizing committee.

Sports journalist Edgar Catoira said the "FIFA pattern" does not take into account "carioca patterns." Carioca is the local word for people or things from Rio.

The stadium has undergone a $536 million overhaul with an eye to being the centerpiece of the World Cup.

That kind of spending was one of the sparks for massive protests last month by people complaining that funding for things like education and health care are getting short shrift while Brazil spends heavily to get ready for the World Cup and its hosting of the Olympic Games in 2016. - AFP, July 12, 2013.

Del Toro eyes monster hit with ‘Pacific Rim’

Posted: 12 Jul 2013 02:04 AM PDT

July 12, 2013

Still from "Pacific Rim" with Charlie Hunnam and Rinko Kikuchi Image credit: Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc. and Legendary Pictures FundingA lifelong fascination with Japanese mega-monsters is behind Mexican director Guillermo del Toro's eagerly anticipated summer blockbuster "Pacific Rim," due to be released worldwide this week.

Ever since childhood, del Toro has been captivated by Japanese "kaiju," the name given to huge creatures such as Godzilla who emerged in popular culture in the 1950s.

Monsters and the supernatural have been a recurring theme of del Toro's movies which include "Cronos" (1993), "Mimic" (1997), both "Hellboy" films and his Oscar-nominated 2006 masterpiece "Pan's Labyrinth."

"Monsters are my obsession," del Toro told AFP. "You see some people whose faces light up when they're talking about their puppies or kittens. Me, I'm happy when I'm talking about monsters."

Del Toro's new film -- with an estimated budget of around $180 million -- has allowed him to indulge his passion on a vast scale. The film stars British actors Charlie Hunnam and Idris Elba as humans who control giant robots constructed to battle a crop of enormous sea monsters who emerge from a chasm at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean.

The film is by far the largest and most complicated of del Toro's career, but he said he was unfazed by the scale of the movie.

"I've always been a filmmaker with a strong technical bent, whether in terms of makeup, animation and special effects," he said.

"So I wasn't lost in the technical aspect of the film. Making a film of this magnitude, is above all a matter of discipline, work and energy," del Toro added.

The challenge, del Toro said, was trying to ensure the overall feel of the film was not overwhelmed by the myriad visual effects.

"The most daunting aspect was to coordinate the artistic aspect of the film -- to be visually beautiful, in terms of colors, textures and shapes," he said.

As usual, del Toro's film creates some stunning images, from a colossal robot emerging from the ocean and collapsing on a beach, to the heart-stopping scene where a huge creature chases a girl through the streets of a devastated megalopolis.

Del Toro also emphasized his desire to create strong human characters from a cast which, in addition to Hunnam and Elba, features Ron Perlman and Rinko Kikuchi, who, in 2006, became the first Japanese actress to be nominated for an Oscar in 50 years for her performance in "Babel."

"I wanted to do an ensemble film, where there is not a single hero but where all the characters have the same weight," says del Toro. "Because the film is about humanity saving humanity. The human element was very important for me."

Ultimately, though, "Pacific Rim" is a monster movie, and del Toro hopes it will inspire a whole new generation of movie-goers in the way characters such as Godzilla inspired him as a child.

"I hope that young audiences and family will go see the movie," he said. "It would be very nice to create a new generation of fans of this genre."

Del Toro has paid a respectful homage to"kaiju" monster mythology in "Pacific Rim."

"The typology of kaiju is very strict: there's the bug, the crustacean, the reptile," he says. "I chose to use some. There's one that looks like an elaborate crab, and others that are clearly reptiles."

But the scale of "Pacific Rim" has left del Toro looking for a smaller project.

"What I want to do now is something quick, short, and does not cost much money," he said. - AFP/Relax, July 12, 2013

Sam Mendes to direct next James Bond film, out in 2015

Posted: 11 Jul 2013 04:53 PM PDT

July 12, 2013

The next James Bond film will be released in late 2015, producers announced Thursday, with Daniel Craig reprising his role as the suave British spy and Sam Mendes returning as director after dramatically reversing his decision to quit.

A few teasing details of the unnamed 24th official Bond adventure were announced in a picture posted on Agent 007's official Twitter feed, emblazoned with the words "BOND 24" in large letters.

"Daniel Craig is 007, Sam Mendes back as director," the tweet said, adding that the film would be released in Britain on October 23, 2015, and in the United States two weeks later.

The screenplay will be written by John Logan, who penned the last Bond film "Skyfall", as well as other hit movies including "Gladiator" and "The Last Samurai".

Mendes, 47, directed "Skyfall", which became Britain's highest-grossing film ever and took more than $1 billion at box offices worldwide when it was released in 2012.

The Oscar-winning British director said in March that he had turned down the chance to direct the next Bond film in order to concentrate on his theatre work, but confirmed on Thursday that he had changed his mind.

"I am very pleased that by giving me the time I need to honour all my theatre commitments, the producers have made it possible for me to direct Bond 24," he said in a statement published on the official Bond website.

"I very much look forward to taking up the reins again, and to working with Daniel Craig (and producers) Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli for a second time," he added.

Mendes, who won an Oscar in 2000 for directing "American Beauty", is currently working on a new musical theatre version of "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" that opened in London last month.

He will direct a production of William Shakespeare's "King Lear" at the National Theatre in London from January 2014. - AFP/Relaxnews, July 12, 2013.

‘Life without smartphones?’ - viral video by Qualcomm

Posted: 12 Jul 2013 04:15 AM PDT

July 12, 2013

Emailing, tweeting, gaming and video streaming would all be a logisitical nightmares without smartphones. Image credit: Shutterstock.comJust in case there was a consumer left on the planet that was in any way unaware of the practicality, usefulness or ubiquity of smartphones, chip maker Qualcomm has launched an amusing, tongue-in-cheek viral video to show us what life would be like without them.

Called "The World without Mobile," the two-minute clip features tweeting via carrier pigeon, streaming video via head-suspended portable television sets and being forced to update physical photos and comments on an equally physical wall every time relationship statuses change.

Then there are the minute-by-minute visits from the mailman with physical emails and the physical assaults form their spam-delivering counterparts. Still it's preferable to having to tow a mini concert stage complete with performers along the road in order to stream music.

As well as soliciting a wry smile, the video is part of the company's push to establish itself as the processor maker of choice for high-end phones and tablets. And of course, because it's a viral video it has to have a Twitter hashtag #BornMobile and a Facebook landing page.

The video can be seen at http://youtu.be/Cr5esKfUeYw - AFP/Relax, July 12, 2013.

Hot yoga, as long as it’s not too hot, is safe, says study

Posted: 12 Jul 2013 01:38 AM PDT

Hot yoga gets the thumbs up for safety in a small US study of healthy adults. Image credit: ShutterstockHot yoga - and hot barre and hot spinning classes - is a booming trend, with yogis crowding into sweltering rooms to twist their bodies to the point of exhaustion. But whether or not yoga in heated rooms, sometimes up to 105 degrees F (40.5 degrees C), is safe has been a point of contention. Now a new, small study suggests it's perfectly safe for healthy adults, as long as it's not too hot.

According to the study from the American Council on Exercise, as long as you stay hydrated, hot yoga is just as safe as yoga in more moderate temperatures, Prevention magazine reports.

University of Wisconsin-La Crosse researchers recruited 20 healthy adults between the ages of 19 and 44. Researchers measured the core body temperature of the subjects both after a 60-minute Vinyasa yoga class in a room set to 70 degrees F (21 degrees C) and after a 60-minute hot yoga class heated to between 90 and 95 degrees F (around 32-35 degrees C) with 35 to 40 percent humidity.

After both classes, the students' core temperature rose to an average of 99 degrees F (37.2 degrees C), which is well below the unsafe threshold of 104 degrees F (40 degrees C), study author Dr. John Porcari told Prevention.

"When you're exercising it's almost like your body shuts down if you get to that level," he said in the report. "It's considered dangerous, and heat related illness is almost impending."

However, if you're not hydrated, this could cause problems. He suggests drinking plenty of water, including drinking 6-8 oz or 177-236 mL of water immediately before class and more during class as needed.

Also, if you're new to hot yoga, keep in mind that it can take anywhere from 10 days to two weeks for most people to fully acclimate to exercising in the heat, so be sure to give yourself time to adjust, he noted.

Still, more tests need to be done to gauge the safety of Bikram yoga, which involves 90 minutes in a room heated to around 105 degrees F (40.5 degrees C).

Fabio Comana, an exercise physiologist with the American Council on Exercise (ACE), told MSNBC that the body wasn't designed to perform yoga in extreme heat (over 104 degrees F/40 degrees Celsius) and that doing so can damage proteins. "You may think it's purifying and cleansing but you have to respect the physiology of the body," he said. - AFP/Relax, July 12, 2013.

Pasangan muda sambut baik project ‘Rumah Transit’

Posted: 12 Jul 2013 03:01 AM PDT

July 12, 2013

- Bernama, 12 Julai 2013.

Calon PRK Kuala Besut PAS pernah dipecat dari Umno, kata Idris Jusoh

Ahli Parlimen Besut Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh semasa sidang akhbar. Gambar The Malaysian Insider oleh Afif Abd Halim 12 Julai, 2013.uly 12, 2013.

"Mereka nak seri pun susah ... Lagikan nak menang," katanya.

Kuala Besut mempunyai sejumlah 17,683 pengundi berdaftar.

- 12 Julai, 2013.

You can’t teach an old politician new tricks

Posted: 11 Jul 2013 04:00 PM PDT

July 12, 2013

Zan Azlee is a documentary filmmaker, journalist, writer, New Media practitioner and lecturer. He runs Fat Bidin Media www.fatbidin.com
What happens when an elected representative does something in office that is against the wishes of his electorate?

To be more specific, what if he does something without consulting his constituency and is mainly for his own personal benefit?

Well, in most cases around the world, this would be unethical and the elected representative would come under heated pressure and probably lose in the next election.

But in Malaysia, it happens to be quite all right. Because, you see, in this country, elected leaders are one step higher than normal people.

What they say is like gospel for everybody. Don't believe me? Then check out our newspapers. It is filled with elected leaders saying this and that as advise for the people.

Take for example, the new Home Minister, Datuk Seri Zahid Ahmad Hamidi, who recently said that the Sedition Act should not be abolished.

He says this with full aplomb as if his judgement is the right one and should be the decision best for the country.

In truth, the Sedition Act is as archaic as the ISA and a sack of fosillised mammoth bones that is about to turn into petroleum and then processed by Petronas.

At the moment, the Sedition Act cover is just too wide and vague that it allows the authorities a lot of leeway for manipulation. So, it deserves at least an update.

Even the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Razak, announced much earlier (many times, even) that the act would be abolished.

And it is not just Ahmad Zahid who is against the abolition of the Act. Many other BN leaders are too. So, I guess this just shows that many leaders are still too entrenched in old politics.

This old politics is the one that makes them think they do not have to answer to anyone and that they were elected through divine intervention.

An elected representative needs to listen to what the public wants because they need to realise that it is this public that holds the fate of their political career.

As it is, the popular vote has already been lost by the Barisan Nasional. They cannot afford to further alienate this segment of the population.

It does not take a genius political analyst to deduce that the Malaysian public wants an immediate change. If it is not a change of the guards, then at least a change within.

Malaysians are smart and getting smarter, and likewise, they want smart people to represent them too. This is only natural.

So to stay on top, politicians these days cannot be same old guards who are not of the same intellectual capabilities as the rest of Malaysia.

Gone are the days when democracy was supposed to be 'Malaysian style'. It is no longer top down where those who have been elected write the rules.

Democracy is democracy no matter where it is practised, and what it means is that the people decide and write the rules.

Those who have been elected are only there to serve that purpose, which is to represent those who elected them, with their best interests at heart.

And then, boom! What does Ahmad Zahid decide to do again? He, along with his deputy, Datuk Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, goes all god-like again!

They decide to go against the decision of a panel of distinguished law professionals consisting of chief justices, lord presidents, lawyers, academics, journalists and thinkers.

According to these two who seem to know the law better, setting up an Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission (IPCMC) is unconstitutional.

Oh well, as they say, you really can't teach an old politician new tricks. Or something like that, right? - July 12, 2013.
