McDonald’s Japan goes gourmet with truffle-laced burgers

Latest Update: August 08, 2013 12:43 pm

McDonald's Japan went highbrow recently, releasing a trio of special-edition gourmet burgers filled with thick slices of pineapple, black truffles and chorizo sausage for about $10 a pop.

Released in one-day only sales, the premium sandwiches were presented in glossy, white boutique bags emblazoned with the golden arches.

Replacing generic burger boxes, meanwhile, were fancy, shiny gift boxes housing sandwiches with names like the Gold Ring, Black Diamond and Ruby Spark, a limited-edition series dubbed the Quarter Pounder Jewelry Series.

Sandwiches were released intermittently throughout July and sold for one day only. Kicking off the series was the Gold Ring, filled with thick slices of grilled pineapple, smokey thick-cut bacon, Monterey Jack cheese and barbecue sauce - a combination that won the approval of one Australian customer who provides a glimpse of the sandwich at http://bit.ly/143oIOG.

The Black Diamond burger was perhaps the most decadent, featuring grilled mushrooms, onions, cheese and a black truffle sauce, while the Ruby Spark was filled with slices of spicy chorizo sausage, avocado and Pepper Jack cheese.

Major fast food burger chains have faced increasing pressure from smaller, mid-sized brands such as Five Guys, Shake Shack and In-N-Out which tout made-to-order, premium offerings.

One way of trying to compete has been to launch specialty and novelty sandwiches. Burger King, for instance, installed new broilers in their restaurants in order to handle meatier sandwiches like the Steakhouse XT Burger back in 2009, while Wendy's recently unveiled a pretzel bun bacon burger. - AFP/Relaxnews, August 8, 2013.

Martino “knows nothing” of Barca bid for Luiz

Posted: 07 Aug 2013 08:58 AM PDT

August 07, 2013

Barcelona's new boss Gerard Martino today said he was unaware of a bid for Chelsea and Brazil defender David Luiz, despite swirling rumours in the British press.

Speaking to reporters in Bangkok after watching his side canter to a 1-7 victory over a young Thai team, he said he had no knowledge of a rumoured bid worth around US$54 million (RM175.74 million) for the towering defender, who can also play in a holding midfield role.

"We are here in Thailand, there is nothing we know about this," he said in a terse reply to a question on the potential for recruiting the Chelsea man.

Barcelona are known to be in the market for a ball playing central defender as back up to their ageing and increasingly injury-prone captain Carles Puyol.

Martino turned to the untested Franck Bagnack to partner stalwart Gerard Pique at the heart of the defence against Thailand today.

The Cameroonian youngster, recommended to Barca by his compatriot and former Nou Camp hero Samuel Eto'o, gave away a penalty after getting caught flat-footed once in an otherwise solid if unremarkable 45 minutes against the Thais.

Martino may be keen on bringing in a more physical and experienced defender to add steal to a defence that was demolished by the strength and pace of Bayern Munich in last year's Champions League semi-final.

Luiz, who after a shakey start for the London club, has become a dominant – if occasionally eccentric – presence in the Chelsea defence, could fit the bill by bringing both power and a strong passing range to the pitch. – AFP, August 7, 2013.

Arsenal’s Suarez bid ‘on standby’ : Wenger

Arsene Wenger says that Arsenal’s interest in Luis Suarez was ‘on standby’. – Reuterspic, August 7, 2013.Arsene Wenger says that Arsenal's interest in Luis Suarez was 'on standby'. – Reuterspic, August 7, 2013.Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said today that his side's interest in Luis Suarez was "on standby", after the unsettled striker called on Liverpool to let him leave.

Arsenal have seen two offers for Suarez rejected by Liverpool, the latter a bid of US$62 million (RM201.92 million) that the London club hoped would trigger a release clause in the Uruguay international's contract.

However, in an interview published in British newspapers today, Suarez said Liverpool had broken promises made to him by refusing to let him join another club.

The 26-year-old says he cannot afford to spend another season without playing in the Champions League, but Arsenal are running out of time to include him in their squad for a play-off tie later this month, as squad lists must be registered with European governing body UEFA by August 12.

Reports in the British media claim Suarez is considering taking legal action against Liverpool in order to force through a move away from the club, but Wenger says he is powerless to intervene.

"At the moment the situation is on standby. I heard that (Suarez is considering legal action), but this is sometimes linked with things that you don't know as a potential buyer," Wenger told Al Jazeera Sport.

"That is the story between Suarez and Liverpool and I don't know what has been said, what has been promised and what has been written, and that is only Suarez and Liverpool that can decide that.

"It is nothing to do with us. We have been told that the player wants to leave Liverpool and that is why we have acted. I really don't know what will be decided by Liverpool."

Speaking to newspapers The Guardian and The Daily Telegraph, Suarez said he had been given assurances he would be allowed to leave the five-time European champions during the current close season. – AFP, August 7, 2013.

Revolutionizing government procurement - what next for ePerolehan?

Posted: 06 Aug 2013 09:07 PM PDT

August 07, 2013
Latest Update: August 07, 2013 08:07 pm

Commerce Dot Com SdnBhd (CDC), in partnership with the Ministry of Finance, has revolutionized the government tender procurement method in Malaysia through its ePerolehan (eP) system.

After 13 years in service, ePerolehan has set the standard in tender procurement and there is no turning back.

According to Chief Executive Officer CDC, Muzafar Kamal Shahaluddin, CDC is currently working on a new version of the system called "NextGeneP" to be implemented by 2015.

"We are looking forward to introduce NextGeneP. As part of CDC's commitment to innovate'Public Commerce', we conducted an in-depth review of the ePerolehan system seeking feedback from the government as well as private companies in order to create NextGeneP," he said.

CDC is already developing NextGeneP prototypes following feedback received from the various stakeholders. A wealth of data has also been collected through ePerolehan over the last 13 years that will benefit the government in policymaking and enhancing business efficiency.

Human capital development

"NextGeneP is a new eP system that will replace the current ePerolehan system by 2015. Its development is part of the overall Government Transformation Programme and it is designed to deliver best in class eProcurement practices to deliver strategic procurement," he added.

Furthermore the system's new digital architecture supports the Digital Malaysia initiative, a national programme to advance the country towards a developed digital economy by 2020.

It will also further level the playing field for Small Medium Enterprises (SME) as well as create more opportunities.

Muzafar said NextGeneP would enhance human resource skills among ePerolehan users.

"We do not just see this as a technological advancement but also human capital development," he added.

Cost saving

There are currently about 50,000 government users, 50,000 business suppliers and 300 CDC employees trained to use the system.

NextGeneP will create a new breed of professional procurement officers fulfilling the aspirations of the Government Transformation Programme (GTP).

The system will improve purchasing decisions for the government through an automatic purchasing system and predictive analytics. It will also reduce sourcing cycles making business more efficient for the government.

CDC Executive Chairman Syed Azmin Syed Nor said through ePerolehan the government has successfully digitized its procurement system.

"The system itself has completely transformed the processes of the government, therefore making it more efficient and cost saving," he said.

Approximately 70 per cent of Malaysian Government procurement is offered through CDC electronic facilities and this has helped the government to save 27 per cent in cost.

Foreign governments have expressed interest

Today ePerolehan and CDC are watchwords for efficiency, convenience and simplicity.

Syed Azmin added that the success of ePerolehan has been proven and supported CDC's vision 'Advancing Nations through efficient eProcurement solutions'.

Foreign governments including Vietnam, Philippines, Indonesia and Saudi Arabia are among many having expressed interest in adopting the system.

"CDC views its success being the success of the Malaysian Government. We will continue to innovate and improve CDC's electronic ecosystem in order to support growing demands at home and abroad," he said.

ePerolehan has seen millions of business transactions since introduced in year 2000 and is now the largest G2B community in Southeast Asia.

Companies are enjoying faster payment cycles and this improves their cash flow management besides increased user productivity.

Awards

ePerolehan has also helped companies adapt to changes in business demands and enhanced accessibility by offering mobility across multiple devices.

The company in recent years has emerged as a winner of many awards and accolades. At the international arena, ePerolehan received the Asia Pacific ICT Awards for Best e-Government and Services in 2009 and won the Bronze Award in the Public Category at the ASEAN ICT Awards 2012.

While domestically, ePerolehan received the eWorld Award for Best Telecentre Initiative of 2012. In the same year, CDC has been recognised with the Merdeka Award, in Malaysia's Prominent ICT Company category.

In addition, in March 2013, ePerolehan has been recognised as Procurement Programme of the Year in FutureGov Awards 2013.

NextGenePerolehan is the coming benchmark for public procurement solution. By going 'live' in January 2015, NextGenePerolehan will elevate the public commerce landscape to a new level. - Bernama, August 7, 2013.

Healthy eating patterns take root in babyhood: study

Posted: 06 Aug 2013 04:54 PM PDT

Latest Update: August 07, 2013 03:54 pm

Parents may want to consider turning up the Bach in their newborn's nursery if they want their child to grow into a well-adjusted adult with healthy eating habits.

That's the suggestion from a new study out of Brazil which found that preventing anxiety and a preference for fatty, sugary comfort foods later in life starts as early as neonatal care.

It's well established that people have a habit of turning to comfort foods in response to emotional stress - foods that are often high in fat and sugar.

But it's not just a psychological response as scientists have found that chronic stress in adulthood can also trigger hormonal responses, causing people to "self-medicate" with junk food, a pattern that's particularly common among women.

For their research, scientists from the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sol exposed a litter of newborn rats to reduced nesting or "early-life stress."

Then they measured behavioral anxiety and stress reactions in their adult lives, as well intake of comfort foods over four days.

Results showed that exposing the rats to early stress had a measurable impact on their adult lives, as it increased their hormonal response to stress in the form of spiked levels of corticosterone, and a preference for comfort foods.

Researchers say the results of their study could have implications for primary care on childhood nutrition in newborns who are already born in stressful conditions, such as low-birth weight babies.

The study, which was presented at the Annual Meeting of the Society for the Study of Ingestive Behavior in New Orleans last week, builds on previous research which likewise found that women who eat high-fat, sugary diets during pregnancy are more likely to give birth to babies who may become junk food addicts themselves.

That study, out of Australia, was published in the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology Journal in 2011. - AFP/Relaxnews, August 7, 2013.

What spooked the cast of The Conjuring for real?

Posted: 06 Aug 2013 05:33 PM PDT

August 07, 2013
Latest Update: August 07, 2013 09:02 am

About a third into a screening of the horror film The Conjuring — in the thick of a terrifying scene that will forever rule out the possibility of me investing in any sort of real estate involving old houses with dark basements — a woman in her late 20s scrambled past me to flee the cinema.

"I'm sorry," whispered her plus-one as he trailed behind her. "Someone's really scared."

She wasn't the only one to skedaddle out of the darkness into brighter safety. About a dozen other hardnosed entertainment journos, most of whom have probably experienced their fair share of real-life horror — like interviewing Angelina Jolie — also bolted from their seats.

"Wow," laughed The Conjuring director James Wan. "They're chicken-s***, is what they are!"

Wan is the Malaysia-born, Australia-raised director behind spooktacular flicks like Insidious and the original Saw movie. And the man loves his job.

"That's my favourite thing about making these movies: Watching people watch the film. I'll just pop my head in and watch people squirm or slide down in their seats. I love that," he smiled. "It's good. I like that kind of sadism!"

With The Conjuring, Wan has hit the sadism jackpot. It is the scariest movie of the year. The film was given an R-rating in the United States (NC16 in Singapore) — despite its lack of blood and violence. It's that creepy. And to top it all off — cue the ominous music — it's based on a true story.

Truth is spookier than fiction

It's 1971. The Perron family — Dad Roger (Ron Livingston), mom Carolyn (Lily Taylor) and their five daughters — moves into an old farmhouse in Rhode Island. Very soon, things go bump in the night, mysterious bruises start to appear, and it becomes clear that all is not right with the property. Desperate for help, The Perrons reach out to "demonologists" Ed and Lorrain Warren (Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga) to protect their family.

The Warrens would go on to become noted for their investigations into the paranormal, claiming to have worked on over 10,000 cases, including that one in Amityville, Long Island. But their experience with the Perrons, a sustained haunting that went on for 10 years in real life — although it's been condensed into a span of a few months for this 112-minute movie — would remain one of the Warrens' most terrifying encounters.

Sceptics and non-believers will pooh-pooh all of this as mystical mumbo-jumbo. The real Perron family and Lorraine (husband Ed passed away in 2006) maintain their side of the story until this day. The film-makers of The Conjuring, of course, say the supernatural world is very, very real.

Carey and Chad Hayes are the identical twin-brother writing duo behind the film, and they received validation from a most unlikely source.

"Warner Bros did a screening (of The Conjuring) for the clergy in LA," said Carey. "Chad and I were on a panel last week for something else and this priest walked up to me and said, 'You don't know me, but I watched your movie and I want to thank you guys for getting it right.'"

But the 86-year-old Warren, a clairvoyant who first discovered her gifts at age seven, can one-up them: She has a priest living in her house. It is something she's thankful for, considering her house is home to the Museum Of The Occult, a treasure trove of dark artefacts from the Warrens' numerous investigations, including a possessed doll named Annabelle, which features prominently in The Conjuring.

"I don't go into the museum," said Warren. "I have a Catholic priest living in my home. I don't think that's a coincidence."

If one was to assume all this talk about ghosts and demons were real, how much of what we see in The Conjuring actually happened? "I'd say most of it, to be honest with you," said Chad. "Because it took place over a long time (in real life) and you can't do that in a movie, what we did was take the scares and construct the story around the scares.

"It was terrifying because we met the real Perrons. Those girls came out to the set and one of them completely freaked out, collapsed to the ground. She was so scared."

"You just see it in their eyes. You just see that something really terrifying and bad happened to them," said Carey. "We took the responsibility of keeping it truthful. Andrea, the oldest daughter, sent us a really lovely note saying, 'You guys nailed it'."

"It's very real," said Warren about how the film represents what happened in 1971. "Very real."

So real, in fact, the scares crossed over to real life.

Something diabolical this way comes

"My son worked on the movie," said Chad. "We recreated the artefacts room. He was the low man on the totem pole of the camera crew. He was in there winding up this cable … and suddenly he heard this spinning noise. He turned around and there was a little brass cymbal on the shelf that he saw spinning, and it dropped to the floor and went faster and faster. It completely freaked him out. He came running out and he told (his boss), 'I'm never going in there again'!"

"When Lorraine first got on the set, she said there was something there that really shouldn't be there," said Carey, "And James said, 'But we built the house with all new lumber.' And she said, 'But you decorated the house with antiques.' And there are things that attach themselves to objects."

Oscar-nominated actress Vera Farmiga (Up in the Air, Bates Motel) found herself inexplicably waking up at 3.07 every morning — the same time characters in the film get the heebie-jeebies.

"I still wake up at (that time)," said the 39-year-old, matter-of-factly. "I think it is my own psychic alarm clock. It's almost funny now. Like, I'll wake up and it will be 3.07am: 'Okay, time to take a tinkle'. I really don't have any negative associations with that."

Now, that is. "In the beginning, there was a fear that came along with that, that I had to pray away, that I had to repel with my own positivity," added Farmiga.

Everybody's a sceptic

Of course, not everyone who worked on the film is a believer. Take The Conjuring's leading man Patrick Wilson, for example.

"I was invited a bunch of times to go visit the actual Perron house and the Warren house and I said, 'No fing way,'" laughed Wan. "I was too terrified! But Patrick and Vera did! Vera did not want to go down into the haunted museum but Patrick did.

"One day, I was just hanging out with friends and I got this text message — and it's a picture of Patrick (goofing off) next to the Annabelle doll! I was like, 'Dude, that thing's gonna latch on to you and go home with you'!"

"I was at a party and there was a guy talking about how he woke up one night and there were four spirits holding the corners of the sheets and they were shaking him up and down," said fellow sceptic Ron Livingston. "And I said, 'Well, okay, I must just be the wallflower of the spirit world because nobody has ever hung out with me'. And the moment I said that, the candelabra started rattling and shaking and the lights flickered on and off."

But no, it wasn't anything supernatural. "It was the Northridge earthquake," he grinned.

Would he, however, want to know if his house were truly haunted? "I would want to know. And at the very least, I would want to charge rent. If you're gonna stay here, you're gonna do the dishes, you're gonna cook once a week. We're gonna work that out," he said.

Still, the 46-year-old actor wasn't about to take any chances. Just in case there's any truth in this whole nonsense about spirits, he didn't keep any mementos from the set.

"I usually do keep something, but not from this (movie). Props was just trying to give away that stuff," he laughed.

We'll probably never know which side of the paranormal debate is truly right. For Warren, however, that question has long been answered. What she wants to know is how her dearly departed husband Ed would have liked The Conjuring and its take on their life's work.

"Sometimes I think he's very close to me. Very, very, very close to me, I think he is," she smiled. "Maybe I want to try to see if I could say to him, 'Honey, what do you think about this movie? Because you're not here now'."

Whatever the answer, I'm guessing there won't be many journalists waiting around to find out.

The Conjuring is now showing in cinemas. - Todayonline.com, August 7, 2013.

Pemberi maklumat SK Seri Pristana mohon anak tukar ke sekolah vernacular

Posted: 07 Aug 2013 01:50 AM PDT

OLEH YISWAREE PALANSAMY
August 07, 2013

- 7 Ogos 2013
