Delight your tastebuds this festive season with Tony Conigliaro's non-alcoholic apple mojitoDelight your tastebuds this festive season with Tony Conigliaro's non-alcoholic apple mojitoTo celebrate the full bloom of summer, two of the world's top mixologists share their best "summer-in-a-glass" cocktail recipes for sipping languidly on a hot day and clinking with friends and loved ones.

Every week throughout the summer, New York mixologist Jim Meehan, the man behind underground speakeasy PDT (short for Please Don't Tell), and Tony Conigliaro of 69 Colebrooke Row in London will provide two cocktail recipes: one, a midweek, post-work, kick-off-your-shoes type cocktail, the other, an apéritif or beverage to accompany a sun-soaked meal during those lazy, hazy summer weekends.

For teetotalers and those looking for a refreshing alcohol-free beverage, Conigliaro shares his recipe for a non-alcoholic apple mojito.

Apple Mojito

Ingredients:
6 mint sprigs
15ml sugar syrup
10ml fresh lemon juice
15ml fresh lime
75ml freshly pressed green apple juice
Lemon and lime slices plus mint sprig to garnish

Method:
1. In a cocktail tin, muddle the mint sprigs with the sugar syrup.
2. Mix in the lemon and lime juice, add crushed ice and the apple juice.
3. Shake twice and pour the mix into a highball glass.
4. Garnish with lemon and lime slices plus bruised mint sprig.

As a former art history student, Tony Conigliaro approaches the art of drink-making as a chef, scientist and perfumer. He is the author of the recently released cocktail book "Drinks: Unravelling the Mysteries of Flavour and Aroma in Drink," and is also a regular contributor for "GQ" magazine. The Zetter Townhouse, which he opened in 2011 in London, was named Best New Bar in the World from Tales of the Cocktail for 2012. He also helms 69 Colebrooke Row, also in London, and Le Coq in Paris. - AFP/Relaxnews, August 11, 2013.

FC Barcelona beat Malaysia 3-1 in friendly match – Bernama

Barcelona's Javier Macherano fights for the ball with Malaysia's Norshahrul Idlan Talaha during their friendly football match at the Shah Alam Stadium in Shah Alam, near Kuala Lumpur on August 10, 2013. - The Malaysian Insider / Afif Abd HalimBarcelona's Javier Macherano fights for the ball with Malaysia's Norshahrul Idlan Talaha during their friendly football match at the Shah Alam Stadium in Shah Alam, near Kuala Lumpur on August 10, 2013. - The Malaysian Insider / Afif Abd HalimSpanish giants Barcelona wrapped up their Asian tour with another comprehensive victory today, beating a Malaysian XI 3-1 at the Shah Alam Stadium in Shah Alam.

With World Player of the Year Lionel Messi on the bench over injury concerns, Brazilian wonderkid Neymar was the star of a tight first half, showcasing his talents to make one goal and score another.

First, the 21-year-old wriggled free on the left before sending a pinpoint cross for Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas to head home.

It was a tame header and Malaysian goalkeeper Khairul Fahmi Che Mat should have done better, but he may have been distracted by a firecracker that was set off by a fan.

Malaysia, who had gone closest to opening the scoring, equalised in the 40th minute when the ball fell to Amri Yahyah, and the striker curled in from the edge of the box.

The home fans' joy was short-lived as two minutes later, Neymar – who was this week reportedly diagnosed with anaemia – broke free and beat two defenders before shooting home.

Neymar joined Barcelona after a summer move from Santos and opened his account for the club in the 7-1 win over the Thai national team on Wednesday, on the first leg of a tour designed to promote Barca's brand in the region.

The second half was a drab affair with the teams making multiple changes to their lineups, which disrupted the flow.

There were few attacks, and the fans showed their displeasure by whistling at the players.

Many will have already been disgruntled after the match venue was moved from Bukit Jalil National Stadium because of an uneven pitch, which Malaysian Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin described as an "embarrassment" for the country.

Barcelona, however, managed to add a third after 74 minutes through Gerard Pique, who rammed the ball past substitute goalkeeper Farizal Marlias.

The tour comes three years after Barcelona's last visit to the football-mad continent, before the start of the La Liga season later this month.

Barcelona vice president Jordi Moix Latas said a survey by the club showed it had more fans in Asia than Europe and the Americas combined.

More than 40,000 tickets were sold for the friendly in Malaysia.

"We realise not all our fans can afford to fly to Spain to watch us, and we want to reward them by coming here and spreading our brand," he said.

"In fact, our number one Facebook fans are from Indonesia. As such, we intend to travel to this region for more pre-season matches in the coming years." – AFP, August 10, 2013.

Neil Young cancels all European tour dates

Latest Update: August 10, 2013 05:53 pm

Rocker Neil Young and his band Crazy Horse have canceled all remaining dates on their European tour.

A statement on the band's website (neilyoung.com/news) reads "Due to an accident involving Crazy Horse, the remaining dates on the Neil Young and Crazy Horse tour of Europe and the British isles have been cancelled. We are sorry for any inconvenience this causes to our fans or the Festivals where we were scheduled to appear. As you must be, we too are disappointed at this unfortunate turn of events."

Although no official explanation was given, Rolling Stone quotes "a source to the Young camp" who attributes the cancellation to guitarist Frank "Poncho" Sampedro having damaged his hand.

The group was due to play Bergenhus in Norway on August 10, followed by dates in Denmark, Germany, Belgium and the UK. It is thought that the North American leg of the tour will still go ahead. - AFP/Relaxnews, August 10, 2013.

‘Elysium’ delivers action, destruction and a deeper message on life

Posted: 08 Aug 2013 04:47 PM PDT

August 09, 2013
Latest Update: August 09, 2013 03:47 pm

Director Neill Blomkamp and leading man Matt Damon mostly want summer filmgoers to be completely entertained by the action-packed, sci-fi thriller "Elysium." But if the audience could also ponder the question of what to do about world poverty and inequality, well, that would be a bonus.

"Elysium," which opens this weekend, is not the typical light summer fare served up in big-budget Hollywood productions. And Blomkamp, the South African who made waves with his first feature, "District 9," is no typical director.

After all, he employed the alien invasion genre as a vehicle to explain xenophobia and segregation in South Africa, a novel concept that garnered four Oscar nominations in 2010, including best picture.

"Elysium" portrays two distinct worlds in the year 2154 - a diseased and overpopulated Earth, and Elysium, a space station where the elite live far from the seething masses in perfectly manicured mansions. Cancer can be cured in seconds on Elysium.

"Everyone who doesn't have that wealth wants it and will try to get it and the First World will probably try to hang on to it and it will get direr," Blomkamp, 33, said in an interview. "What do you, as the audience member, think should be done?"

Damon plays Max, a blue-collar worker with a criminal past struggling with robot bureaucrats and policemen in his shantytown. He has given up on his childhood hopes of reaching Elysium when he suffers an industrial accident and needs to reach the First World's medicine to survive.

If the premise sounds far-fetched, Damon says not so much.

"If you look at the difference between the bottom billion people on planet Earth and the top 10 million, the contrast is as stark as living on a space station and living in a third world urban center," the actor said.

Max reluctantly makes a deal with an underworld lord to take him to Elysium, but in exchange he must undertake a mission that will can benefit not just him, but millions back on Earth.

Jodie Foster plays Delacourt, the Elysium defense secretary bent on keeping Max and all other illegal immigrants out. She employs her own covert force headed by rogue operative Kruger when the military can't keep up with invasions from Earth.

Delacourt's ways may remind viewers of certain Washington neo-conservatives, but Blomkamp says he took inspiration from French politician Christine Lagarde, the head of the International Monetary Fund. Foster emulates her blunt haircut, power suits and steely determination.

Blomkamp went outside Hollywood to round out the cast with well-known actors from Brazil, Mexico and South Africa, including Sharlto Copley, who starred in "District 9."

As Max fights his way to Elysium, bloody battles and software warfare ensue, first on the dusty fringes of the dysfunctional city of Los Angeles and then in the sleek corridors of Elysium. Blomkamp employs the visual effects that made "District 9" stand out, with robot security forces disintegrating into the ether under withering hi-tech gunfire.

The director had a budget of around $115 million, nearly four times what he had for "District 9," but he said he only really needed to spend more money because he had to construct Elysium.

"Bringing the space station to life required mass resources," Blomkamp said.

The film comes at a crucial time for Sony Pictures Entertainment, a unit of Sony Corp, which is looking for summer box office success after high-profile flops like "After Earth" and "White House Down."

Sony's up-front costs for "Elysium" were pared by tying up with Media Rights Capital, which financed, packaged and produced the film.

The special effects, the ear-shattering action and the fantastical scenery fit the bill for a summer hit. But then it's back to the meaty question of where society is headed.

And there, director and star diverge.

As Blomkamp sees it, man is hard-wired since his days in the cave to protect what he has.

"We are smart enough to build the technology to make a globalized planet and we are not smart enough to get rid of ancient software that governs us," Blomkamp said. "Those two combined will yield a serious powder keg explosion that, in my opinion, is coming."

Damon, who's Max spends much of the movie in distress, is more sanguine than his director.

"He's pessimistic about the future and I am optimistic about the future," Damon said. "You take what message you will from the movie." - Reuters, August 9, 2013.

From school run to World Championships for Japan’s marathon man

Latest Update: August 10, 2013 11:02 am

Japanese runner Yuki Kawauchi crosses the finish line in the 2011 Tokyo Marathon.Japanese runner Yuki Kawauchi crosses the finish line in the 2011 Tokyo Marathon. He has no coach, no sponsor and works five days a week as a school clerk, but that won't stop Japanese marathon runner Yuki Kawauchi from racing with the best at the world athletics championships, which start Saturday in Moscow.

Dubbed the "strongest citizen runner in history," Kawauchi squeezes races into his weekends, travelling at home and overseas before returning to work every Monday.

In doing so the 26-year-old has become a cult hero in marathon-mad Japan. "I want to show that you can compete at the world level even if you have a job like I do," he told a recent gathering of reporters.

Kawauchi's unusual success story has helped fuel the nation's ever-intensifying enthusiasm for running, which saw a spike in 2011 after the earthquake and tsunami disaster prompted many to improve their fitness in preparation for emergencies.

"I will run straight and steady, aiming for a spot in the top six," Kawauchi said of competing in the world men's marathon in Moscow on August 17.

His target may sound modest. But Japanese men have been without a world-class marathon medal since Tsuyoshi Ogata brought home bronze from the 2005 world athletics championships. Japanese women have done much better, winning the 2000 and 2004 Olympic golds through Naoko Takahashi and Mizuki Noguchi while bagging five non-gold world medals since 2001.

Despite having little time to spare between his full-time administrative job at a school in Saitama, north of Tokyo, Kawauchi has run in 22 long-distance events so far this year, which is a lot compared to most elite runners.

These include six full marathons, 10 half-marathons and a 50-kilometre "ultramarathon" in June, in which he collapsed with heat stroke.

Having finished 18th in his world championship debut in 2011, he failed to qualify for last year's London Olympics. But in March he set a personal best of 2:08:14 at the Seoul Marathon where he finished fourth.

Kawauchi, who reportedly spends a quarter of his salary on racing, has won 10 marathons since his first in 2009, completing the last nine of those victories in a year.

"He is a model for us, even if not everybody can handle so many races as he does," said former national team runner Yuko Manabe, 34, as she coached two dozen office workers and housewives running around Tokyo's popular Imperial Palace route on a Friday evening.

A five-kilometre (three-mile) ring road outside the palace's stone walls and mossy moats in the centre of Tokyo, it has become a pilgrimage for runners who swarm there by the thousands even in the sweltering summer.

"Citizen runners have finally seen in Kawauchi, who leads the life of a salaryman, the first person to represent them at the world championships," said Jiro Hashimoto, who has published the popular monthly magazine "Runners" since 1976.

"He is enormously popular at every race he runs," he told AFP

Five men and three women, including 2004 women's Olympic champion Noguchi, make up Japan's marathon squad for Moscow. All but Kawauchi belong to corporate teams -- semi-professional athletes hired by companies as ordinary workers but allowed to focus on training and competing to promote brand awareness.

Kawauchi was selected thanks to his victory at the Beppu, Oita Marathon in February, in which he outpaced Kentaro Nakamoto who was sixth in the London Olympics and who will also run in Moscow.

"It will be great if I can show athletes, who cannot join corporate teams, that they have an option to get strong as citizen runners," said Kawauchi.

"In domestic races, I strongly feel that I must not be beaten by corporate teams," he said, adding however that rivalries are put aside when representing Japan.

"We help each other in the national team."

Last month he sent a strong signal of intent by winning Australia's Gold Coast Marathon, tying the course record in the process.

Awarded the top prize of A$15,000 (about RM41,000), he missed out on a bonus of A$5,000 that would have been his had he broken the record instead of equalling it.

"It is more than what I earn every month," Kawauchi said.

"I've realised how important one second is." - AFP/Relaxnews, August 10, 2013.

Ahmad Husni tidak pertahan jawatan MT, peluang pemimpin muda laksana pembaharuan - Bernama

August 10, 2013

– Bernama, 10 Ogos, 2013.

Karpal minta Kuan Yew jaga tepi kain sendiri

Latest Update: August 10, 2013 05:05 pm

Beliau sepatutnya menikmati hari-hari tuanya," kata Karpal.

Lee menerusi buku bertajuk "One's Man View of The World" yang dilancarkan minggu lepas, antara lain berkata pakatan tidak akan mampu mentadbir Malaysia.
