Bahrain says thwarted attacks, found petrol bombs before F1 race

Bahrain did not see a repeat of the mass demonstrations that overshadowed last year's race — though young men armed with rocks did clash with police in outlying villages, as they have done regularly since unrest erupted in early 2011.

Protests in the Gulf Arab country, a Western ally that hosts the US Navy's Fifth Fleet, broke out two years ago, with the Shi'ite-led opposition drawing thousands of demonstrators demanding democratic reforms from the Sunni-led government.

Witnesses at the Sakhir desert race circuit, about 30km (20 miles) southwest of the capital Manama, said there was no sign of unrest in the immediate vicinity but protesters blocked several roads in villages near the capital.

The opposition said the race was being used as a public relations stunt, but the government insisted it was a pure sporting event that should not be 'politicised'.

Security sweeps ahead of this year's contest "thwarted a number of terrorist plots that aimed to affect normal life ... harm the reputation of the nation and commit terrorist acts against policemen", Bahrain's chief of public security, Major-General Tariq Al-Hassan, said according to the BNA agency.

Security forces had found several weapon caches holding 1,000 petrol bombs, 19 mock bombs, bullets and homemade guns, he added.

Hassan said security forces had also handled several incidents of rioting, including "acts of chaos and destruction" inside an industrial secondary school by students who had also blocked nearby roads and attacked cars, pedestrians and policemen, according to BNA.

"Police at no point in time raided the school or attacked it," Hassan said.

Sayed Yousif al-Muhafdha of the Bahrain Centre for Human rights had said on Sunday police had fired teargas at a secondary school in the city where students had been demonstrating.

Today, Muhafdha added security forces had arrested up to 50 "pro-democracy activists" in the days preceding the race.

Amnesty International said human rights activists reported dozens of protesters were arrested ahead of the race and Human Rights Watch said on April 10 that 20 opposition activists had been arrested in towns near the circuit.

The government has denied those arrests have taken place. It has said several people accused of stealing and burning cars had been detailed.

Widespread unrest forced the cancellation of the 2011 Formula One race and although the event went ahead in 2012, it was overshadowed by violent protests in the country. — Reuters

Pirelli urged to keep tyres as they are

April 23, 2013

A Red Bull Formula One team member inspects Pirelli tyres near the pits at the Chinese F1 Grand Prix at the Shanghai International Circuit April 11, 2013. — Reuters picLONDON, April 23 — Red Bull have an agenda in complaining about this year's tyres and the 'vast majority' of Formula One teams have urged Pirelli not to change them, according to the Italian company's motorsport director Paul Hembery.

After the first four races of the season, Pirelli have been in the headlines more than ever after introducing new compounds to encourage overtaking, mix up strategy and create more pit stops.

There have been concerns that the races have become confusing for fans, while some drivers have moaned about having to pace themselves rather than being able to go flat out.

Much of the criticism has come from champions Red Bull, who want the tyres to be longer-lasting and blamed excessive wear for their controversial use of 'team orders' in Malaysia last month.

Hembery said he felt like 'piggy in the middle' and the situation was all "a bit weird really".

"We often sit down and go 'what's all this about?'," the Briton, Pirelli's main man in Formula One, told Reuters at last weekend's Bahrain Grand Prix.

"It's the third year (of Pirelli being sole tyre supplier), it's no different this year than any other year. We've given the challenge, some like it and some don't. They all have the same challenge," added the company's motorsport director.

"In the end we've had the vast majority of teams come to us and say: 'Whatever you do don't change anything'.

"We might - because we have to, and because we see things that as tyre supplier we might want to change — but essentially they are saying: 'Don't change even if you are getting this (negative) media coverage.' So it is rather strange."

Sebastian Vettel won for Red Bull in Bahrain, the triple champion's second victory of the year, but team principal Christian Horner told reporters afterwards that he felt the tyres were still too "on an edge".

"The most vocal team has been Red Bull obviously, and for their reasons," said Hembery.

"The others, if they see one team pushing that way will push against that because they feel there's a good reason why they (Red Bull) want to go in that direction."

ECCLESTONE HAPPY

Pirelli have been supported by Formula One supremo Ecclestone, who always likes a controversy - or indeed anything that gets F1 talked about — but is also in favour of rewarding strategy and driver skills.

"If the tyres lasted from January to December, there'd be something else to talk about," 82-year-old billionaire Ecclestone told Reuters with a sigh.

"What is good about this (situation) is that it really comes back a little bit to what it used to be when the guys had to look after their brakes and gearboxes and things like that."

The tyres have certainly made a notable difference to the racing this season.

In China, the third race of the season, Red Bull's Australian Mark Webber used the soft tyres for just one lap when he started from the pit lane. In Bahrain, a four-stop strategy was an option for some, with Ferrari's Felipe Massa suffering two tyre deflations in the race.

In Malaysia, Red Bull justified their use of 'team orders' — that backfired when world champion Vettel ignored them and passed Webber to win — by saying they were worried about excessive tyre wear.

Pirelli changed the compounds for Bahrain based on evidence from Malaysia that they might need to be harder, and will go back to Milan to review the data before the European season starts in Spain next month.

Whatever they decide, they will be even-handed.

"We try and do the right thing for everybody, for the sport and the vast majority. We don't want to favour anybody," said Hembery.

"Maybe the engineers and drivers would prefer it that they knew they've got pole and could run away with it...but as a sporting spectacle we know that fans want to have uncertainty."

Hembery, whose company replaced Japan's Bridgestone in 2011 on an initial three-year deal that runs out at the end of this season, expected the situation to calm down once the midpoint of the season was reached.

"The first two seasons were very similar. You get to seven or eight races in and things really do settle down and it'll be the same again this year I'm sure," said the Briton.

When Pirelli came back into Formula One, after leaving in the 1990s, they were asked to make tyres that would help to create more overtaking by becoming a greater part of the strategy.

Making the tyres more of a talking point was also attractive commercially.

"We were asked to replicate Canada 2010 and we are doing what we were asked to do. If you don't want us to do that, tell us and we'll do another approach," Hembery said of the criticism. "But if we do that, maybe it doesn't appeal to us any more being in the sport where you get no visibility.

"That was one of the reasons why the previous suppliers had to go, because they were anonymous.

"We could build the tyres to last the whole race, go to sleep, say we're not worried about any publicity.

"As it is a very dramatic and significant net cost to the business, we have to justify why we are here," he added. "So we need to have visibility, we need to have a profile, otherwise quite frankly we won't be here."

Pirelli have yet to sign a new contract from 2014, although their deal with Ecclestone for trackside advertising has several more years to run, but talks are ongoing. — Reuters

Backstreet Boys get Hollywood star ahead of world tour

McLean, Howie Dorough, Kevin Richardson, Nick Carter and Brian Littrell at their star. — Reuters picLOS ANGELES, April 23 — Boy band the Backstreet Boys — now all grown men — yesterday marked their 20th anniversary and their upcoming world tour by getting a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

"Backstreet is Back ... and we aren't going anywhere," Nick Carter, 33, told fans as all five members of the 1990s band gathered to unveil their star — located right next to another popular boy band, Boyz II Men.

The close harmony singers were visibly emotional as they thanked their families and fans for their support over the years.

"What an honour it is," said Kevin Richardson, 40, holding back tears. "What a beautiful day. What another beautiful way to celebrate 20 years together."

Formed in 1993 in Florida, the Backstreet Boys went on to sell more than 130 million albums worldwide and score hits such as "I Want It That Way", and "Shape of My Heart".

The other members of the group are Brian Littrell, A.J. McLean and Howie Dorough.

After several hiatuses in the 2000s and the departure of Richardson, the five original members officially got back together last year and will embark on a world tour in May, starting in China.

Backstreet Boys are also due to release a new album this summer, and a music documentary in 2014. — Reuters

Reese Witherspoon apologises for drunken spat

Reese Witherspoon: "Deeply embarrassed" about the things she said. — Reuters file picATLANTA, April 23 — Oscar-winning actress Reese Witherspoon's initial court date on a disorderly conduct charge was yesterday pushed back for a month after the squeaky-clean "Legally Blonde" star admitted she had drunk too much and was "deeply embarrassed" by her behaviour.

Witherspoon, 37, one of Hollywood's most beloved celebrities, was arrested in the early hours of Friday morning in Atlanta, after arguing with police who stopped her husband James Toth on suspicion of drunken driving.

James Toth, in a photo released by the Atlanta Department of Corrections. — Reuters picA first court hearing set for yesterday was rescheduled for May 22, Atlanta municipal court officials said. Her talent agent husband Toth will have a hearing the following day.

In a statement released late on Sunday, the American actress said she could not go into detail about what happened, citing legal reasons. But she added: "I do want to say I clearly had one drink too many and I am deeply embarrassed about the things I said," Witherspoon said in the statement.

"It was definitely a scary situation and I was frightened for my husband, but that was no excuse. I was disrespectful to the officer who was just doing his job. I have nothing but respect for the police and I am very sorry for my behaviour."

Witherspoon, who has recently dyed her signature blonde hair brown, appeared in New York on Sunday as scheduled for the premiere of her latest film "Mud", as news of her arrest began to break.

The actress, who won an Oscar in 2006 for playing country star June Carter Cash in "Walk the Line" and made her movie debut at age 15, had until now avoided the kind of scandal that hits many Hollywood stars.

According to the police report, Toth, 42, was pulled over when he drove across a double line on the road. Appearing dishevelled, smelling of alcohol and with bloodshot eyes, he then failed a blood-alcohol breath test and a field sobriety test.

Witherspoon was warned to stay inside the vehicle but after her husband's arrest, she got out of the car and said, "she was a 'US citizen' and that she had the right to 'stand on American ground'," according to the police report.

Witherspoon was arrested on an allegation of disorderly conduct.

The actress asked if the police officer knew who she was, saying: "You're about to find out who I am. ... You're going to be on national news," the police report said.

The couple was released from custody about 3:30am on Friday.

Witherspoon has been in the Atlanta area filming her next movie "The Good Lie", based on the real life story of a refugee from the Sudanese civil war.

Toth and Witherspoon married in 2011 and have a son together. Witherspoon has two children from her first husband, actor Ryan Phillippe. — Reuters

Too many female marathon runners experience breast pain

Posted: 23 Apr 2013 08:53 AM PDT

April 23, 2013

LONDON, April 23 — A new British study finds that more than a third of women who run marathons suffer from breast pain when jogging — and that four out of 10 do nothing about it. But researchers say women could improve their odds with a better sports bra.

A new British study finds that more than a third of female runners who experience breast pain from jogging could improve their odds by getting a better sports bra. — AFP picPublished online last week in The British Journal of Sports Medicine, the study looked at 1,285 female runners who registered for last year's London Marathon.

Subjects answered 30 questions about their running habits, whether they wore sports bras or what type of support they used, and if they experience breast pain, known as mastalgia. More than 400 of the runners said they had breast pain, but perhaps not surprisingly, women with larger breasts suffered the most.

Researchers from St. Mary's University College London and the University of Portsmouth also noted that women without children were significantly more likely to experience breast pain than those with children.

According to WebMD, some of the runners treated their pain with painkillers, while others altered their diet, used hot and cold compresses, or applied evening primrose oil. Lead researcher Nicola Brown noted that while most women used sports bras, they didn't necessarily perceive adjusting the fit of the bra as a method to overcoming breast pain.

For the majority of women, it's essential to find a sports bra that is comfortable, won't chafe, and protects your breasts from the wear and tear of even a little bouncing, which can break down ligaments in the breast tissue and cause sagging, experts say.

To get a proper fit, talk to a specialist in a major department store or a bra boutique, or try websites such as Team Estrogen or Brayola for tips on sizing — but nothing beats a professional, a dressing room, and a tape measure. A few sports bras designed for larger busts include Lululemon's Ta Ta Tamer II, Moving Comfort's Fiona Maximum Control Wire-Free Sports Bra, Lynx Sports Bra, and Enell Sports Bra. — AFP/Relaxnews

Undergraduates should know of the GE13 developments

Posted: 23 Apr 2013 02:34 AM PDT

April 23, 2013

A brief study conducted by Bernama at several higher learning institutions in Shah Alam found that some youths have decided to keep away from politics as they felt it is a 'dirty game'. — File picSHAH ALAM, April 23 — Undergraduates should participate and learn about the political developments in the country in the run up to the 13th General Election (GE13), especially when looking at the fact that they too will be the ones deciding the country's future.

"So we have to provide the opportunity to undergraduates to access the political realm," said a lecturer with Universiti Teknologi Malaysia's (UiTM) Administration and Policy Studies Faculty, Associate Professor Dr Shaharuddin Badaruddin.

"I encourage graduates to hold forums with political parties at their respective institutions to enhance their political maturity," he said when met by Bernama during a forum entitled "What is There in the General Elections ?" organised by the UiTM's Law Faculty students recently.

CATEGORISED AS FENCE SITTERS

Meanwhile, a brief study conducted by Bernama at several higher learning institutions in Shah Alam found that some youths have decided to keep away from politics as they felt it is a 'dirty game'.

Yet there were many youths who were keen to keep in touch with the political developments.

The head of the Student Council at UiTM, Azraful Azman, 23, when contacted by Bernama voiced his concern when youths categorised as fence sitters ignore the political developments in the country.

"One of the factors why the undergraduates loathe at politics is that it involves more defamatory than good elements," he said.

If this mindset continues it would affect the future leadership, he added.

AMENDMENTS ALLOW UNDERGRADUATES TO PARTICIPATE

An applied science student Muhammad Adib Akram, 23, felt that the country's politics have yet to mature with many of the candidates forgetting their responsibilities to the voters after being elected.

"If the politicians are evaluated based on their ability to address issues, the undergraduates could then differentiate between the good and bad in choosing their leader," he said.

Since the amendments to the Section 15 of the Universities and Universities College Act came into force in April 2012, undergraduates are allowed to participate in politics with the GE13 being their first chance to get a taste of their new found freedom. — Bernama

Why Liverpool should keep — and help — Luis Suarez

Posted: 22 Apr 2013 05:45 PM PDT

April 23, 2013

Andy West is a sports writer originally from the UK and now living in Barcelona. He has worked in professional football since 1998 and specialises in the Spanish Primera Division and the English Premier League. Follow him on Twitter at @andywest01.

APRIL 23 — I wanted to write today's column about this week's Champions League semi-finals.

The highest quality football tournament on the planet, the best four teams in Europe (apologies to fans of Manchester United and Juventus) going for the biggest prize the game can offer: what could be better?

But then along came Luis Suarez biting Branislav Ivanovic during Liverpool's 2-2 draw with Chelsea on Sunday, so how on earth can I ignore that?

I'm a big fan of Suarez. I believe he's a world-class talent and in the past I've had no problem with his spikiness. The best players generally have that kind of edge (even Leo Messi is no saint) and if you want an athlete to strive for individual excellence in a competitive, physical environment, you have to accept the rough with the smooth.

Sure, Suarez has always operated on the very edges of the spectrum of what's acceptable and he seems to have a habit of attracting trouble, but to a certain extent I can accept that in a sportsman.

This time, however, he has gone too far.

The biggest concern over his conduct on Sunday is that he's done it before. During his time with Ajax, he received a seven-match ban for biting PSV Eindhoven midfielder Otman Bakkal; the fact that he's done the same thing again suggests he didn't learn a thing from that episode.

Playing with rugged physicality is one thing, but biting an opponent isn't an expression of extreme competitiveness. It is an indication of a deeply flawed human being — especially, as I said, when he's done it before.

This presents Liverpool with an enormous problem. Suarez is their best player. In fact, he is one of the world's best players — I truly believe he's good enough to play for any team. If he left Liverpool, he could play for Barcelona or Bayern Munich; if he was Brazilian, he would be an automatic selection in their national team. He's that good.

From a purely sporting perspective, then, there's no way that Liverpool want to lose him. And if they did have to, they'd want it to be on their terms, allowing them to extract the highest possible fee rather than being forced to accept the bargain baseman price that would inevitably result from his disciplinary deficiencies. In that sense, they should keep him.

However, Liverpool have a long and admirable history of trying to behave with dignity. They are a proud club and their name is being sullied by Suarez's conduct. In that sense, they should sell him.

The Anfield club responded quickly and correctly by accepting that his behaviour on Sunday was completely wrong. Their statement, released just a few hours after the game, was brief, to the point and sought to make no excuses or justification. That was correct.

I believe they should now continue with an open, transparent and proactive approach; I also believe they should keep him. But first they should help him.

Suarez, it seems likely to me, has deep psychological problems. He is a flawed human being and, as such, he needs counselling, he needs medical support. He needs an employer who will stand by him whilst acknowledging his problems and genuinely helping him to address them.

Liverpool, therefore, should fund an extensive medical and psychiatric rehabilitation programme, and take the proactive decision to suspend him indefinitely from all football until that course of treatment is satisfactorily completed in the opinion of independent mental health professionals — regardless of whatever punishment the FA might choose to hand out.

I'm not a doctor or a mental health expert, and I'm not familiar with Suarez's family medical history or social background, but for the Uruguayan to consistently create the kind of trouble that has so badly damaged his reputation makes me believe there is a serious problem with his mental state.

Yes, he should initially be condemned and punished, but he should also be helped. For this to happen, of course, Suarez would first need to acknowledge that he has a problem, which may not be easy.

In the macho world of professional sport, such suggestions are generally mocked and dismissed. Admitting mental illness is seen as a sign of immense weakness. Battle-hardened athletes are not supposed to have mental health issues and, if they do, they're supposed to somehow put them to one side, "man up" and carry on regardless.

Of course, I may be wrong and there may be nothing wrong with Suarez's mental state, and his various misdemeanours could just be the cynical work of a calculating but perfectly healthy brain. I'm just speculating, but as a layman he appears to be a prime case for suffering from some kind of mental imbalance or illness. It certainly merits further investigation by experts in the field.

If that is the case, and both Suarez and Liverpool acknowledge it, properly address the issue and he eventually returns to football — and life — in a healthier frame of mind, making a genuine attempt to mend his ways rather than issuing a brief but meaningless "I'm sorry" statement, he should be welcomed back with open arms.

It could even prove to be some kind of breakthrough for addressing the wider taboo of mental health issues in professional sport.

What can't happen is a "brush it under the carpet" approach, where Luis says he's very sorry, receives a 10-game ban, returns next season and then a few months later gets himself into trouble again.

That would not address the issue; it would not help Liverpool, it would not help football and, perhaps most importantly, it would not help Suarez.

Semua parti bermasalah fasal calon

Posted: 22 Apr 2013 05:37 PM PDT

April 23, 2013

Pecat keahlian 61 pemimpin Umno tanding bebas tindakan tepat, kata Soi Lek

Posted: 23 Apr 2013 03:02 AM PDT

Oleh Mohd Farhan Darwis
April 23, 2013

Nenek berusia 100 tahun nasihat generasi muda keluar mengundi

Posted: 23 Apr 2013 01:50 AM PDT

April 23, 2013

"Kami dulu bangun awal pagi kayuh basikal ajak orang keluar mengundi.
