Cardiff and Fulham relegated from Premier League

Posted: 03 May 2014 08:58 AM PDT

May 03, 2014

Cardiff City and Fulham were relegated from the Premier League today after defeats at Newcastle United and Stoke City condemned them to the drop.

Sunderland's 1-0 victory at Manchester United and Cardiff's 3-0 drubbing at Newcastle means the Welsh club's first top flight season since 1962 will end in relegation.

Fulham, members of the Premier League since 2001, were beaten 4-1 by Stoke – leaving them with no escape.

With one game remaining Cardiff have 30 points and Fulham 31, with Sunderland one place above the bottom three on 35.

Norwich City (32) will be effectively condemned to second tier football tomorrow if they lose at Chelsea. – Reuters, May 3, 2014

It took a long time for the Bundesliga champions to get started with Bayern needing more than half an hour to carve out their first chance against the battling hosts.

That was, however, all Goetze needed to score after he played a quick one-two with Arjen Robben, charged into the box and slotted in for the lead in the 32nd minute.

The Germany international, who was not in the starting lineup in their Champions League defeat to the Spaniards, played a part in the second goal early in the second half with Thomas Mueller getting the last touch.

Goetze struck again in the 70th minute, rifling in from a Mueller header.

Hakan Calhanoglu pulled one back for the hosts with a low drive from 18 metres in the 72nd but substitute Claudio Pizarro quickly restored order with a bicycle kick three minutes later.

Bayern were left with ten men when defender Jerome Boateng was sent off for headbutting Hamburg's Kemel Demirbay.

The result leaves Hamburg anchored in the relegation playoff spot with one game left.

Former European champions Hamburg, who are the only team never to have played in the second division since the creation of the Bundesliga in 1963, have 27 points in 16th place with Nuremberg, who lost 2-0 to Hanover 96, on 26.

Eintracht Braunschweig lost 1-0 at Augsburg thanks to a stoppage time chip by Raul Bobadilla to remain in last place with 25 points.

Schalke 04 took a big step towards securing automatic qualification to the Champions League, easing past Freiburg 2-0 with goals from defender Kaan Ayhan and forward Klaas-Jan Huntelaar to move up to 61 points, three ahead of Bayer Leverkusen in fourth.

Borussia Dortmund, who have long secured a second spot finish, edged past Hoffenheim 3-2 but with Dortmund's Robert Lewandowski, moving to rivals Bayern next season, failing to score in his last home game despite the crowd urnging him on.

VfB Stuttgart conceded a stoppage time Ivica Olic goal to lose 2-1 to VfL Wolfsburg but still secured another year in the top division, staying five points away from the playoff spot.

Wolfsburg moved to within a point of Leverkusen and can now challenge for a Champions League qualifying round spot and a fourth place finish.

Borussia Moenchengladbach made sure they would be playing in Europe next season with a 3-1 win over rivals Mainz 05. Gladbach moved up to sixth place on 55, with Mainz in seventh on 50. – Reuters, May 3, 2014

The Boston tapes that ensnared Gerry Adams

In the bars of South Boston, Irish-Americans reacted with shock on Thursday to the news that Gerry Adams, a man some regard as a hero for his role in the peace process, had been arrested in Northern Ireland in connection with a murder committed 42 years ago. – Reuters pic, May 3, 2014. For insight into why Sinn Fein president Gerry Adams was arrested this week for questioning about a notorious 1972 Belfast killing, venture across the Atlantic to a cradle of American academia.

In 2001 at 150-year-old Boston College, a prestigious Catholic institution in the city with America's largest Irish immigrant population, researchers quietly embarked on a project to interview participants in the Northern Ireland conflict known as the Troubles.

They set about constructing an oral history of the violent period, interviewing dozens of former Irish Republican Army members and participants in voluntary paramilitary groups that supported union with Britain.

With tensions still prompting fears of speaking out about the events of the late 1960s through the 1990s, interviewees were promised absolute anonymity until after their deaths.

That guarantee unraveled amid court orders, with potentially serious consequences for participants in Ireland, and fresh questions about academic freedom and the strength of researchers' confidentiality assertions in the face of a criminal investigation.

"Boston College sold us out," Belfast Project founder and journalist Ed Moloney told AFP, saying the school capitulated almost immediately when court officials demanded the recordings.

"They sold the interviewees out as well.

"Clearly, the project is playing a part (in the Adams case), but how much of a part, I have no idea."

The link to Adams traces back to 2008 with the death of interviewee Brendan Hughes, a former IRA member and close Adams friend, and the publication of Moloney's book, "Voices From the Grave," using material from the Hughes interview.

Fellow nationalist and Provisional IRA member Dolours Price, who was convicted for a 1973 attack on the Old Bailey criminal court in London, told Irish media that she too had been interviewed by Moloney's Belfast Project.

Price said she and Adams had been involved in the abduction and murder of 37-year-old mother of 10 Jean McConville, one of the most heinous crimes of the unrest.

Moloney insisted that Price "didn't say a word about Jean McConville in her interview with us."

Nevertheless, prompted by requests from the McConville family, the US Justice Department subpoenaed Boston College for the tapes and transcripts, and after a three-year legal battle led by Moloney, the school was forced to hand over much of the information.

In the midst of the fight, Moloney took his argument to Congress, imploring US senators like Boston College alumnus John Kerry and Robert Menendez to intervene to prevent the material from being used in civil suits, where the standard of proof is lower than in criminal cases.

Menendez took Kerry's spot as chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee after his predecessor became secretary of state.

Effort to discredit Adams

Adams, 65, has been the public face of the movement to end British sovereignty in Northern Ireland for the past 30 years, but the Sinn Fein leadership has said the claims against him are an effort to discredit the party and derail the peace process.

"That was our great fear, that material would be used to facilitate civil action against Gerry Adams to discredit him," Moloney said.

To date, just three people from the Belfast Project have been identified, including two who are now dead.

Moloney expects that the names of the others, at least theoretically, will remain under wraps – at least until they pass away.

But he warned that the case could have lasting repercussions for American universities, saying participants promised anonymity in US academic research would be "mad" to cooperate. – AFP, May 3, 2014.

Malaysia, a strong contender to become regional education hub but still misses the mark

Posted: 02 May 2014 07:12 PM PDT

May 03, 2014

In 2010, the Malaysian government laid down the foundation for the rapid development of public and private higher education institutions, allowing budgetary allocations to increase on an annual basis.

For 2012, an investment into higher education saw an estimated allocation of around RM12 billion. The year 2013 saw an allocation of RM52.8 billion, of which RM36.3 billion was spent by the end of August 2013.

To date this investment into the Malaysian higher education sector has seen growth in student enrolments (more local than international) and an increase in education institutions (HEIs) but not as desired for international acquisition.

Malaysia's target for acquiring international students by 2020 is set at 200,000. Currently, there are approximately 1.1 million higher education students in Malaysia of which only 80,000 are international students.

This number suggests that Malaysia is not on track to achieve its 2020 target to become the world's 6th largest education exporter.

Approximately 50% of international students in Malaysia come from Nigeria, Iran and Yemen. Looking forward, Malaysian higher education institutions will face serious challenges in attracting international students from these three countries due to:

* The Malaysian government has placed stricter measures on issuing student visas to Nigerian students considering their unacceptable social behaviour.

* The Iranian government will not acknowledge most Malaysian higher education institutions, restricting Malaysia as a destination of choice for Iranian students.

* The Yemeni government announced that they will stop funding their students for higher education at Private Malaysian higher education institutions.

By cause of internal and external policy shifts, there are good enough reasons to argue that Malaysia will continue to see a decline in the number of international students.

A greater concern for Malaysia is the fact that it has the right composition to become one of the popular study destinations for students consisting of an offering of low cost of living, numerous foreign university campuses, a constant effort to improve the student visa process, economy growth at 5.8%, among many others, yet it is unable to achieve the desired number of international students.

A few other prominent reasons for Malaysia missing its 2020 target include EMGS, stricter academic eligibility criteria and the most under discussed reason is the inability of Malaysia to market itself effectively as a popular study destination to its target audience.

Malaysian Higher education institutions as well as the government have both been ineffective in building a positive perception among international students mainly due to the heavy reliance of conventional mediums of communication.

Malaysia is yet to exploit the full potential of online mediums where its actual target market is searching for universities and courses. Google's statistics on higher education and students searching for suitable institutions last year revealed:

* 1 in every 4 students searched for suitable institutions online.

* 8 out of every 10 students will opt to apply online.

* 40% more students visited online education portals in the past year.

* 46% of students use online portals to make their final decision on their choice of education institution.

Considering the statistics, governments and HEIs need to acknowledge and invest in online mediums to ensure that they are found and always available on the web, including education portals, which are gaining massive popularity and allow more visibility to international students.

In the past, students had to rely on education agents or relatives' advice with no comparison tool to use when trying to compare institutions and courses, making the entire decision-making process a tedious one.

The recent emergence and adoption of online education portals has not only simplified this process but has also provided an unmatched platform to countries to connect with international students.

Countries such as China, Canada, UK and Australia which currently dominate the market, are constantly increasing their presence on education portals, Malaysia needs to follow suit.

Malaysia's commitment to higher education can be seen in its ability to provide low cost, high quality education; make 400 universities available to international students and their improved turn-around time for processing student visas.

Malaysia now needs to ensure that it uses digital mediums efficiently to promote its message across to the right people at the right time.

It is essential to further innovate through channels such as online education portals by marketing its message if it is to stand out among other Asian contenders in the pursuit of attracting and acquiring more international students. – www.easyuni.com, May 3, 2014.

‘F.B.I’ actor Efrem Zimbalist dies in California, say reports

Posted: 03 May 2014 01:22 AM PDT

May 03, 2014

Efrem Zimbalist Jr., who portrayed the indefatigable Inspector Lewis Erskine on the long-running American television series "The F.B.I.", died yesterday at the age of 95, according to media reports.

Zimbalist died at his home in Solvang, California, his daughter, actress Stephanie Zimbalist, and his son Efrem Zimbalist III, said in a statement, Hollywood trade magazine Variety and other media reported.

"A devout Christian, he actively enjoyed his life to the last day, showering love on his extended family, playing golf, and visiting with close friends," the statement said, according to Variety.

A spokesman for the family could not be immediately reached for comment.

From the late 1950s to the mid-1970s, Zimbalist was one of the top stars on US television, playing a private detective on the ABC series "77 Sunset Strip" from 1958 to 1964 before his stint on "The F.B.I." on the same network from 1965 to 1974.

Zimbalist, the son of opera singer Alma Gluck and concert violinist Efrem Zimbalist Sr., also appeared in about 20 movies – usually in supporting roles but sometimes as the leading man.
He was born on Nov. 30, 1918, in New York and saw US Army combat duty during World War Two.

During its nine seasons on the air, "The F.B.I." dramatized the Federal Bureau of Investigation as its agents solved murders, kidnappings and bank heists. Its episodes – inspired by real cases – required FBI approval.

Zimbalist portrayed Erskine as an assiduous, dedicated investigator during an era when the FBI in real life was embroiled in America's tumult during the Vietnam War era.

The actor said the FBI's larger-than-life director J. Edgar Hoover was initially reluctant to give his permission for the series and "was not a lover of Hollywood." The two eventually met and had a steady correspondence.

In 2009, the FBI honored Zimbalist, at age 90, in a ceremony in Los Angeles in which agency Director Robert Mueller presented him with an honorary special agent badge.

Mueller said Zimbalist over the years helped the FBI by narrating recruitment commercials and taking part in fundraising events for children of agents killed in the line of duty.

"I'm a conservative Republican," Zimbalist told the Oklahoman newspaper in 2011. "And I wasn't a friend of the FBI just because I was in the show. My philosophy is the same. I was deeply aware of the sentiment against the bureau and against Hoover."

On "77 Sunset Strip," a show that was more carefree than "The F.B.I," Zimbalist played wisecracking private detective Stu Bailey, starring alongside Roger Smith and Edd Byrnes.

Zimbalist appeared occasionally with his daughter Stephanie Zimbalist on her 1980s TV series "Remington Steele" with Pierce Brosnan, and later did voice work for animated TV shows.

His supporting movie roles included parts in "House of Strangers" (1949) with Edward G. Robinson, "Band of Angels" (1957) with Clark Gable and Sidney Poitier, "Too Much, Too Soon" (1958) with Errol Flynn, "Airport 1975" (1974) with Charlton Heston and "Hot Shots!" (1991) with Charlie Sheen.

He was sometimes a leading man, as in "Harlow" in 1965 with Carol Lynley and "The Chapman Report" in 1962 with Jane Fonda. – Reuters, May 3, 2014

A tale of two cities

Posted: 02 May 2014 07:05 PM PDT

May 03, 2014

As a player, Shebby Singh won everything there was to win in Malaysia football, and represented the country on the international stage.

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times... so wrote Charles Dickens in his opening line for his book of the same title as the headline above.

That could not be more apt to describe what has transpired and what could transpire this week in two major cities – one in Spain, the other in England.

While there is joy in the city of Madrid after two rival clubs created history, making it the first time ever that two clubs from the same city play in the final of the UEFA Champions League, things are a little different in the north of England.

The city of Liverpool will need to unite to help Liverpool win their maiden Premier League title.

How ironic is it that Everton, their poor neighbours, now quite perhaps could end the long title drought of their arch rivals tonight.

And that is all because Liverpool's title fate was rudely ripped out of their hands when Chelsea stunned them at Anfield last Sunday, thanks to a Steven Gerrard error and the resilience of reactive football.

The pursuit of Champions League football drives Everton to want to finish fourth, and this ambition is what Liverpool will be banking upon to prevail when Goodison Park welcomes title contenders Manchester City (tonight, 12.30am, Sunday).

So, as it turns out, everything does lie in the arms of the Blue side of the river Mersey.

At best, one team could be crowned champions of England, and both teams could take part in the lucrative Champions League next season, and at worse, there is all-round disappointment with Liverpool finishing second and Everton pipped by Spurs or Manchester United for a spot in the Europa League.

One does wonder if the bitterness in the blue half of the City of Liverpool is still present after almost three decades.

This is from Everton being denied European Cup football in both 1985 and 1987, despite becoming English Division One champions those two years, because of the 1985 European Cup Final tragedy in Heysel involving Liverpool and Juventus.

All the memories among older Everton fans are sure to come flooding back, but the lack of pursuit of Europe's biggest trophy then leaves no place for revenge. I certainly would not want to be an Everton fan at the moment, the emotional burden is just too much to bear.

Lose to Manchester City and dig a hole for Liverpool to fall into, or beat Manchester City and stick a dagger into their own hearts? Good luck, Everton.

Manchester City must not slip up, surely not now. Manuel Pellegrini knows that every match is a must-win, and he has to ingrain this "do or die" mentality into his squad to bring home a second come-from-behind, and likely goal-difference, title win.

Sense and sensitivities

Getting back to the City of Madrid, a great homecoming has been planned to usher in the Kings of European Club Football.

The venue is the City of Lisbon, at the Stadium of Light. As both Real and Atletico battle for European supremacy, one club could also be domestic champions looking for a double.

Ironically, a calm and collected Italian is in charge of one side, while the other has a fiery Argentinian guiding them.

It will be seen to be more than a football match, and a battle between traditional social classes prevalent in the capital of Spain will be met on the field with the same passion.

It is most befitting for the likes of defending World Cup champions Spain to brighten the finale of European club football in this World Cup year.

It is also a great achievement for the city of Madrid to have outplayed the best of Germany and the loudest in England.

Speaking of whom, Jose Mourinho was very un-Mourinho-like at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night, making rash substitution decisions that ultimately failed to offer Chelsea any threat to Diego Simeone's well-drilled Atletico Madrid side.

An equaliser conceded before half-time seemed ominous, but one expected Mourinho to be measured in his decision-making in the final 45 minutes.

A penalty given away by substitute Samuel Eto'o dug a deeper hole for the Blues to climb out of, and David Luiz had a brilliant header smashed off the post which perhaps could have changed the final outcome.

Another forward came on, but as Eden Hazard put it, Chelsea are simply not built to play football. For a manager to throw on all strikers at his disposal (these strikers have been victim to Jose's words to the press this season) with so much time remaining either means desperation or an attempt to make a point.

Either way, a Madrid derby in the final could see Real Madrid win their 10th ever European Cup, or Atletico could ruin Real's season (perhaps even a decade) by doing the league and European Cup double.

If Atletico is to have any hope at all, the would have to stop the amazing trio of Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema and Gareth Bale, that make up the heart of Real's attacking force that helped thrash the mighty Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena.

Sergio Ramos, too, was impeccable at the back, dominating Mario Mandzukic in the same way he dominated Robert Lewandowski last season.

His two-headed goals just rewards for a footballer so often ridiculed for a ballooned penalty and fiery passion – after all, you don't get to the Real Madrid disciplinary record books without dedication to the craft.

Bayern's Toni Kroos was ineffective, offering little when operating within his own half.

Javi Martinez' lack of a start once again was perplexing, as the Spaniard once again offered calm in the middle of the park when Bayern Munich seemed to have lost the plot.

German national and club captain Philip Lahm played commendably, and Cristiano Ronaldo broke another record on his way to a seemingly fated final in his home town of Lisbon.

Bayern Munich still are tipped to complete a domestic double, but it does seem to matter little for a season which promised unrivalled dominance in Europe once again.

Suddenly, Pep Guardiola has become a bad coach because Bayern Munich lost 5-0 on aggregate to Real Madrid. With the Bundesliga title sewn up a long time ago, and yes, it is a long time ago, it is easy to criticise a legend (both as a manager and a footballer) who remains one of the last bastions of "total" football.

Now, let us all go back to parking the bus so football will be all about winning while putting crowds around the world asleep effortlessly.

The effort and skills that are sought to keep football the spectacle that attracts the world's attention all go to nought when a few coaches or managers lack the creative juices to operate free-flowing, attractive football at the very top level.

The individual is successful, but the legacy left behind for future fans and purists leaves a bad taste in the mouth.

Now let us hope that negative football does not spoil or stink up the greatest football fiesta in the world, the World Cup 2014, held ironically in the land of samba. Jogo Bonito anyone? – May 3, 2014.

Apocalipso; yang asal dan yang menjadi

Posted: 02 May 2014 05:11 PM PDT

May 03, 2014

Memang sukar hendak menjawabnya.

– 3 Mei, 2014.
