Wendy’s goes upscale with fireside dining

Posted: 24 Feb 2013 11:08 PM PST

February 25, 2013

NEW YORK, Feb 25 — The next generation of Wendy's restaurants around the world is going high-brow, with lounge seating, fireplaces, flat screen TVs, and Wi-Fi access.

Taking cues from McDonald's, which revamped its restaurants system-wide and got rid of their gaudy red and yellow motif for sleek, modern overhauls, customers at Wendy's will also be able to sink into armchairs, tuck into fireside meals of burgers and fries while being entertained on big-screen TVs.

Sandwich chain Subway has also piloted an upscale version of their outlets with the Subway Café, where customers in test markets across the US are able to sip on espressos in a wood-panelled, lounge-style setting and fireplace.

As part of their overhaul, Wendy's is launching menu items including a North Pacific Cod sandwich for a limited time during the Lenten season.

The chain has also launched a mobile nutrition app that allows customers to build their meals based on calorie counts and a digital campaign meant to engage with their consumers.

Claimyourtaste.com, for instance, allows customers to "claim" their favourite meal combinations in the Hall of Taste.

The chain expects to revamp 50 per cent of their North American restaurants by the end of 2015. More than 75 restaurants have already been overhauled in the US, while plans are afoot to renovate 200 throughout North America and their international markets this year.

Falcao keeps 10-man Atletico perfect at home

MADRID, Feb 25 – Radamel Falcao's penalty ensured 10-man Atletico Madrid preserved their 100 per cent home record in La Liga with a 1-0 victory over resurgent Espanyol yesterday.

The Colombia striker netted his 21st goal of the campaign in the 38th minute, only to see his captain Gabi sent off for a second bookable offence on the stroke of halftime to leave Atletico with a man less for the entire second period.

Diego Simeone's side stood firm and moved on to 56 points from 25 games in second place, 12 behind leaders Barcelona who came from behind to beat Sevilla 2-1 at home on Saturday.

"We played a good first half, but the second with a man less was almost better," Argentine Simeone told a news conference.

"The effort put in was extraordinary."

Champions Real Madrid are third with 52 points after a 2-1 comeback win at basement side Deportivo Coruna, also on Saturday.

Fourth-placed Malaga, who lost 1-0 at Porto in the Champions League last week, were well beaten 3-0 at Real Betis to stay on 42 points. Betis climbed to seventh with 39.

Simeone fielded a full-strength side at the Calderon unlike fellow King's Cup semi-finalists Barca and Real, who meet for their second leg on Tuesday and Atletico's opponents Sevilla, who they visit on Wednesday.

Atletico put the visitors under intense pressure, eventually winning a penalty when the outstanding Diego Costa was brought down in the area.

Falcao sent the keeper the wrong way from the spot and with a man less following Gabi's sending-off the hosts outwitted Espanyol in the second half to make it 13 league wins from 13 at the Calderon this season.

Javier Aguirre's visitors, 13th with 31 points, slipped to only their second defeat in 12 outings since the Mexican took the helm from Mauricio Pochettino with the side bottom in late November.

TELEVISION REPLAYS

Betis took the lead against Malaga inside the first minute when Jorge Molina headed in at a corner and they doubled their lead when Mario powered in another header from a corner in the 27th.

With Benat Etxebarria pulling the strings in midfield Betis were rampant, and they should have had their third when Molina's penalty hit the crossbar bounced down and out in the 35th.

Television replays showed the ball had crossed the line.

Dorlan Pabon made it 3-0 from the narrowest of angles before the break, and Malaga's comeback hopes withered when Ignacio Camacho was sent off in the 62nd.

Earlier, Rayo Vallecano's push for European football next season suffered a blow when they lost 2-1 at home to Real Valladolid to drop to eighth with 37 points.

Rayo defender Jordi Amat scored an own goal in the 71st minute but rectified the situation a minute later when he caught the visiting keeper off his line with a spectacular shot from around 40 metres out.

Former Manchester United striker Manucho grabbed Valladolid's winner with 10 minutes remaining.

Elsewhere, new Celta Vigo coach Abel Resino started with a 2-1 home victory over former club Granada, as the Galicians notched a first win in seven outings.

Mario Bermejo's 81st-minute winner came from a wildly miss-hit shot which bounced inside the far post as the keeper watched helplessly. Celta stayed in the bottom three with 23 points. – Reuters

Priority elsewhere as Barca and Real meet in Cup

MADRID, Feb 24 — With crucial Champions League games looming, Barcelona and Real Madrid could have done without the distraction of playing each other twice in five days, starting with a King's Cup semi-final second leg on Tuesday (2000 GMT).

The two "Clasicos" — the second a La Liga clash at the Bernabeu yesterday — will provide rich entertainment for fans but they are relatively insignificant compared to Barca's game at home to AC Milan on March 12 and Real's match at Manchester United a week earlier.

The King's Cup is never a priority for Spain's dominant pair as long as they are still alive in Europe's elite club competition and the domestic league, and Real have all but given up on a second consecutive La Liga title after slipping 16 points behind leaders Barca with 13 games left.

Barca are still reeling after going down 2-0 to Milan at the San Siro in Wednesday's last-16 first leg, though they picked themselves up and fought back from a goal down for a 2-1 La Liga win at home to Sevilla yesterday.

Real, held to a 1-1 draw by United at the Bernabeu On February 13, also came from a goal down to win yesterday, beating bottom side Deportivo La Coruna 2-1 at the Riazor with Cristiano Ronaldo coming off the bench to set up Gonzalo Higuain for the winner.

Assistant Barca coach Jordi Roura, standing in for Tito Vilanova who is recovering from throat surgery, praised his players for putting Wednesday's shock reverse behind them.

"You can lose a match but the really important thing is the reaction," he told a news conference after the Sevilla game.

"It was a really tough game and they scored against us while we had the match more under control," he added.

"But once again the team rose to the occasion and showed the pride needed to secure a very important victory for the league campaign. Their reaction was splendid."

SLAVISH ADHERENCE

Cup holders Barca have a slight advantage ahead of Real's visit to the Nou Camp, which will be the 224th meeting between the arch rivals in all competitions, after they secured a 1-1 draw at the Bernabeu in last month's first leg.

Cesc Fabregas fired Barca ahead five minutes after halftime and Raphael Varane nodded in an equaliser for Real nine minutes from the end.

Real beat Barca 1-0 to win the Cup in 2011 and Barca eliminated them in the last eight last term.

The successful side after Tuesday's showdown will meet Atletico Madrid or Sevilla in May's final.

The pair meet at Sevilla's Sanchez Pizjuan stadium on Wednesday (2100) with Atletico holding a 2-1 advantage from the first leg at the Calderon.

Barca struggled to create scoring chances against both Milan and Sevilla, leading some to question their slavish adherence to a possession-based playing style and ask whether they had an effective "Plan B" when faced with ultra-defensive sides.

They have also found it tough to keep a clean sheet in recent outings and Roura said it was something they needed to improve if they were to keep alive their hopes of a treble of trophies this term.

"It's true that we are having the odd problem in that sense and it's something to improve on, above all in our positioning in defence," Roura said.

"Obviously it concerns us and we want to improve that and other things," he added.

Barca's World Player of the Year Lionel Messi can equal the record goal tally for "Clasicos" of 18 held by former Real great Alfredo Di Stefano with a goal on Tuesday. — Reuters

STOCKHOLM, Feb 24 — Lego has revealed a sneak peek of what to expect when its latest Star Wars set goes on sale in May.

The limited-edition Red-Five X-Wing Starfighter will retail for US$200 (RM620) when it officially launches and while it is by no means the company's first Star Wars-themed toy or even its first attempt at creating an X-Wing Fighter from Lego bricks, it is the most detailed and intricate version produced to date and includes new pieces developed specifically to capture even more details that fans of the original film will be familiar with.

Chief among these is a reworked cockpit that now includes the targeting computer, made famous in "Episode IV" of the franchise, as well as reworked exhaust ports and a new mechanism to "lock S-foils in attack position."

As the chief designer on the project explains in a video: "I based the model on the classic Episode IV, more specifically on the Death Star attack and trench run. I've been watching those scenes over and over again just to look at the details."

The set includes 1,558 pieces and the finished model will measure 26cm x 52cm x 46cm when built, and though owners will be tempted to run around their lounge (or their bedroom if they have guests) re-enacting one of the most famous scenes in modern movie history, the X-Wing also comes with a solid stand so that it can be displayed safely on a shelf or in a cabinet when completed. — AFP/Relaxnews

Tua Pek Kong: Good year for the economy

GEORGE TOWN, Feb 24 ― The Year of the Snake will be a good one for Malaysia's economy, a deity predicted during the annual "Chneah Hoay" (flame watching) ceremony at the Hai Choo Soo (Sea Pearl) Temple in Tanjung Tokong here.

The deity, Tua Pek Kong, predicted the economy would see improvement in the first quarter to be followed by robust growth in the second and third quarter.

More than 600 of devotees crowded around the temple to pray and seek blessings in the early hours of Sunday as they awaited the announcement of the predictions.

Devotees are not allowed to enter the temple to watch the "Chneah Hoay" ceremony as only the temple committee members are allowed to conduct the ceremony and watch the predictions.

The Chneah Hoay ceremony is traditionally held on the eve of Chap Goh Meh at the temple.

During the ceremony, the deity is believed to be able to predict the country's economy for the new year through the flames of about 100 burning joss sticks.

All lights, candles and oil lamps were also put out at the temple so that the Poh Hock Seah temple committee members can observe the flames to "read" the predictions.

The temple committee members will fan the embers of the burning joss sticks and the prediction is gathered from the height and intensity of the flames and the speed with which the embers flare up in the urn.

The embers are fanned three times.

The ceremony started at about 11.50pm and ended slightly after midnight.

According to temple committee president Datuk Lim Chooi Beng, in the first fanning, the embers from the burning joss sticks flared up after one minute which signified a "fast" growing economy for the first quarter.

"In the second fanning, the embers flared up after two minutes and it flared up to two-feet high and this showed a very good economic growth in the second quarter," he said.

The third fanning took about five minutes to flare up, but due to the intensity and height of the flames, it also signified a good and stable economy.

"Overall, the deity predicted a growing economy for this year which is be better than the predictions of the last five years," he said.

He added that the flames had flared up in the shape of a snake slithering up which means that the country's economy is on its way up.

The temple has practised this Chneah Hoay ceremony for close to two centuries and it is believed to be the only temple in the country to do so every year.

PI Bala returns, vows to help oust BN

Posted: 24 Feb 2013 08:05 AM PST

By Md Izwan
February 25, 2013

SEPANG, Feb 24 — Private investigator P. Balasubramaniam returned to Malaysia today, vowing to help voters and Pakatan Rakyat (PR) oust the Barisan Nasional (BN) government in Election 2013. Balasubramaniam fled the country since he made a second sworn statement to refute his first statutory declaration (SD) that implicated Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor in the 2006 murder of Mongolian Altantuya Shaaribuu.

Talks had been circulating that he was planning to return home and campaign for the federal opposition bloc. "I came back because I want to be with my fellow Malaysians.

We must change this corrupt government. "If we let them govern for 50 years more this country will be ruined," he told some 50 PKR supporters who greeted him at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport here upon his arrival from India.

The former private investigator also swore that he had made the second SD under duress while claiming that the allegations contained in the first statement was the truth.

Balasubramaniam (picture) had said in the past that he fled the country after he and his family received death threats.

"I had no other choice. I had to take my family out of the country," he said.

The former PI confirmed that controversial carpet dealer Deepak Jaikishan had assisted in the drafting of the second SD.

NY ‘cannibal cop’ trial to spotlight violent sex fantasy subculture

Posted: 24 Feb 2013 08:02 AM PST

February 25, 2013

NEW YORK, Feb 24 — The New York federal trial of accused "cannibal cop" Gilberto Valle due to start tomorrow promises to highlight an online subculture where people trade violent sexual fantasies.

New York City police officer, Gilberto Valle, is charged with plotting to kidnap, torture, cook and eat at least 100 women. — AFP pic

Sex crimes prosecutors, First Amendment defence attorneys and sexual behaviourists said they had never before heard of a suspected conspiracy to commit a violent sexual crime begun on a website for violent sexual fantasy role-play.

"It's the perfect alibi," said former Manhattan sex crimes prosecutor Linda Fairstein, who is not involved in the Valle case, which is being prosecuted in Manhattan by the US Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York.

"A case of this magnitude, and of this nature, may make case law," Fairstein said.

Opening arguments were expected to begin tomorrow afternoon.

Valle has pleaded not guilty to conspiring with New Jersey mechanic Michael Van Hise to kidnap, cannibalise and kill a Manhattan woman.

Valle has said he was merely engaged in online fetish role-play and never intended to commit a crime.

Federal authorities contend he took real action outside the role-play websites.

Investigators say Valle compiled an online dossier with the names and in some cases photos or physical descriptions of more than 100 women, and discussed targeting some of them for kidnap and murder.

They say he met one woman for brunch, improperly accessed a police database to get information on another, and engaged in surveillance of a third, a high school senior of whom Valle wrote to a fellow fetishist that "she is the most desirable piece of meat I've ever met."

Prosecutors have also said Valle searched online for homemade chloroform recipes so he could "knock out" a Manhattan woman and deliver her to Van Hise.

The pair also discussed "slow cooking" the woman to keep her alive as long as possible, prosecutors contend.

Defence attorneys for both men have said the goal of role-play is to make it as realistic as possible, enhancing the thrill.

"You draw on your real life to make it as real as possible, but it's fantasy," Van Hise's attorney Alice Fontier told a judge recently.

Sex crime investigators have been monitoring chat rooms and fetish websites for child molesters since the advent of the Internet. But violent sex fantasy role-playing sites present a new level of legal complexity.

"Everybody is concerned about individuals whose sex fantasies reflect a dangerous mindset," said Martin Klein, a sex therapist who has testified in state and federal sex crimes cases. "The problem is the people that are actually dangerous — their fantasies tend to look very, very similar to those of healthy people. On the Internet, the line between imagination and behaviour has gotten really very thin." — Reuters

‘Lincoln,’ ‘Argo’ in tight race as Oscars roll out red carpet

LOS ANGELES, Feb 24 — The Oscars rolled out the red carpet today for the movie industry's biggest night, with Iran hostage drama "Argo" and presidential drama "Lincoln" in a tight race for Best Picture.

With several contests too close to call, a slate of big box office hits to celebrate and an unpredictable first-time host in Seth MacFarlane, movie fans could be in for surprises when the curtain rises on the 85th annual Academy Awards.

Before the festivities begin, nominees including Jennifer Lawrence, Hugh Jackman, Sally Field, Jessica Chastain, British singer Adele and "Argo" producer George Clooney, along with performers Barbra Streisand and Jennifer Hudson will parade along the 500-ft long (152 meter) red carpet before dozens of photographers and camera crews.

Inside Hollywood's Dolby Theatre, Academy Awards history could be re-written.

Daniel Day-Lewis as US President Abraham Lincoln is considered an unstoppable force to become the first man to win three Best Actor Oscars.

Buzz is building over a possible late upset by France's Emmanuelle Riva, 86, in the Best Actress contest that would make the star of harrowing Austrian entry "Amour" the oldest person ever to win an acting Oscar.

"Lincoln" goes into today's three-hour plus ceremony with a leading 12 nominations, including a directing nod for double Oscar winner Steven Spielberg.

But its front-runner Best Picture status has been dented by the six-week victory streak enjoyed at other Hollywood awards by Ben Affleck's "Argo."

"It's been an interesting year," said Matt Atchity, editor in chief of movie review website Rotten Tomatoes.

"I think 'Argo' probably has the best shot. It's certainly got the momentum. It has won so many top awards, and I think it's probably the movie to beat," Atchity told Reuters.

If "Argo" does prevail for the top prize, it will be the first movie to win Best Picture without its director even getting a nomination since "Driving Miss Daisy" in 1990.

ANNE HATHAWAY OSCAR BOUND

Musical "Les Miserables," comedy "Silver Linings Playbook," shipwreck tale "Life of Pi," Osama bin laden thriller "Zero Dark Thirty," slavery Western "Django Unchained," indie film "Beasts of the Southern Wild," and "Amour" round out the contenders for the best film of 2012.

In other categories, only Anne Hathaway is considered a sure bet to take home a golden statuette after starving herself and chopping off her long brown locks for her supporting turn as tragic heroine Fantine in "Les Miserables.

Awards pundits says Spielberg could lose out in the director's race to Taiwan's Ang Lee for his technical and imaginative feat in filming fantastical adventure "Life of Pi" with a cast of exotic animals.

And the supporting actor Oscar could go to any of the five nominees — Robert De Niro ("Silver Linings Playbook"), Alan Arkin ("Argo"), Christoph Waltz ("Django Unchained"), Tommy Lee Jones ("Lincoln") and Philip Seymour Hoffman ("The Master").

The Oscar winners are chosen in secret ballots by some 5,800 members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and handed out before an audience of 3,300 guests and tens of millions more watching around the world on television.

After several years of nominating little-seen movies, this year's nine Best Picture contenders have pulled in more than US$2 billion (RM6 billion) in tickets worldwide.

"We are so fortunate to inherit this great group of films that are also popular at the box office ... We just lucked out and had this fantastic year in film," Academy Awards telecast co-producer Neil Meron told Reuters.

Producers are promising a fast-paced show packed with music and big performances. But the man getting the early attention will be MacFarlane, the provocative comedian behind animated TV series "Family Guy" and an unknown quantity as Oscar host.

"We are not going to know what works until we put it out there and see what plays in front of an audience," co-producer Craig Zadan said.

"It's a live show and that is always unpredictable. Once the train has left the station, whatever happens, happens."

The Academy Awards will be broadcast live on ABC television in the United States, starting at 5pm PST (0100 GMT). — Reuters

Britain’s first Oscar-winning animator Bob Godfrey dies at 91

Posted: 24 Feb 2013 01:53 AM PST

February 24, 2013

LONDON, Feb 24 — Britain's first Oscar-winning animator Bob Godfrey, whose work ranged from the children's TV cartoon "Roobarb" to mock-erotic movies like "Kama Sutra Rides Again", has died aged 91, his family told the BBC on Friday.

Godfrey, often referred to as "The Godfather of British Animation", was born in Australia but educated in England and started his career as a graphic artist in London in the 1930s before gaining work in the film industry.

He was the first British animator to win an Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film for his 1975 musical comedy "Great", about civil engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel.

Godfrey was nominated three other times for Oscars, including for his 1971 short film "Kama Sutra Rides Again", one of his mock-erotic exploitation films that focused on the hypocrisy of British attitudes towards sex.

Filmmaker Stanley Kubrick so admired the film that he screened it alongside UK showings of "A Clockwork Orange".

"Much of Godfrey's work has been predicated on satirising the foibles and minutiae of what it means to be 'British'," said his biography on the British Film Institute website.

For nearly 50 years Godfrey worked with some of animation's biggest names including Monty Python's Terry Gilliam, poking fun at orthodoxy and establishment thinking. He retired in 1999.

His work ran along two tracks — adult material and quirky children's cartoons, which he wanted to appeal to adults too.

He was known for his children's cartoons "Roobarb", about a warring cat and dog, and "Henry's Cat".

His death comes after the death today of veteran actor Richard Briers, aged 79, who narrated "Roobarb" and also the character of Brunel in Godfrey's film "Great".

Aardman Animations studio founder Peter Lord tweeted: "Dear old Bob Godfrey is no more. A great influence and inspiration to me and my generation of animators. Also a lovely bloke."

In an interview with the Guardian in 2001, Godfrey said he had one professional regret.

"I'd love to have done a full-length feature but I can't seem to stretch myself to that length," he told the newspaper.

"When you look at my films, they appear to be a series of 30-second commercials cut together. I'm a short distance man whether I like it or not." — Reuters

Jangan nafi calon pilihan rakyat

Posted: 23 Feb 2013 06:04 PM PST

"Kerja mereka (pembangkang) hanyalah mengelirukan rakyat.

— Bernama

Posted: 24 Feb 2013 02:54 AM PST

— Bernama
