A feast in the Hakka heartland

Posted: 22 Jul 2011 05:43 PM PDT

Mui Choy Kau Yook is as Hakka as you get. — Pictures by Eu Hooi Khaw

KUALA LUMPUR, July 23 — When our friend J suggested an eating jaunt to Seri Kembangan on a weekend, we were all for it. With her exacting high standards in food, we were sure we would be on to a good thing. So there we were at Restoran Chen Fatt, a place that has been around for 40 years!

It's a place for hearty Hakka food and J rattles off the order: Mooi Choy Kau Yook (braised belly pork with preserved vegetables), Tofu Kang which she refers to as fake shark's fin, Por Loh Kuat (pineapple pork ribs), Chee Pau Kei (paper wrapped chicken), Assam Fish and Mango Tofu.

The well-balanced flavours in this Assam Fish makes it a winner.

Now that's a lot of food for four women. But the two of us discovered they also had Chicken in Rice Wine, and yes, we wanted that as well. It was a feast!

First, the Tofu Kang is a thick broth of mashed beancurd, lavish with crabmeat and mushrooms. There's a lovely aroma of wine as you stir the broth. It's so good that you would want a second helping.

No meal in a Hakka restaurant is complete without Mui Choy Kau Yook. There's a certain finesse about this pork dish with robust flavours. It is the light-coloured mui choy or pickled mustard that's used to cook it.

It's just slightly sweet, but still strong with mui choy flavour that imbues the belly pork it's been stewed with. Bite into a slice of tender meat, with the fat almost melting on it, and savour both a little saltiness and sweetness. It tastes just wonderful. I had two pieces of this.

The Mango Tofu is fried cubes of tofu tossed kerabu-style with fresh mango strips, onions, cili padi, lime juice and thin deep-fried pieces of cuttlefish. This perfect balance of sweet, sour and hot — you enjoy the tart mango with the crispy yet soft pieces of tofu. When J commented the cuttlefish was not crispy enough, a bowl of fried cuttlefish appeared — thoroughly crisp! That's service for you.

Chee Pau Kei or paper-wrapped chicken is a speciality in Seri Kembangan. There has been much debate about who (in a particular family long known for this dish) makes the best one.

Chicken in Rice Wine was absolutely yummy... sweet, hot and zesty.

We thought Chen Fatt produced a pretty decent chee pau kei.  I unwrapped mine to the stirring aroma of ginger, which had got into every fibre of the chicken drumstick. The smooth and firm meat fell off the bone; there was a honeyed taste to it without being too sweet. It was so good.

We gave an "A" for presentation to the Pineapple Pork Ribs, which appeared in a hollowed-out pineapple. We got meaty ribs with a bit of belly fat attached to it, which made the pork more succulent and not dry when cooked in this fashion. The meat glistened with the sweet and sour sauce it had been cooked in, as did the juicy chunks of pineapple.

The Assam Fish was a red tilapia cooked in a light assam curry together with ladies fingers, cabbage and tomato. It was not just a pre-cooked assam sauce poured over the fish.

The flavours of the curry got into fish, in a mellower way, and it tasted all the better for it. I loved it that there was cabbage in it and of course ladies fingers. We didn't finish the fish and I packed the rest of it home for dinner, and it was still good.

I must have my Wong Chau Kei or Chicken in Rice Wine if I know it's on the menu. So we had this large claypot of kampong chicken in wine still bubbling brought to the table. We paused to breathe in all these gingery, winey aromas.

I liked it that the wine was slightly sweet, and the ginger was chopped into tiny bits so that the hotness got into the wine, and you could eat all the ginger (it's good for you!).

Pineapple Pork Ribs tasted as good as it looked.

There's wood fungus in the stew and the balance of flavours was so perfect. I wonder if they do this ginger egg omelette in wine, too, that women in confinement usually eat.

After all this food, J still asked us whether we would like to try the Yat Har Liong Mei (prawns that have the head steamed and the body fried in superior soya sauce). We said no, but would definitely come back for this one, the Kiong Yoong or Ginger Steamed Fish, Lin Chee Ngap (like an eight treasure duck) and steamed Yim Kei.

We paid just RM150 for all the food we had, including takeaways of Paper Wrapped Chicken and Mui Choy Kau Yook.

Restoran Chen Fatt is located at No. 1487-B, Jalan Besar, Seri Kembangan, 4330 Selangor. Tel: 03-8948 6673.

Fined Hamilton says pole impossible for McLaren

NUERBURGRING, July 22 — Lewis Hamilton ruled out pole position for McLaren this weekend after the Briton and teammate Jenson Button again laboured in practice at the German Grand Prix today.

The 2008 world champion, who was also fined 1,200 euros (RM5,132) for speeding in the pitlane, was around a second behind pacesetters Mark Webber of Red Bull and Ferrari's Fernando Alonso.

"We definitely can't challenge for pole, having said that we don't know what fuel (load) they are on," he told reporters.

"I think our race pace is perhaps closer than we had in the last race (at Silverstone) which is a good thing but over a single lap, they have definitely got about a second on us. We are pushing as hard as we can, the car's feeling pretty good."

While Hamilton was seventh quickest in the second session, Button could only manage the 11th best time with the pair now realising that any hope of a title tilt this year is all but over.

With 10 races remaining, both McLaren drivers are 95 points adrift of Red Bull's world champion Sebastian Vettel.

"It was one to forget, it's been a pretty tricky day," said Hamilton, fearing rain for tomorrow's qualifying and possibly Sunday's race.

"All afternoon I haven't had KERS. I had a problem with the exhaust but it's a test part on the car and it failed." — Reuters

Barcelona agree to sell forward Bojan to Roma

MADRID, July 22 — Barcelona have agreed to sell Bojan Krkic to Serie A side AS Roma for 12 million euros (RM51.2 million) in an unusual deal that includes a commitment to buy the Spain under-21 forward back in two years.

The Spanish and European champions will repurchase Bojan at the end of the 2012-13 season for 13 million euros unless Roma decide they want to keep him, the La Liga club said on their website today.

In that case, the Italian club will have to pay another 28 million, Barca said.

"The buyback clause can be blocked by AS Roma but in that case the total cost of the transfer would be 40 million euros," they added.

The structure of the deal reflects Barca's desire to keep their options open when it comes to holding on to promising players who have come through the club's famed youth academy but are not getting much playing time with the first team.

The 20-year-old Bojan, who said at an emotional farewell news conference he was unhappy with the way coach Pep Guardiola had treated him, joined the Catalan club's boys team in the 1999-2000 season.

He made his first-team debut against Osasuna in September 2007 and the following month became the Barca's youngest scorer in La Liga with a goal against Villarreal at the age of 17 years 53 days.

The baby-faced striker has won a host of trophies over the past three seasons but is not one of Guardiola's first-choice forwards and has spent most of the time on the bench behind Lionel Messi, David Villa and Pedro in the pecking order.

He will join up with former Barca and Spain midfielder Luis Enrique, who has moved to the Italian capital to take charge of Roma after a successful season coaching Barca's B team.

POSITIVES REMEMBERED

At a news conference attended by team captains Carles Puyol and Xavi and sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta, Bojan said he was hoping to rediscover the joy of playing.

"As a fan and club member I believe Pep is the best coach Barca could have," he said.

"But as a player there are things I do not agree with and which I felt very bad about."

He added that not playing in Barca's Champions League final victory over Manchester United in London in May had been painful, particularly as he was also left out for the 2009 final in Rome.

"There was not much confidence shown in me. I wasn't given the continuity needed to show what I can do," he said.

"But I am also aware that I am privileged to have been part of the first team, of a magnificent team that has made Barca into the world's best.

"For that reason I am not leaving with feelings of hurt. I will remember the positives."

Bojan scored 41 goals in 163 appearances for Barca, 26 in the league, nine in the King's Cup, five in the Champions League and one in the Spanish Super Cup. — Reuters

Chinese medicine could treat Parkinson’s: HK study

HONG KONG, July 22 – Chinese medicine may be effective in battling certain symptoms of Parkinson's disease, and lessening side effects from the drugs used to treat the condition, according to a new study.

Researchers at Hong Kong Baptist University said Gouteng, a traditional Chinese herb used to treat hypertension, helped patients better communicate and made them less prone to depression and sleeping difficulties.

"There is no cure for Parkinson's right now, but the study showed Chinese medicine can help treat the disease," a university spokesman told AFP yesterday.

Parkinson's is a progressive motor-system disorder which usually affects people over the age of 50, although it can strike earlier, often causing severe symptoms including body trembling, stiffness and loss of balance.

The condition is usually treated with a drug called levodopa, which the brain converts into dopamine to relieve the symptoms, but it can also cause nausea and hallucinations.

The Baptist University study found that patients who took Gouteng together with levodopa experienced fewer side effects from the drug while showing a marked improvement in their communication skills.

Li Min, an associate professor who led the study, said the findings could also help boost the profile of Chinese medicine.

"They provide not only pharmacological proof of the efficacy of Gouteng in treating Parkinson's disease, but will also help promote the effectiveness and safety of Chinese medicine to the international medical arena," she said.

Li – whose team has applied for a US patent – told the South China Morning Post that she expects the herb would start being used to treat the disease after the second phase of the study in 2013. – AFP

Hubble detects a tiny fourth moon around Pluto

Posted: 22 Jul 2011 01:38 AM PDT

WASHINGTON, July 22 — The Hubble Space Telescope has discovered a tiny fourth moon orbiting the distant icy dwarf planet Pluto, according to Nasa.

The space telescope was searching for rings around the planetary oddball at the edge of our solar system when it came across P4, the temporary name for the newly discovered moon.

Two images taken about a week apart by Nasa's Hubble Space Telescope show four moons orbiting the distant, icy dwarf planet Pluto. The green circle in both snapshots marks the newly discovered moon, temporarily dubbed P4, found by Hubble in June. — Reuters pic

With an estimated diameter of 13-34km, P4 was the smallest of Pluto's four moons, the US space agency said in a statement.

Pluto's largest moon, Charon, is 1043km across, and its other moons, Nix and Hydra, are in the range of 32-113km in diameter.

"I find it remarkable that Hubble's cameras enabled us to see such a tiny object so clearly from a distance of more than three billion miles (five billion kilometres)," said Mark Showalter of the SETI Institute in Mountain View, California, who led this observing programme with Hubble.

The observation by Hubble is part of ongoing work to support Nasa's New Horizons mission, scheduled to have a close encounter with Pluto and its moons in 2015.

P4 is located between the orbits of Nix and Hydra, both of which were discovered by Hubble in 2005. Charon was discovered in 1978 at the US Naval Observatory.

All four of Pluto's moons are believed to have formed when Pluto and another planet-sized body collided in the early history of our solar system. Earth's Moon may have formed the same way.

P4 was first seen in a photo taken by Hubble on June 28 and was confirmed in subsequent Hubble pictures taken on July 3 and July 18, NASA said.

In June, Pluto came between a star and Earth, casting a small shadow on Earth's surface that astronomers tracked across the Pacific.

This event, known as an occultation, occurred on June 23, according to scientists at Lowell Observatory in Arizona. Four of them travelled on a modified 747 aircraft that carried a big telescope, which managed to snap images of Pluto and its thin atmosphere.

Learning more about Pluto's tenuous atmosphere was possible because the starlight behind it dimmed in a specific way, which lets astronomers determine atmospheric temperature and density, Lowell Observatory said in a statement.

Pluto cast an extremely long shadow: it has an average distance of 9.495 billion km from the Sun, compared to Earth's distance of 149.7 million km. — Reuters

Auction of teen’s Beatles photos soars over RM1m

NEW YORK, July 22 — A trove of unpublished photographs of The Beatles' first US concerts taken by a Washington teenager in 1964 took in more than US$360,000 (RM1.07 million) at auction, selling for many times their estimates.

Forty-six lots of about 50 pristine black-and-white photographs of the Fab Four that had sat in a box for 45 years totalled US$361,938, including commission at the sale Wednesday night, Christie's said. The collection had been expected to fetch about US$100,000.

Bidders paid anywhere from US$813 to US$68,500 for Mike Mitchell's gelatin silver prints which chronicled The Beatles' appearances in Washington and Baltimore. Every work sold, most all exceeding the pre-sale estimates.

In one striking shot, the band members were photographed at a news conference from behind with each of their heads encircled by a thin halo of light. The 16-inch by 16-inch print fetched the top price and was the last lot of the enthusiastic sale. It had been estimated at US$2,000 to US$3,000.

Christie's had said the photographs were priced conservatively because Mitchell was not a known photographer.

But Christie's director of iconic collections, Cathy Elkies, said their "intimacy and up-close quality" differentiated them from later Beatles photographs.

Calling the sale "an outstanding success," Elkies noted that bidders in the packed salesroom became part of Beatles history, as well as "the excitement that the Beatles still inspire all these years later."

The Beatles performed their first US concert at the Washington Coliseum on February 11, 1964, two days after their legendary debut on "The Ed Sullivan Show."

Mitchell, then 18, was at Union Station when the Beatles arrived and documented the shrieking hysteria of their fans. He also shot the pre-concert news conference and was positioned at the stage for the entire Coliseum show. Months later he documented the Beatles concert at the Baltimore Civic Centre.

Friends encouraged him to put his little-seen photographs up for sale. — Reuters

Piven hints at payback for Ari Gold in ‘Entourage’

Posted: 22 Jul 2011 04:43 AM PDT

Piven said Ari Gold is a role that actors dream of. — Reuters file pic

NEW YORK, July 22 — "Entourage" kicks off its eighth and final season on Sunday, bringing to a close the award-winning HBO comedy drama and its wry look at Hollywood.

Reuters spoke to actor Jeremy Piven as he prepares to bid farewell to his iconic character Ari Gold, the brash, neurotic, take-no-prisoners power agent.

Q: What can fans expect from this final season of "Entourage"?

A: "I think the wife may have had it. I think Ari Gold's methods may be completely unsound and he can be a blow-hard and reckless. And now the things that matter most to him are being taken away. As an actor to play a guy like that who's been brought to his knees — you dream of that as an actor. I couldn't be happier. A lot of stuff that Ari has put out there to the universe is going to come back to haunt him."

Q: And what can Jeremy Piven fans expect in the future? I hope it's not the same.

A: "I have a real shot at impressing my six-year-old niece, Pearl, since the next thing I have is 'Spy Kids 4D'. She is completely underwhelmed by Uncle Jeremy at this point. I play a handful of characters. Some of them are unrecognisable and I had a blast doing them. I think I found my calling and I think it's being a huge ham in front of a green screen with Robert Rodriguez. I can't even tell you how much fun I had.

"And probably the antithesis of that, 'I Meld With You,' which is one of these "bare it all movies," where a group of guys, myself Rob Lowe, Thomas Jane, Christian McKay, get together every year and have this guy's weekend and celebrate our youth. And another film after that with Miley Cyrus."

Q: So your niece has a lot to look forward to.

A: "I would never tell her what I do. She thinks I work for the bus company since she saw me on the bus once. She thinks I have something to do with the bus company — driving them, fixing them, painting them or something."

Q: You've done films, stage and television. Do you have a preference for any medium? Is the preparation different?

A: "I was lucky enough to grow up on the stage in a community that nurtures and celebrates collaboration. I think this kind of training feeds any medium. And it's really fun to jump from one to the other ... There are times during 'Entourage' where I just felt like I was doing a play because the scenes are long ... so I feel like I am getting the best of a couple different areas."

Q: What would you be doing if you weren't an actor?

A: "I would love to be a drummer. I mostly sit in with bands. As an actor, you're always trying to get to that point with the material where it's not green, where it's kind of lived in and trying desperately to get the momentum of the material. I've definitely felt that way with 'Entourage' — like it's a band that's been on the road for a while."

Q: You've worked with so many actors on stage, film and in television. Is there someone you have not worked with yet that you would like to?

A: "I've never worked with Jamie Foxx. Every time I'm around him, I feel like I've known the guy my whole life. He reminds me of guys I grew up with. I'm huge fan of Jeff Bridges and Javier Bardem, so I would love to have the chance to work with them." — Reuters

Democracy, Islam and Malaysia’s ruling party

Posted: 21 Jul 2011 05:26 PM PDT

JULY 22 — I think the ruling party in Malaysia has become a little bit confused about how they should be governing the country in this day and age.

We've all heard it mentioned that they fight for the rights of Malays and Islam . . . so much so that they are beginning to sound like a broken record.

Now why do I say they're confused? Well, they seem to have this thinking whereby Islam rejects democracy when it is really the opposite.

They seem to think that the people should not have a voice and that the majority is what they determine instead of what the people determines.

By denying the people their right to express themselves and to determine how they are governed, as in the case of Bersih 2.0, they are really rejecting the Islamic way.

But it's hard to blame them when many of the Islamic countries around the world reject democracy too and seem to embrace autocratic rule.

They seem to think that if they build tall buildings and expensive highways, then Malaysia would be considered a progressive and modern Islamic country.

But they failed to consider that by rejecting democracy and going for the all-popular autocratic route, they are really moving backwards and not being progressive at all.

Let's go back to the early days of Islam when Prophet Muhammad was leading the Muslims all those hundreds of years ago.

He made it a point not to select a successor and left it to the people to do so. Hence, the first four caliphs; Abu Bakar, Omar, Osman and Ali, were chosen by the people.

It was only after all the fighting and wars fought that autocratic rule came to exist in Islam, with the Indian Mughals and the Baghdad Abbasids leading the way.

Now why did these groups of people advocate autocratic rule? It was because they suffered from the delusion that they were all elitists and had a right to rule.

So I would like to humbly remind the ruling party about the concept of Khilafat in Islam, whereby a state government needs to be ruled by the free choice of the people.

Khilafat also promotes the fundamental rights of all human beings irrespective of gender or creed, the independence of a judiciary, and, in this context, Shura.

Shura means the consultation of the people in a particular society by the people who are in that particular government.

The Quran states, in Surah Al Shura:

"Those who listen to their Lord, and establish regular prayer; who conduct their affairs by mutual consultation; who spend out of what we bestow on them for sustenance, [are praised]."

"The blame is only against those who oppress men with wrong doing and insolently transgress beyond bounds through the land, defying right and justice: for such there will be a penalty grievous."

And also in Surah Al Imran:

"So by mercy from Allah , [O Muhammad], you were lenient with them. And if you had been rude [in speech] and harsh in heart, they would have disbanded from about you. So pardon them and ask forgiveness for them and consult them in the matter. And when you have decided, then rely upon Allah. Indeed, Allah loves those who rely [upon Him]."

As it is so obvious, Islamic governance, at its core, pushes for full, neutral and unbiased participation among the people and the government.

One of the factors that led to the fall of the great Abbasid empire was because their claim to rule was due to the fact that they were "born" to do it and it was hereditary.

Funnily enough, they tried to control their huge empire by relegating authority to local rulers, who ironically, passed on their rule to their sons in a very feudal fashion.

And so their empire crumbled.

So my advice to the ruling party in Malaysia would be to be more Islamic and embrace true democracy.

They may not realise it but what they are doing really will be the tipping point of when their empire will crumble.

Hansel and Gretel 2.0

Posted: 21 Jul 2011 05:12 PM PDT

JULY 22 — Once upon a time, there was a poor woodcutter who lived in a cottage at the edge of a big forest with his two children: a boy named Hansel and a girl called Gretel. He loved them very much, although God knows why he couldn't have given the kids better names.[1]

Sadly, their mother, Chlotichilda,[2] died when they were very young. She accidentally stabbed herself in the neck with a bouquet of freshly sharpened pencils while getting ready to go to the farm one morning. It was not a pretty sight.

The woodcutter later remarried the daughter of a local butcher who was not only ugly, but also absolutely loathed the children. She nagged incessantly that they ate too much, that there was not enough food for anyone else. Times were hard and the economy was suffering from a recession not seen since The Great Depression. Recovery had been tepid at best, and everyone was struggling to put food on the table.

"There are too many mouths to feed! We shall starve if this goes on, so we must get rid of the two brats," she declared one night. "We must take them into the forest and leave them there — far enough so that they won't find their way back."

The woodcutter initially protested, but he didn't want to risk sleeping on the couch for an extended period. With the threat of a prolonged sex embargo looming large over his head, he reluctantly agreed.

The children had heard them talking, and Gretel began to cry.

"Be strong, Gretel," said Hansel calmly. "Crying can be perceived as weak, and this doesn't augur well for the government's policy to ensure that women make up at least 30 per cent of the board of public listed companies in this country," he added.

"I'll think of something. I'm a man. By definition, I'm a problem solver and I fix things. Haven't you read the book 'Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus'?" added Hansel.

Actually Hansel had no clue what to do but he figured it was important that he appeared in control. Otherwise, Gretel would have kept crying and that would have been very annoying.

Hansel finally came up with an idea. He slipped quietly out of the back door, filled his pockets with little white pebbles, and went to bed.

The next morning, the whole family set out into the forest to cut wood. As their stepmother led them deeper and deeper into the forest, Hansel secretly dropped the white pebbles, one by one as he went.

They finally stopped for a spot of R&R, and the stepmother asked Hansel and Gretel to wait there while she and their father went to cut some wood. She promised to fetch them when they were ready to leave.

The children waited and waited until it got dark, and it dawned upon them that they had been abandoned.

"They've left us!" sobbed Gretel, stating the obvious. "And I am so cold and hungry."

"Don't worry, Gretel," said Hansel. "Come along, let's find the way home."

Ever the gentleman and protective brother, Hansel wrapped his coat around Gretel's shoulders as they set out for home. Soon it grew too dark to see, but the moon — rather conveniently — came out from behind the clouds. Suddenly, the children saw something glinting on the ground.

Gretel — who by this time had started hallucinating — initially thought that it was a bunch of VVS1, D-colour diamonds from Antwerp, but Hansel instantly knew that they were the pebbles that he had dropped on the way into the forest.

They followed the path and traced their way back home. The woodcutter was ecstatic — not to mention a little bit sheepish – to see his children safely home again. The stepmother was properly flummoxed and, naturally, not amused.

Weeks passed and times grew even harder as a result of a double dip economic recession, which was further exacerbated by the strengthening euro which made export less competitive. Worse, the nation descended into chaos and anarchy as demonstrators3 took to the streets. The government was forced to work hard to convince investors that the country still had much to offer.

It got to a point where the family was only left with half a loaf of bread, half a Kitkat, a bottle of Hillsburg non-alcoholic malt drink.[4] The stepmother told the husband in no uncertain terms that his time he must take the children into the forest and make sure they never come back.

The woodcutter tried to protest again, but he was swiftly reminded of the impending sex embargo. Emotional blackmail is a powerful thing, you see,[5] and the poor sod was sent to bed without his supper.

The children heard everything but this time Hansel could not find any white pebbles. Wah, what a predicament lah!

Early the next morning, their stepmother gave the children each a slice of bread, and once again led them into the forest. As Hansel had no pebbles, he had to drop his slice of bread, crumb by crumb, to mark the route.

In the very depths of the forest, the stepmother once again told the children to wait until she came to fetch them, and predictably, once again she did not return.

Anxious to get home before it grew too dark, Hansel and Gretel set out to find the breadcrumbs that would show them the way back home. Much to their shock and consternation, they couldn't find any because the angry birds[6] of the forest had eaten them all!

"Don't worry," said Hansel with the firm conviction of a non-governable organisation (NGO) leader, although he himself was petrified of the frightening shadows in the darkness. "We'll soon find the way."

But they stumbled all night and of course they couldn't find a way. Being a guy, Hansel refused to ask for directions even though they were clearly lost. Google Maps and the GPS were not yet invented, so the situation was pretty hopeless.

The two children huddled together all night for warmth and when dawn broke, they started to wander about the forest until they chanced upon a strange cottage.

Much to their delight, they discovered that the house was entirely made of gingerbread, cakes, barley sugar, milk chocolate and all that fattening stuff. Starving but delighted, the children began to break lumps of the house wall and gobbled them whole, but not before reciting the doa makan.

Hansel kept eating the roof, while Gretel thought the windowpanes were particularly tasty. Obviously this was not very healthy, as it will encourage kids to get high on sugar and, over time, become obese.

More importantly, breaking off pieces of the cottage will affect its structural integrity as it is no longer faithful to the blueprint as designed and computed by a competent civil or structural engineer.

"Well, well, well! Having an awfully grand feast, aren't we?" croaked an old woman who suddenly appeared from the doorway. "You two look famished. Come inside and I'll cook you a proper meal."

Soon, Hansel and Gretel were tucking into the best meal they had eaten for a long time.[7] After a hefty dinner and scrumptious desserts, a mighty belch-fest ensued,[8] and the children — very full and tired — soon crashed in bed and snored the night away.

Now, dear readers, you've probably realised[9] that this old woman was, in fact, a very evil witch whose modus operandi revolved around luring children to visit her delicious house, fattening them up, and cooking them in the oven.

Sure enough, the next morning she seized Hansel and locked him in a cage, while Gretel was forced to do all the housework.

"We must fatten the boy up," she cackled.[10] Thereafter, she cooked big meals for both children every day, and every night she told Hansel to poke his finger out of the cage to see how fat he was getting.

Each time, Hansel poked a chicken bone out of the cage instead, and the very short-sighted witch thought he wasn't getting any fatter. This was pre-contact lenses and pre-LASIK,[11] you understand.

The witch was baffled why Hansel didn't get fat despite all the food, and after a while, she lost all patience and decided to eat him anyway.

"Fat or thin, I shall cook him now! Stoke up the oven, my dear," she commanded Gretel.[12]

"I don't know how to," said Gretel. "I mean, it's not like this oven comes with an instruction manual. Can you show me then?"

"It's easy, you daft git," snapped the witch. "Like this!"

The wicked old woman turned so abruptly, and in a classic, slapstick Harold Lloyd[13] moment, she tripped and lost her balance, and fell headlong into the flames.[14]

Gretel promptly opened Hansel's cage and he leapt out and embraced his sister. They went outside, ate pieces of the house a bit more, and stuffed some into their pockets before continuing on their way.

They walked through the forest until it was too dark to see between the trees. Once again, they were hopelessly lost. They were about to give up hope when the moon rose above the clouds and something wonderful happened.

"Look!" whispered Gretel, pointing to the ground in front of her, where something glinted in the moonlight.

"It's one of my pebbles!" cried Hansel. "And look — there's another!"

Joyfully, they began to run, following the trail of pebbles. They ran and they ran past Puduraya, Menara Maybank, Central Market, Dataran Merdeka, Stesen KTM and Masjid Negara until, at long last, they reached Stadium Merdeka. I mean, until they saw their home beyond the trees and their dear father.

How they rejoiced and hugged each other! The woodcutter had never forgiven himself for abandoning his children in the forest, and his evil wife had left him soon after for a Gouda cheese maker from Eindhoven. In fact, since he had left the children in the forest, he had not had a single happy hour.[15]

Now that his children have returned, he worked even harder than before and life began to get better. The local economy improved soon after, thanks to the stimulus package provided by the government and a better investment climate that jumpstarted many industries. Hansel and Gretel also helped out by starting a cupcakes business, and they soon had some money to invest in unit trusts, old and Tabung Haji, and they didn't have to rely solely on EPF.

With all their troubles over, Hansel and Gretel and their father were happy at last, and I guess this is a nice way to end this ridiculous fairy tale.

7 Although to be fair, the kids were poor and didn't always have much to eat. So that was not very hard to top, really.

8 Kids, this is not very polite. Don't forget to say "Excuse me" when this happens.

9 Unless you're really, really silly.

Isu Teoh: Tsu Koon harap tindakan tegas atas tiga pegawai SPRM

Posted: 22 Jul 2011 02:56 AM PDT

Bersih 2.0: Suhakam mula kumpul bukti tindakan keras pihak berkuasa

Posted: 22 Jul 2011 01:31 AM PDT
