Leeds part company with manager McDermott

Leeds United have parted company with manager Brian McDermott (pic) by mutual consent as new Italian owner Massimo Cellino begins to restructure the cash-strapped English second-tier club.

The businessman, who sold Italian club Cagliari earlier this week, bought a 75% stake in Leeds in April after the former English champions made losses of 9.5 million pounds (RM50.7 million) in the 2012-13 season.

"He (Brian) has been a gentleman to deal with in our discussions and has been very understanding of my wish to implement a new structure," Cellino said in a statement on the club's official website (www.leedunited.com).

McDermott added: "...it is clear Massimo wishes to implement a new structure and feels he will work more successfully for Leeds with a coach rather than a manager.

"I respect that Massimo must be fully supported in putting together his vision for the club so he can bring us the success we all want."

British media reported in January that McDermott had been sacked, but he was told the following day he would remain as manager.

Leeds struggled to a 15th-place finish in the Championship last season.

"Brian is a great manager and a great guy. He has been unfortunate to work in such difficult circumstances," added Cellino.

"I did not fully understand the mess he had to work in, and the broken promises he had to deal with, until I have got involved trying to turn Leeds around." – Reuters, May 31, 2014.

Sturridge goal unlocked game, says England boss Hodgson

England's Daniel Sturridge (second left) celebrates scoring a goal with teammates during their international friendly football match against Peru at Wembley Stadium in London yesterday. – Reuters pic, May 31, 2014. England manager Roy Hodgson praised Daniel Sturridge for the striker's sensational goal that set England on their way to a comfortable 3-0 win over Peru in a World Cup warm-up yesterday.

On a night when England said adieus to an optimistic Wembley crowd, Hodgson's men, operating a 4-2-3-1 formation, looked rusty in the opening period until Sturridge blew away some of the cobwebs with a superb left-footed strike on 32 minutes.

Everton left back Leighton Baines set up defenders Gary Cahill and Phil Jagielka to score from two devilish second half corners as England eased to victory against a Peru side that failed to qualify for the tournament in Brazil.

"It didn't look like it was going to be that comfortable in the first half when they got men behind the ball and defended well," Hodgson told reporters.

"But as soon as Daniel came up with that fantastic goal, I don't think the game was in great doubt.

"It was really good tonight that Daniel could score that goal and this one was particularly important because it unlocked the game."

Despite relying on two set pieces to down sorry-looking Peru, Hodgson said he was happy with his striking options and is yet to decide on the team that will face the Italy in England's Group D opener in Manaus on June 14.

"I've said all along I think I've got a good squad of players here," said the former Liverpool manager, whose side also meet Uruguay and Costa Rica in the group stage.

"I think there are many talented players, many exciting players.

"I am very satisfied with the options I've got in my strike force. I have got two weeks of training now to decide the line up for the team that will play Italy."

Hodgson, who will confirm his final 23-man squad on Monday before England travel to Miami to play friendlies against fellow World Cup qualifiers Ecuador and Honduras, believes Peru provided the perfect warm-up for what is to come in Brazil.

"Peru gave me exactly the type of test I wanted tonight," he said. "If we do well in Brazil then many games will be of this nature because teams, not just from South America, are getting men behind the ball and make it hard for you to find a clear way through.

"If you are not careful they will hit you on the counter-attack and abuse the fact that you are taking the initiative in the game." – Reuters, May 31, 2014.

Shaking Shakespeare: Richard III was no hunchback after all

But the bard seems to have missed the mark, scientists said yesterday. Their comprehensive analysis of the king's remains, including a 3-D reconstruction of his spine, confirmed that Richard was not really a hunchback but instead suffered from scoliosis, a sideways curvature of the spine.

Scientists spotted the spinal abnormality that looked like scoliosis when Richard's skeleton – replete with a cleaved skull – was dug up in the English city of Leicester in 2012 in one of the most important archaeological finds in recent English history.

Researchers who created a plastic 3-D model of the slain king's spine based on scans of the bones provided the first complete account of Richard's condition in a study published in the Lancet medical journal.

"It's pretty typical idiopathic adolescent-onset scoliosis," University of Leicester forensic radiologist Bruno Morgan said.

Richard's spine had a pronounced rightward curve of between 65 and 85 degrees and some twisting that yielded a spiral shape. Such a person today probably would be offered surgery to address it, the researchers said.

His right shoulder was higher than his left, and his torso relatively short compared to his limbs, they added.

"Shakespeare was right that he did have a spinal deformity. He was wrong with the kind of deformity that he had. He wasn't a hunchback," University of Cambridge biological anthropologist Piers Mitchell said.

"Shakespeare also said that he had a withered arm and a limp. But looking at the bones, everything is very symmetrical. There are no signs of a withered arm. And both legs are perfectly well formed. There is no sign of him having a limp," Mitchell added.

Richard was killed at age 32 as he fought to keep his crown at the Battle of Bosworth Field in 1485. His death ended the Plantagenet dynasty and ushered in the Tudors under Henry VII.

"On the one hand, we want to say, 'This is nowhere near as bad as Shakespeare said it was'. But we don't want to trivialise somebody who has got a 70 degree scoliosis because they are going to have pain and discomfort," Morgan said.

"But there is no doubt that Richard III could put on a suit of armor and go to battle and fight," Morgan added.

In "Richard III", Shakespeare cast him as a tyrant who murdered two princes in the Tower of London and died in battle crying out: "A horse! A horse! My kingdom for a horse!" Richard's supporters argue his reputation was tarnished intentionally to cement Tudor rule.

While Shakespeare provides Richard's best known description, it came more than a century after the king died. "It was colourful, but Shakespeare was basically writing a play to entertain people," Mitchell added. – Reuters, May 30, 2014.

The festival will be ongoing until the 14 September. – Pic courtey of Sime Darby, May 30, 2014. The Yayasan Sime Darby Arts Festival, was launched by Yayasan Sime Darby chairman Tun Musa Hitam in klpac yesterday. The festival will be ongoing until the 14 September. – Pic courtey of Sime Darby, May 30, 2014.Lovers of the arts and heritage will be in for a royal treat from now until September with the launching of the inaugural Yayasan Sime Darby Arts Festival.

The Yayasan Sime Darby Arts Festival, taglined "A Malaysian Community Project" is produced in collaboration with The Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (klpac) and will feature Malaysia's varied traditional and contemporary arts. Specially tailored pre-festival activities for all age groups will also be held in the run-up to the two-day finale taking place on the 13th and 14th of September.

Yayasan Sime Darby chairman Tun Musa Hitam said the celebrations, featuring the rich and traditional heritage from all over Malaysia will be the first ever arts festival organised by the foundation.

Speaking after the launching of the Yayasan Sime Darby Arts Festival at klpac, he said: "The Yayasan Sime Darby Arts Festival is going to provide the public with the rare opportunity to immerse themselves in the very best of our traditional and contemporary arts, and cultural heritage from around the country."

"We want this event to be a catalyst to set the bar high for the arts scene in Malaysia. Though we are rich in our diversity, tradition, arts and heritage, not much attention is paid to promote this segment. We hope that through the Yayasan Sime Darby Arts Festival, we can invoke the interest and support of the masses and give recognition to those who put their hearts and souls into the arts," he added.

The launching ceremony was held in klpac, which will also be the venue for most of the events including the two-day finale. The event was also graced by Sime Darby Chairman Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman.

From now until September, the public will be encouraged to participate and be players, protagonists and partners instead of being mere passive spectators.

"We want this festival to be significant and reflect the undying perseverance and talents of our fellow Malaysians to conserve our rich history and heritage while developing new modes of expressions for the current times and generation," said Tun Musa.

A roll out of several community projects drawing on the talents of everyday Malaysians is also on the card. This will include a painting competition for schoolchildren in and around the Sime Darby Plantation estates, a photography competition for university students, and a drum painting and mask making project.

The drum painting project will culminate with a drums parade which will be held during the last two days of the festival in September. Other activities include a series of theatre workshops for trainee teachers and a dance project for senior citizens that will revolve around Sime Darby's five pillars of support – Education, Environment, Community & Health, Youth & Sports and Arts & Culture.

Meanwhile, the last two days of the festival will feature an exciting array of performances, workshops and activities across all genres featuring hundreds of artistes. One of the key highlights will be a traditional showcase specially curated by Pusaka, the cultural centre for Malaysia.

This showcase will bring together the best of what Malaysia has to offer on the traditional front from each state and render a rare opportunity to watch authentic and captivating performances such as the Kuda Kepang from Johor, Boria from Penang, Wayang Kulit from Kelantan and the Sumazau dance from Sabah, to name a few.

Datuk Faridah Merican, klpac's Executive Producer, said: "It is an unprecedented move for a corporate foundation like Yayasan Sime Darby to initiate and fully fund an event of this kind and scale. Nowhere else will you be able to experience the breadth and depth of the arts and this is what excites us. The engagements from now until September holds much promise and the best part of it all, it is 100% accessible to everyone, with no admission fee."

Callen Tham, the Yayasan Sime Darby Arts Festival Director, added, "Imagine, you can watch a rock band on the main stage, head over to the experimental stage to catch an avant-garde dance piece, then stroll out to catch a 100% authentic traditional performance on the Kampung House not before taking in some other cool installations and acts along the way. And all of this will be totally free of charge, thanks to Yayasan Sime Darby."

This festival is an illustration of our commitment towards developing the arts scene in Malaysia. The festival will be in sync with the foundation's objective to invigorate the vibrancy of Malaysia's multi-cultural society that encourages traditional heritage preservation. Yayasan Sime Darby believes that art is all about crossing boundaries and building cultural social connections, and the Yayasan Sime Darby Arts Festival is expected to be a true testament of this belief.

Arts and culture, one of the pillars of Yayasan Sime Darby's philanthropy, has seen support for a wide variety of arts organisations and initiatives, including klpac and the National Dance Tour by the Aswara Dance Company.

Other sponsorships include productions like the 11th JB Arts Festival, the 8th Kota Kinabalu Jazz Festival, Supermokh The Musical and Tropfest South East Asia 2015. Yayasan Sime Darby  encourages the preservation of historical heritage through its support for the revival of The Royal Press, one of the oldest letterpress printing companies in the world which will soon be turned into the nation's first of its kind living museum. – May 30, 2014.

John Lennon’s manuscripts, drawings to be sold at auction

Eighty nine lots, ranging in price from US$500 (about RM1,600) to US$70,000, produced for the 1964 book "In His Own Write" and "A Spaniard in the Works", published in 1965, will go under the hammer.

The event coincides with the 50th anniversary of the Beatles' first appearance in America on the Ed Sullivan show.

"This is the most substantial collection of original artwork and manuscript and typescript material by John Lennon that has ever come up for auction," said Gabriel Heaton, a specialist in the book and manuscript department of Sotheby's in London.

"It is one of the largest bodies of non-musical work he ever produced," Heaton said in a telephone interview. Lennon was 40 when he was shot in 1980 in the courtyard of his New York home.

The collection, which is expected to bring a total of US$850,000 to US$1.8 million, is on view to the public at Sotheby's ahead of the June 4 sale.

Other works featured in the auction include an introduction Paul McCartney wrote for "In His Own Write" and a sketch of a guitar player in front of a music stand.

"These items are produced right at the height of Beatlemania," said Heaton, adding that the text for the first book was submitted before The Beatles trip to America and published on their return to England.

Heaton described the manuscripts as short pieces, some in verse and some in prose, that are comic and written in a strange language of puns and word play.

"No word is ever quite what it seemed," he explained. "It is heavily influenced by the nonsense tradition of English literature."

Texts include Lennon giving his own brief biography and McCartney remembering the first meeting with Lennon.

"You've got several pieces that are quite revealing, in an indirect way, of his state of mind at the time, which is not as quite straightforwardly happy as you might expect of a young man who has just conquered the world, pretty much," said Heaton about Lennon.

The illustrations are distinctive, amusing and sometimes powerful line drawings by Lennon, who in addition to his musical talents was a trained artist. Some of the sketches accompany the verse and others are stand-alone art works.

"It is a sale with a large number of wonderful pieces," said Heaton. "This is an unusual chance to acquire significant and substantial manuscript material by one of the great creative forces of the post-war period."

The collection is being sold by Lennon's British publisher Tom Maschler, who persuaded him to write the books. – Reuters, May 30, 2014.

All work, all play: How hours spent on games are investments in future careers

Posted: 29 May 2014 10:15 PM PDT

May 30, 2014

Gone are the days when video games were considered as wasted hours of entertainment. In this digital era, everything seems to be a "game" isn't it? Well it's simple enough to imagine the future of an industry, upon which each one of us is getting dependent day by day. When we talk about public's interest on a certain product or a service, we are actually talking about the beginning of a successful career in the field of creating that particular product or a service.

So what exactly are these gaming students thinking during their school lives? Honestly, they simply can't stop imagining what it's going to be like if they were given a chance to work behind the exciting scenes of their imaginative gaming world.

We perceive gamers as fun lovers, sitting on their couches and playing without considering their career seriously. But the reality is that there are thousands of people who do have some really exciting and high income jobs in the gaming industry. So if you are a gamer, and you are reading this article you would understand how it feels when our parents ask us do something "serious" in life. Let's answer their worries through some facts.

Opportunities coming your way

This goes far beyond just creating or testing games. These professionals are needed to create games for various devices such as computers, mobile devices, handheld devices, social media networks such as Facebook and several traditional gaming platforms.

Similarly, for those who are in the business of selling and promoting these games, it may require general business administration or marketing expertise. There are numerous job opportunities and positions in the gaming industry.

"It's been 10 years that we've been in this robust games industry catering to the various needs of gamers from all over the world through our online digital games store. Our growth through the years would not be possible without our dedicated team whom mostly are a bunch of gaming enthusiasts themselves. A career in the games industry whether service providers or game publishing is rewarding, varied and most of all, entertaining." says Leonard Chee, Chief Executive Officer at OffGamers.com

An independent survey, which analyses the global salary trends in the gaming industry, indicates that gamers earn almost the same or more as any other common industry.

Some degrees offered to help you pursue a career in gaming

There are different courses and professional degrees which can definitely help students choose a career which is of their interest. These degrees can get you to work for some of the world's most famous and biggest gaming companies.

The degrees which would allow you to pursue a career in this industry are:

 1. Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Games Design

2. BSc (Hons) In Computer Games Development

3. Master of Science (Computer Science) - Game Development by Research

4. Bachelor of Science (Hons) Electronic Games and Interactive Media

5. Bachelor of Computer Science (Hons) in Interactive Software Technology

6. Bachelor of Information Technology (Game Technology)

7. Bachelor in Games Design and Animation (Hons)

8. Bachelor of Game Development - Game Art (Visuals)

9. Bio-Feedback Computer Games for Emotional Intelligence

10. Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Computer Gaming and Animation Technology

Indeed, it is a professional degree that really helps

Experts have always believed in the fact that your education and training will add more value to your skills and passion. Not only that, with the enormous demands in the gaming production values, the industry is looking for acquiring creative, talented and qualified people. Let's have a look at some of the areas which require professionals with specialized degrees:

Art and Animations

Game Artists create the images – all the objects, buildings, landscapes and characters – which make up the game world. Animators define and create their movement. The majority of computer games are now developed using real-time 3D graphics and animation.

Artists and Animators working in computer games development are usually trained or experienced in one of the major 3D modelling and animation packages, such as 3DStudioMax or Maya.

Game Artists work at many different levels in a games development studio. Job roles are often combined, and include concept artists, environment modellers, object and vehicle modellers, character modellers, animators, and texture artists. A Lead Artist or Art Director takes overall responsibility.

Programming and coding

From the outside, this seems the most mysterious of all the game development areas. It is also the heart of the process, as the programming team is responsible for creating the code which makes the game actually work.

There are numerous sub-disciplines within the programming department, including artificial intelligence or AI, physics, graphics rendering engine development, character control, gameplay programming and middleware tools development.

All these are usually overseen by a lead programmer who is also responsible for the technical specification of the game and for strategically managing the code development process. Programmers must be able to work in a team and have problem-solving skills, in addition to programming ability.

Sound and music

Sound design and audio engineering are increasingly important areas within the games development process. Depending on the size of the company, the audio department might consist of one or two people who are responsible for creating and producing music, sound effects, recording dialogue, and often supervising voice performance.

Game tester

There are a number of other roles within a games development company, but perhaps the most important is quality assurance or QA. This discipline includes the role of tester, which is one of the most common entry points into the games industry for first time job seekers. Testing is a highly disciplined role as it involves identifying and describing bugs and faults in games, builds and communicating these in a clear and unambiguous way.

Production management and publishing

Production management within games development is usually split between the developer and publisher. The development schedule is the responsibility of the producer or project manager within the games development team, whilst the external producer, based with the games publisher, will be more involved in marketing and selling the game and ensuring it stays true to the original concepts. Whilst sometimes the external producer might have more creative input than a project manager, both are responsible for budgets, schedules, milestones, and reports.

Retail management

These are the type of roles that are to be found in any organisation and are essential to its successful running, eg. marketing, PR, human resources, administration, and IT support.

A few additional skills can add more value

You must also know how to use Microsoft Word, Excel and Project – not as a casual user but deeply trained on these products. Since making a game is a team effort your must be well versed in English too.

Some secrets to succeed in the gaming industry

1. Once you decide on a specific discipline, get a degree and training closest to that area of the gaming industry.

2. Don't forget to also develop a demo as a work sample, showing your skills and abilities in the path you would like to choose. An innovative three minutes demo can definitely set you apart.

3. Create a hit list of target game companies in the segment of industry you have interest in.

4. Networking, networking, and a lot of networking! It is certainly very crucial to start up any career. Focus on meeting people working at your target company.

5. Keep yourself updated on current gaming industry issues and trends.

6. Develop a one minute "sales" pitch about yourself.

7. Build a database of game industry professionals and manage it.

8. Create a resume that is accomplishment-oriented and customized per game company you approach.

9. Last but not least, don't give up!

Bangladeshi mums benefit from improved health communication

For young women likely to give birth at home, new resources are being made available thanks to MAMA. – AFP/Relaxnews pic, May 30, 2014.Things are changing in Bangladesh, as Mobile Alliance for Maternal Action (MAMA) makes vital healthcare information available to more and more mothers.

Known for high per capita poverty rates and a devastating shortage of doctors, infant mortality is high in Bangladesh, where over five thousand mothers lost their lives due to avoidable complications of pregnancy and childbirth last year.

Having subscribed half a million mothers and counting, MAMA transmits bi-weekly messages via voicemail or SMS texting depending on the subscriber's preferences and to accommodate a varying degree of literacy. The service is called Aponjon, which means "the trusted one" in Hindi.

Despite reaching out to an already-high number of subscribers, efforts are underway to increase circulation, notable of which is making the messages available in local dialects.

Technology developers are looking into creating a high-end app in hopes that it could soon cross-subsidise basic Aponjon service for the poorest women and their families.

The increase of mobile phone use in the poorest countries is a growing phenomenon. One billion women in low and middle income countries own mobile phones.

Information relayed in the messages could pertain to anything from nutrition, to recognising and treating a range of illnesses. The messages are often in theatre-format, with actors posing as mothers, pregnant women, their doctors and partners.

Subscribers say it's working.

Asha Rani said the messages gave her more confidence in caring for her second child, not to mention information she wishes she'd been able to access when the first one came along.

"I didn't know how to take care of him or what to feed him. (He) got sick frequently and I had to take him to the doctor or hospital all the time. Now everyone in my family takes care of my child by following the messages," she says.

Each message currently costs two taka, approximately two and a half cents. With the help of partners Johnson & Johnson Worldwide Corporate Contributions, Humanitarian aid organisation Usaid, and communications provider Dnet, MAMA aims to provide the service free of charge for the poorest subscribers, approximately 20% of the network.

"Mobile phones and mobile health initiatives have the potential to be the great equaliser in countries like Bangladesh, where over 80% of households have a mobile phone. Dnet and the MAMA partners have done a terrific job of turning an innovative concept into a successful reality. Aponjon is saving lives. Usaid is a proud partner in this Alliance, and we look forward to watching Aponjon continue to provide valuable information and services to Bangladeshi families across the country," says Allyson P. Bear, Health Systems Strengthening Team Leader, Usaid.

Despite project leaders' satisfaction, some say this is just beginning. Efforts are underway to increase circulation, notable of which is making the messages available in local dialects.

Launched on Mother's Day 2011 by former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, MAMA concentrates its efforts on improving health communications in areas with high rates of infant mortality and high mobile phone usage.

MAMA is at the helm of similar projects in South Africa and India. – AFP/Relaxnews, May 30, 2014.

If a pig drank from a river…

Posted: 29 May 2014 04:35 PM PDT

May 30, 2014

Zan Azlee is a documentary filmmaker, journalist, writer, New Media practitioner and lecturer. He runs Fat Bidin Media www.fatbidin.com

Once upon a midnight dreary, a cute pinky-pie pig was taking a walk along a beautiful river that flowed through a beautiful tropical rain forest.

It was a nice night. Crickets were creaking, frogs were croaking, stars were shining, leaves were ruffling and the moonlight was casting beautiful pale blue shadows everywhere.

The cute pinky pie pig had recently eaten dinner. It was an over-ripe papaya that had fallen to the ground. It was just sweet and juicy enough for his liking.

With his plump and round belly now full, he had decided to take a stroll just to enjoy the night and also burn off a little bit of the calories he had consumed.

Every now and then, he would push his snout towards the ground as he took whiffs of the pleasant scents of the forest's wildflowers that were growing all along the river bank.

The cute pinky pie pig had been walking without a care in the world for about 45 minutes when he started feeling a little bit tired. He plonked his round behind down by a tree stump and took a short rest. Soon, the gurgling of the river was too tempting and he lowered his mouth for a satisfying drink.

About 20 kilometres away, the river eventually turned in to a huge delta. That delta was the opening to a beautiful beach with fine white sand that felt like powder to the feet.

Now, that beach is actually a large ocean of which body of water washed to the shore of several continents, some very populated and some just so remote.

On the remotest of continents, there was a small village that had a group of isolated people who were officially practicing Muslims but had no contact with the rest of the Muslim world.

This village was deep in the heart of the mainland and was not near any seaside or beach. But, also being a tropical island, rainfall was quite high. As we all know, rain happens when water on the surface of the earth (could be a lake, river, stream or ocean) evaporates into the air and condenses before falling down as rain.

So, one fine weekend, the villagers were having a big wedding party, when it started to drizzle. Very quickly, that drizzle turned into a huge thunderstorm. Everyone ran as fast as they could for cover into their homes and under any shelter they could find. But they got wet anyway.

The next day, the father of the bride from the wedding felt a little icky. He couldn't explain the feeling. He didn't feel sick and physically, he was fine. He just felt really icky.

He told his wife who then told the rest of the family. The whole family started feeling icky. Then news spread and the whole village started feeling icky.

The village medicine man suddenly had a vision. With the superpowers bestowed upon him, he could see that several specks of pig saliva was in the rain water.

The entire village became hysterical. Some were crying, some were shouting, some were screaming, some were rolling on the ground. They were all definitely feeling very icky.

The village elders then sat down in a circle in the middle of the village discussing what they should do. It was quite a heated discussion, but they finally came to a conclusion.

Because all the villagers' skin had come into contact with the rainwater, and because the skin is a porous organ, the specks of pig saliva had definitely entered everyone's blood system.

The only way, according to the village elders, was to cleanse the blood from everyone's bodies. And the most effective method was to drain their blood out.

So they gathered everyone in the village, the women, children, elderly, into the middle of the village where they had their discussion.

The village medicine man took out a large crate filled with knives and handed them to the villagers. He instructed them to slit themselves at every major blood vessel point on the bodies.

Everyone slowly and quietly started cutting themselves. Their tainted blood started to flow everywhere on the ground, mixing with the dirt and turning into mud.

In a couple of hours being weak and weary, every villager eventually bled to death.

They may be dead, but at least they managed to cleanse their body from the ickyness. – May 30, 2014.

Posted: 30 May 2014 04:10 AM PDT

May 30, 2014

– Bernama, 30 Mei, 2014.

WWF-Malaysia to host sustainable seafood festival in June

Malaysians will have a chance to celebrate their love for seafood while protecting the health of our ocean at the first regional Sustainable Seafood Festival (SSF) from 7 to 8 June 2014 at The Intermark, Kuala Lumpur.

The Save Our Seafood (S.O.S) Campaign by WWF-Malaysia in partnership with the Marine Stewardship Council will mark the inaugural celebration also to be held in Japan, Indonesia and Singapore as part of WWF's ongoing initiative to raise awareness on the global decline of fish stocks and to collaborate with the government, businesses and local communities towards achieving sustainable fisheries management.

"It is important that we understand how our seafood choices impact the ocean. There is an urgent need to expand the sustainable seafood movement from how a consumer makes an ocean-friendly decision when shopping and dining to sustainable seafood sourcing by business and industry players,"  said WWF-Malaysia's Executive Director/CEO, Datuk Dr Dionysius Sharma.

Dr. Sharma added that the sustainable seafood journey is a collective one that can potentially yield a transformative initiative that can ensure that we continue to enjoy local seafood in the future.

"Malaysians are the biggest consumers of seafood in Southeast Asia and the average Malaysian consumes about 52kg of seafood per year. The SSF hopes to drive the message home on the role all of us can play in maintaining the health of our marine resources.

Four hotels have also come on board as SSF partners in supporting Marine Stewardship Council and Aquaculture Stewardship Council-certified products through a Sustainable Seafood Menu promotion at their respective outlets."

Themed 'Hooked on Sustainable Seafood for a Healthy Ocean', the festival is held in conjunction with World Oceans Day and the Coral Triangle Day and will feature live cooking demonstrations, exhibitions, a seafood mascot design competition, an Art Jam and other exciting activities for members of the public.
