Three nutrients for better sleep

Posted: 27 Jul 2013 05:45 PM PDT

July 28, 2013

If you have difficulty getting quality zzzs, it could be linked to a surprising reason: vitamin or mineral deficiencies.

This week health website Livescience reported on three common sleep problems and the three nutrients that may cure what ails you.

1. Can't get to sleep: Studies have shown that insomnia is one of the symptoms of magnesium deficiency. Good natural sources are dark leafy greens, pumpkin seeds, beans and lentils.

2. Difficulty staying asleep: This could be linked to potassium, Livescience reports. Studies have shown that potassium supplements may boost sleeping through the night, but good food sources are beans, leafy greens, avocados, baked potatoes, and to a lesser degree, bananas.

3. Feeling tired during the day: While this could be the result of many factors, namely stress, research has found "a strong correlation" between excessive drowsiness during the day and vitamin D deficiency, according to a study published last year in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine. Good vitamin D sources: the sun's rays, but you can find the mineral in food sources such as swordfish, salmon, tuna, and fortified dairy products. – AFP/Relaxnews, July 28, 2013.

Pietersen in as England look to wrap up Ashes

Posted: 28 Jul 2013 02:56 AM PDT

July 28, 2013
Latest Update: July 29, 2013 01:56 am

Kevin Pietersen was included in a 14-man squad for next week's third Ashes Test against Australia at Old Trafford despite concerns over his calf injury, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) announced Sunday.

Star batsman Pietersen will be given time to prove his fitness for the match, which starts at the Manchester venue on Thursday, with Nottinghamshire's James Taylor added to the squad as cover.

England have also altered their bowling options by bringing in Monty Panesar as a second spinner and recalling fast bowler Chris Tremlett in place of seamers Steven Finn and Graham Onions.

Pietersen, who has been sidelined for much of this year, suffered his latest fitness setback in England's crushing 347-run second Test win at Lord's last week and could not field in the second innings.

Taylor always looked the most likely candidate to be called up as cover after the ECB sought special dispensation for the diminutive batsman to guest for Sussex in their ongoing tour match against Australia at Hove.

The 23-year-old Taylor responded by making an unbeaten 64 on Saturday's second day of three.

Taylor played two Tests against South Africa last year but didn't make the England squad for the tours of India and New Zealand, falling behind the likes of Nick Compton and Joe Root in the England pecking order.

However, he has been in good first-class form this season, scoring 824 runs in 15 County Championship appearances, including an unbeaten double century against Sussex in June.

"Kevin Pietersen is continuing his recovery from a calf strain and he will be assessed by the medical team closer to the start of the Test and we have therefore included an extra batsman in James Taylor who has been in good form for Nottinghamshire this season," said England national selector Geoff Miller in a statement announcing the squad.

Meanwhile left-armer Panesar has been included in the squad alongside off-break bowler Graeme Swann on account of Old Trafford's reputation for providing spin-friendly pitches which has endured despite the ground not having staged a Test for three years because of extensive redevelopment.

Sussex bowler Panesar last played a home Test four years ago when he held out with the bat to help guide England to a draw in the 2009 Ashes opener at Cardiff but has featured nine times abroad in recent years.

Tremlett, who starred in England's 3-1 Ashes series win in Australia in 2010/11 has not played a Test for 18 months, with injuries checking his progress. But the giant paceman has impressed for Surrey this season.

Finn played in England's narrow 14-run first Test win at Trent Bridge but was dropped for the second Test at Lord's, with all-rounder Tim Bresnan selected in his place. Durham fast-medium bowler Onions was in the squad for the first two Tests but did not play in either match.

Victory at Old Trafford would see England, currently 2-0 up with three to play, clinch the series and retain the Ashes.

However, a cautious Miller said: "The players worked hard at Trent Bridge and Lord's to get into a very good position in this Ashes but will be fully aware that there is still a great deal of cricket left in the series." - AFP, July 28, 2013

Brawling Bodin handed two-year ban

Posted: 28 Jul 2013 01:53 AM PDT

July 28, 2013

Bodin Issara was banned for two years by the Badminton Association of Thailand (BAT) for physical assault after his ugly on-court brawl with former doubles partner Maneepong Jongjit during the final of the Canada Open last week.

The BAT also handed Maneepong a three-month ban for provocation after lengthy deliberations last night in Bangkok. The duo could face further penalties with an investigation by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) still ongoing.

"Everything we have done in 60 years collapsed just because of one person. In my six decades in this sport, I haven't seen a more violent case than this," BAT president Charoen Wattanasin was quoted as saying by Thai media today.

"I have been requested to be gentle in the measures but this is not about my feelings or others' feelings. It's a matter of the country's image."

The duo, both 22, teamed up for Thailand at the London Olympics and were competing on opposite sides for the first time since their split and tensions blew up in a feisty men's doubles contest which ended with Bodin's disqualification after he chased Maneepong around the arena.

Bodin lost his temper after Maneepong had hit him on the head with his racket at the change of ends and the crowd were left in shock as Bodin eventually tackled his former partner to the ground on a neighbouring court and rained downed punches before being pulled away.

Bodin and Maneepong made a public apology yesterday, shaking hands and attempted to put the incident behind them after landing back in Bangkok on Wednesday having taken separate flights.

Bodin's remorse meant he avoided a lifetime ban, while Maneepong's regret saw his penalty halved from six months.

Maneepong, however, suggested it would take more than a public show of remorse for the two to become friends again.

"Only if he tells the truth, but if he still tells lies, then no," Maneepong said.

Maneepong said he had also received an apology via email from Bodin, while Thai media said Bodin's wife and mother had also apologised to Maneepong.

The BWF have charged both players with inappropriate conduct, oral abuse and unsportsmanlike conduct. Bodin was also charged with physical abuse and conduct contrary to the integrity of the game. - Reuters, July 28, 2013

Rapper’s force-feeding video doesn’t impress US medics at Guantanamo Bay

Posted: 27 Jul 2013 07:34 PM PDT

July 28, 2013

A video protesting force-feeding at Guantanamo Bay detention camp in which rapper Mos Def is seen struggling and weeping while undergoing the procedure has done the rounds at the Navy base. US medics who perform the real thing on hunger-striking prisoners say they're not impressed.

"It's ridiculous. It's 100 percent false," said a Navy nurse known as "Ensign Lodowick" at the detainee hospital where real names are protected for security reasons.

The New York rapper-actor, who also goes by the name Yasiin Bey, released the video earlier this month in collaboration with Reprieve, a London-based prisoners' rights group that represents several Guantanamo hunger strikers and which describes the force-feedings as painful, humiliating and a violation of medical ethics.

Journalists are not allowed to speak to any of the 166 captives held at the American naval base in eastern Cuba nor to watch as nurses insert feeding tubes into the noses and down into the stomachs of hunger strikers who receive liquid nutrients while strapped into feeding chairs.

In accounts relayed through their lawyers, the prisoners have described rough treatment and excruciating pain.

In a series of interviews with Reuters inside the detainee hospital, Navy doctors, nurses and hospital corpsmen said most of the 44 hunger strikers they tube-feed are calm, accepting and eager to get on with what has become a daily routine.

"Most are asking us to hurry up, make it go faster," said Lieutenant Junior Grade "Lucentio," a Navy nurse. Most of the nametags on the staff's camouflage uniforms are pseudonyms drawn from Shakespearean plays.

Some detainees drink the liquid meals, usually Ensure, directly from the can, the medics said. All of them eat some regular food some of the time, but in small enough quantities to maintain their status as hunger strikers and continue their protest against open-ended detention at Guantanamo, where most have been held for 11 years without charge.

"It's a method of communication," said Petty Officer 2nd Class Bradley, a Navy corpsman.

HUNGER STRIKE 5 MONTHS OLD

Sixty-eight prisoners are currently taking part in a hunger strike that began in February, down from 106 at the peak earlier this month. Forty-four are receiving tube-feedings, which begin when they drop to 85 percent of their ideal body weight.

Numerous medical groups have called it an ethical violation to force-feed mentally competent adults who refuse food, but U.S. courts have declined to intervene to prevent it.

The hunger strike has tapered off with a pardon for disciplinary infractions during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, and a partial return to communal housing that allows some prisoners to pray and celebrate the end of the daytime religious fast together. It's unclear whether the limited truce will outlast Ramadan, which ends on August 7.

Advocates for closure of the detention facility argue that holding prisoners for years without charge or trial is a stain on the United States. They say Guantanamo is a threat to national security because it is a powerful recruiting tool for militants.

He wiggles out of a head restraint, but gives up the effort before the tube reaches his stomach, and cries.

In reality, the medics said, detainees are strapped down at the legs, waist and hands by guards, but their heads are not restrained. The slender, flexible feeding tubes are lubricated with olive oil or a pain-numbing lidocaine gel and some of the prisoners help out by swallowing them down into place. None has vomited or cried, the medics said.

Army Sergeant 1st Class Vernon Branson, a watch commander at one of the prisons, said one of his fellow guards underwent a tube-feeding to see what it was like.

"My soldier took it like a champ. He was laughing and talking the whole time," Branson said.

Branson said he used to be a Mos Def fan but the video changed that. "I deleted his music off my iPod. I was a little upset about it," he said.

The nurses said the tube-feeding procedure at Guantanamo is identical to that they have used on sailors and their families at military hospitals in the United States when patients can't take solids due to illness.

Mos Def's re-enactment was done "by the book, according to the military's standard operating procedure," said Clive Stafford Smith, the British lawyer and director of Reprieve.

"We didn't do it nearly as badly as the prisoners say it's being done to them," he told Reuters.

The medics said they are fulfilling a professional duty to preserve life.

"I'm a nurse. I didn't join the military to shoot people. I joined to save people," said "Leonato," the senior medical officer at the detainee hospital.

The medics say they don't believe that any of their patients really want to starve to death and they won't discuss the politics that keep them at Guantanamo.

They dismiss Mos Def as an actor playing a role but resent his depiction of their work.

"Nobody wants a tube in the nose but sometimes it's necessary," Lucentio said. "It's kind of disheartening to have our job skewed as monsters." – Reuters, July 28, 2013.

Durian wine, and even durian McFlurries

Posted: 27 Jul 2013 06:22 PM PDT

July 28, 2013

A fruit so stinky it's been banned in public buses and trains in Singapore has been turned into wine.

It's a formidable feat pulled off by a team of student researchers at the the National University of Singapore who hope to commercialise their durian wine and see the product on store shelves.

Known as both the "King of Fruits" and the world's stinkiest fruit, the durian is likewise perhaps the most polarising food with people who either love it hate it.

Though food and travel host Anthony Bourdain is a fan for its rich buttery, creamy flavour and texture, he also describes it in less than flattering terms.

"Its taste can only be described as...indescribable, something you will either love or despise. ...Your breath will smell as if you'd been French-kissing your dead grandmother."

Need more? It's also described by various chefs and writers as akin to eating custard in a sewer, turpentine and onions garnished with a gym sock, and rotten mushy onions.

If successful, the Singaporean doctorate students will be able to bottle it as a wine.

After testing out different fermentation methods, the end result is a wine of 6 percent alcohol which is devoid of the fruit's pungent smell.

The same team also produced a wine made of papaya as a means to reduce wastage, given that the fruit is highly susceptible to spoilage due to rapid post-harvest deterioration, high heat and humidity and poor handling.

After five years of research, scientists have come up with several different papaya wines spanning 2 to 5 percent alcohol with different characteristics and aroma profiles.

Meanwhile, recently, McDonald's in Singapore also came out with a buzz-generating durian-flavored McFlurry in time for durian season. – AFP/Relaxnews, July 28, 2013.

Website for Welsh poet Dylan Thomas’ centenary

Posted: 27 Jul 2013 05:08 PM PDT

July 28, 2013

October 27 will mark the start of Welsh poet Dylan Thomas's centenary year, with events and landmarks tracked by a new website called the Dylan Thomas 100.

The celebrated writer, who lived between 1914 and 1953, was met with acclaim for his debut collection "18 Poems" and one of his last works, the play "Under Milk Wood," which built on earlier work "Quite Early One Morning."

A celebrity in his own time and a literary icon after his early death in New York at age 39, he was known just as much for his brilliance as for his unpredictable public behaviour.

Thomas's granddaughter, Hannah Ellis, launched the website, saying "it will be a great opportunity to work together to ensure Dylan Thomas 100 is a huge success ... Please search, share, follow, like, comment and, most of all, enjoy."

An annual Dylan Thomas Festival usually runs for two weeks starting on October 27, with his birthplace of Swansea acting as host for many of the events.

In 2013, the Festival marks the beginning of a year-long celebration, whose nationwide events are to be tracked by the Dylan Thomas 100 site and include literary tours, theatrical productions, exhibitions, and musical performances.

Many of them take place along the South and Central Welsh coasts, especially in and near his Laugharne home, but others have sprung up in London, Cornwall, Sussex, and New York. – AFP/Relaxnews, July 28, 2013

Rowling responds to fans Q&A

Posted: 27 Jul 2013 04:33 PM PDT

July 28, 2013

Harry Potter creator J.K. Rowling. - AFP pic, July 28, 2013.Harry Potter creator J.K. Rowling. - AFP pic, July 28, 2013.With the publication of "The Casual Vacancy" in paperback, J.K. Rowling's first piece of adult fiction after the youth-oriented Harry Potter series, the author fielded a fan-picked question about her authorial purpose.

Characters in "The Casual Vacancy" struggle to change themselves, with hypocrisy and dishonesty identified by Rowling as major themes.

But what did Rowling hope to achieve by showing us the uglier side of human motivation, asked Goodreads member Anne Gunden.

"I wanted to show how humans can have ugly feelings that they might prefer not to acknowledge," she wrote.

"To judge someone else, to declare them substandard, to conclude that their misfortunes are due to inherent character flaws, can be a way of boosting our own self-esteem."

"Yet none of that has to stop us doing wonderful things; perfection is not necessary to make a real and lasting difference... If we make decisions in small matters in the awareness that our actions can have a huge impact on others, we will begin to make a difference."

Meanwhile, Robert Galbraith's website has been updated to reflect the widely publicised fact that the pseudonym hid Rowling's identity as the author of a well reviewed mystery thriller, albeit one whose desirability shot up once her identity was discovered.

The pen name was an amalgam of her favourite male forename -- "mercifully, I hadn't used it for any of the characters in the Potter series or The Casual Vacancy" -- and a childhood wish for a different name altogether.

And "The Cuckoo's Calling" refers to a poem by Christina Rossetti, entitled "A Dirge."

"I was yearning to go back to the beginning of a writing career in this new genre, to work without hype or expectation and to receive totally unvarnished feedback," she explained.

That she got, as two TV production companies contacted "Robert Galbraith" with regard to adapting the novel for the small screen. - AFP/Relaxnews, July 28, 2013.

Mr Prime Minister - What will you do?

Posted: 26 Jul 2013 06:33 PM PDT

July 27, 2013
Latest Update: July 28, 2013 01:33 pm

Datuk Zaid Ibrahim founded Malaysia's largest law partnership before focusing on politics. He was a minister in the Abdullah administration, was in Umno, PKR and last in KITA as its president.

Looking at the divisive and unstable scenario in the country today, whether in politics, race relations or religious tensions, I believe the nation is rushing headlong into a downward spiral.

We already have a Barisan Nasional weakened by the withdrawal of the MCA from the government.  At the moment there is a real possibility of an alliance between  right-wing forces  in Umno (those who share the thinking of Utusan)  and PAS ( those who call themselves ulama) getting together to undermine the prime minister.

The Islamic bureaucrats are flexing their muscles, churning a plethora of fatwas that will affect the daily lives of all Malaysians. The latest fatwa to curb  the activities of the Syiah smacks of a rising Muslim divide that is worrying if what happened in the Middle East and Pakistan is anything to go by.

The opposition under Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has refused to accept the Prime Minister's invitation to start building a process of reconciliation. Instead, Pakatan Rakyat insists that the General Election results were totally fraudulent and that it is, therefore, impossible to accept the prime minister's offer of peace talks.

There is little prospect, at this rate, of our nation evolving into a stable, harmonious and united country. Even the possibility of peace and stability looks dim and remote in the long term.

Emotions are running high on both sides of the political and religious divides, which is inevitable when religion and race become both conflated and contentious. It is indeed a difficult task for anyone, including the Prime Minister, to deal with effectively.

Like many people, my first reaction was to blame the Prime Minister for not being able to deal with the rising extremism - after all, he is the Numero Uno.

In fact, many people have accused him of being behind the racial and religious posturing of elements within his own party, which is then reciprocated by non-Malays who are fed up with the ridicule and taunting.

I do not think the Prime Minister is so diabolical and Machiavellian in his ways that he supports moves that will destroy the very reforms he has initiated.

Suppose that he is not, after all, as powerful as we think. Suppose he is trying his best to work within a system which, of course, he has been partly responsible for creating.

Suppose the Umno propaganda machinery of the Biro Tata Negara and Utusan Malaysia has been effective and has grown to be a monster that the Prime Minister now finds difficult to control or manage. What if a large segment of Malays have now embraced the values of the right wing  in both Umno and Pas?

If all these suppositions are true, then the Prime Minister will need help. In the face of the goings-on in this country, and in the face of the position taken by the opposition in refusing to engage with the government, what are people like you and me to do?

We could try - and we did try - to change the government by voting for the opposition at the last General Election. At the time, spirits were high and the mood was right for "people power".

We failed.

The opposition once again looks incapable of taking power at the next elections. The Ulama in Pas will certainly not accept Anwar as prime minister; nor will they accept Mat Sabu and gang.

This division within Pakatan has been shielded from the Rakyat effectively for now but that will come out in the open soon. The defeat of younger more progressive PAS leaders like Mat Sabu in the last general election is proof of this split.

The coming muktamar or general meeting in October will show us just how deep is the split in PAS, with the real possibility that the right-wing Ulama group will come out stronger.

In fact, I think this new enthusiasm to curb the spread of  Syiah is an attempt to curb the more progressive forces in PAS;  it is a political consideration and not a religious one; which then explains why even Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Son have become suddenly interested in the matter. They are now serious advocates of a ban on Syiah activities.

Even with a cleaner electoral list - as long as  the opposition is divided; and as long as Malaysians are divided along ethnic and religious lines, and as long as the BN can give generous cash handouts - BN will win again and again.

I have been a harsh critic of the Prime Minister for a while now simply because I wanted him to be strong and decisive on the major issues facing the country. At the same time, people like me should temper our expectations.

He is Prime Minister in the internet age; not like  Dr Mahathir - who could hide many things from the people. Also, Najib will neither imprison his opponents nor launch another Operasi Lalang or something as drastic and cruel to curb his opponents.

He has a different kind of personality. He will still award contracts to certain people the way Dr Mahathir did, but at least he has a detailed transformational plan for the economy.

His weakest point is his inability to curb corruption but he is building the economy.  He thinks about moving the country forward. He has repealed certain repressive laws. He even brought a Hindu rights activist into the government despite opposition from MIC .

He wanted the implementation of Key Performance Indices in the government and a system to measure the progress of his economic plans. He has taken in capable personalities like Datuk Seri Idris Jala and Datuk Seri Abdul Wahid Omar as his "backroom boys", and his transformational plans are working albeit somewhat slowly.  In short, he is pushing forward, not on all fronts, but at least on the economy.

His seriousness in transforming the economy suggests that he is not in cohorts with the right-wing forces; and although not the kind of leader who  expresses  his political beliefs  explicitly, I am inclined to put him in the neo-liberal camp. He will not align himself with the conservatives.

You must not judge him by the performance of his buddy, Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. They are just playing good cop-bad cop for the purpose of the forthcoming Umno General Assembly.  Zahid's hardline stance will be good for Najib to show the delegates that within his camp there are right wingers too!

This is why we must hope the Prime Minister's efforts to transform the economy will succeed. Economic transformation is perhaps the only solution for our racially - and religiously - divided country. If economic change and transformation were the key components responsible for the rejection of hardline Communism and central planning in Russia and China, it can also end our country's obsession with racial bigotry and religious fundamentalism.

It was the growing economic opportunities for African-Americans in the 1960s and 70s that helped the civil rights movement in America achieve its goals, more so than street demonstrations. India could not shake itself free of Nehru's romance with socialism nor could it rid itself of the debilitating effects of the caste system, corruption and bureaucracy until Atal Bihari Vajpayee undertook economic reforms to give life to the Indian nation as never before, and Manmohan Singh has borne the torch with great success to this day.

My point is this: the only way we can reduce racial polarisation and religious extremism from taking deeper root is to transform the economy and improve the quality of life of the people of this country. Nothing unites the country more than creating enough wealth and jobs for everyone to share. Nothing breaks bigotry and prejudice better than a prosperous community.

Although this economic transformation will take time, we have no other option available. Let us support the prime minister in his economic plans. - July 27, 2013.

Ramayana – Bahagian 27

Rasanya memang enak.

Tiba-tiba, mereka teringat akan Sumitra. Entah mengapa isteri termuda itu masih belum sampai. Dasaratha pula langsung tidak bertanya tentang ketiadaannya sebentar tadi.

"Sumitra mengadu sakit dan pening selepas Maharishi Shringi pergi berjumpanya. Saya harap dia sudah semakin sihat sekarang," kata Kaikeyi.

"Harap-harap begitulah.

- Bernama, 28 Julai, 2013.
