London 2017 hopes rest on Spurs stadium appeal

LONDON, July 12 – A London bid for the 2017 world athletics championships could be scuppered by legal action from Tottenham Hotspur and Leyton Orient, Sports and Olympics Minister Hugh Robertson indicated today.

Robertson told reporters on the sidelines of a British Olympic Association (BOA) presentation that he wanted to bid for an event that could bring a £100 million (RM483.05 million) boost to the capital's economy.

However, he said it depended on the High Court conclusively ruling out by September the clubs' hope of a judicial review into West Ham United's move to the 2012 Olympic Stadium after next year's Games.

London has expressed interest in hosting the 2017 championships at the Olympic Stadium, with the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) due to announce the list of official candidates on Sept. 1.

Premier League Tottenham, who had wanted to remove the athletics track and build a new stadium on the Olympic site, has applied to the London High Court to renew an application for judicial review but no date has yet been set for a hearing.

West Ham, who plan to move in for the 2014-15 season, would keep the athletics track.

"If the High Court isn't settled then we do not have a locked-down, secure venue and that will make it very difficult to bid (for 2017)," said Robertson.

Britain withdrew as hosts of the 2005 world athletics championships because the proposed venue was deemed too expensive and ditched a bid for the 2015 event because of the legal wrangle over the Olympic Stadium's future tenant.

"If we do not have a locked-down, secure venue we will not bid," added the minister.

"We are caught between the court timetables and the IAAF timetable ... the key thing is whether we can get Tottenham Hotspur and Leyton Orient's appeal through the High Court and clearly I would say dismissed before the first of September."

Asked what incentive Tottenham might have to drop their appeal, given that the North London club did not want an athletics track in the first place, Robertson replied:

"I would hope that Tottenham would actually see the greater good to London.

"It may be a fond hope, but the initial economic planning tells us that there will be a £100 million boost to the London economy from hosting a world athletics championship," he added.

"I hope that anybody involved in sport would see the greater good of that and would recognise that whatever their feelings might be about the stadium process, and I understand that disappointment, they would see the greater good."

The High Court rejected bids by both Spurs and Orient in June for a judicial review but Tottenham applied to continue the battle.

Robertson said he was otherwise committed to securing the championships as a key legacy of the Olympics.

"Let's be absolutely clear about this, I want to bid for the 2017 world athletics championships," said Robertson.

"I therefore find it rather frustrating that having been through the process we are now being dragged through the High Court, clearly won the first round and have now got the appeal to come," he added. "If we win that, we will bid." – Reuters

Atlanta holds most efficient airport title

LOS ANGELES, July 12 – Atlanta Airport has retained its top spot in a list of the world's most efficient aviation hubs released recently.

Hartsfield-Jackson, the world's busiest international airport, came top in the annual Global Airport Benchmarking Report released July 8 by research group  the Air Transport Research Society (ATRS).

The report, which looks at everything from traffic figures, delays, management and passenger figures, named Atlanta, which is the hub of US carrier Delta, as the most efficient for the sixth year running.

Hong Kong also retained its crown as the most efficient airport in Asia, with Singapore in second place and Guangzhou in third place thanks to a boost of almost a third in efficiency from last year.

In Europe, last year's winner Oslo International had to share the top efficiency award with Copenhagen Kastrup, which ATRS attributed to a strong financial performance from Copenhagen.

The study also looked at the cost for airlines to operate (landing and passenger charges) in the world's airports, potentially providing some useful indicators of hubs that could grow quickly in the future.

In Asia, the lowest costs were to be found in Kuala Lumpur, said ATRS, along with Chennai and Mumbai in India – the highest were in Japan's Kansai, Nagoya and Narita airports.

In Europe, the charges were lowest at Brussels, Riga (Latvia) and Manchester (UK), while in the US they were lowest at Charlotte, NC, Atlanta, GA and Salt Lake City, UT. – AFP

Infineon Raceway adds solar panels for power, sheep for mowers

SONOMA, Califormia, July 12 — There is no better place to test alternative fuels and energy than at the race track. So imagine how happy I was to hear that Infineon Raceway has added 353 KW of solar panels, and an army of hungry sheep, to its green portfolio.

The massive solar array was unveiled this month, and consists of 1,652 separate solar panels strategically located at five positions around the race track. Together, the 353 KW solar system will be able to provide up to 41 per cent of the racetrack's power usage.

Panasonic began installing the HIT photovoltaic panels last fall, and only just completed it at the end of June. Infineon is getting some great publicity, and big cost savings to boot. Going green, saving green, that's the way it's gotta be.

But it isn't the only green initiative Infineon officials have undertaken. A flock of about 3,000 sheep continually graze the fields around the track, and owl boxes around the perimeter lure the predators here to help keep the rodent and insect population down without using pesticides.

Along with the installation of a new LED video board that consumes 50 per cent less power, this green raceway is among an elite few now drawing power from the elements around it, and cutting their energy bills down by big margins.

Pocono Raceway made headlines last year after unveiling a 3 MegaWatt solar array on 25 acres that completely powers the historic racetrack, and will pay itself off in four to five years. It's not known how long Infineon's solar system will take to pay off, but you can't put a price on good, green publicity. — Reuters

Jamie Oliver, Sainsbury part company after 11 years

Posted: 12 Jul 2011 08:22 AM PDT

LONDON, July 12 — J Sainsbury, the British grocer which urges shoppers to "try something new today," is following its own advice after agreeing to part company with celebrity chef Jamie Oliver following an 11-year association.

Britain's third-biggest supermarket group said today the two sides had agreed to end their partnership, which has spawned over 100 television advertisements, at the end of this year.

"The decision has been made because both parties feel that it's the right time to move on, especially as Oliver (picture) seeks to spend more time on his social projects through The Jamie Oliver Foundation both in the UK and abroad," Sainsbury's said.

Mark Wahlberg, Jonah Hill team up for ‘Good Time Gang’

Posted: 12 Jul 2011 07:38 AM PDT

LOS ANGELES, July 12 — Mark Wahlberg ("The Fighter") and Jonah Hill ("Get Him to the Greek") are teaming up for "Good Time Gang," an action-comedy, reports the Los Angeles Times.

In the vein of "Lethal Weapon" and "The Other Guys," in which Wahlberg costarred with Will Ferrell, the film is written by Max Landis, the son of John Landis ("The Blues Brothers").

The story follows a pair of incompetent mercenaries who take on a terrorist case in an effort to get ahead. But things get complicated when they uncover that one of them is related to the target.

Hill will be seen in the comedy "The Sitter" with Sam Rockwell in August, the baseball drama "Moneyball" with Brad Pitt, due September 23, and "21 Jump Street," the film adaptation of the 1980s American television series starring Johnny Depp as a teen cop, due in theatres March 2012.

Wahlberg (picture) stars in "Ted" with Mila Kunis ("Black Swan"), about a man with a teddy bear that comes to life. Opening in July 2012, the comedy is directed/written by Seth McFarlane, who created the hit animated American television shows "The Family Guy" and "The Cleveland Show."

The actor also plans more dramatic roles in gangster film "When Corruption Was King," a remake of the 1971 film "Billy Jack," and the sequel to "The Fighter." — AFP /Relaxnews

Dismantling the tyranny of democracy

Posted: 11 Jul 2011 05:14 PM PDT

JULY 12 — A government elected by the people, for the people — that is the bedrock principle of any fully-functioning democracy.

As we recover from the aftermath of the events on July 9, 2011, I find myself having to explain this very crucial principle to some of the people who are most important to me — my children.

I feel compelled to do so simply because there is so much misinformation out there that the young will inevitably be misled and confused.

Like, for example, my son said to me a day after the Bersih 2.0 rally: "Pa, can we wear yellow again?" Admittedly, I should have explained to him earlier what was going on and why the government of the day has outlawed people wearing yellow T-shirts, which carry the word Bersih 2.0.

Then there is the bunkum that permeated the media in the days after the rally. Led by many government-friendly news organisations — who time and again try to paint the idea that the Bersih 2.0 movement is on the wrong side of the law, as well as one-sided opinions on blogs — I needed to undo the misinformation that is circling around my kids' heads.

As a responsible Malaysian citizen and a parent to Malaysian kids, explaining the truth and going back to the basic principles of democracy are a must.

There are many reasons why what happened last Saturday was wrong. From the show of unnecessary force by the police to the insincerity of the government and its officials in making bad-faith offers to Bersih 2.0, to how one-sided and deep-slanted the spin against the movement was after the event. These are the things that need to be explained to young minds.

But I believe that all this misinformation pales in comparison to the one argument government officials always cite: That if the rakyat are not happy with this sitting government, go to the polls and change the government.

While in itself that statement seems logical and correct democratically speaking, the plain truth is that in Malaysia this advice is pointless and ineffectual.

Why?

The democratic principle of "a government elected by the people, for the people," necessitates and demands that a sitting government listens to its people.

In other thriving and fully functioning democracies around the world, this is expressed through the polls when their citizens make their voices heard and has the power to kick out an incumbent government, just like what happened in Britain recently. In short, governments come and go as a result of the people's wishes through elections.

But such mechanisms only work if there are free and fair election processes and practices.

For us in Malaysia, how can the people change the government of the day through the polls when the current electoral processes and procedures are unfair, one-sided and not effective in the first place?

Thus, I find this argument that our sitting government often preaches is oxymoronic because as long as there are ineffective electoral systems and corrupt practices within the electoral process, there can't be a level playing field for people wanting to change the government.

Such advice therefore only belies what the government tries to preach, and the irony of it all is that this sitting government is never going to change as long as there is this one-sided playing field and the powers-that-be are in full control.

This is why I believe government officials always resort to the argument that "people should change the government of the day by means of the polls," as the powers-that-be always know that this will never happen as long as they are in control of the electoral institutions and the policies that govern these institutions.

And the proof is in the pudding, as for 54 years we've ever only known a federal government that has been led by Barisan Nasional.

Malaysia can never be a true and fully functioning democracy when there is no level playing field, nor a chance to change its elected officials and the government of the day through a fair electoral process.

It's akin to saying: "Heads the government wins, tails we, the rakyat, lose."

This, at least for me, is why the struggle of Bersih 2.0 is important — to bring about clean and fair electoral reform to the country for ALL its people.

To me, it's not about opposition parties being in control or trying to ram through their own political agenda. Nor is it about the incumbent government trying to vilify Bersih 2.0 as an illegal trouble-making, rebel-rousing group of people.

It's simply about demanding for clean, fair and free elections in the country.

That said, I'm mindful that the struggle of Bersih 2.0 will continue and pundits will continue to weigh in as to whether it can make an impact in areas of the country where it really matters — deep in the Malay heartland — and not in the suburban and urban areas.

But what of us? What can we do now in the present?

One place I think we can certainly begin making an impact in — to borrow the words of management guru Stephen R. Covey — is to expound, educate, defend and persuade the people who are in our "circle of influence" about the need for electoral reform in order to break the rule of those who are corrupt and tyrannical in their ways.

This is certainly what I'm going to do, beginning with my household, my children, and the people who are in my influence, including many young people, business leaders and the general public, that I as a journalist have a chance to interact with.

Bersih 2.0 represents the aspirations of the rakyat for a clean and fair electoral process so that Malaysia can go back to the roots and fundamentals of democracy — a government elected by the people, for the people.

And don't forget, it's only when we have a government elected by the people, for the people, will we be able to put upright people in Parliament and derive a just government to rule over the rakyat.

So join me in the fight for a better Malaysia and influence as many people around us with the correct democratic thinking and get them to vote in the next polls according to what they believe is right.

After all, this is your right as a democratic citizen of Malaysia.

Bersih tetap aman

Posted: 11 Jul 2011 05:04 PM PDT

Isu saham: Anak saudara Sultan Selangor mohon bonda dipenjara

Posted: 12 Jul 2011 02:43 AM PDT
