England scrum-half Care ruled out of World Cup

Posted: 17 Aug 2011 06:34 AM PDT

LONDON, Aug 18 – England scrum-half Danny Care was today ruled out of the World Cup starting in New Zealand next month after injuring a toe.

England's governing body, the Rugby Football Union, said Care (picture) would undergo surgery later this week after damaging the toe playing against Wales on Saturday.

England team manager Martin Johnson said: "We are all hugely disappointed for Danny who has worked extremely hard and has been an important part of the squad.

"We are fortunate to have depth at 9 with Ben Youngs back into full training, Joe Simpson & Richard Wigglesworth."

England are due to open their World Cup campaign against Argentina in Dunedin on Sept. 10. – Reuters

BERLIN, Aug 17 – Schalke 04 striker Raul, who rejected an offer to move to Blackburn Rovers yesterday, has not travelled with the team to Finland for their Europa League playoff against HJK Helsinki, the club said today.

Officially Schalke said that the 34-year-old Raul stayed back to be ready for their Bundesliga game against Mainz 05 at the weekend and would not play in the first leg of the playoff against Helsinki on artificial grass tomorrow.

But if Raul played in Helsinki, he would not be eligible to play in European competitions for another club, should he choose to move.

Schalke team manager Horst Heldt said today that Raul had informed the German club he did not want to move to Blackburn, who had earlier officially expressed an interest in signing the former Real Madrid and Spain striker.

Heldt, however, did not rule out a move by Raul before the end of the transfer window, telling Bild newspaper that the Spaniard would be staying at Schalke "as things stand now".

Raul, who has a contract until 2012, has been linked with a move after rejecting a spot on the club's board and seeing his freedom on the pitch curbed by his replacement Ralf Rangnick this term.

He scored a superb goal in last weekend's 5-1 win over Cologne but hardly celebrated, fanning speculation he was not happy in Gelsenkirchen and was ready to leave. – Reuters

Volvo gets sexy… finally!

Posted: 16 Aug 2011 10:13 PM PDT

The sexy Volvo S60 T5 — Picture by Lionel Yew

KUALA LUMPUR, AUG 17 — Mention the brand Volvo and what comes to mind? For me, three things: Lat comic strips, a bath towel and finally, an injured finger!

Remember how Lat always had a Volvo 122 in his comic strips? Since then, the 122 is the Lat Volvo to me. Fast forward 20 years and I myself own a Volvo 240SE. A 28-year old fella driving around in something that only doctors or government officials own? Didn't quite make any sense to my friends.

But then again, none of them had kids yet at the time. My first child had already come along and the only reason why I bought the 240SE was because apart from putting her into a cocoon (or a tank), there was nothing safer.

Being a Continental car, the Volvo didn't have the efficient air-conds that some other cars did back then. Occasionally, my wife would drive the car and complain that it was so "hot and heavy."

She suggested that instead of having a box of tissues in the car, we should have bath towels instead to mop up the sweat.

And then finally, there was the time I got my pinkie caught between the door and the frame of my 240SE... all eight inches of metal, lined with more metal, crushing down on calcium (and fat tissues) lined with a thin layer of calcium. OH. GOOD GOD! My neighbours heard a combination of swear words they never imagined could be put together.

So, now that I've painted a mental image of what the Volvo means to me, let's see what emotions the current generation of Volvos stir up.

From the time they introduced the 3-point safety belt in 1959 till the "Collision Warning", Volvo has always been about safety. I mean, that's the only reason why people buy Volvos right? Not because it looks cool, not because it's a performance vehicle and sure as hell not because it's Swedish.

From time immemorial, people bought Volvos because they knew they were going to get to their destination safe and in one piece. It was only later that Volvo themselves realised that something was missing from their cars… the sexiness. Come on man, the Germans had sexy written all over their cars. The Japanese artificially inseminated sexy into their cars.

The British eventually caught on to the idea by which time they were bought over. Even the Koreans knew that. If they could, they would throw in a band member from Girls Generation into every car they export!  So why has it taken Volvo so long to realise this?

OK, the why I don't know. But the when, that I can tell you… it's NOW! The S60 is sexy. All the muscles and brains in the right places and still not forgetting that safety is still the priority.

You could say that getting into one and driving it is like… how shall I put it... SAFE SEX! All the pleasures you can think of but nothing to worry about. What more can you ask for?

When I say all the pleasures, leave it to these Nordic folks. Ever walk into Ikea, look at their stuff and think to yourself, "Wah… these people are so clever one ah? They tink of everytink." Yup folks, from the driver, to the passenger and to the guys sitting at the back, these people have thought of EVERYTHING!

Everything revolves around safety; the safety of the driver, the passenger and also all around the car. I mean, the list of safety features goes on and on and on. Just to give you an idea, the safety briefing took an hour. But it would be unfair if I didn't highlight my favourite… this feature called "Adaptive Cruise Control."

I know, I know, some of you are already sniggering… "My car also got what? So what so special about this feature?" My question to you is why are you reading this then? Feeling that the grass might be greener on the other side, eh? I'm not preaching to the converted.

Then again... hang on, what's new anymore right? Eh, don't distract me! This system allows you to set the speed limit (of course when you're on the highway) and if you approach a vehicle that's slower than you, the car will automatically keep a safe distance between you and the car in front. Automatically!

The brakes apply on their own, the accelerator goes on its own if the car either moves away or speeds up. All the way from KL to Seremban, I only pressed on the brakes twice. Once because I panicked thinking that this ACC was too good to be true. The other time, a typical Malaysian driver cut into my lane. That's another story for another day. I also tried it out in the KL jam… also works! Set the limit, activate the cruise control and let the car do the job for you. So cool right? "Like auto-pilot, huh, Daddy?" exclaimed my son.

The Front Blind View Camera is also something worth mentioning. You know how our city planners love to plant trees right at the corner of the junction? Or even how some drivers just park their cars at corners and you can't see what's around the car? Well, this camera allows you to see exactly where you can't see.

Another thing that I was quite impressed with was the fuel consumption. I can't say that I was feathering the throttle most of the time. In fact, it was quite the opposite. The engine was just raring to go and I couldn't bear to tell it no. I won't tell you how fast I was going but I'll give you a hint later. So, even after all that "feathering", I was getting decent mileage of 550km to the tank. I was expecting much, much worse from a small-ish 67-litre tank.

For those who drive a lot, I know you'll love the heated seats function. OK, don't let the name fool you. The heat doesn't come from the seats but goes to the lumbar area. What good will that do? Ever gone for a massage because your back is totally "sngui" (Hokkien for sore muscles). The heat therapy and the massage eventually puts your back muscles at ease. Have they thought of everything or what man!

My kids had a different tale to tell, just as good, but just from a different view. The back-of-my-head view. While my kids may not be looking at it from the overall safety features of the car, Volvo can take pride in the fact in all the years of having these monkeys in the back seat, I have never had it this easy.

Not a single squeak from them. Not a single, "Are we there yet?" The entertainment system had them over the moon. Each of them had their own screen. Short of having a cabin crew serve them drinks, they thought they were on a plane.

Apart from that , of course the car also has a long list of other features that are also similar to other cars in this category, but to me they don't resonate safety as well as these folks in Volvo have done. However, to the doubting Thomas if Volvo can price their car better and still have all these features, then you'd be in a dilemma because the grass IS greener on the other side.

With the new CKD version, apparently the prices are more palatable. The T5 is targeted at RM255,000 and the T4, at RM220,000. Plus, everything that you find in the CBU model will be made available in the CKD version. Hahaha… is your name still Thomas?

So, okay you now have to ask yourself the ultimate question, why am I even considering this car? It's your needs, your family's needs. With this car, everyone's needs are taken care of. Volvo may have come into the game late but I think they've done well this time in marrying chunky metal with sexy curves and a monstrous engine. And now, I understand why they call this car "naughty" *nudge nudge wink wink*.

Mekong dolphins on brink of extinction, says WWF

Posted: 16 Aug 2011 08:21 PM PDT

Irrawaddy dolphin — Foto by WWF

TOKYO, Aug 17 — The Irrawaddy dolphin population in the Mekong River numbers roughly 85, with the survival of new calves very low, suggesting they are at high risk of extinction, environmental group WWF said today.

The Irrawaddy dolphins live in a 190km section of the Mekong between Kratie, Cambodia and the Khone Falls, which are on the border with Laos.

Fishing gear, especially gill nets, and illegal fishing methods involving explosions, poison and electricity all appear to be taking a toll, with surveys conducted from 2007 to 2010 showing the dolphin population slowly declining, the WWF added.

"Evidence is strong that very few young animals survive to adulthood, as older dolphins die off and are not replaced," said Li Lifeng, director of WWR's Freshwater Programme, in a statement.

"This tiny population is at risk by its small size alone. With the added pressure of gill net entanglement and high calf mortality, we are really worried for the future of dolphins."

Research also shows that the population of dolphins in a small transboundary pool on the Cambodia-Laos border may be as few as 7 or 8, the WWF added, despite the fact that Irrawaddy dolphins are protected by law in both nations.

The group called on Cambodia to establish a clear legal framework to protect dolphins, including steps such as banning gill nets if needed.

"Our best chance of saving this iconic species from extinction in the Mekong River is through joint conservation action," Li said.

Dolphins once ranged from the Mekong delta in Vietnam up through the Tonle Sap in Cambodia, and then up tributaries into Laos, but shot by soldiers and harvested for oil in the past.

Irrawaddy dolphins are found in coastal areas in South and Southeast Asia, and in three rivers: the Mekong, the Ayeyarwady in Myanmar, and the Mahakam in Indonesian Borneo. — Reuters

Tenor Domingo in benefit for quake-hit Christchurch

Posted: 17 Aug 2011 03:22 AM PDT

WELLINGTON, Aug 17 – Spanish opera star Placido Domingo will perform a one-off benefit concert in Christchurch to raise funds for the arts in the earthquake devastated New Zealand city, it was announced yesterday.

Southern Opera Trust chair Christopher Doig said Domingo (picture) was keen to help Christchurch because he understood the issues facing the city after losing four of his relatives when a massive earthquake hit Mexico City in 1985.

Doig said funds from the October 6 concert would go to the restoration of Christchurch's Court Theatre and the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra.

"(Domingo) said that made a lot of sense to him because... having been affected himself personally by the Mexican earthquake in 1985 he had great sympathy for the people of Christchurch," Doig told Radio New Zealand.

"He agreed to substantially reduce his fee provided we made a significant return back to earthquake-stricken arts organisatons in Christchurch."

A 6.3-magnitude tremor hit New Zealand's second largest city in February, killing 181 people and destroying most of the downtown area where arts organisations were based.

A Minute With: Colin Farrell on his ‘Fright Night’

Posted: 17 Aug 2011 02:15 AM PDT

LOS ANGELES, Aug 17 – For years, Colin Farrell's reputation as a party boy preceded him, but now he seems to have channeled his wild impulses into inspired performances in films such as "Horrible Bosses," "In Bruges" and "The Way Back."

In his new movie "Fright Night," a 3D update of the 1985 comedy cult favorite, Farrell (picture) stars as Jerry, a sinister vampire who moves in next door to a naive high school student played by Anton Yelchin and his mother, played by Toni Collette.

The Dublin-born actor spoke about making the film, playing a vampire and why audiences love to be scared.

Q: You just played a horrible boss and now a vampire that must be fun for an actor to do such varied parts back-to-back?

A: "Yeah, but it's a shorter road between the two than you might imagine – two fun characters. I felt like I'd had four or five years where I'd done more dramatic pieces and played characters that weren't really having a good time in their lives for a variety of reasons, and I'd wanted to do something lighter. Then these two films came along and it was happy days – time to go and play."

Q: But didn't they have to persuade you to do this?

A: "I was dubious at first. I loved the original and you like to think of yourself as mixing things up and being a bit original – and this is a remake of a vampire film in 3D. That's kind of three for three in unoriginality.

"But I felt I was in good hands with (director) Craig Gillespie who did 'Lars and the Real Girl'. I was a big fan of that, and I just loved the script. I didn't want to like it, but it was a blast of a read. And playing the villain was great, although I think my character's more on the periphery than he was in the original, and there's more attention paid to Anton's journey from boyhood to manhood."

Q: What about the vampire teeth?

A: "Easy! They do the mold, then file them down, and you don't even notice them wearing them. And it's great fun. You put them in, and instantly, because of all the films you saw as a kid, you start acting a certain way."

Q: Sexy. Vampires have always been sexy.

A: "Always, and that's the appeal. Human beings are always trying to bend and manipulate time to be in their favor and trying to defeat the ravages of age. And vampires are eternally young, although it'd probably be very annoying to be turned into one at 97, or 6. And then how they attack and feed off their prey seems very sensual and erotic – biting the neck. You don't have to be a vampire to partake in such activity, but it takes it to an extreme. Blood is the liquid of life."

Q: Was it tricky finding the right tone and balance between the horror and the comedy?

A: "That was always going to be what this film worked or failed on, striking the right tone. That's why having Craig direct, as much as it seemed a delightfully left or right of center choice, was perfect because he found such a beautiful and harmonious chord between the absurdity in "Lars" and the emotional sensitivity. So even though this is a totally different genre and structure, I knew he could apply the same ability and level of finesse."

Q: "Were you a big horror fan?"

A: "Huge! Growing up I loved 'Nightmare on Elm Street,' 'Halloween' and 'Friday the 13th,' and there was nothing like being scared. And still to this day, just sitting in the cinema and being frightened and sharing laughter – there's nothing like it."

Q: Why do people love to be scared so much?

A: "I think it's just anything that allows us to feel in life. A lot of the time, we go through the day trying to control things and we spend a lot of time in our heads and concerned and worried about how we're doing and how those we care about are getting along, and although that may feel like an emotional thing, a lot of time it's mental. So to have some visceral reaction in life to get that adrenaline going is a good thing. It makes you feel alive. – Reuters

Nik Aziz: Umno politikkan bacaan al-Quran Pulau Pinang tapi bisu isu Melaka

Posted: 17 Aug 2011 03:13 AM PDT

"Tapi nampaknya, sangkaan saya agak tersasar.

Forgetting our past

Posted: 16 Aug 2011 04:55 PM PDT

AUG 17 — The quiet passing of Tengku Ismail Tengku Su, a  renowned Terengganu songket maker and owner of the majestic Pura Tanjung Sabtu (www.puratanjungsabtu.com) last weekend, is a stark reminder to us all that our cultural heritage is not a serious matter to the average Malaysian.

Tengku Ismail Tengku Su, and his peers such as Prof. Zul Mohammad, Prof. Ungku Aziz and other lesser known but equally passionate cultural activists, are known only to those as obsessed about culture and heritage, and loved by their close friends and relatives.

Outside of these circles, these personalities are not known. In fact, some may view these men and women as oddities, for running around inspecting rubbish dumps in villages, and resurrecting old Malay houses that rural people deem as fit for burning.

There are some, like the eminent Prof Khoo Khay Kim, who are remembered by Malaysians, and it is because of their written work and constant presence in the media.

But the ones who are not so visible, should also be admired and appreciated, for it is these very people who will delight you with tales and facts of a Malaya that many of us cannot even remember or imagine.

While Malaysians protest, and campaign for voters' rights, free and fair elections, better governance, robust economy and fairness, they should also remember their personal and national histories.

We fight for a better future, but we tend to forget the past. When we do, it would only be at certain functions. We all clap our hands when we watch old Malay films and dance to songs that tickle our feet, but do we really embrace our past?

I don't think we do. We hardly even appreciate our language; instead we exchange them for English and Arab words. We may speak our mother tongue, but most times, it is a colloquial one, and even worse, bastardised, for as I was once told, to speak in proper Malay, the Malay of the old, is the order of the elite, and not of the ordinary Malay.

We talk about how other countries celebrate their culture: Indonesia. Thailand. Vietnam. Even the French are proud of who they are. Back home, for example, I was told that there are two belanga makers left in Terengganu.

One is on his way to old age and senility and the other dreams of those days when his art was appreciated as a functional and yet artistic ornament of a home. While we idolise the others, we unfortunately do not care for our own.

As a relative, and also friend and student of these eccentric, yet knowledgable creatures, I have witnessed what they have to go through to receive just a nod.

Yes, these personalities can be volatile. Disorganised. Have no business sense. And sometimes, very gullible. It is these character flaws that have been their downfall, at the hands of "people in authority."

An important person in government reneging on sponsorship. Someone else taking off with their ideas. Even worse, instead of helping these artists and the poor, these people in power take their skills and art, and turn them into very strange and expensive products.

Some of these people have no choice but to become cunning. They swan, flatter and befriend those with money and status. And they come back to friends, and utter words of contempt not only for these titled personalities but for themselves too, for becoming beggars for their art and cause.

But to get some money, they become temporary court jesters. Of course, not all these cultural activists are like that, but I have seen of a few putting on masks. It is not a life to be envied. But you must do what you must, I suppose.

They lead hard lives, these men and women, as they fight for their cause. Many are just ordinary academics or professionals. It is one thing to support a family; it is another to support a dying craft that is very expensive to sustain.

Other people ask, "Why bother? It is not our way anyway. It is syirk/old/not progressive." Others, wanting an extra social cachet, leech on to these personalities, parading them at events and parties.

Social climbers name drop these people's names. What a life an amateur historian has to lead!

Still, despite the shark infested waters of a world that changes by the second, influenced by the global economy, reality TV and bonkers politics, these people are the ones who respect a past which made our country what it is.

It is they who educate us, (whether we want to listen is another thing altogether), who remind us of who we really are. They deserve scholarships and titles for their tenacity.

Many, before Tengku Ismail, have passed on and taken national secrets with them to their graves. Many after he, will do the same or just disappear. They will be known as that peculiar relative with books and papers piled as high as a coconut tree, living at home by himself.

It is an extraordinary life that they lead. What a pity that Malaysians think of them as ordinary.

Mengenali puasa

Posted: 16 Aug 2011 04:49 PM PDT
