Tiger gets by with a little help from his friend

Posted: 08 Mar 2013 07:41 AM PST

March 08, 2013

World number one and two golfers Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods paired in the first round of the 2013 WGC-Cadillac Championship in Doral. — Reuters picMIAMI, March 8 — Tiger Woods's sharp putting helped him to a share of the five-way lead at the WGC-Cadillac Championship yesterday after he got lessons on the practice green from one of his opponents.

Woods worked with Steve Stricker, one of the game's best putters, for over an hour on Wednesday and it clearly worked as he shot a six-under 66 at Doral, with just 23 putts in his round, including a 38-footer for birdie on the fourth hole.

"Whatever he says, I'm going to do. He's one of the best putters that's ever lived," Woods said after his round.

The world number two was not satisfied with his performance on the greens at last week's Honda Classic, where he squandered several birdie chances and was looking for a way to recapture the form he showed at Torrey Pines in late January when he won the Farmers Insurance Open.

"He got me into the same posture that I was at Torrey. I had gotten off a little bit. So I felt comfortable, basically just like I did at Torrey, and I started rolling it just like I did then," said Woods.

"He can see the things that are off a little bit, because he knows my stroke so well. Just gave me a couple little things to think about, and, lo and behold, I started feeling just like I did at Torrey and the ball started rolling."

Stricker's generous help looked even more selfless after the round, given he himself finished just a stroke off the leaders.

In the final count, after Sunday's fourth round, Woods's improved putting could conceivably cost Stricker some serious cash but he said he was just doing what golfing friends did.

"I think it's just the nature of our game that we're friends out here, although we are competitors, we are friends," said Stricker.

"You like to see your friend do well, and you sometimes need another pair of eyes. Tiger, I'm sure, didn't feel any of those things that I saw, but I've watched him so much over the years that I saw right away, and anyways, he helps me out, too."

Stricker said he was once helped out post-round on the range at Doral by Jack Nicklaus and made the cut while the golfing great missed out.

Woods agreed: "Whether it's one generation to the next or it's your current competitors, it's just the nature of our sport. We just do that," he said.

Stricker is playing a restricted schedule this season and Woods joked he might take advantage of that.

"I think I'm going to have a contract with him, because he's only going to play, what, five tournaments this year? So I'll bring him out in his off-weeks," he said with a grin. — Reuters

United’s European exit spells bad news for City, says Mancini

Posted: 08 Mar 2013 06:46 AM PST

March 08, 2013

MANCHESTER, March 8 — Manchester United's exit from the Champions League has made it harder for Manchester City to retain their Premier League title, the champions' manager Roberto Mancini said today.

Mancini: "Injured" United bad news for City's quest for silverware. — Reuters file picAlex Ferguson's side, whose elimination by Real Madrid on Tuesday has left them with only domestic matters to focus on, had some unlikely supporters of their European campaign in Manchester City.

"It's worse for us because I think now they put all their strength into the championship," Mancini, whose side trail United by 12 points, told a news conference.

"I think for us it was better they stayed in the Champions League. They would have played an important game every three days, it is more difficult."

Before the Manchester clubs get back to their league duel, they turn their attention to the FA Cup, with United hosting Chelsea in the quarter-finals on Sunday the day after City entertain Championship (second tier) Barnsley.

Mancini will be without injured forward Sergio Aguero, who did not play in Monday's 1-0 league win over Aston Villa because of a knee problem, and captain Vincent Kompany, who has been absent with a calf injury since late January.

"I don't think that it is serious but in this moment we can't take a risk with Sergio," he said.

"Vinnie was training with the team yesterday but I don't think we can take a risk with Vinnie. Maybe he is ready for the next game against Everton."

With City so many points behind United in the Premier League, the FA Cup might provide a slightly easier chance of silverware for Mancini's men, who won the competition in 2011.

"For a team like us it is very important to win something every year," the Italian said.

"It's better if it is Premier League or Champions League, Europa League. But also the FA Cup is important."

He had faint hopes that United's European disappointment might knock their confidence but all his side could really do was try to win every game.

"We hope (it affects their confidence)," he said. "Sometimes it is possible but they are strong enough.

"Our job is only to try to the end of the season ... It is important to be strong in the difficult moments.

"We can improve, we have 10 games (to play in the league) and we need to work for this." — Reuters

Posted: 08 Mar 2013 10:09 AM PST

March 09, 2013

— Bernama

Greece set for comeback as tourist destination

Posted: 08 Mar 2013 06:35 AM PST

March 08, 2013

Putting on the best face for Greece at the ITB fair in Berlin. — Reuters picBERLIN, March 8 — Tourism in Greece is bouncing back this year in an otherwise flat European market, held back by the weak economic climate, travel industry executives said.

The desire for a beach holiday closer to home for cost-conscious consumers in Europe is helping to revive tourism demand in the country, battling recession and a debt crisis.

Doerte Nordbeck from market research group GfK showed in a presentation at the ITB travel fair this week that bookings to Greece from Britain, Germany and the Netherlands for this summer were up 10 per cent.

Tourism income for Greece, its chief money spinner, fell by 4.6 per cent to €9.89 billion (RM40 billion) from January-November in 2012, according to the country's central bank.

Arrivals from Germany, Greece's biggest tourism market, dropped by almost a fifth, partly on fears about a backlash on German tourists caused by Berlin's tough austerity demands on Athens.

Alltours, Germany's No. 4 tour operator, said bookings for holidays in Greece were up 30 per cent on the year by March 5, boding well for the country where tourism accounts for around one-fifth of output and one in five jobs.

"The tourism industry in Greece has overcome the crisis of the last two years and is now back on top form," said Willi Verhuven, chief executive of German tour operator Alltours.

Verhuven said the company was in particular seeing a surge in bookings from repeat customers who had ditched Greece in favour of other resorts.

Europe's largest tour operator TUI Travel is also seeing a comeback for Greece, with bookings at the group's German unit up 4 per cent. Bookings from the UK are performing strongly, a spokesman said.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who opened the ITB fair this year, called on trade fair visitors to take holidays in ailing euro zone states such as Greece, Spain, Portugal and Italy to help create jobs.

"I also wish that European countries which are famous for tourism get good custom — I name Greece, Spain, Portugal, Italy — all countries in which growth is really necessary at the moment and where we have to make an effort to finally get people back into work," she said.

Europe weakens

Globally, the tourism industry — worth an estimated US$1.15 trillion (RM3.57 trillion) last year — is expected to grow by between 3 and 4 per cent in 2013, driven by up to 6 per cent higher visitor numbers in emerging markets, according to latest estimates from the UN World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO).

It sees growth in Europe, the world's No. 1 tourist destination, slowing to 2 per cent or holding steady at 3 per cent as the region's debt and financial crisis rumbles on.

But Germany's federal tourist association BTW forecasts growth of just 1 to 2 per cent this year owing to the uncertain economic environment.

"If the weak economy begins to seriously affect the employment market and domestic demand then this will also impact on the tourism industry," group president Michael Frenzel said.

Germany's national tourist board also sounded a note of caution. "The European financial and debt crisis is still a long way from being overcome yet," said Klaus Laepple, president of the tourist board.

Emerging markets such as China and Russia would continue to be the main driver of growth for international tourism, Rolf Freitag, head of tourism consultancy IPK, said.

Asia Pacific was seen recording the biggest increase in visitor numbers this year, with growth of between 5 and 6 per cent, followed by Africa, where arrivals were expected to increase by between 4 and 6 per cent, UNWTO said.

Last year, emerging market countries attracted 4.1 per cent more tourists while their mature counterparts catered for 3.6 per cent more travellers, according to UNTWO data. — Reuters

Europe searches for charms to lure Chinese tourists

Posted: 08 Mar 2013 05:54 AM PST

March 08, 2013

At the booth of the German state of Schleswig-Holstein at the International Tourism fair in Berlin, which runs from March 6 to 10. — Reuters picBERLIN, March 8 — European countries will need to focus less on beach holidays and more on communist history, rolling landscapes and even poetic trees if they want to take advantage of growing numbers of tourists from China.

According to the China Tourism Academy, some 200 million Chinese could be travelling abroad annually by 2020, up from 82 million in 2012.

While the overriding image of the Chinese tourist in Europe is one of busloads of shoppers heading for the luxury boutiques in Paris and Milan, Europe must not get carried away by these stereotypes, and think of other ways to lure them on a long-haul flight, experts at the ITB travel fair in Berlin said.

"We're been thinking not like Chinese, but like Europeans," Eduardo Santander, the head of the European Travel Commission, which promotes tourism to the continent, told Reuters.

"Europe is still the number 1 tourism destination so far but that may dramatically change in 10 to 15 years if we don't change some patterns."

For Chinese tourists, the sun and beaches of the Mediterranean that were so popular with Brits, Germans and Russians held little appeal, said TUI Travel CEO Peter Long.

Instead they want to visit places that hold historical relevance for their own culture. They enjoyed classical music and, wanting to escape the smog back home, they appreciated a clear blue sky, Santander said, citing a study the group had done among Chinese web users.

Interesting places for Chinese travellers looking to explore Communist history include the German city of Trier, the birthplace of Karl Marx, and Montargis, a little-known town 97km south of Paris.

Chinese history lovers are keen to visit Montargis because it was the home of Deng Xiaoping during the 1920s and said to be the place where a group of Chinese students first proposed the idea of a communist party for China.

Furthermore, if you see groups of Chinese people admiring a willow tree at King's College, Cambridge, it is because it is mentioned in a much-loved modern poem "On Leaving Cambridge", by Xu Zhimo.

Spanish dreams

With the euro zone crisis and austerity measures crimping travel budgets in Europe, it has become all the more urgent for countries such as Spain and Greece to look outside their traditional British, Dutch and German source markets for income.

In Europe demand for cross-border travel is due to rise by only 2 per cent in 2013, compared with 7 per cent for Asia.

In Spain, where tourism accounts for 11 per cent of gross domestic product, 57.7 million tourists visited in 2012. But arrivals from Britain, the country's biggest source market with close to a quarter of the total number of visitors, were flat.

"The British and the Germans are not getting richer... and the times of flying for £10 from London to Spain are ending," Wolfgang Georg Arlt of Chinese tourism research institute COTRI said.

Spain has therefore set a target of reaching 1 million Chinese visitors a year by 2020, up from 177,100 in 2012, a goal described by Arlt as a tall order.

Shao Qiwei, chairman of China's National Tourism Administration, said Spain must also overcome the language barrier to attract more Chinese tourists and adapt dishes to their tastes.

"We are hoping for more Chinese tour guides in museums and tourist sites and to see Chinese television in Spanish hotels," Shao said at a UNWTO event in Madrid.

Cultural barrier

It's not easy to adapt though and the ETC's Santander said his organisation would try to ensure all parts of the tourism chain, from taxi drivers to tour guides and luxury hotel owners were educated on Chinese travel wishes and customs.

Spain has even already put on some bullfights where the bull was not killed at the end, to appease Chinese tourists who do not like blood.

Tour company Marly Camino, which offers high-end walking packages on the Way of St. James, a pilgrimage route to a cathedral in northern Spain, has seen an increase in enquiries from Asian tourists from Singapore and the Philippines, but said there was only one official Chinese-speaking tour guide in the region.

"There's the cultural barrier too, the etiquette is a little different. If we're going to be receiving that kind of client we want to be in the loop with how you treat that kind of client and what they expect," said co-director Samantha Sacchi Muci.

Marly Camino therefore plans to create packages for Chinese agencies to directly market to tourists to side-step the language barrier, saying it needs such agencies as an intermediary to help crack the market.

Tourism watchers at the ITB in Berlin said Europe's beach resorts could follow the example of the Maldives, among the top five most popular destinations for Chinese tourists.

The islands made a conscious effort to attract arrivals from sun-wary China with island-hopping tours, night fishing and snorkelling when arrivals from Europe collapsed after the deadly Indian Ocean tsunami in 2004.

"Forty years ago, when Germans and Brits first started coming to Spain and Greece, they were a strange race too," said Martin Buck, who helps organise the ITB, the world's largest travel and tourism fair.

"But Spain and Greece used the chance to make those visitors into an important pillar of their economies. Why shouldn't they do the same with the Chinese?" — Reuters

Bieber ‘under the weather’, but expects to perform

Posted: 08 Mar 2013 07:04 AM PST

March 08, 2013

US singer Justin Timberlake performs during the BRIT Awards, celebrating British pop music, at the O2 Arena in London February 20, 2013. — Reuters picLONDON, March 8 — Canadian pop star Justin Bieber was feeling "a little under the weather" today, a day after collapsing on stage, but plans to perform the last of four concerts at London's O2 Arena, a spokesman said.

Bieber, 19, suffered from shortness of breath during his performance and, after a 20-minute break during which he was given oxygen by doctors, he completed his set. The "Boyfriend" singer was later taken to hospital.

"Justin has been released from the hospital after a check-up and while he's feeling a little under the weather, he's planning on going ahead with tonight's show," the spokesman said in an emailed response to questions.

Bieber messaged his 35 million Twitter followers overnight that he was "getting better" and posted a photograph on web service Instagram of him lying shirtless on a hospital bed, wearing earphones and smiling.

The pop singer was not suffering from any health issues before the show, a spokeswoman said yesterday.

It was not the first time Bieber has collapsed on stage. He suffered concussion during a concert in Paris last June after falling into a glass wall.

The London leg of Bieber's sold-out "Believe" world tour has not been without its problems.

On Tuesday, the first night at London's O2 Arena, Bieber angered fans by turning up on stage nearly two hours late, blaming technical issues for the delay.

After completing the London part of his tour, he is due to travel to Lisbon for two gigs on March 11 and 12. — Reuters

Russian police detain several Pussy Riot supporters

March 08, 2013

Russian police officers detain a supporter of jailed members of the punk group Pussy Riot during a protest calling for their release, in central Moscow March 8, 2013. – Reuters picMOSCOW, March 8 — Russian police detained several activists protesting today against the incarceration of the punk rockers Pussy Riot in a demonstration timed to take place on International Women's Day.

The street-art collective Voina (War) said on its blog that around 10 people were taken away by the riot police at a small demonstration in support of Maria Alyokhina, 24, and Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, 23, the jailed band members.

Moscow police told Reuters that people had been detained, but declined to say how many. A Reuters Television cameraman saw four people led away to police cars.

The protest was designed as a one-person demonstration for which no permit is required. Activists took turns in front of the Federal Penitentiary Service building holding posters demanding freedom for Alyokhina and Tolokonnikova.

All the band members, including the since freed Yekaterina Samutsevich, 30, belonged to Voina.

Russian media reported that the arrests were made when other people started holding up posters.

Voina said that after the detentions the police allowed the one-person demonstration to continue.

Alyokhina and Tolokonnikova are serving two-year sentences after being convicted in August of hooliganism motivated by religious hatred when performing an anti-Kremlin "prayer" early last year at Moscow's main Russian Orthodox cathedral.

Samutsevich was released in October after her lawyer argued that she had not taken part in the performance because she was seized by guards before she could start playing her guitar.

Alyokhina has been refused early release and Tolokonnikova has just requested one, Russian media reported. When asked yesterday whether the two should be paroled, President Vladimir Putin declined to comment.

"It's not up to me, but it is a thing of procedures and applicable legislation," Putin said, according to Russian media.

He said he does not remember commenting about the Pussy Riot case before.

"I don't remember, perhaps I commented, but today I don't want to," he said.

In October, Putin called the Pussy Riot sentencing fair.

"They wanted this, they got it," he told the NTV television channel in an interview then.

Last week, another one-person demonstration was organised by mothers, wives, sisters, and female friends of opposition members jailed after the protests on the eve of Putin's inauguration in May. No detentions were reported. – Reuters

Merit vs self-entitlement

Posted: 07 Mar 2013 04:28 PM PST

March 08, 2013

A geology graduate turned writer, Khairie Hisyam Aliman enjoys stating the obvious... occasionally in writing. He is still figuring out how to write a proper bio of himself.

MARCH 8 — The line separating the two is very often blur.

For the sake of discussion, let's assume that I'm a third-generation owner of a company contracted to run a commercial frog farm.

Let's say my grandfather, who started the company, had noble intentions to cater to the demand for frogs in the Western dining industry. The frog farm owner would pay a fair remuneration in exchange for my grandfather running the farm well based on expectations and deliverables outlined in the contract.

My grandfather, with his passion for frog farming, was very dedicated and his passion rubbed off onto his management team. The farm was well-run and well-maintained, and the expectations in the contract were met, maybe even surpassed on occasion. This meant that the farm produced the best-quality frogs in the market, recorded good profit margins as a business and the farm owners were very happy with the company.

In this case, my grandfather's company deserved the remuneration in exchange for good management of the frog farm. Excellent performance also built goodwill and trust with the owners.

When my grandfather passed the reins of the company to my father, my father continued existing practices yet also sought to do some things in his own way. At this time, the frog-farming industry boomed.

Globally, a researcher estimated in 2009 that between 180 million and over a billion frogs are harvested each year, with demand driving numerous species to extinction due to the fact that most of the demand were met by wild frog populations.

Hence it was a bigger industry in my father's time then when the company was founded. Logically, the frog farm prospered further and recorded even bigger profit margins. The owners grew richer given these conditions.

But maybe the management team in my father's time did not share my grandfather's passion. The management quality began dropping. "Cost-efficiency" entered the picture and the company began finding ways to cut costs in order to increase its own profit margins — maybe using poorer-quality fences to keep predators out and frogs in, skimping on artificial frog-feeding necessities, poor maintenance of landscape and pond design, etc. Maybe corruption crept in, with some of the staff beginning to embezzle money and misusing company resources.

This hurt the quality of frogs churned out by the farm and the farm lost some portion of its frog market share to competitors offering higher quality frogs. The frog farm's performance as a business deteriorated. Correspondingly, the owners' profit margins reduced.

However, the business was still profitable albeit less optimally, so the owners took no action given the goodwill and trust from my grandfather's time.

Then the reins passed to me. By this time, the corner-cutting and corruption practices are considered normal and are at rampant levels. My grandfather's frog-farming vision was lost and the management is performing poorly. Instead of trying our best to perform well, my management team is on auto-pilot, just going through the motions.

The frog-farming business is barely keeping its nose above water and the owners have unhappily noticed. Instead of high-quality frogs, the farm now produces overpriced, disease-ridden frogs due to poor feeding, which also caused cannibalism among the frogs, lowering population and resulting in lower total frog output. The farm's financial records are full of discrepancies and it is slowly losing customers who turn to other frog suppliers offering better-quality frogs for fairer prices.

In this scenario, naturally the owners would seriously consider terminating my company's longstanding contract and hiring another management company to operate the frog farm.

Can I cry foul and call the owners ungrateful? Riding upon the goodwill and trust gained during my grandfather's time, can I demand loyalty from the farm owners and tell them to continue rewarding me for my grandfather's excellence while delivering sub-standard performance myself?

The simple answer is no.

The frog farm is a business and it must continuously look to the future in order to continue surviving. It would be within the owners' rights to ensure their business is running optimally and gaining maximum profits. Delivering what you are hired for does not equal a debt of gratitude on the owners' part, and the moment the performance falls short, the owners would be crazy not to act in order to rectify the situation.

This means goodwill and trust earned by my grandfather's time means nothing. While the company endured, the people running it have changed — the management is only as good as the actual people staffing it and what they can deliver now, not yesterday.

The owners would be out of business if they do not fire my team and hire another operating company that can deliver better performance. As for my management team, it's up to us to improve ourselves and perform to the owners' expected standards.

It's about results and doing what is in the owners' best interests, because at the end of the day it's their frog farm at stake.

Nothing personal, just business.

Disclaimer: The writer's family has never operated a commercial frog farm and no frogs were harmed in the writing of this article.

Information in times of conflict

Posted: 07 Mar 2013 03:57 PM PST

March 08, 2013

Zan Azlee is a documentary filmmaker, journalist, writer, New Media practitioner and lecturer. He runs Fat Bidin Media www.fatbidin.com

MARCH 8 — When conflict happens anywhere around the world, notice that conspiracy theories start coming alive. Allegations of propaganda and spin also start to emerge.

For example, when 9/11 happened, many people believed (and some still do!) that President Bush Jr planned the attacks so he could continue to hold on to power.

This isn't much different in Malaysia with the case of the invasion of Sabah by armed terrorists from the southern Philippines.

A conspiracy theory speculating that the government of the day is actually creating this whole incident to create panic before the elections is one.

Another conspiracy theory that is making the rounds in the media is that the opposition had planned the invasion all along together with the terrorists.

Then there are the dozens or so accusations of fabrication and manipulation of information released to the public.

Remember the first police deaths? First, the news said that they were killed by a mortar. Then, it was said that they were shot by snipers.

A few days ago, Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein and Defence Minister Zahid Hamidi released pictures of the dead terrorists killed in an operation.

It took them a long time to release the photos and, of course, more conspiracy theories cropped up regarding the photos.

Why did it take so long to release it to the public? Are those real terrorists? Was it a staged photograph? It's quite funny actually.

The point being here is that the public will always be the public. They will be scared, curious, angry, emotional, and much more.

You can't blame them because, to be honest, the invasion of Sabah is a very terrifying thing to happen. No one wants to feel insecure in his or her own country.

So what do we do with all this rumour mongering? Well, for one, the authorities will have to be prompt and honest when it comes to releasing information.

And the media has a very important task too. It needs to disseminate information truthfully, promptly and efficiently.

But, most importantly, the media (i.e. journalists) needs to verify and countercheck the information to make sure what they are reporting is accurate.

It is not enough just to cover a press conference, get several quotes or soundbites from a government official and make it into a report. That's not journalism.

Verify it. Go on the ground and meet eyewitnesses and local villagers to see if the information given during the press conference is consistent with reality.

That is the difference between being a journalist and a government mouthpiece. That is the difference that will make the media more credible.

But do remember that the Malaysian media is just that — Malaysian. And being Malaysian, it needs to be loyal to Malaysia.

By that, I mean being loyal to Malaysians. The lives of our security forces are at stake as they are true heroes defending our people and our land.

Criticise and question the actions and policies that are being made so the Malaysian public know what is being done in their name.

And, hopefully, this will allow the authorities to keep themselves in check to ensure that what they are doing is the right thing.

One thing is for sure. The sovereignty and security of Malaysia and its people is of the utmost importance. Those who threaten it will be dealt with accordingly.
