Man United assistant manager Phelan leaves club

Posted: 24 May 2013 08:55 AM PDT

May 24, 2013

MANCHESTER, May 24 — Manchester United assistant manager Mike Phelan left the Premier League champions today as new manager David Moyes prepared to make his own coaching appointments.

Former United player Phelan is departing along with goalkeeping coach Eric Steele ahead of the arrival of Moyes, who takes over from the retired Alex Ferguson on July 1.

"I would like to put on record the club's thanks for everything Mike and Eric have done," Moyes said in a statement released by United.

"I will be looking to appoint my own members of coaching staff at some point in the future, however, I'd like to take this opportunity to give them both our best wishes for their future careers."

Phelan was promoted by Ferguson to the role of assistant manager in 2008 having served as first-team coach since 2001. Steele joined United as first-team goalkeeping coach in 2008. — Reuters

Gibraltar gets UEFA membership at last

Posted: 24 May 2013 08:33 AM PDT

May 24, 2013

LONDON, May 24 — Gibraltar was finally accepted as a member of European football's governing body UEFA today, allowing their national team and clubs to enter to take part in international competition.

UEFA's annual Congress voted in favour of a motion to allow the tiny British colony to become their 54th member.

Gibraltar, which was granted provisional membership last October, first applied for UEFA membership in 1999 but had faced fierce opposition from Spain.

In the past, Spain have threatened to boycott any competition in which teams from Gibraltar take part.

"This is a momentous moment for us," Gareth Latin, president of the Gibraltar FA, told the UEFA Congress. "It means we can now begin the next chapter of Gibraltar football.;"

Gibraltar's case was strengthened in 2011 by a Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) ruling that UEFA have to consider its membership.

Their teams will first feature in the qualifying competitions for the 2014 European under-17 and under-19 championships.

Gibraltar have been drawn against England, Armenia and Ireland in the under-17 qualifiers and Croatia, Czech Republic and Cyprus in the under-19 tournaments.

Their first full international competition is likely to be the qualifiers for Euro 2016.

Spain still claims sovereignty over Gibraltar after it was ceded to Britain under the 1713 Treaty of Utrecht.

An edict from the Consejo Superior de Deportes to all sports federations in Spain says they should block any membership application from organisations in Gibraltar. — Reuters

Posted: 24 May 2013 08:45 AM PDT

May 24, 2013

LONDON, May 24 — Adidas has launched a new football cleat (or football boot if you prefer) that the company claims will revolutionise your game, increase agility, protect you from injury and give you more energy, all while tracking your fitness stats.

The Adidas Nitrocharge. — Pic courtesy of AdidasThe Adidas Nitrocharge features a yellow strip on the forefoot, dubbed Energysling, which is a high-elastic upper element for added agility in your turns and sidecuts. Also, the shoe features the Energypulse on the forefront sole, which Adidas says enhances push-off and gives you greater energy returns for your runs.

Other technical features include the Sprintframe outsole with TRAXION 2.0 stud placement, which balances traction, stability and light weight. The boot also features a protection mesh layer around the foot and protection pads around the most sensitive tackle zones such as the Achilles tendon.

Plus like the Adidas f50, the Nitrocharge also includes a dedicated space for the brand's miCoach speed cell to track fitness stats such as speed, distance, and other data. The device pairs wirelessly with an iPhone or iPod to upload that data for analysis and sharing.

The cleat is available for purchase from June and will be worn by players Daniele De Rossi (A.S. Roma), Dani Alves (Barcelona), Ezequiel Lavezzi (Paris Saint Germain) and UEFA Champions League Finalist Javi Martinez (FC Bayern Munich). — AFP/Relaxnews

Most gymgoers wash their clothes once every third workout

Posted: 24 May 2013 08:41 AM PDT

May 24, 2013

LONDON, May 24 — When it comes to keeping gym clothes clean, a new survey finds that most people wash their clothes only after every third workout. Women are the worst offenders, the survey said, with just 21 per cent washing their gym clothes after each and every workout.

A new survey finds that most people wash their clothes only after every third workout. — AFP picA poll of 1,456 British fitness fans revealed that the top excuses included saving for a bigger wash, not having enough gym clothing, or just not being bothered. Still, 44 per cent said that working out next to smelly people negatively impacts their workout.

Even among those who washed their gym clothes after every use, a third revealed that they actually just meant that they switch out their workout top. The research, announced Wednesday, was conducted by sport and fitness retailer Sweatband.com.

"If you're out road running then I suppose delaying the wash isn't so bad," said Sweatband.com CEO Maz Darvish. "But if you're in the confines of a gym, you definitely need to respect the sensitivities of other gym users. I'm sure many of us have found ourselves next to somebody on the treadmill who doesn't exactly smell of roses. It's not a pleasant experience. Try not to be that person!" — AFP/Relaxnews

Take a bow-wow: Blind poodle wins Cannes’ ‘Palm Dog’

Posted: 24 May 2013 08:21 AM PDT

May 24, 2013

"Behind the Candelabra" poster. — AFP-Relaxnews picCANNES, May 24 — A white poodle that plays the part of a blind pet owned by Liberace in the flamboyant biopic "Behind the Candelabra" scooped glory today by winning the Palm Dog for canine talent at the Cannes Film Festival.

The pedigree pooch plays Baby Boy, whose sight problems bring a teenage dog trainer (played by Matt Damon) into the orbit of a predatory Liberace (Michael Douglas).

Eventually, their love affair breaks down in a welter of jealousy and drugs.

"He brought those boys together - he has a lot to answer for!" quipped Palm Dog organiser Toby Rose, unveiling the spoof awards at the festival's British pavilion.

But Guardian film critic Peter Bradshaw, one of a three-member jury, praised Baby Boy for exploring "a profound existential paradox."

Through its blindness, the poodle had shed light on the human condition, he argued.

The unnamed canine thesp was not in Cannes to pick up the cardboard collar prize.

The jury also awarded a special prize to a pampered pack of Hollywood hounds in "The Bling Ring," about teenage brats who break into celebrities' homes, stealing clothes and jewellery.

The real Palme d'Or (Golden Palm) is awarded on Sunday for the best film showing at the 12-day festival, the world's most prestigious movie showcase.

Last year's Palm Dog went to terriers Smurf and Ged, which featured in a British black comedy "Sightseers."

Anti-dog violence was castigated at this year's awards. A Mexican film, "Heli," shows brutality towards humans and to canines alike.

"Setting alight to a human being's penis, that's alright, but killing a dog, that's right out of order," said Bradshaw, in a joking reference to the stereotype that the Brits prioritise animals over their fellow Homo sapiens. — AFP-Relaxnews

One Direction sweeps awards for most popular social media stars

Posted: 24 May 2013 07:27 AM PDT

May 24, 2013

SINGAPORE, May 24 — British boy band One Direction has swept the inaugural awards recognising the most popular people in social media globally, coming top in four out of 10 categories at a star-studded ceremony in Singapore.

One Direction was named most popular music group, most popular UK musicians, most popular in the UK, and most popular in west Europe, at the Social Star Awards, but did not show up to collect their prizes, sending their thanks by videolink.

Canadian pop star Justin Bieber won the award for best solo artist, Selena Gomez for most popular actor, Ellen DeGeneres for top TV show, and Portuguese soccer player Cristiano Ronaldo for most popular sports star.

The awards highlight viral sensations and people who garner the most social media attention globally based on data from Singapore-based Starcount that tracks the social media activity of 1.7 billion people across 11 social media networks.

American actress Jessica Alba and "Entourage" star Jeremy Piven hosted yesterday night's ceremony that ended a 24-hour marathon of 288 online awards awarded in categories ranging from best finance brand to top Indonesia actor.

"It is all about the most popular people on the planet ... Everyday we are sharing, liking, viewing, tweeting and what our awards show does is celebrate the superstars of social media," Starcount CEO Paul Morrison told reporters ahead of the awards.

Many of the award winners were absent from the prize giving but the void was filled with live performances by South Korean rapper Psy, American singer Carly Rae Jepsen, SkyBlu from electronic dance duo LMFAO, and US rockers Aerosmith.

R&B singer-songwriter Eric Benet hailed the impact of social media.

"If you plan on being relevant and have a sustainable career in this day and age social media is about as important as TV was ... in the 1950s," he told Reuters television.

"Way back in the '90s when I started back in the music industry we would have to rely on our PR department and our record label but now in this day and age we, the artist, can take command of our career. It's awesome." — Reuters

AMK selar Presiden PAS kerana mencerca calon PKR semasa kempen PRU13

Posted: 24 May 2013 02:29 AM PDT

May 24, 2013

PETALING JAYA, 24 Mei — Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin (gambar) menyelar Presiden PAS Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang kerana mencerca calon PKR semasa tempoh berkempen Pilihan Raya 2013 lalu tanpa membawa sebarang bukti.

"Nak jadi calon macam mana edar pil kuda?

From a humble leader to a giant killer!".

Idris akan saman PKR berhubung dakwaan kurung 24 petugas SPR pada hari mengundi

Posted: 24 May 2013 01:31 AM PDT

May 24, 2013

— Bernama

I’m afraid, really afraid!

Posted: 23 May 2013 06:08 PM PDT

May 24, 2013

Zan Azlee is a documentary filmmaker, journalist, writer, New Media practitioner and lecturer. He runs Fat Bidin Media www.fatbidin.com

MAY 24 — I'm going to be honest and say outright that I'm afraid of the recent turn of events in our country, with the numerous arrests being made and copies of newspapers being confiscated.

But it's a complicated situation that everything is in right now. And I am seriously tired of all these complicated situations that we've been in since the election.

Yes, the election has come and gone. And yes, Barisan Nasional (BN) won and Pakatan Rakyat (PR) lost. It's the worst faring by BN and the best by PR.

BN was quick to swear in their prime minister, while PR was quick to declare the election process being a fraud and not recognise the results.

And since they won the popular vote, PR leaders started organising rallies all around the country, knowing full well that the turnout would be huge.

Yada yada yada. And that's when all hell broke loose in the BN camp.

It started out with racist statements being made by the BN camp which rightly angered not just the PR camp, but many Malaysians, me included.

And now, the cavalry has been set loose. Four people have been detained, Adam Adli, Haris Ibrahim, Tian Chua and Tamrin Ghafar, for sedition.

The cavalry also went on a spree around Malaysia, confiscating PR newspapers Harakah, Suara Keadilan and Rocket from newsstands, and even from the back of the distributor's lorries.

Any sane, logical and rational human being will realise that this is a wrong step to take by the ruling government if they want to improve their standing with the rakyat.

I dare say that no matter how hardcore your support is for the ruling party, it has to be very difficult to justify this sort of action in this day and age.

It may have worked in 1987 when they carried out Ops Lalang where 106 individuals were arrested and three newspapers were banned. But it doesn't work now.

The rakyat are not as susceptible and gullible as they were decades ago when information was limited and not accessible as it is today.

Some may argue that it's all legal, and the PR camp and the activists knew the consequences when they did what they did.

Of course they would have known the consequences of their actions. But I feel that this is hardly an argument since there really is no other way to express what they have to say.

Aside from the legal aspects (of which its ethics can be debated), I really see no wrong in whatever they have done. Not even the sedition part.

I may not agree to violence as a form of overthrowing a government, but I agree to the fact that they have a right to say what they want to say.

And I definitely agree that the rakyat have a right to gather and assemble to express their beliefs as this is one of the basic tenets of democracy.

So when I said at the start of my article that I am afraid about the recent turn of events that have occurred in our country, I wasn't afraid of the current situation.

What I am afraid of is the consequences of the actions taken by the ruling party in handling the situation, and whether they realise it or not.

Keadilan’s successes in the 13th general election

Posted: 23 May 2013 05:47 PM PDT

May 24, 2013

Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad is the state assemblyman for Seri Setia and Parti Keadilan Rakyat's Communications Director.

MAY 24 — In the immediate aftermath of the 13th general election, there are many things that Keadilan leaders nationwide are rightly preoccupied about: the blatant electoral abuses by Barisan Nasional and the Election Commission; the vicious racist cycle being perpetuated by Najib Razak's "balanced" administration and some soul-searching on how to improve ourselves moving forward.

It is significant that in spite of the populist cash handouts and an expensive public relations campaign by Umno-BN, it was Pakatan Rakyat that won the popular vote. Let us not dismiss the magnitude of this: it clearly shows the differences between the two political coalitions in Malaysia today.

Umno, and by extension BN, is still stuck in the past. Umno's ethos is still of an authoritarian, rural party that it is increasingly if not totally out of touch with the product of the NEP that it created: a younger, diverse and urban Malay community that is fast becoming comfortable, indeed melding with Malaysian society as a whole.

The race-based component parties too are stuck with their assigned roles that originated from the divide-and-rule policies of the colonial period. The MCA and MIC presidents largely restrict themselves (and also get treated by Umno) as modern-era Chinese and Indian kapitans respectively.

Originally multiracial parties such as Gerakan or PPP have become largely irrelevant, squeezed by the racial ethos of Umno-BN on one side and the success of Pakatan's non-racial approach in the urban areas on the other.

While Najib branded the swing against Umno-BN as a "Chinese tsunami", Keadilan is the best evidence that it was anything but. The 14-year-old party has emerged from the election as the only party that won at least a seat in all states of the federation and the Federal Territories — from Perlis to Sabah. Indeed, Keadilan has the largest number of state assemblymen in Sabah. Our MPs and state assemblymen now consist of Malays, Chinese, Indians, Iban, Orang Hulu and Kadazans.

Keadilan has continued the trend of making mixed constituencies — once the mainstay of Umno-BN — its stronghold. Continuing the development from the 2011 Sarawak state election, the party has continued to make inroads in east Malaysia, largely overcoming its previous, underserved reputation as being a "Peninsular party." Nevertheless, the east Malaysian Bumiputera segment remains the biggest hurdle for Keadilan and Pakatan.

While the party has one less parliamentary seat than in 2008, it has increased its total votes at the federal level from 1.5 million to 2.3 million, or 18.6 per cent to 20.4 per cent of the popular votes nationwide.

The quality of representatives has improved significantly compared to 2008. More importantly, youthful leadership — both from the 2008 batch such as Nurul Izzah Anwar, Sim Tze Tzin and S. Kesavan — as well as from the recent election like Rafizi Ramli, Darell Leiking and Shamsul Iskandar — continues to feature strongly among both elected representatives and senior office holders of the party. This bodes well for the future of the party.

In addition, Keadilan staggered its announcement of the party's candidates. Many of those who were announced early were able to establish themselves in their constituencies and emerged successful in the elections. This approach should be replicated more extensively in future polls.

Keadilan and Pakatan can also take pride in the fact that we largely set the agenda of the 13th general election — both by articulating bold policy ideas that captured the imagination of the voters and exposing corruption scandals that had largely been ignored by the mainstream media. This placed Umno-BN on the defensive to the point that the ruling coalition had to delay the publication of its manifesto and eventually copy many of Pakatan's proposals.

The success of establishing a party-related think-tank, Institut Rakyat, advised by many formidable corporate, academic and activist figures, also shows that the party is serious in developing its policy credentials. It was launched too close to the elections to perhaps have an immediate impact but one is confident that it will play a major role in future elections.

The party has shown itself to be Malaysia's most successful multiracial party in history. This is despite being attacked by many as a temporary phenomenon or the "weakest link" in Pakatan; 2013 has proven how wrong this all is.

The key for us now is to move forward and remain united, to build upon our strengths and iron out any weaknesses both within Keadilan and in Pakatan.

While many party supporters may be disheartened by the election results, let us not forget what we have achieved. The road ahead will be long and difficult but ultimately what we're fighting for is a better country for everyone.

The campaign for the next general election and indeed for the future of Malaysia has just begun.

* This is the personal opinion of the columnist.
