In its latest product, Specialty Chicken, there's no pizza crust in sight.

Instead, the US chain has replaced it with breaded, white boneless chicken pieces that are then topped with sauce, cheese and other assorted pizza toppings.

Sound familiar? KFC pulled a similar stunt when it debuted the extreme Double Down sandwich, replacing sandwich buns with breaded, deep-fried chicken filets.

Domino's Specialty Chicken comes in four flavours – Crispy Bacon and Tomato, Spicy Jalapeno-Pineapple, Classic Hot Buffalo and Sweet BBQ Bacon – and sells for US$5.99 (RM19.41).

In a press release, the pizza chain pledged to continue to show that it's a "legitimate player in the chicken business".

Meanwhile, KFC's parent company YUM! Brands is quietly testing out a premium version of its flagship chicken brand with Super Chix in Texas, a chicken sandwich shop that is widely seen as an aggressive strike against Chick-fil-A. – AFP/Relaxnews, April 16, 2014.

Top seed Dominika Cibulkova finally got on court today and registered a crushing 6-1, 6-3 win over Turkey's Pemra Özgen in another rain-interrupted day at the BMW Malaysian Open.

The Slovakian world number 10's game was delayed due to a late afternoon downpour but she sped through her match in 60 minutes to set up a second-round clash against Taiwan's Hsieh Su-Wei at the Royal Selangor Golf Club in Kuala Lumpur.

"Quite happy with my game, I didn't let her play at all in the first set and was feeling quite good. I was really aggressive and didn't give her any chance to play," said the 25-year-old who is seeking her fifth career WTA Tour title.

Meanwhile, sixth-seeded Zarina Diyas was the first to book her place in the last eight, her first appearance in a quarter-finals of a WTA event in two years.

The 20-year-old Kazakhstan starlet brushed aside Italian qualifier Giulia Gatto-Monticone 6-1, 6-4 in 72 minutes.

"I played well today considering the tough conditions, I am happy with my game. It was difficult at the start of the second set as Giulia played more aggressive. I changed my strategy by playing more angle balls," she said.

Fourth-seeded Austrian Patricia Mayr-Achleitner is also through to the quarter-finals after a 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 victory over Montenegro's Danka Kovinic.

Malaysia's capital Kuala Lumpur often experiences heavy rain that has marred play on all three days so far.

The tournament was also dealt an early setback when former world number one Venus Williams pulled out, reportedly due to a throat infection. – AFP, April 16, 2014.

Nadal, Federer rush to victories in Monte Carlo

Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer rushed into the third round at the Monte Carlo Masters today, with both posting quick opening victories.

Top seed Nadal, champion at eight of the last nine editions, spent 72 minutes in smothering any upset hopes of Russian Teimuraz Gabashvili, who got off to a shock 3-1 lead before Spain's king of clay reeled him in for a 6-4, 6-1 success.

Federer, seeded fourth at a Masters 1000 event that he has never won, delivered a 6-1, 6-2 thrashing to fellow veteran Radek Stepanek.

Federer's rout in 52 minutes was seven minutes longer than another easy victory by holder Novak Djokovic a day earlier.

"I was able to get a lot of returns back into play," said Federer. "On clay, when you have the upper hand from the baseline, it's kind of hard to get out of it.

"I think that's how it was for Radek today. I had a good start to both sets, then I was solid on my own service games.

"The next thing you know, you're in the lead and you can hit freely. It was clearly a good match to start my claycourt campaign."

The Swiss will next face off for a quarter-final spot tomorrow when he takes on Lukas Rosol.

The Czech booked his spot over Frenchman Michael Llodra 6-4, 6-4.

"It's surprising the way he came through, but then again, we know he can play good tennis," Federer said of Rosol, "He's dangerous. He takes big cuts at the ball.

"On clay, on a slower surface, sometimes you get more chances to hit the ball big."

Federer improved to 14-2 over Stepanek, 35, whose last victory in the series came in Rome six years ago.

Federer, 32, swept the first set in 22 minutes and faced his only spot of bother as he saved a pair of break points in the sixth game of the second set.

The winner was aided by five Stepanek double-faults, with Federer breaking four times.

The Swiss won an ATP Tour-leading 25th match of the season.

Nadal steadied after going down early against Gabashvili, with the Spaniard improving to 49-2 at the event.

The top seed won six games in a row on his way to claiming the opening set and reaching 4-0 in the second.

A break by his opponent for 4-1 only delayed the inevitable, with Nadal getting the break straight back for 5-1 before taking the win on a first match point a game later.

Nadal will now line up against Andreas Seppi after the Italian defeated Pablo Andujar 7-6 (7/5), 5-7, 6-4.

Australian Open champion and third seed Stanislas Wawrinka was taking on Croatian Marin Cilic.

Canadian eighth seed Milos Raonic duplicated his best showing in the principality with a 6-7 (4/7), 6-2, 6-1 defeat of Taiwan's Yen Lu-Hsun.

Italian tenth seed Fabio Fognini beat Roberto Bautista Agut of Spain 7-6 (8/6), 6-4. – AFP, April 16, 2014.

Study shows casual pot use causes brain abnormalities in the young

Young marijuana users may experience changes which are potentially harmful to their brains. – AFP pic, April 16, 2014. Young marijuana users may experience changes which are potentially harmful to their brains. – AFP pic, April 16, 2014.Young, casual marijuana smokers experience potentially harmful changes to their brains, with the drug altering regions of the mind related to motivation and emotion, researchers found.

The study to be published today in the Journal of Neuroscience differs from many other pot-related research projects that are focused on chronic, heavy users of cannabis.

The collaborative effort between Northwestern University's medical school, Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School showed a direct correlation between the number of times users smoked and abnormalities in the brain.

"What we're seeing is changes in people who are 18 to 25 in core brain regions that you never, ever want to fool around with," said co-senior study author Dr. Hans Beiter, professor of psychiatry and behavioural sciences at Northwestern University.

In particular, the study identified changes to the nucleus accumbens and the nucleus amygdala, regions of the brain that are key to regulating emotion and motivation, in marijuana users who smoke between one and seven joints a week.

The researchers found changes to the volume, shape and density of those brain regions. But more studies are needed to determine how those changes may have long-term consequences and whether they can be fixed with abstinence, Beiter said.

"Our hypothesis from this early work is that these changes may be an early sign of what later becomes amotivation, where people aren't focused on their goals," he said.

The study, which was funded in part by the National Institute on Drug Abuse and the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy, comes as access to pot is expanding following 2012 votes in Washington state and Colorado to legalize its recreational use. The drug remains illegal under federal law.

Medical pot is allowed in 20 US states.

Pot legalisation advocates make the argument that marijuana is safer than alcohol a central part of their campaigns.

Other research has found drinking alcohol alters the brain, Beiter said. But while researchers do not know exactly how the mental rewiring seen in pot users affects their lives, the study shows it physically changes the brain in ways that differ from drinking, he said.

This latest study fits with other research showing marijuana use has significant effects on young people because their brains are still developing, and Beiter said he has become convinced that marijuana should only be used by people under 30 if they need it to manage pain from a terminal illness. – Reuters, April 16, 2014.

Chinese herb beats drug at rheumatoid arthritis, shows study

The herb, known as the thunder god vine, has long been used in China to treat rheumatoid arthritis, which typically strikes hand and foot joints. – AFP/Relaxnews pic, April 16, 2014. A Chinese herb called thunder god vine works better than a widely-prescribed pharmaceutical drug at easing rheumatoid arthritis, a study published earlier this week said.

The herb has long been used in China to treat the potentially crippling autoimmune disease, which typically strikes hand and foot joints.

It is known in Mandarin as lei gong teng and to botanists as Tripterygium wilfordii Hook F.

Extracts of the herb have already fired the interest of drug laboratories as they contain hundreds of compounds, including intriguing molecules called diterpenoids which are believed to ease inflammation and immune response.

In a study published in the British journal BMJ Open, Chinese researchers recruited 207 patients with rheumatoid arthritis and gave them either the herb, the drug methotrexate (marketed as Rheumatrex or Trexall) or a combination of the two.

After six months, the patients were given a doctor's assessment and were also asked if they felt any change.

The benchmark for improvement is called the ACR 50 – named after the American College of Rheumatology – which indicates a 50% improvement in the tally of tender or swollen joints and other criteria such as pain and disability.

Of the 174 who completed the trial, 55% of those on the herb attained ACR 50, compared to 46% among those treated with methotrexate alone.

But the biggest gain was among the group which took the herb-methotrexate combination: nearly 77% of them achieved the ACR 50 measure of improvement.

Previous – but small-scale – trials involving thunder god vine have found it scored well against a harmless lookalike called a placebo and an anti-inflammatory called sulfasalazine.

But some of that research also flagged potential side effects from the herb.

The new study said that side effects this time were roughly similar among the herb and methodrexate users, being mainly gastrointestinal upsets. Among the herb group, some of the women experienced irregular menstruation.

The investigation, led by Xuan Zhang, a rheumatologist at the Peking Union Medical College Hospital in Beijing, acknowledged several limitations.

One was that the doctors who treated the patients, and the patients themselves, knew what medication was being taken, although outside assessors were brought in to verify the results.

Another was that the trial was too short to see if the herb arrested progression of the disease rather than eased the symptoms.

A third was that the dose of methotrexate was limited to 12.5 milligrams a week. "This is standard in Asia, although it is common in the West to use higher doses," the paper said. – AFP/Relaxnews, April 16, 2014.

Catch the Rising Son this weekend

Posted: 15 Apr 2014 11:41 PM PDT

BY NICK CHOO
April 16, 2014

This weekend as Christians around the world celebrate Easter, a group of performers will be starring in a stage musical appropriately titled the Rising Son.

Written and composed by Paul Michael Baker, the original musical is set in Malaya in 1941 to 1945 during the Japanese occupation, and is a two-hour tale that tells of love, hope and forgiveness in a time of great difficulty.

The show is produced by the Grace Community Centre in Petaling Jaya. Baker, who came up with the script, music and lyrics as well as musical arrangement for a 25-piece orchestra, explains that he wanted to develop a show that would inspire people to forgive others.

"There is a perception that all entertainment put on by churches is designed to "pressure sell" you into converting to Christianity," says the founder of Kuala Lumpur Youth Jazz Orchestra (KLYJO) and founding principal of the Bentley Music Academy in Mutiara Damansara.

"So I wanted to develop something with a much gentler but nonetheless moving message so that audiences, while entertained, will still be able to question the way that forgiveness or unforgiveness play a part in their lives, and hopefully make choices to increase the former."

In the director's chair is Boh Cameronian Arts Award nominee Nell Ng, the artistic director of Pan Productions, which has produced crowd favourites such as Cabaret and The Producers and is currently in preparations for a staging of Stephen Sondheim's Merrily We Roll Along next month.

The 70-member cast is made up of both experienced performers and newcomers, many of whom will be on stage for the first time.

On what inspired Baker to write the Rising Son, he credits the original idea to a friend, Kelvin Ooi.

"This year marks the 100th anniversary of the commencement of World War II," he adds.

"But to write a musical that showed the full force of Japanese brutality and portrayed the reality of the hardships faced on a daily basis by the Malay population during that period would hardly be classified as entertainment."

Therefore, historical accuracy had to take a backseat in order for the message of forgiveness to be effectively conveyed. "The reality has, by necessity, been considerably sweetened," he says.

Explaining that two of the main characters own coffee shops, and that the show starts off with a rousing, jaunty number titled The Best Coffee in Town, he adds, "In reality, there were no coffee shops overflowing with an abundance of food and drinks as portrayed in the opening song.

Indeed, my research shows that some Chinese housewives were recorded as being forced to search for mice and other vermin in order to put food on the table.

"There were no church bells, racial harmony was almost non-existent, and there were few, if any, missionaries," Baker says, in reference to another central character, Father Pat, who questions his purpose when the townsfolk don't take him seriously and finds his faith challenged when he is embroiled in a brutal crime.

Baker, who hails from England, was brought up in the theatre and has served as musical director for over 30 musicals and oratorios. "I love shows with good tunes and a variety of rhythms," he says.

"Rodgers and Hammerstein (Sound of Music), Gershwin (Porgy and Bess), Cole Porter (Kiss Me Kate), Boubil and Schoenberg (Les Miserables) and, in particular, Jerry Hermann (Hello, Dolly!) have always inspired me, so I tried to bring some of that melodic magic into the songs while retaining the appropriate emotions.

"I also like shows with full orchestras. To me, it adds to the whole magic of the experience of going to a Broadway or West End show, so I wrote and scored the music with that in mind from the start."

As for what he hopes audiences will take away from the show, Baker says, "Individual forgiveness can help heal marriages, families, friendships and businesses. Collective or national forgiveness can literally help avoid wars. I've realised that forgiveness, quite apart from being morally correct and useful, is very good for the forgiver. It makes you feel much better about yourself and is almost certainly much better for your health. I'd seriously recommend it to anyone as an active choice."

The Rising Son runs on April 19 & 20, 7pm, at Grace Convention Centre, Plaza Mayang, Taman Mayang, Petaling Jaya. Admission and seating are free. – April 16, 2014.

"Descent", which is due for an October 14 release from Thomas Dunne Books and St Martin's Press, revolves around Lilly Caul, one of Kirkman's original characters who returns from Bonansinga's 2012 novel "The Walking Dead: The Road to Woodbury".

Known in the TV series as Lilly Chambler, Caul helps stage a rebellion against the leader of a fortified town, Woodbury, when it turns out that the post-apocalyptic haven is ruled by a merciless despot.

"Descent" sees Caul head back to Woodbury and engage in a rebuilding effort, reports Entertainment Weekly, and Robert Kirkman gave his blessing to the new story arc.

– Bernama, 16 April, 2014.

Zahida Rafik gagal ketepikan saman bekas pemandu peribadi

Posted: 16 Apr 2014 02:57 AM PDT

April 16, 2014

Dunia in sifatnya pinjaman saja. Segala-galanya bukan milik kita.

– 16 April, 2014.
