Norwegians plan to launch world’s first Arctic whisky

It's a poetic notion for plans that include transforming a former fish factory into a whisky distillery. But according to trade publication The Spirits Business, a Norwegian scientist and four friends hope to produce the world's first Arctic whisky on the island of Myken in northern Norway, using desalinated seawater from the Vestfjorden fjord.

They expect to produce the first few liters of Myken Whisky later this year.

Spirit makers are increasingly venturing into the Arctic to launch products sourced with pure glacial water – a marketing gimmick that evokes exclusivity, rarity and purity.

Siku Glacier Ice Vodka, for instance, (which means "ice" in Greenlandic) is made with glacial water that goes back 60,000 years.

Russian brand Polar Bear is likewise blended with melted glacial water. – AFP/Relaxnews, May 9, 2014.

Vettel switching chassis in bid to salvage title defence

Posted: 08 May 2014 08:48 AM PDT

May 08, 2014

Sebastian Vettel (pic) is switching to a different Red Bull chassis this weekend in a desperate bid to salvage his title defence after being outpaced by rivals Mercedes so far this year.

The four-time world champion said it was a move that was aimed at helping the team to understand why the German driver had languished behind his rivals, including new Red Bull team-mate, Australian Daniel Ricciardo.

"I think we concluded after China, where we were quite a little bit behind, to change the chassis," Vettel said.

"It is not a new chassis, it is an old one we used in testing in the winter and we have some experience with it.

"It is just to try everything we can."

Vettel explained that he was making the move for this weekend's Spanish Grand Prix in case car problems contributed to his recent struggles.

Although he finished on the podium in Malaysia, he was only sixth and fifth in the following races in Bahrain and China – and had to move aside for team-mate Ricciardo on both occasions.

Notably, when Red Bull confirmed Vettel would use a new chassis in Spain, the team suggested it was a scheduled move.

But Vettel said the decision was made after Shanghai as part of an effort to ensure every possible cause of his troubles was investigated.

He told reporters: "It is not unusual to change chassis generally, we decided to change back to an older chassis just to make sure that nothing is wrong." – AFP, May 8, 2014.

Alonso rules out podium for Ferrari in Spain

Posted: 08 May 2014 08:45 AM PDT

May 08, 2014

Fernando Alonso (pic) today ruled out thoughts of claiming another podium finish for Ferrari in this weekend's Spanish Grand Prix.

The team, however, was building up a 'slow recovery' after a mediocre start to the season and could recover the speed to join the championship scrap, the Spaniard said.

Just a few hours after hearing that the pace-setting Mercedes team believed that Ferrari were their main rivals, Alonso said he had no expectation of delivering another top-three finish, as in China last month.

"We will do our best," said the two-time world champion who won his and Ferrari's last race a year ago in front of his fellow-Spaniards.

"We know it will be a tough weekend, and you never know.

"It is sport, anything can happen, but today sitting here if I tell you I will fight for the podium, probably I will lie to you and I don't want to do so for all the people that are coming.

"We cannot start the weekend thinking to be on the podium or thinking to win the race. That will be creating wrong and false targets to everyone that will come here.

"We finished ninth and 10th in Bahrain and we did a podium in China because we put some things together that Sunday. So, it is not that we are in a position now that we will fight for the podium here."

Looking ahead, he stressed that he believed it was possible to catch Mercedes before they were beyond reach in the title race.

"We must do anything we can to close that gap and become competitive," he said. "That will not happen between one race and the next one.

"It will be a slow recovery and hopefully not too late when we become competitive in terms of points to fight for the championship. So let's do it race by race.

"China was a combination of things, and good luck to get that podium. Here in Barcelona is a good point to check how competitive we are, a circuit with different characteristics again and a circuit that will give us an answer or some of the parameters where we need to find some answers.

"Then there is Monaco, Canada, completely different circuits. We are in a moment of the championship and we need to ask many, many things in terms of how competitive we can be." – AFP, May 8, 2014.

Lashawn and 'master' Stevens Chan Kum Fai are out to educate Malaysians about the use of guide dogs for the visually impaired. – Pic courtesy of DID, May 8, 2014. Malaysia's first and only guide dog, Lashawn Chan, made its "debut" today in front of the press.

Dialogue in the Dark Malaysia (DID) today introduced Lashawn as part of its ongoing efforts to promote the "Dogs for Sight" campaign.

Stevens Chan Kum Fai, CEO and founder of DID, Save Ones Sight Mission Bhd (SOSM) and Glaucoma Society Malaysia (GSM) has been advocating the use of guide dogs for the visually impaired in Malaysia since 2012.

"In 2012, we held a press conference on the same matter which led to the initiative for permitting the use of guide dogs for the visually impaired being brought up as a topic of discussion during Parliament meetings," said Chan.

Lashawn, a professionally trained Labrador, was the star at today's event representing Malaysian's first ever guide dog permitted in the country.

Lashawn comes from a line of professional service dogs from Nanjing, China.

Like many of its breed, Lashawn was trained at the Nanjing Police Academy to learn, understand and take on its life-long professional role and responsibility as a service dog.   Upon reaching two years old and after training for more than a year, the guide dogs are deemed to be at the perfect stage to start a "partnership" consisting of the dog and its new master.

Lashawn was handpicked and partnered with Chan. Now, both are working together to advocate the "Dogs for Sight" campaign.

Lashawn proudly demonstrated its professional skills and abilities to guide and protect his master, Chan, weaving through the obstacles in Chan's path.

DID is committed to bridging the gap between the marginalised and society to facilitate social inclusion on a global basis.

DID's mission is to raise awareness and create tolerance for "otherness" in the general public, thereby overcoming barriers between the visual impaired and the general public.

Handshake strength reveals education, age, shows study

Simply shaking hands with a person can reveal how fast they're aging, their education level and even their future health, research suggests. – Reuters pic, May 8, 2014.Simply shaking hands with a person can reveal how fast they're aging, their education level and even their future health, research suggests. – Reuters pic, May 8, 2014.A handshake can tell a lot about a person. Researchers said yesterday the strength of someone's grip may reveal how fast they're aging, their education level – and even their future health.

The International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis researchers reviewed more than 50 published studies from around the world for their article in the journal PLOS ONE.

They found that people with more education at age 69 tended to grip just as strongly as less educated people at age 65, suggesting the latter were aging about four years faster.

"According to hand grip strength, people with high education... feel several years younger compared with people with lower education," study author Sergei Scherbov told AFP.

Another study the authors reviewed was done on more than a million Swedish adolescent males, whose handgrip strength was measured as part of an exam for military service.

Those with lower handgrip strength were significantly more likely to die earlier, have heart disease, be at higher risk of suicide and experience psychological problems.

Differences in health that correlated with handgrip strength could be seen across many of the studies, the researchers said.

"Low handgrip strength has been shown definitively to predict poor outcomes in a wide variety of mortality, morbidity, and other health outcomes," said the PLOS ONE study.

However, any educational and racial differences that could be parsed by handgrip tended to disappear as people reached their 90s.

The study was funded by the European Research Council as part of a grant to define new measures of aging based on people's characteristics, such as their longevity, health, disability status and other demographic factors. – AFP, May 8, 2014.

Canadian author, environmentalist Farley Mowat dies at 92

He was 92.

Mowat's work introduced millions of readers to the Canadian north, a vast, sparsely populated region few writers had explored in depth. He also campaigned for the need to protect wildlife and strongly opposed over-development by humans.

"I feel sorry for us because not only are we a bad animal, but we're most inevitably a doomed animal. Every species dies out. But our doom is here and now," he told an interviewer in 1998.

Harper said in a statement that Mowat would "be remembered as a passionate Canadian. His legacy will live on in the treasure of Canadian literature he leaves behind, which will remain a joy to both new and old fans around the world".

Mowat, who served as an officer in Italy in World War Two, came to prominence in 1952 with his first book, "People of the Deer", which described the travails of an Inuit tribe battling starvation and government indifference in Canada's Arctic.

The book sparked interest in the north, and Mowat built on his fame with "Never Cry Wolf" in 1963, in which he tried to dispel the image of the wolf as a killing machine responsible for the decline in the caribou population.

But some experts denounced as nonsense his portrayal of wolves as relatively gentle animals that would rather hunt mice or hares than caribou and debates about the accuracy of his work continued for decades. In 1996, Canada's Saturday Night magazine put Mowat on its cover with a long nose, implying he was a liar.

"I took some pride in having it known that I never let facts get in the way of a good story. I was writing subjective non-fiction all along," Mowat told an interviewer in 2012.

Mowat wrote more than 40 books and was awarded the prestigious Order of Canada decoration in 1981. He is survived by his second wife and two adult children.

He was also a friend of former Liberal prime minister Pierre Trudeau, himself a great nature lover.

"He was obviously a passionate Canadian who shaped a lot of my generation growing up with his books, and he will be sorely missed," said Trudeau's son Justin, 42, who heads Canada's opposition Liberal Party. – Reuters, May 8, 2014.

Pair of ‘Princess Diaries’ books after 5-year break

Just like her fans, Mia has grown up, and "Royal Wedding" sees her prepare for marriage to long-term beau Michael.

At the same time, it emerges that Mia has a half-sister, Olivia Grace, who, just like Mia in the original novels, must now come to terms with being an ordinary girl and part of a royal family.

As such, Olivia is to receive her own spin-off series starting with "From the Notebooks of a Middle School Princess".

And Mia's own escalating adventure involves her proving her own suitability to rule Genovia as her father is forced out.

"Royal Wedding" will be the 11th Princess Diaries book, and its 2015 publication date coincides with the 15th anniversary of the series as a whole, wrote Meg on her website.

Meanwhile, "From the Notebooks..." will be the first time Cabot will have written and illustrated the same book, with the author noting that Olivia Grace's biracial background holds "a special resonance for me and my family", a reference to her own adoptive brother.

"I've been planning this book for some time. I got the inspiration a few years ago from actual goings-on in a certain royal family of a small European principality," she confessed, while reminding fans of Disney's two "Princess Diaries" movies that Prince Philippe may have died in the adaptations but remains very much alive in the books. – AFP/Relaxnews, May 8, 2014.

Setahun berlalu: Adakah strategi BN, Umno masih relevan (Siri 1)

Posted: 07 May 2014 04:25 PM PDT

May 08, 2014

Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed is a three-term MP for Pulai, three-term Umno Pulai Divison Chief and the new PAC chairman. Apart from being in the new politics, he also writes for The Malaysian Insider while debating other matters at www.nurjazlan.net

– 8 Mei, 2014.
