With key forward Radamel Falcao watching on as he recovers from a knee ligament injury, his usual strike partner Teofilo Gutierrez put Colombia ahead in the 11th minute at San Lorenzo's Nuevo Gasometro.

Fellow striker Carlos Bacca headed down a corner into the six-yard box where the lurking Gutierrez stabbed the ball home with his left foot.

Bacca increased Colombia's lead on the stroke of halftime when he rifled in Victor Ibarbo's low right cross with the South Americans dominant in the first half.

Senegal pulled one back less than two minutes after the restart through Moussa Konate, who shot from the left across veteran keeper Faryd Mondragon's goal and in at the far post.

Midfielder Cheikh Ndoye equalised five minutes later with a shot from outside the box that surprised the 42-year-old Mondragon, set to go to his third finals in a 20-year span as his country's second choice keeper.

Senegal had midfielder Ibrahima Seck sent off in the 66th minute for a bad lunge on substitute Alexander Mejia, who also came off hurt, leaving both sides with 10 men as Colombia had made all their changes.

"We knew it would be tough. That's how African teams play, they run to the last minute," Colombia right back Camilo Zuniga told reporters.

"This match was very useful for us and the professor (coach Jose Pekerman) will get a lot from it."

Falcao, who had knee surgery in January, is hoping to make the cut for Pekerman's 23-man squad for the Brazil finals when he names it by Monday's deadline.

Colombia play Jordan in their last warm-up on Friday in Argentine Pekerman's home city, where they have made their pre-tournament camp.

Bubba Watson powers to third-round Memorial lead

June 01, 2014

American Bubba Watson (pic) surged to the lead as Englishman Paul Casey plunged four strokes behind after the third round of the Memorial tournament in Dublin, Ohio on Saturday.

Masters champion Watson used his astonishing power to compile five early birdies on his way to a three-under-par 69 in ideal conditions at Muirfield Village.

The left-hander posted a 12-under 204 total, one stroke ahead of compatriot Scott Langley (67) with one round left.

Young Japanese player Hideki Matsuyama (69) was two strokes behind, while world number one Adam Scott of Australia (68) trailed by three despite a bogey at the final hole.

Casey, who started the day with a three-shot lead, had a nightmare round, struggling from start to finish as he carded four-over 76 to fall four strokes off the pace.

"I kept my head down, grinding away. Shooting in the 60s every day is my goal. It's working out so far," Watson told CBS television after the round.

Watson made his move with five birdies in the first seven holes, charging to the turn in four-under.

He was more subdued on the back nine, coming home in one-over, including a bogey at the par-four 18th, where he sprayed his second shot right of the green.

Matsuyama, meanwhile, was in contention for the second successive week after sharing the lead going into the final round at the Colonial, where he tied for 10th behind winner Scott.

Scott continued to justify his ranking as world number one with another impressive round that included a 25-foot eagle at the par-five 15th.

"It's feeling good this week, better than last week," he said ominously. – Reuters, June 1, 2014.

Jacques Cousteau’s grandson aims for record 31 days undersea

After years of planning and delays, Fabien Cousteau will make a 18-meter dive tomorrow in an attempt to spend 31 days in a laboratory known as Aquarius, observing fish behaviour, studying the impact of ocean pollution and warming seas on coral reefs, and measuring the effect of lengthy underwater stays on the human body.

"There are a lot of challenges physically and psychologically," said Cousteau, 46, who was born in Paris and grew up on his grandfather's ships, Calypso and Alcyone.

"The benefit is that the backyard is infinite."

Cousteau will be living and working underwater with a team of researchers and documentary filmmakers. If he succeeds in spending the entire time submerged, Cousteau will beat the 30-day underwater record set 50 years ago in the Red Sea by his grandfather.

The cylindrical 13-meter Aquarius is the last undersea laboratory still operating. It sits on a patch of sand near deep coral reefs about 14.5 kilometres south of Key Largo, Florida.

It is "the best-kept secret in the oceans," Cousteau told Reuters in 2013.

Dozens of other undersea labs around the world have been mothballed due to high costs. In 1963, Jacques-Yves Cousteau along with a half-dozen divers he dubbed oceanauts spent 30 days inside an undersea lab called Conshelf II near the Port of Sudan.

Aquarius is air conditioned with wireless Internet access, a shower, a bathroom, six bunks and portholes that give the occupants a 24-hour view of the surrounding marine life.

The living space is at a depth where the atmospheric pressure is roughly two-and-a-half to three times that at the surface. It will be pressurized to prevent decompression sickness, when human tissue absorbs gases like nitrogen in dangerously high volumes.

Beyond the otherworldly experience, the benefit of living underwater is it will help scientists with their day-to-day research and data collection.

Researchers studying the effects of coral bleaching – when warming waters prompt the living coral to expel the colourful algae living inside – will depart Aquarius at the crack of dawn each morning to study the reefs' energy production before the day begins.

"Day in, day out, our science schedule is pretty repetitive. I think the documentary guys are going to get bored," said Andrew Shantz, a Ph.D. candidate in marine ecoscience at Florida International University, who will spend 17 days in the lab.

Following the morning dive, teams will return to the station to speak via Skype with classrooms around the world and test how the extended stay at depth affects their bodies.

They will re-emerge from Aquarius in scuba gear around noon and after night falls to collect additional data that would be impossible without the underwater lab.

"You end up getting these structured, regimented observations that you don't get on a single dive," Shantz said. – Reuters, May 31, 2014

World Cup city gripped by dengue fever

Workers in Campinas have embarked on a huge operation to eradicate mosquitos, which spread the disease, before the Portuguese and Nigerian teams arrive.

Some 32,384 people have been infected by dengue this year in the southeastern city about one hour from Sao Paulo. At least three people have died.

"It's a record epidemic. It's bigger than the 11,500 cases registered in all of 2007," said Andrea Von Zuben, who coordinates the Campinas dengue control program.

Dengue is a viral infection carried by the aedes aegypti mosquito.

The fever is like chronic influenza with severe headaches, muscle and joint pain, vomiting and a rash.

Severe cases can be deadly. Three people have died of dengue this year in Campinas, women aged 27, 69 and 81. Three other deaths are being investigated to see if they were caused by the disease.

There is no cure for dengue, so prevention is the best medicine.

The World Health Organization recommends people in infected areas prevent mosquito bites with window screens, insect repellant and mosquito coils.

It also suggests covering up exposed skin – advice that may cramp Portuguese captain Ronaldo's bare-chested style, a topic of much commentary after his pectoral-flexing goal celebration at this year's Champions League final.

Brazil has been hit harder by dengue than any other country so far this century, with seven million cases reported between 2000 and 2013.

Von Zuben said the Campinas outbreak was being driven by a heatwave at the beginning of the year, the prevalence of a particularly virulent dengue strain and poor sanitation that leaves pools of standing water where mosquitos breed.

But she said the areas where the Nigerian and Portuguese squads will be are a mosquito-control priority for health officials.

"We put larvicides and anti-mosquito poisons at the airport, in the training centers and in the hotels, so the teams will run a much smaller risk than the local population," she told AFP.

Team doctors 'concerned'

The authorities have been in touch with the teams' doctors, who were "concerned," Von Zuben said.

She said her staff had recommended insect repellant.

"We've been guaranteed that the situation has been identified and is under control. There shouldn't be any reason for alarm," said the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF).

In early May, when Portuguese coach Paulo Bento visited the training center, city officials told him three mosquito-control operations would be carried out before the team arrives on June 11.

The army has helped sanitation workers clean up 83,000 tonnes of rubbish and dozens of buildings have been sealed off and sprayed.

Campinas is not the only city facing the dengue threat.

Medical journal The Lancet Infectious Diseases recently said World Cup host cities Natal, Fortaleza and Recife in the northeast were also at risk.

Of course, infectious diseases are a two-way street.

Campinas has also launched a program to give citizens free vaccinations before World Cup fans descend on the city from Africa and Europe, where "polio and measles are still persistent," it said.

Priority will be given to taxi and bus drivers, employees at restaurants and tourist attractions, and the staff of six major hotels. – AFP pic, May 31, 2014.

Vienna rides Conchita wave with Life Ball AIDS charity

Posted: 31 May 2014 07:08 AM PDT

Eurovision Song Contest winner Conchita Wurst of Austria performed on stage during a concert in Vienna earlier this month. – Reuters pic, May 31, 2014Eurovision Song Contest winner Conchita Wurst of Austria performed on stage during a concert in Vienna earlier this month. – Reuters pic, May 31, 2014Eurovision winner Conchita Wurst will rub elbows on tonight with former US President Bill Clinton, actress Lindsay Lohan and designer Vivienne Westwood at Europe's biggest AIDS charity event, Vienna's Life Ball.

This year's event takes place as the Austrian capital basks in the victory of the bearded drag queen Wurst earlier this month, which has at least temporarily given it a self-image as a hotbed of tolerance.

Skimpy costumes will be de rigeur, and guests wearing costumes the organisers' "style police" judge to be exceptional could win half-price admission to the Vienna ball. Tickets are normally distributed by a lottery and cost 160 euros.

The event is inspired by the 15th-century Hieronymus Bosch triptych "The Garden of Earthly Delights", which depicts hedonistic revellers in its centre panel and the Garden of Eden and hell on either side.

The ball has drawn criticism for using Bosch-like posters featuring a nude transgender model, Carmen Carrera. Photographer David LaChapelle designed two versions, showing Carrera with either male or female genitalia, along with the slogan: "I am Adam – I am Eve – I am me." In response, a vigilante granny has become a media event by going around defacing the exposed parts.

Life Ball organiser Gery Keszler said the poster was intended to provoke discussion of acceptance, not to exploit Wurst's Eurovision victory.

"The goal of the poster was to reach a dialogue, but the reaction was bigger than we thought," Keszler told Reuters. "For one night, Vienna seems like the centre of tolerance because the Life Ball brings everybody together. Not everything in the world is black or white, it is all a spectrum, and we wanted to present that," he said in an interview.

Wurst will perform her winning power ballad "Rise Like A Phoenix" live on the ball's main stage.

Other celebrity guests include Courtney Love, Kesha, and Desperate Housewives actress Marcia Cross.

The annual ball, now in its 22nd year, has grown from a small gay-community event to a celebrity-studded society fixture. Its cost-free venue, the neo-Gothic Vienna city hall, is the first government building to host an AIDS-related event.

The ball raised around 2.4 million euros last year, much of it donated to the Clinton Health Access Initiative to treat and reduce HIV infections in children.

Sub-Saharan Africa accounts for over 70% of the world's HIV-positive people from an estimated total of 35 million living with the disease worldwide.

According to the United Nations, in 2012 2.3 million contracted new HIV infections and 1.6 million people died of AIDS-related illnesses. – Reuters, May 31, 2014

John Malkovich commands the seas as Blackbeard in TV’s ‘Crossbones’

The adventure series that premiered yesterday is a reimagining of the story of the notorious English buccaneer, named for his dark beard and fierce appearance, who terrorised the seas and plundered ships.

Blackbeard was killed in 1718, but in "Crossbones", written by award-winning writer Neil Cross who created the British crime drama "Luther", he is still alive years later and determined to get his hands on the newly invented longitude chronometer, a device to navigate the seas.

"He's mercurial, charming, witty, sometimes haunted and very, very brutal, but also in a strange way loyal – just a very complex character," Malkovich, 60, said of Blackbeard.

Menacing characters are familiar territory for the actor, who was Oscar-nominated in 1994 for his role as the psychotic assassin in the film, "In the Line of Fire", and won acclaim as the evil Colonel Walter Kurtz in the television adaptation of Joseph Conrad's "Heart of Darkness".

He also earned an Emmy in 1986, playing Dustin Hoffman's son Biff in the TV movie of Arthur Miller's "Death of a Salesman".

Malkovich signed onto "Crossbones", which was shot entirely on location in Puerto Rico, after reading the script for the first episode.

"I thought it was a excellent piece of writing," he said about the series.

Blackbeard's band of marauders nearly steal the chronometer during an attack on an English ship, but their efforts are thwarted by spy Tom Lowe, played by British actor Richard Coyle ("Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time"), who poses as the ship's surgeon.

Lowe destroys the prized instrument but memorises its code and is taken prisoner to the secret island of Santa Compana, where he must find a way to reassemble it to save his life.

Malkovich heads an international cast that includes Lebanon-born actress Yasmine Al Massri in her US acting debut as Blackbeard's love interest, Selima El Sharad. Briton Claire Foy ("Season of the Witch") captures Lowe's heart as the aristocrat Kate Balfour, and Swedish-born Australian actor David Hoflin plays the pirate Charlie Rider.

While the English try to track down Blackbeard, Lowe attempts to outwit the scheming pirate, gain his trust and find an opportunity to kill him.

"A decent part of the series has to do with how he does or doesn't do that and why. That is the main relationship," said Malkovich.

As the two men battle with and against each other the line between friend and foe is blurred.

"In a certain way Blackbeard might be a better friend to him than he is to Blackbeard," Malkovich added. – Reuters, May 31, 2014.

Texas women sue ‘Fifty Shades’ publisher for royalties, advances

Posted: 30 May 2014 05:51 PM PDT

May 31, 2014

Two Texas women, who said they were part of the original publishing team for "Fifty Shades of Grey", have filed a lawsuit seeking money from the global best-seller that they were allegedly tricked into surrendering by their Australian partner.

Jennifer Lynn Pedroza and Christa Beebe filed suit in a Tarrant County court in Texas on Thursday against Amanda Hayward and The Writers Coffee Shop publishing company seeking what they consider a fair share of the advances and royalties from the "Fifty Shades of Grey" erotic trilogy.

The Writers Coffee Shop (TWCS), where Hayward is chief executive, was not immediately available for comment.

The suit alleges that Hayward cut the two Texas women out of money generated by the novels through an agreement with Random House, which saw payments flow to Hayward and not her partners.

"She then fraudulently induced Pedroza and Beebe into signing 'service agreements' with TWCS, and subsequently terminated both of them," the lawsuit said.

The "Fifty Shades of Grey" series from British author E.L. James has sold more than 100 million copies worldwide, its American publisher Vintage Books said in February. – Reuters, May 31, 2014.

The clash of generations in Teluk Intan

Posted: 30 May 2014 04:28 PM PDT

May 31, 2014

Zairil Khir Johari is a chocolate purveyor-turned-politician. He finds both experiences bittersweet.

Earlier this month, I had the privilege of attending the 44th St Gallen Symposium, an annual international conference held in a picturesque town in eastern Switzerland, having been selected as a global "Leader of Tomorrow" by the International Students Council of the University of St Gallen.

Over the three-day conference, I met many other young men and women under the age of 35 from all corners of the world, each a leader in their field. From entrepreneurs to venture capitalists to Ivy League scholars to fellow politicians, I relished the opportunity to engage them in workshops, debates and forums.

The presence of so many up-and-coming young leaders certainly proved that capability is not age specific. One impressive example that I came across was Lazar Krstic, a Yale-trained 29-year-old from Serbia who was appointed last year to his country's Cabinet as Minister of Finance. I thought that surely such an appointment must have been an anomaly rather than the norm, until I was told the current Austrian Minister of Foreign Affairs is only 27 years old. Despite being Malaysia's youngest serving MP at 31, I suddenly felt old.

The theme of this year's symposium was interestingly entitled "The Clash of Generations". This is an issue that is quickly gaining relevance in Europe, a continent with a disproportionately large aging population. As a result, fissures have emerged, such as the prospect of rising healthcare costs and unsustainable pensions growth.

In Malaysia, we face an inter-generational divide as well, though the problem is not quite the same. With more than 70% of the population below the age of 40, the increasing number of Malaysians entering the workforce in the next few decades will be enough to sustain the pension payments of the older and smaller demographic of retirees.

Nevertheless, the situation in Malaysia produces a different set of issues. For example, the need to balance population growth with social mobility will require the creation of not only more jobs, but higher-paying ones. This will require our education system to keep up in terms of staying relevant to industry needs. Besides creating better opportunities, we also need to ensure the vibrancy of our workforce, and that requires us to keep our brightest young minds from leaving our country in search of greener pastures elsewhere (especially across the causeway).

Between new politics and old politics

In Malaysia, the "clash of generations" is not only manifested in the socio-economic sphere, but also the political one. In fact, I have experienced it first-hand as the deputy campaign director of DAP's Teluk Intan by-election campaign these last two weeks.

In this case, the clash is not simply due to the age gap between our young lawyer, Dyana Sofya, and the seasoned president of Gerakan, Dato Mah Siew Keong. Instead, it is between what they each represent – between new politics and old politics.

The stark differences between the two dynamics have unfolded very clearly throughout the campaign. Take for example statements made by senior BN leaders such as Defence Minister Dato Seri Zahid Hamidi, who smugly remarked that Dyana was "… not as pretty in person as in pictures and on television".

Far from being an isolated lapse of judgement, such an incredibly crude line of argument, as misogynistic and patronising as it sounds, continued to pepper the headlines during the entire campaign. One by one, BN ministers have trumpeted the same sexist tune.

Minister of Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Dato Abdul Rahman Dahlan insinuated that people would vote for Dyana simply because she wears lipstick, while Deputy Finance Minister Dato Ahmad Maslan compared her looks to his wife's. Capping it off was Deputy Minister for Agriculture and Agro-based Industries, Dato Tajuddin Abdul Rahman, who suggested that it was not wrong to "gawk at her beauty".

Besides the testosterone-induced need to flex their male egos, there has been nothing to suggest that BN leaders have realised the need to try anything other than the usual formula of character assassination, money politics, intimidation, race mongering and the wanton abuse of government machinery.

And this is in spite of the fact that BN has experienced a steady downtrend in electoral results ever since abandoning their reform agenda post-2004. Instead, it is Pakatan Rakyat that has managed to capture public imagination with policy ideas to improve socio-economic welfare, reform state institutions and fight against corruption.

In contrast to BN, DAP's Teluk Intan campaign has been all about the new brand of constructive politics for which young Malaysians yearn. To begin with, a fresh, idealistic and educated young candidate is proffered, as opposed to our opponent's recycled contender. Besides being young and female, she also comes across as the unlikeliest of DAP candidates – Malay, active Umno family and UiTM-trained.

Yet despite being what a fellow columnist recently termed as an "Umno product", Dyana is everything Umno isn't. Vowing to "Malaysianise" Malaysia, she has time and again proven that she will steer clear from the old Umno-BN style of politics. Instead, she has chosen to present a parliamentary agenda that encompasses policies concerning cost of living, good governance, youth development and women empowerment – choices made after fusing empirical data from local surveys with her own policy interests.

The contrast between the two political paradigms is not surprising, given the vastly different historical experiences that divide the two generations in question. In this context, I have always suggested that a Malaysian dichotomy exists between those above and below the age of 40.

Malaysians above the age of 40 lived through a tumultuous post-war period that included the Emergency, the struggle for independence, the merger, the split and the traumatic racial riots of May 13, 1969. For those of us born after, these historical incidences do not quite shape our world-view the same way it has shaped our parents'. Instead, our experience has been shaped by 22 years of Mahathirism, Reformasi and the Bersih rallies.

This is why every general election in this country since our generation came of age as voters has seen the reform platform gaining ground, beginning with the 2004 general election when Pak Lah was elected as prime minister with an unprecedented majority on the promise to breathe fresh air into a political landscape dominated by one man for the last two decades.

Meanwhile, whatever reforms that were promised first by Pak Lah and then by his successor Najib have fizzled out as corruption, cronyism and state monopoly capitalism continue to plague the country's economy, while the right-wing agenda has become politically dominant.

As such, it is all the more vital that Dyana Sofya wins the Teluk Intan by-election. A victory for Dyana would not only send her to Parliament, but also signal the victory of new ideas and constructive politics over BN's outdated and arrogant politics premised upon race, religion and the total abuse of power.

And so, after two weeks of intense campaigning, Teluk Intan goes to the polls today. Although I believe we have done all we can, I cannot help but feel nervous and excited at the same time – nervous in the face of the seemingly insurmountable might of the BN machinery, and excited at the prospects that a Pakatan Rakyat victory would bring.

It is therefore my hope that, come this evening, the feisty young lady I recruited three years ago will take over from me as the 13th Malaysian Parliament's youngest MP, and in so doing possibly also become the catalyst for much-needed change in Malaysian politics. – May 31, 2014.

Melayu dan cerita DNA babi

Posted: 30 May 2014 04:15 PM PDT

May 31, 2014

– 31 Mei, 2014.

– 31 Mei, 2014.

Dynasty Fine Wines debuted the Wisemenship Wine Collection at Vinexpo Asia-Pacific in Hong Kong this week. The quartet of wines are being marketed to represent the qualities and skills in Chinese scholarship, as depicted by four plants: a plum tree, orchid, bamboo and chrysanthemum.

In ancient Chinese folklore, the plum tree is meant to symbolise resilience and perseverance. In the Wisemenship Wine Collection, the plum tree Fiera is made with Muscat, Italian Riesling and Chardonnay.

The orchid, or Elegantia, symbolises modesty and beauty and is represented as an oak-matured Merlot with aromas of violet, cherry and blackberry.

To represent bamboo and the accompanying virtues of modesty and gentle strength, Modesta is a dry Merlot with aromas of coffee, blackberry, "grilled meat" and cream, while Ravissantia or the courage of the chrysanthemum is turned into a full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon with hints of sweet pepper, eucalyptus, clove, cinnamon and licorice.

There we were, slurping up every bit of it in the Shredded Cuttlefish with Cucumber and Chilled Bittergourd with Plum – it was that good. These are two dishes in the Combination of Cold Platters at this award-winning restaurant at Feast Village in Starhill Gallery. Only the third dish – Pork Jelly with Chinese Wine – did not come with any sauce, but that is another story.

Steamed Fillet of Imperial Sea Grouper rolled with Vegetables in Chiu Chow Style. – The Malaysian Insider pic, May 31, 2014.Steamed Fillet of Imperial Sea Grouper rolled with Vegetables in Chiu Chow Style. – The Malaysian Insider pic, May 31, 2014.The Shredded Cuttlefish with Cucumber had jellyfish topped with grilled cuttlefish that had been pounded and cut into strips. This came with a sweet, sour and hot sauce that was perfectly tuned up. The Chilled Bittergourd had been immersed in an infusion of sour plum, rock sugar and orange zest, so that sweet and sour were in harmony. I wiped the platter clean.

The Pork Jelly with Chinese Wine is classic Chiu Chow (or Teochew), with a little "updating" from executive chef Alex Au. It's pig trotter and pig's tail simmered in "lo sui" or aged braising sauce with herbs till the gelatine comes out. Rose wine is then added and the gelatinous meat is chilled till set. I bit slowly through a slice of this, savouring the almost buttery texture of the meat encased in soft gelatine, touched with the fragrance of the wine. It was so delicious.

The Combination of Cold Platters begins the six-course Oscars of Hospitality Set Menu at Pak Loh Chiu Chow. Available from June 1 till end July, it's to celebrate Chef Alex winning the title of Masterchef (Asian cuisine) in the Hospitality Asia Platinum Awards 2013-2015.

Pak Loh Chiu Chow was named Hapa Restaurant of the Year and also received the Hapa Flavours of Asia award.

Chef Alex presented as second course the Fortune Parcel of Prawns in Double-boiled Superior Almond Soup. At first glance, the "parcel" looked like a fluffy snow fungus sitting in a white soup, but it was actually a delicate egg white skin with a prawn filling within. It was the smoothest, most fragrant almond soup I have ever had. "I blended it three times and filtered it," said chef Alex. He added strips of deep-fried fish skin to the almond soup for mouthfeel; it had a nice, toasty aroma too. I love almond soup, but it's always sweet, not savoury. This was exquisite.

Steamed Fillet of Imperial Sea Grouper rolled with Vegetables in Chiu Chow Style was next. This featured fish rolled up with enoki mushrooms and yellow chives, then wrapped in Chinese cabbage and steamed with salted vegetables, thin slices of carrot, tomato and sour plum. It's a typical Chiu Chow technique in steaming fish, said the chef. Again, the sauce was a winner, hitting the spot with sour tempered with sweet, touched with a little wine. There was no question of not drinking it up.

The Steamed Quail's Egg accompanied by Sun-dried Scallops looked like a daisy, in a "cup" made of fine threads of dried scallops. Green vegetables fanning out completed the ensemble. The crispy, flavourful dried scallop cup collapsed at first bite into the creamy egg, touched with the light and sweet sauce steeped from dried scallops.

Village Style Wok-Fried Fragrant Rice with Assorted Seafood, Duck Egg and Shrimp Paste. – The Malaysian Insider pic, May 31, 2014.Village Style Wok-Fried Fragrant Rice with Assorted Seafood, Duck Egg and Shrimp Paste. – The Malaysian Insider pic, May 31, 2014.Even the Village Style Wok-Fried Fragrant Rice with Assorted Seafood, Duck Egg and Shrimp Paste was out of the ordinary. The chef had fried the rice with prawns, grouper meat and the famous har cheong or shrimp sauce from Tai O in Lantau Island, Hong Kong. He served it wrapped in a net made from duck egg.

The Chilled Osmanthus Flower Jelly served with Fresh Aloe Vera and Bird's Nest provided a flawless ending to our lunch. It hit a high note with the fragrant, delicate jelly, cubes of smooth aloe vera and a dollop of bird's nest. Small cubes of honeydew and rock melon and a kei chee (wolfberry) sauce completed it.

Two glasses of wine are served with this: Grant Burge Benchmark Chardonnay from Australia and Hunter's Sauvignon Blanc from Marlborough, New Zealand.

It's a menu worthwhile sampling thanks to the passion and consummate skills of Chef Alex. He's originally from the Pak Loh Chiu Chow Restaurant in Hong Kong, where he learnt his art from a master chef. He has been with Pak Loh in Starhill Gallery since it started in 2004. His signature dishes include Cold Flower Crab, Salted Pork steamed and deep-fried, Braised Goose, Oyster Porridge and of course Oh Nee, the well-loved Chiu Chow yam dessert.
