Only Jesus can help Brazil hold best World Cup, says Romario

RIO DE JANEIRO, June 20 — The 2014 World Cup in Brazil, beset by delays in work on stadiums and a dire need for better transport and airports, will not be the best ever, former striker Romario said in an interview published today.

Romario, now a member of Congress, has been a big critic of his country's preparations for football's showpiece tournament despite being part of the Brazilian committee at Fifa headquarters in Zurich when Brazil was named as host.

The former Barcelona striker, a World Cup winner with Brazil in 1994, has called on Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) president Ricardo Teixeira to clarify corruption allegations made against him.

"Back then, when the Cup was handed to Brazil, there was much celebration. I said two things: Brazil not only had the conditions to hold the World Cup but also the best of all time. I hold by the first idea (but) I withdraw the second," he said.

"Because, from what I'm seeing, things aren't going to happen. We'll have the Cup but sadly we'll have problems and it won't be the best," Romario told the daily Folha de Sao Paulo in his office in the capital, Brasilia.

"I'm going to tell you a truth: the gospels say Jesus will return. Only He can ensure Brazil stage the best Cup. If he comes down in the next three years, then it will be possible."

Of the 12 stadiums being refurbished or built from scratch, two have yet to get beyond the paperwork, including in Sao Paulo, Brazil's biggest city. This delay has led to FIFA discarding Sao Paulo for the Confederations Cup in 2013.

Romario said the original budget for the venues kept increasing.

"We've been to five venues of the 2014 Cup and we're going to others. There used to be a budget at the beginning of the preparations that has at least doubled. Going by what we heard at the venue cities, they made plans they can't meet," he said.

"Fifa makes a recommendation to the LOC (local organising committee) and the LOC makes it an obligation. The way things are going, the stadiums will reach (a cost of) 15 billion (Brazilian) reais (RM28.6 billion) and that's absurd." — Reuters

Sangakkara makes century as draw looms

SOUTHAMPTON, June 20 — Kumar Sangakkara scored his first international century in England as Sri Lanka reached 334 for five at tea as a draw loomed in the third and final test today.

Stand-in captain Sangakkara led his team's fight-back after England began the fifth day with hopes of sealing a 2-0 series win.

He was out for a 119 just before the interval, leaving Thilan Samaraweera 87 not out and Prasanna Jaywardene on six as Sri Lanka led by 141 runs.

Sangakkara notched up his 25th test century after previously managing a top score of just 26 in the series. He departed when driving James Anderson to substitute fielder Adam Rouse at backward point, ending an innings of more than six hours.

He required 35 minutes to score his first run after lunch and only moved from his interval score of 89 with an edge to the boundary that flew over first slip Andrew Strauss off Anderson.

Sangakkara reached three figures with a quick single to mid-on and he raised his arms in jubilation, having gone 10 years with a top score of 70 from all internationals in England.

England's only other success of the day was that of nightwatchman Rangana Herath before lunch for 36. Samaraweera added 141 for the fifth wicket with his skipper and neared his 13th test hundred.

Both Samaraweera, who has faced 128 balls, and Sangakkara punished the bad ball clinically. Sangakkara illustrated his intentions by smashing two fours off Anderson through cover and then straight down the ground that reduced the deficit to 45.

Before lunch, Herath survived three chances. First when he was on five, the left-hander pushed forward at an Anderson delivery and first slip Strauss, perhaps distracted by second slip Graeme Swann, parried the ball towards third man.

Herath survived again when he could have been run out on seven. Sangakkara scampered through for a quick single but Anderson's throw from cover missed the stumps when Herath was well short of his ground.

England's bowlers were often too short or wide in their line and length and the Sri Lankan batsmen were able to leave the ball more than they should have been allowed to.

England missed a third opportunity to remove Herath, on 19, when he was struck on the pad by offspinner Swann. Umpire Rod Tucker gave not out and England chose not to review the decision. Replays suggested Herath would have been out if they had.

England's morning worsened with the introduction of part-time bowler Jonathan Trott when Stuart Broad was off the field with a bruised heel. He conceded 15 runs from his first over, including four overthrows from Chris Tremlett.

Swann finally dismissed Herath lbw when he missed a sweep shot. — Reuters

Barry Humphries joins Hobbit cast

Posted: 20 Jun 2011 07:55 AM PDT

SYDNEY, June 20 – Australian satirist Barry Humphries, best known for his characters Dame Edna Everage and Sir Les Patterson, is the latest actor recruited by Peter Jackson for the upcoming "The Hobbit" movies.

The Oscar-winning director announced on his Facebook page today that Humphries (picture) will play the role of the Goblin King.

"I'm highly excited that Barry Humphries will be portraying the Goblin King, in much the way Andy Serkis created Gollum," said Jackson, adding that while Humphries was best known as a comedian and satirist, he was also a good actor.

"In his spare time, Barry is also a fine actor, and we're looking forward to seeing him invest the Goblin King with the delicate sensitivity and emotional depth this character deserves."

Also joining the cast is Evangeline Lilly, known for her role on the television series "Lost", who will be playing a new character, the Woodland Elf Tauriel.

Another recent signing is British comedian Stephen Fry, who will play The Master of Laketown.

"Evangeline and Barry, along with Welsh actor Luke Evans as Bard and Benedict Cumberbatch as Smaug, just about rounds out the major casting. I cannot wait to get stuck into these new scenes," said Jackson.

"The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" is due to be released in December 2012, while "The Hobbit: There and Back Again" is slated for release 12 months later.

After years of wrangling and delays, the US$500 million project, a two-part prequel to blockbuster "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy, began filming in New Zealand in March.

Actors reprising their "Lord of the Rings" roles include Ian McKellen, who returns as Gandalf, Cate Blanchett as Galadriel, Orlando Bloom as Legolas, Christopher Lee as Saruman, Elijah Wood as Frodo, and Serkis as Gollum.

British actor Martin Freeman takes on the central role of Bilbo Baggins, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome dragon Smaug. – AFP

Paloma Herrera celebrates a life of dance

Posted: 20 Jun 2011 04:49 AM PDT

NEW YORK, June 20 – "To dance is my life," Argentine ballerina Paloma Herrera said as she celebrated 20 years this month with the prestigious American Ballet Theatre.

Modest and very un-diva like, Herrara (picture) is at 35 one of the symbols of the nation's foremost ballet troupes. She has been a principal dancer since 1995.

"At ABT, you learn so much from all the dancers who are there," said Herrera, who joined the company from her native Buenos Aires in 1991.

"We have cultures from all the world, dancers from all the world... To be 20 years with the company, you really have to love it. And I love it because it's always a place of inspiration."

Bestowed with extraordinary talent from a young age, Herrera began her ballet studies at age seven, and at 11, moved to the former Soviet Union to study at the Minsk Ballet School.

She later studied in London and at New York's School of American Ballet, where she was chosen after just six months to dance the lead role in "Raymonda" (1898) created by Marius Petipa, the maitre de ballet of the St. Petersburg Imperial Theatres, with music by Russian composer Alexander Glazunov.

At 17, she was promoted to ABT soloist and two years later, to principal ballerina.

As one of 17 principal ballerinas, Herrera is currently dancing in "The Bright Stream," which is set to music by Dmitri Shostakovich. But she will also perform in "Coppelia", "Swan Lake," "The Sleeping Beauty" and "Don Quixote" before the summer is over.

Argentina's consulate in New York provided a warm tribute this week, including a showing of the documentary "Paloma Herrera, Here and Now" before an audience that cheered her onstage prowess and relished an opportunity to speak with her.

"The truth is I'm not a great fan of competitions," she told the crowd, "but I have to say that they really helped me.

"I can't remember since I was seven years old not dancing," she said with a smile, adding that when she has precious free time, "I'm off to the movies, I go the theatre, I go to concerts, I go for dinner with friends."

When dancing, she said "everything else is out. The outside world is just different."

She prefers not to reflect too much on the future. "I live the moment," said Herrera.

"I try to enjoy 100 per cent today because you never know what can happen tomorrow." – AFP

Van Cleef & Arpels sees flight to quality

Posted: 20 Jun 2011 01:05 AM PDT

LONDON, June 20 — Van Cleef & Arpels is seeing buoyant demand for its most exquisite jewels from an increasingly international class of super-rich as it expands its presence in fast-growing economies such as China and Russia.

As the Paris-based luxury jeweller showed off its Bals de Legende collection, one-off creations in diamonds, emeralds and rare gemstones inspired by legendary balls of the 20th century, CEO Stanislas de Quercize said the client base at the top end of the fine jewellery market was becoming increasingly international.

The pieces were on display in the sumptuous Lancaster House, St James's Palace, in central London, which mirrored the grandeur of the historic balls, and ranged in price up to €6.3 million (RM27.4 million).

"We have more clients from different locations, and this is good: it means that there is a greater spread of culture, wealth and connoisseurship," De Quercize told Reuters in an interview.

In former times, traditional collectors of Van Cleef & Arpels jewels, which have been worn by some of the world's most glamorous women such as the Duchess of Windsor, Marlene Dietrich and Madonna, were from a narrower group of ultra-wealthy.

But now the emergence of fast-growing economies such as the BRICS — Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa — has created opportunities for Van Cleef & Arpels, which started from a boutique in Paris's plush Place Vendome in 1906 and has since grown to become a global brand with outlets around the world.

Last week Van Cleef & Arpels, a subsidiary of Swiss-based luxury goods group Richemont, opened an outlet in Hong Kong and expanded retail space in Moscow.

Impervious super-rich

Soaring prices of precious metals such as gold and platinum, as well as diamonds, which have bounced back since the 2008 global financial crisis, are no deterrent to the super-rich.

"There is a flight towards quality," De Quercize said.

"People want signature pieces. People are looking for the best quality."

Among the standout pieces of the Bals de Legende collection, sparkling under the Lancaster House's chandeliers, were a pair of earrings featuring two supremely rare briolette-cut diamonds of the highest clarity, each weighing just over 20 carats, for €6.3 million.

The collection was inspired by balls, such as the fancy dress Winter Palace Ball in St Petersburg in 1903, attended by the doomed Romanovs, rulers of Russia, and an Oriental ball, an extravagant celebration of the East, in Paris in 1969.

Some of the pieces from the Bals de Legende collection had already been bought, sources close to Van Cleef & Arpels said, and it came as no surprise that Russian and Far Eastern connoisseurs had come forward. — Reuters

Handle with care

Posted: 19 Jun 2011 05:01 PM PDT

JUNE 20 — The debt crisis in Greece is likely to cause Greece to default on its sovereign debt obligations. While Greece may seem to be a long way away from Malaysia, the repercussions from this event will have global implications that would on the whole be negative for the world.

Lest we forget in 1997, the Asian Financial crisis started with Thailand and caused widespread havoc in South-east Asia.

As I remember it, only Hong Kong and Singapore were able to successfully defend their currencies. Malaysia had to resort to currency controls in 1998 to isolate itself from the onslaught of the currency markets.

Nevertheless, Malaysia was able to prevail as opposed to many of its other neighbours, which suffered major economic, social and political upheavals. To a large extent we have to thank Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad for his unconventional actions at the time which gave the country some breathing room and gave the economy a chance to recover.

Lest we forget, in 1998, other than the ringgit taking a nose dive and dwindling foreign exchange reserves, we also had massive social and political disruptions caused by the "Reformasi" movement.

There were many thousands of people in the streets protesting against Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's arrest for sodomy. It certainly was not a given that the Malaysian economy could be salvaged.

We had to form Danaharta and Danamodal to rescue our beleaguered banking system that was overwhelmed with bad loans. It was not until after the 1999 general election that we achieved some semblance of order and normalcy.

In light of the above, I am always mindful of events that may cause major disruptions at inopportune moments in Malaysia. As a liberal, I support the need for greater space of alternative views even if I may not agree with the views put forward. For example, I am more inclined to support Bersih than Perkasa though I believe both have a right to articulate their views.

Bersih's call for electoral reform resonates more when its president is stopped from entering Sarawak during its recent elections. Certainly the legitimacy of Bersih's calls for reforms is strengthened by the actions of those who would want to stifle it. Nevertheless the naysayers would be better off debating the details of what it wants changed rather than questioning its right to exist.

For example, I am not sure I would support a minimum campaign period of 21 days during an election. It feels a little too long, for me, to listen to all the political nonsense that tends to show up during the campaign period. Nevertheless I think Bersih's objectives are noble and so long as they remain apolitical, they will have my implicit support.

On the other hand, I find Perkasa to be the ugly face in Malaysia's politics. Its rhetoric is divisive and it plays on the worst aspects of human nature. I can safely say that I am totally against what Perkasa stands for.

Nevertheless, if I believe that they have a right to espouse their views, I need to try and understand what underlies their actions no matter how pathetic I may believe them to be.

My view is that they are driven by a strong inferiority complex and that their bravado belies their deep-rooted fears of a future as yet unknown. They seriously underestimate the ability of the Malays to stand confident with their own talents. Their rabble rousing ways too are far from the Malay ideals of carrying oneself with poise and dignity.

So what of the planned rallies on July 9? The best outcome would be for the police to facilitate the various rallies at different venues and ensure that nothing untoward occurs. However, if the scenario is such that Bersih has a rally and the anti-Bersih groups also rally at the same time and place, it would seem that it is a recipe for trouble.

While as a liberal I feel it is unfair to discourage Bersih from exercising its democratic rights to rally, I would also not want to see it being made use of by parties that have their own political agendas.

If I were its president, I would take the high moral ground and postpone the rally to some future date. In a way Bersih has already won the day and been made more relevant by those who would oppose it.

As a Malaysian, first and foremost, I would be extremely wary of events unfolding beyond our shores that may have a significant economic impact on all of us. We need to handle the coming economic disruptions from a position of strength.

It would be better if we could tone down the political rhetoric until the next general election.

Vishu: Meraikan kepelbagaian

Posted: 19 Jun 2011 04:55 PM PDT

Tahun baru Vishu bukanlah suatu perayaan besar-besaran.

Selepas setiap anggota keluarga selesai melihat Vishukani, bermulalah Vishukaineetom iaitu upacara memberi hadiah tahun baru.

Apatah lagi, Vishu bukan perayaan berciri keagamaan.

Posted: 20 Jun 2011 02:16 AM PDT
