The warmly lit interior of Organic Leaf. The warmly lit interior of Organic Leaf.IT'S organic vegetarian dishes with spicy notes and heavier flavours that have been turning on the diners at Organic Leaf in Section 17, Petaling Jaya.  We came to that conclusion after a dinner there recently. Four out of the six main dishes we ordered were chilli hot, with a tart lift to two of them.

Hot and tart - Vietnam Fried Meehoon.Hot and tart - Vietnam Fried Meehoon. We loved the hot and sour Vietnam Fried Meehoon with chilli, curry leaves, choysam, mushrooms, fu chuk, tomato, carrot and cabbage in it. It was served with limau kasturi or small lime, which accounted for the welcome tartness. The meehoon was of the fine and springy Taiwanese variety which soaked in the flavours of the vegetables.

Spot on with flavours and texture - The Mutton Curry.Spot on with flavours and texture - The Mutton Curry. The Curry Mutton was irresistible for the fragrant spices in the thick curry and the "mutton" that was made from the pounded stems of the monkey hat mushroom. It was as close to the texture of meat as you could get. There was the added bonus of soft powdery potato in it. It was a delicious curry.

The Eggplant with Dried Chillies was just as good. This had long thick slices of eggplant dipped in a light batter and deepfried, then stirfried with dried chillies, baby corn, carrot, chilli, red and green peppers, and finished in sweet dark sauce. The sauce had all these intense flavours that went so well with the vegetables. The crispy eggplant sticky with the sauce was yummy.

Hot and sour - Chiangmai Steamed Fish.Hot and sour - Chiangmai Steamed Fish. The Chiangmai Steamed Fish was expectedly hot and sour, with its dark, hot sauce scented with lemongrass and kaffir lime leaf. The fish is made of a firmer tofu and covered with seaweed for the skin. It was topped with julienned pineapple, cucumber and fresh chilli, and a small lime for some mellow tartness. The balance of sweet, hot and sour in this steamed "fish" was perfect.

The Cereal Prawns offered crunchy, crispy bites together with deepfried curry leaves and red chillies in them.  The "prawns" were mushroom stems. I didn't like them at first, but coming back to them later, the flavours seemed to have developed and got better.

Satay - sweet and nutty.Satay - sweet and nutty. The Satay was my least favourite. I thought the nutty sauce smothering the meat on the skewers was too sweet.

Refreshing bites - Fruit Pie Tee.Refreshing bites - Fruit Pie Tee.Earlier, we had started dinner with an appetiser of Fruit Pie Tee. The crispy top hats were filled with chilled red and green apple and grape, tossed in mayonnaise. They made refreshing bites, the pie tee crumbling and tumbling the fruit on to the palate.

We drank the Fresh Fruit Tea made with apple, orange, pineapple, honey, lemon and a little tea. This was a little sweet, but you could ask for less honey in it when you place the order. The sweetness gets diluted as you add more water to it.

It is good to know the mayonnaise is made at the restaurant, as are 90 per cent of the sauces used to cook the food. The beancurd and fu chuk are also made by the chef/owner.

I have to say I didn't miss eating meat at all at Organic Leaf, as the food was not bland and boring at all.

Looking through the menu again, I picked out Petai Fried Rice and Olive Fried Rice which I would love to try on my next visit, as well as Mee Mamak, Herb Pan Mee Soup and Asam Fish Rice. Of course there are dishes without chilli too.

The prices: Chiangmai Steamed Fish is RM14.80, Curry Mutton RM15.80, Vietnam Fried Meehoon RM9.80, Eggplant with Dried Chilli RM13.80, Crispy Cereal Prawns RM14.80, Satay RM8.90, Fruit Pie Tee RM8.80, Fresh Fruit Tea RM14.80.

Bolt leads Gatlin, Jamaican trio into 100m final

Posted: 11 Aug 2013 09:18 AM PDT

August 12, 2013
Latest Update: August 12, 2013 08:18 am

Jamaican sprint legend Usain Bolt (pic) remained on course to regain his 100 metres world title as he progressed into today's final at the World Athletics Championships in Moscow.

Bolt, the 26-year-old world record holder, shadowed the diminutive American Mike Rodgers for most of his semi-final heat, the third of three.

Eyes pinned on the big screen, Bolt was in complete control of the race and edged Rodgers at the line by one-hundredth of a second in 9.92sec.

"I'm happy with how my legs felt," said Bolt. "The reaction was okay, the first 10 metres were okay.

"The plan for the final is just to execute. World record? I don't know, we'll see."

The six-time Olympic gold medallist, who also has five world gold medals, has three Jamaican teammates in the final for company: Nesta Carter, Nickel Ashmeade and Kemar Bailey-Cole.

They will be joined by Rodgers and his US teammate Justin Gatlin.

The fastest losers going through to the eight-man final were Briton James Dasaolu and Frenchman Christophe Lemaitre.

Gatlin, 2004 Olympic champion and double world sprint champion in 2005 but who then served a four-year doping ban, had the running of his heat after a false start by China's Su Bingtian, coming home easily in 9.94sec, with Carter taking second in 9.97.

Dasaolu sped off in heat two but was tracked down by Ashmeade, who clocked a personal best of 9.90sec.

Bailey-Cole nabbed second in another personal best of 9.93sec, with Dasaolu timing 9.97.

"I am just relieved after the shocker I had yesterday. I wanted to come out and do myself justice," said Dasaolu.

In the same heat, French hope Lemaitre and Zhang Peimeng were both credited with crossing the line in 10sec flat, a Chinese national record for the latter but still not enough to reach the final. - AFP, August 11, 2013.

Moyes unveils United blueprint in Community Shield stroll

Posted: 11 Aug 2013 08:22 AM PDT

August 11, 2013
Latest Update: August 11, 2013 11:34 pm

With Alex Ferguson's glorious reign consigned to the history books, David Moyes unveiled his blueprint for a new era at Manchester United in Sunday's 2-0 voictory over Wigan in the Community Shield.

Some disjointed displays on the club's pre-season tour to Asia and Australia, followed by Friday's loss to Sevilla, had given the impression of a United squad struggling to adapt to their new manager's demands following Ferguson's retirement.

But there was enough invention and pace on display from the champions at Wembley to suggest Moyes will stay true to the attacking principles so well established by Ferguson over 26 and a half years at Old Trafford.

With FA Cup winners Wigan now plying their trade in the second tier after last season's relegation, it was difficult to draw too many definitive conclusions from Moyes' first significant outing as United manager.

One thing is certain. As Wayne Rooney tries to engineer a move to Chelsea, Moyes desperately needs Robin van Persie (pic), scorer of both United's goals, to stay fit if the Scot is to challenge for major honours.

Moyes sent out United in a 4-3-3 formation similar to the shape he used at Everton, but it was a far from rigid approach and allowed his attacking players plenty of room to improvise.

With Michael Carrick and Tom Cleverley patrolling the central midfield areas with quiet authority, Ryan Giggs - nominally the third midfielder - had freedom to either drift wide or get forward to link up with the front three.

Van Persie started as the most central of those three, with Wilfried Zaha, the £15 million signing from Crystal Palace, lined up on the right flank.

Danny Welbeck began on the left, but played centrally alongside van Persie for long periods.

Ferguson was more of a 4-4-2 man for much of his reign, but United's fluid movement when they took the lead in the seventh minute showed they should have few problems working in the system.

Giggs came into a central position and flicked a backheeled pass to van Persie, who dropped deep into midfield to take possession before spreading play wide to left-back Patrice Evra.

Evra whipped over a cross to the far side of the penalty area and, with Wigan's defenders distracted by the forward runs of Welbeck, Zaha and Giggs, van Persie timed his incursion perfectly, arriving completely unmarked to power a header past Scott Carson.

United's supporters were getting their first look at England winger Zaha, who inspired Palace to win promotion to the Premier League before completing his move to Old Trafford in the close-season.

The youngster offered a few tantalising glimpses of his talent with his nimble footwork, while also earning a rebuke from Giggs for over-elaboration when a backheel went astray.

United were able to coast along without hitting top gear for long periods, although the evergreen Giggs, approaching his 40th birthday, seemed to thrive in the new-look shape.

And van Persie's second goal just before the hour, featuring a quick interchange of passes between Cleverley and Welbeck and ending with a deflected strike by the Dutch forward, suggested there is no reason to fear a major decline in the Moyes era. - AFP, August 11, 2013.

Long-lost Orson Welles film turns up in Italy

Latest Update: August 11, 2013 03:57 pm

American director, Orson Welles.American director, Orson Welles.A long-lost silent film directed by Orson Welles in 1938 has been recovered from a warehouse in northeastern Italy, where it will be screened in public for the first time in October.

"Too Much Johnson" was originally intended to be shown as a prologue to a slapstick comedy at the Mercury repertory theatre in New York, but it was never finished.

Until staff at the Cinemazero art house cinema in Pordenone, Italy found the work print in a warehouse earlier this year, it was thought the only known copy was lost in a fire that gutted Welles' home near Madrid in 1970.

How it wound up in Italy "is still a mystery," said Kellie Fraver, spokeswoman f or the George Eastman House museum of film and photography in Rochester, New York state, which announced its recovery on Wednesday.

What is known is that all but one of the reels were in relatively good shape - and the exception was brought back to life by experts in the Netherlands, without resorting to digital help.

The restored copy of "Too Much Johnson" will get its world premiere on October 9 at the Giornate del Cinema Muto silent-film festival in Pordenone, with a US premiere to follow a week later at George Eastman House.

"Holding in one's hands the very same print that had been personally edited by Orson Welles 75 years ago provokes an emotion that's just impossible to describe," said George Eastman House film curator Paolo Cherci Usai.

Best known for the 1941 classic "Citizen Kane" and, in 1938, the science fiction radio drama "The War of the Worlds," Kane was a co-founder of the Mercury Theatre. He died in Los Angeles in 1985 at the age of 70. - AFP/Relaxnews, August 11, 2013.

Bollywood’s ‘humble’ King Khan enjoys life as global star

Posted: 10 Aug 2013 04:50 PM PDT

Latest Update: August 11, 2013 03:50 pm

As Indian cinema celebrates its 100th birthday, its biggest modern-day star Shah Rukh Khan has no doubt about Bollywood's growing global popularity -- nor of his own worldwide fame.

"With all humility, I would like to say I have been fortunate to be part of Indian cinema and films which have somehow opened up new territories," the actor known in India as "King Khan", told AFP in an interview.

"Humbly put, I am a global star. They like me all over the world." In a career spanning three decades, the 47-year-old has made himself the biggest box office draw in Bollywood as the hero of romantic dramas and high-octane action movies.

It is a career that has coincided with increasing popularity for Bollywood movies outside of the Indian sub-continent.

Khan's latest movie, "Chennai Express", which opens in India this weekend, will play to cinemas in countries such as Peru, Morocco, Israel and Germany as well as more established markets such as Britain and the Gulf states.

The big budget action-comedy, whose release has been timed to coincide with the festival of Eid, has been sub-titled into nine languages besides Hindi.

Khan says he is more than happy to travel around the world to promote Indian cinema, which made its first movie in the silent era in 1913 but now pumps out almost 1,500 films a year in various languages.

"If I go to Peru, I will talk about Indian cinema and maybe the way I talk -- with hope and pride -- appeals to people," Khan told AFP at his home in Mumbai, the capital of Bollywood.

"Maybe the kind of films I do have more of an appeal to an international audience for Indian films than others," he added.

Khan's promotional tour for "Chennai Express" took him around India as well as to Britain and Dubai.

"As long as I can, I would like to help take Indian cinema global. You cannot sell something to someone who doesn't want it. If they like this film, more films will go there and that helps increase business."

In "Chennai Express", Khan's character falls in love with the daughter of a mob boss while on a train journey from Mumbai to the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu.

Khan, who has appeared in more than 70 Bollywood movies after starting out in television, says he chooses his roles based on his "state of mind".

"Now that I have done a comedy, my state of mind is to play a bad guy," he said. "I believe that's how an actor should decide what he wants to do: have fun with the people who are making the film and only then can you make the audience happy."

His popularity is such that he now has almost 4.6 million followers on Twitter, although he says it is now a forum on which he is unwilling to open up about his personal life.

"Actually I have a love-hate relationship with the analysis of my status updates and tweets," he said.

"Things are taken out of context, so I have decided not to share anything personal. I talk about my work and generic things.

"Some days I feel very social, on other days I feel unsociable and I like to keep it like that. I like most of the people on my Twitter. The ones I don't love, I ignore."

Khan says he is still upset at how he felt forced into announcing the premature birth of his son AbRam, who was born to a surrogate mother, after rumours circulated of an illegal pre-natal gender test.

"It broke my heart to write that note. As decent, educated and nice as it sounded, it was not how I was feeling at that time," he said.

"I did not want to do it. Why should I have to explain what is going on in my home, with my child who is prematurely born? When you are passing through a difficult time it is not nice to have to explain."

As a movie star, an owner of the Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket team the Kolkata Knight Riders and as a businessman (his company Red Chillies has co-produced "Chennai Express"), Khan's life is constantly subject to scrutiny. Fans often gather outside his Mumbai mansion hoping for a glimpse of the actor who built his brand as the romantic hero of films such as "Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge" and "Om Shanti Om".

Despite having to live life under a spotlight, Khan says that he enjoys stardom. "You work so hard to become a star that you have to work harder to enjoy it," he said.

"I love the amount of people that love me, the crowds that collect, the controversies, the responsibilities I have, the success and even the failure. "It's an exciting life. Better than a 9-6. I don't know what's going to happen tomorrow, so it's a great life." - AFP/Relaxnews, August 11, 2013.

Tourists seek simple life in France, but can’t give up mobiles

AFP pic courtesy of Diane KirkwoodAFP pic courtesy of Diane KirkwoodAt a remote spot deep in the French countryside, Britons Bob and Diane Kirkwood have created an eco-friendly refuge (pic) that is like taking a step back in time.

Music comes courtesy of an old Decca 66 record player and a selection of 1978's. Oil lamps and candles supply the lighting and if you want the Internet you'll have to make the trek into the nearest town.

Tourists have long flocked to France in search of the rural dream.

But the Kirkwoods have taken things one step further, offering holidaymakers the chance to live without mains electricity, flush toilets, mobile phone or Internet access.

Tapping into the modern day nostalgia for a simpler, less hectic existence, the Kirkwoods' holiday cabins in the Perigord-Limousin Natural Regional Park in southwestern France are an antidote to the "24/7" lifestyle of many visitors.

"It all happened by accident really... there's no work around here so you have to find something to do," Bob Kirkwood said by telephone from his home near the small town of Piegut.

The couple fell in love with the natural beauty of the area and its slower pace of life during a short visit there in 2000.

"It's all just forests really and very backward farming. I mean, it's not unusual to see people ploughing with horses," he said.

Astonished by the then rock-bottom cost of property in the area, which Bob calls a "real backwater", the Kirkwoods bought a house as a holiday home and after spending the summer there, decided to stay permanently.

When a nearby piece of land with a lake came on the market, they bought it and converted an old shack into a bolt-hole for themselves.

But because of the isolated nature of the spot, Bob found he had to turn himself into an expert on off-grid living.

"We didn't go into this because of green issues," says Bob, 50, a carpenter by trade.

"It was just that you can't run electricity or other services to this class of building because they're so remote.

"So we had no alternative really other than to find ways of generating a bit of power and it all led from there."

Bob began by buying a car battery and "seeing what could be done with it".

Now, the Kirkwoods' cabins – two of their own and a third that they converted and manage for British television celebrity Kate Humble – boast compost toilets, wood-burning stoves for heating and hot water and solar powered lamps for lighting, although Bob and Diane prefer candles or oil lamps.

The popularity of the cabins took the couple by surprise.

After they finished the first one, they set up a website with a view to occasionally letting it. Every year more and more people come, said Bob.

Far from putting people off, the lack of facilities and creature comforts are their main attraction.

"There's nothing going on round here really. There's no buses or taxis and we're about an hour from the nearest big road," he said. "If you want to do e-mailing one of the bars in town has got a WiFi spot."

Now, over a decade since they settled permanently, the simpler life remains as much as a draw as it ever was for the Kirkwoods.

Bob never throws anything away and regales readers of his blog with thrifty, "make-do-and-mend" tales of recycling shrunken jumpers into cushion and hot water bottle covers.

Visitors, however, can struggle with the idea of disconnecting totally from the outside world, in particular giving up their mobile phone.

"It seems people can't let that go. I wish they could and leave the things at home but they can't," Bob added. – AFP, August 11, 2013.

– Bernama, 11 Ogos 2013.
