Fico Eataly World is set to convert unused warehouses in Bologna, Italy into an 80,000–square-metre food emporium mecca that will include restaurants, grocery stores, food labs and an aquarium, reports The Wall Street Journal.

The $40 million (RM131.3 million) project is a joint partnership between Eataly – which in the US is fronted by celebrity chef Mario Batali – and the municipality of Bologna.

The project is slated for completion in 2015 to coincide with Expo Milano 2015, when Italy will take the international spotlight and vaunt its merits as a cultural and travel destination.

According to the latest statistics out of the UN, Italy received 46.4 million international tourists in 2012 to be the fifth most visited country in the world.

Jerantut set to become starfruit producer

Jerantut is set to become a starfruit (scientific name: averrhoa bilimbi) producer in Pahang when a cluster farming pilot project involving three villages starts harvesting next year.

Member of Parliament for Jerantut Ahmad Nazlan Idris said 3,000 high yielding averrhoa bilimbi seeds worth RM30,000 were provided for free to Kampung Gintong, Bukit Puas and Tebing Tinggi smallholders to plant on a 125ha of land which they owned.

He said the initiative enabled the smallholders to increase their income as averrhoa bilimbi was a main ingredient in many Pahang traditional dishes, particularly 'sambal hitam'.

"We hope the cluster farming will enable local residents to sell averrhoa bilimbi or process it into black paste for the local market," he said, adding that the project would be extended to other villages in the district.

He said averrhoa bilimbi was relatively easy to grow as it did not require painstaking cultivation. – Bernama, March 3, 2014.
