Cibulkova romps into quarters in Malaysia

Posted: 17 Apr 2014 09:02 AM PDT

April 18, 2014

Top seed Dominika Cibulkova stormed past Hsieh Su-Wei today at the BMW Malaysian Open for her WTA-leading 22nd match win of the year, passing Li Na and Agnieszka Radwanska.

Cibulkova, who is the Slovakian world number 10, came out like a house on fire as she stormed through the first set despite another rain-delayed day.

Just like in her first round match against Turkey's Pemra Ozgen, she had a slight hiccup, allowing Taiwan's tennis hero Hsieh to win two games in a row to make it 2-2.

But the 25-year-old Cibulkova bounced right back, winning four games in a row to end it, 6-1 6-2 in just over 70 minutes.

Cibulkova had been tied for WTA-level match win leader for the year with Li and Radwanska at 21, but is now the stand-alone leader.

And with three more rounds potentially, she could go as high as 25 wins here.

Awaiting Cibulkova, who is seeking her fifth career WTA Tour title, in the quarter-finals will be number six seed Zarina Diyas, who won her second round match on Wednesday.

Meanwhile second seed Zhang Shuai of China overcame a second set blemish to reach the quarter-finals.

Zhang Shuai, the world number 45, notched her second straight win over Hong Kong's Zhang Ling 6-3, 4-6, 6-0 to set-up a quarter-final match against Poland's Magda Linette on Friday.

In the first set, Zhang Shuai, the reigning Asian Games women's singles champion, started impressively – breaking Zhang Ling's serve twice for the advantage.

However the Hong Konger turned the tide in the second set, relying on her serve-and-volley style to level proceedings.

Zhang Shuai, who won her first tour title in Guangzhou last year, tightened her game and broke Zhang Ling's serve three times for the third set win.

It will be Zhang Shuai's second quarter-finals appearance this season having reached the semi-finals in Acapulco in February.

"The humidity affected my game today," she said.

Turkey's Cagla Buyukakcay achieved her first ever quarter-finals appearance following an impressive performance in the second round.

The world number 150, who has won two International Tennis Federation titles this season, easily outpaced world number 134 Tadeja Majeric of Slovenia 6-4, 6-4 in only her sixth appearance in the main draw of a tour event.

Kuala Lumpur often experiences heavy rain that has marred play on all four days so far.

The tournament was also dealt an early setback when former world number one Venus Williams pulled out, reportedly due to a throat infection. – AFP, April 17, 2014.

Bale delivers his magical moment for Real Madrid

Posted: 17 Apr 2014 07:33 AM PDT

April 17, 2014

It took the best part of eight months and 84 minutes, but on Wednesday night Gareth Bale (pic) began to repay the reported world record fee Real Madrid paid to bring him from Tottenham Hotspur last September.

With the clock running down and Madrid tied at 1-1 with eternal rivals Barcelona in the Copa del Rey final, Bale set off on a stunning individual run and finish to hand Madrid the trophy for the 19th time.

The goal was the Welshman's 20th of the season, but until his crowning moment at the Mestalla there was a sense that he had failed to perform when it really mattered in the biggest games.

Afterwards, a beaming Bale appeared before the world's media happy to admit that winning his first trophy as a Madrid player had been the highlight of his career to date.

"It is a dream come true," he said.

"It feels amazing. It is my first trophy and hopefully the first of many."

However, the 24-year-old wasn't as amazed as most about the run and finish that tilted the game in Madrid's favour, having scored in similar fashion for Wales against Iceland back in March.

Bale set off down the left wing and despite Marc Bartra pushing him well off the side of the pitch, he galloped through on goal to slot low past Jose Manuel Pinto.

"I actually scored a similar goal for Wales not too long ago when I ran off the pitch. I was just trying to get round him and get on the ball.

"I haven't seen it back, but I was just focused on trying to get to the ball and score."

The pages of the Spanish sports pages today paid homage to Bale's strength and power as Madrid daily Marca recreated his 58 metre run at an average speed of 27 kilometres an hour on its front page.

Inside he was christened "Gareth Bolt" thanks to a burst of pace reminiscent of Jamaican sprinter and six-time Olympic gold medallist Usain Bolt.

Madrid's other sports daily AS led with "Bale brings the bullet", whilst he was also roundly believed to have won his personal head-to-head with Barca's Brazilian star Neymar in the battle of last summer's big money buys.

Bale's teammates were also in awe as he sped away to mark a memorable night for Los Blancos with World Cup winner Xabi Alonso claiming he had "never seen anything like it".

And Real assistant boss Paul Clement hailed Bale's stamina to be able to make such a decisive burst at that stage for the match.

"I think it just shows what an incredible athlete he is," said the Englishman.

"He has great ability technically but that just shows what immense power and strength he has – so late in the game too.

"To be 84 minutes in and to produce that kind of run was quite incredible.

"He was a key player tonight and he has just shown what talent he has. He is a world class talent, no question about it." – AFP, April 17, 2014.

Study shows young women see sexual assault as ‘normal’

Posted: 16 Apr 2014 10:21 PM PDT

April 17, 2014

Many girls who are sexually assaulted may not see themselves as victims and most do not report acts of sexual violence as they regard them as "normal", Press Trust of India (PTI) reports citing a new US study.

In the study, sociologist Heather Hlavka at Marquette University, US analysed forensic interviews conducted by the Children's Advocacy Centre (CAC) with 100 youths between the ages of three and 17 who may have been sexually assaulted.

The young women provided insight into how some youths perceived their experiences of sexual violence and harassment during sexual encounters with men.

The findings reveal that girls and young women rarely reported incidents of abuse because they regarded sexual violence against them as normal.

According to the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network (RAINN), 60 of sexual assaults are not reported to police, researchers said.

Hlavka found that the young women in the study experienced forms of sexual violence in their everyday lives including sexual harassment, objectification and abuse which they often rationalised as normal.

During one interview, referring to boys at school, a 13 year-old girl said: "They grab you, touch your butt and try to, like, touch you in the front and run away, but it's okay, I mean I never think it's a big thing because they do it to everyone."

The researcher's analysis led her to identify several reasons why young women do not report sexual violence.

Girls believe the myth that men cannot help it, researchers said.

They said the girls interviewed described men as unable to control their sexual desires, often framing men as sexual aggressors and women as gatekeepers of sexual activity.

The girls perceived everyday harassment and abuse as normal male behaviour and as something to endure, ignore or manoeuvre around, said the researchers.

Many of the girls said that they did not report the incident because they did not want to make a "big deal" of their experiences.

They doubted if anything outside of forcible heterosexual intercourse counted as an offence or rape.

Hlavka said the girls seem to have internalised their position in a male-dominated, sexual context and likely assumed authority figures would view them as "bad girls" who prompted the assault.

She found that girls do not support other girls when they report sexual violence.

The young women expressed fear that they would be labelled or accused of exaggeration or lying by both authority figures and their peers, decreasing their likelihood of reporting sexual abuse.

The study appears in the journal Gender & Society. – Bernama, April 17, 2014.

A fetish for full body suits in Japan

They are part of a small subset in Japan with a fetish for wearing outfits called 'zentai' or 'full body suit'. – AFP, April 17, 2014.By day, she is a mild-mannered office clerk, whose modest make-up and conservative hairstyle make her blend in to any crowd.

By night, she dresses in a skin-tight, all-in-one Spandex body suit that covers everything – including her eyes – and sits in bars, alone but liberated, she believes, from the judgement of others.

"With my face covered, I cannot eat or drink like other customers," said the woman, who is in her 20s and says her name is Hokkyoku Nigo (North Pole No. 2).

"I have led my life always worrying about what other people think of me. They say I look cute, gentle, childish or naive," she said, her lips ruffling the tight, red shiny material.

"I always felt suffocated by that. But wearing this, I am just a person in a full body suit."

Hokkyoku Nigo is part of a small subset in Japan with a fetish for wearing outfits called "zentai" – an abbreviation of "zenshintaitsu", which means "full body suit" – who say they are seeking liberation by effacing the physical self.

Some meet through internet forums and through gatherings like the Tokyo Zentai Club, whose ten members get together every other month, just like any other group, to hold barbecues or parties. Unlike any other group, they are covered head-to-toe in skintight Lycra.

"I was always fascinated by hero costumes as a child," said member Hanaka, 22, who was introduced to the club by her 25-year-old boyfriend, Popo.

"When I was 13 or 14, I even tried to make a full-body suit myself, sewing stockings together. But I stopped, thinking maybe I was doing something weird.

"I was really happy when I finally found out on the internet that there were people like me out there," said Hanaka, who always comes to Tokyo Zentai Club events with Popo.

Invisible touch

While the hobby is a long way from being mainstream in Japan, a country with an unsurpassed ability to dream up slightly off-the-wall pastimes, it makes occasional appearances in popular culture.

Among the most prominent was a movie of comedy vignettes that each focused on common but crushingly awkward social situations that were resolved through a conversion to zentai wearing.

In one, a recipe-blogging housewife who is a victim of bullying by a group of homemakers gives up the fight against the over-bearing leader and finds liberation in a circle of zentai lovers.

And in seeming homage to the superheroes whose unspoken presence informs adherents' costume choices, a young man dressed as a Power Ranger made headlines in Japan after it was revealed he hangs around at the entrance to a subway station to help young mothers carry their baby buggies down stairs.

While some might have good deeds on their minds as they slip inside their suits, others acknowledge there is something sexual about the practice.

"I like to touch and stroke others and to be touched and stroked like this," said a 36-year-old teacher, Nezumiko.

"Once you are in one of these suits, you can feel the person, instead of looking at them.

"I am not a lesbian, but I wouldn't mind being with a woman like this... In zentai, it is a completely different kind of sensation from straight sex."

'Erasing' appearance

Academic Ikuo Daibo of Tokyo Mirai University said zentai fans seems to be groping for a different way of expressing their own identity.

"In Japan, many people feel lost; they feel unable to find their role in society," he said. "They have too many role models and cannot choose which one to follow."

He said they take solace from the erasing of their outward appearances and say they believe it offers a way for people to get to know others as they are, rather than because of how they look.

"In a way, they are trying to expose their deeper self by hiding their own identity," said Daibo. "I find it a very interesting way of communication."

Alice Omori, 40, a practitioner for around 20 years who now runs an Internet-based tailoring service for fellow zentai fetishists, agreed.

"You can feel so good and happy just by wearing this," he told AFP as he stood in his custom-made suit, cut to cleave tightly to the outline of his head, hands, penis and feet.

"You can savour more mentally-fulfilling communication with others," he said. "It is such a wonderful thing." – AFP, April 17, 2014.

Cannes film festival launches race for 2014 Palme d’Or

The 2014 Cannes film festival will be held from May 14 to 25, 2014. – AFP pic, April 17, 2014.Cannes film festival organisers unveiled their pick of the A-listers and art house "auteurs" chosen to take part in this year's movie extravaganza on the French Riviera today.

Of the hundreds of films submitted each year, only around 20 are rewarded with a coveted slot in the official line-up of films invited to compete for the top Palme d'Or prize.

Festival artistic director Thierry Fremaux will end months of speculation when he reveals the movies that have made the cut in a ceremony in Paris.

Hollywood stars predicted to tread the red carpet this year include Ryan Gosling, Robert Pattinson, Tommy Lee Jones and Meryl Streep although organisers never give anything away and always like to keep plenty of surprises up their sleeves.

European cinema could be represented by the Dardenne brothers and Ken Loach while Abderrahmane Sissako from Mauritania, Apichatpong Weerasethakul from Thailand and Tetsuya Nakashima from Japan are among the others who could be in with a chance.

Held almost every year since 1946, the festival is famed as much for launching the careers of filmmakers such as Steven Soderbergh and Quentin Tarantino as for its glitzy red carpet photo calls, luxury yachts, star-studded parties and diamond heists.

And behind the scenes film industry executives and producers turn the festival into a huge marketplace as they cut deals to secure a share in the next big movie event.

So far just two films have been announced for the May 14-25 festival although neither will be screened in competition.

"Grace of Monaco", starring Nicole Kidman as the former Hollywood star Grace Kelly, will open the festival on May 14, while "Party Girl", a French film about an ageing night club hostess, will open the "Un Certain Regard" new talent section.

Even before its release, the royal biopic has been making headlines with the film likely to be boycotted by Grace's children Prince Albert and Princesses Caroline and Stephanie who have dismissed it as a work of "pure fiction".

Based around the late Prince Rainier, played by British actor Tim Roth, and Grace, who died in a car crash in 1982, it tracks events at a time when France was threatening to annex the tiny principality on its southern coast.

A disagreement between the film's French director Olivier Dahan and American producer Harvey Weinstein over the editing of the movie, meanwhile, has resulted in rival versions being made.

"There are two versions of the film – mine and his – which I find catastrophic," the director said earlier.

The row leaves open the question of which man's movie will be shown in Cannes and supplies a dash of controversy – a traditional component of the world's biggest film festival. – AFP, April 17, 2014.

Japan virtual star Hatsune to join Lady Gaga tour

Posted: 16 Apr 2014 09:36 PM PDT

April 17, 2014

Hatsune Miku, a computer-generated Japanese pop star who performs as a hologram, is to support some of Lady Gaga's tour of North America next month, the US songstress has announced on Twitter.

The pixel-perfect pop princess, whose voice is also the product of digital code, will perform in 3D alongside a band made of real musicians at shows starting in Atlanta on May 6.

"My favourite digital pop star Hatsune Miku is opening The ARTPOP Ball from May 6-June 3!" @ladygaga said on her Twitter feed.

"Look at how cute she is!," she added, with a link to YouTube video showing the digital diva in action.

The collaborative brainchild of software developers, a manga comic artist and a vast digital fan community, the virtual singer from outer space has become one of the hottest stars on the J-pop scene in the last few years.

The programmers who created Miku are vague about her persona, but very specific about her stats – the teenage pop queen is 158 cm tall and weighs a dainty 42 kilograms.

Hatsune's turn on tour with Lady Gaga, one of the biggest names in American music thanks to a flamboyant style that blends elements of David Bowie with Madonna, comes ahead of support by fellow Asian superstars CRAYON POP.

The South Korean girl group topped the K-pop charts last year when their danceable ditty "Bar Bar Bar" – featuring their signature helmets and piston-style line dancing – went viral on YouTube.

The five-piece are set to join Lady Gaga for the second half of the North American section of the tour, playing more than a dozen gigs.

The ARTPOP Ball tour heads overseas in August, with dates in Japan, South Korea, Australia, and much of Europe. – AFP, April 17, 2014.

Gara-gara MH370, China renggang dengan Malaysia

Posted: 16 Apr 2014 05:16 PM PDT

April 17, 2014

Tetapi China patut bersabar sebelum bertindak merenggangkan hubungan dua hala.

– 17 April, 2014.
