Chelsea have backup plan if Rooney chase fails

Posted: 20 Aug 2013 09:05 AM PDT

August 21, 2013

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho (pic) has drawn up a contingency plan in the event he fails to land his number one target, Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney, before the transfer window closes on September 2.

The Europa League holders have already had two big-money offers for the unsettled England international rejected and Mourinho hinted after Sunday's 2-0 win over Hull City that he would eventually make a third attempt to sign Rooney.

"We have Plans B and C," the Portuguese told a news conference on the eve of today's home game against Aston Villa in the Premier League.

"Don't ask me names because it's difficult to speak about players from other clubs. We have the conditions to try to improve our team by bringing in one more player and we are going to try that till the end."

Chelsea will again be without Brazil defender David Luiz because of a hamstring problem but Spain midfielder Juan Mata is hoping to feature after missing the opening game of the season against Hull.

The club's player of the year for the last two seasons has been troubled by a thigh injury but said he was now ready to return.

"I didn't train for a few days but I came back, worked with the physios and on Thursday last week I trained with the first team, not at 100 per cent but trying to get to my best," Mata said.

"Now I feel better and I am looking forward to playing and starting my season."

UNUSED SUB

Mata was an unused substitute against Hull and said he was impressed with Chelsea's performance, especially in the first half when they scored twice and missed a penalty.

"It was a very good start," the Spaniard added. "The first 30 minutes were amazing.

"The team pushed, pressed and recovered the ball very high (up the pitch) and scored two goals. It could have been even more and we played well."

Eden Hazard was one of the standout performers in the opening 45 minutes against Hull but Mourinho is demanding more from the talented young Belgium playmaker.

"I know what I want from him – I want more responsibility and I want more ambition because when you are a normal player you have to be happy when you perform okay," the Chelsea manager said.

"When you have top talent (like Hazard) you cannot waste that talent so I want to give him that ambition to be better and better and to express himself on the pitch match after match, not be up and down."

Mourinho's comments evoked memories of his first spell in charge at Stamford Bridge between 2004 and 2007 when he regularly took Joe Cole to task in an attempt to achieve a high level of consistency from the skilful England midfielder. – Reuters, August 21, 2013.

United bids for Everton duo are waste of time, says Martinez

Posted: 20 Aug 2013 07:21 AM PDT

August 20, 2013

Manchester United's approach for two leading Everton players is a waste of time, the Merseyside club's manager Roberto Martinez (pic) said today.

The Spaniard's comments came the day after the club's director of communications Alan Myers branded the bids for Belgium midfielder Marouane Fellaini and England defender Leighton Baines as "derisory and insulting".

"It's been well documented what happened with the transfer speculation, that's been dealt with and it was all a little bit of a waste of time – time I don't want the players to waste," Martinez told Everton Television.

He questioned whether the transfer window should even still be open when the season was underway, echoing the views of Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew who yesterday was angry about the timing of an approach by Arsenal for midfielder Yohan Cabaye.

"I'm not a big believer in having the window open while the games are starting," Martinez said. "I think the start of the season was important for us at Norwich (a 2-2 draw) and I won't come out now and carry on talking about the speculation.

"When there is something to tell our fans we will do that – they'll be the first ones to know if there are any players coming in or any players going out.

"But I don't believe in getting involved in the transfer window when the games are underway and we are in a very, very important moment of our season," said Martinez.

"We're trying to find our feet, we've got a good start under our belts, we've got real competition for places and we've got the visit of West Brom at the weekend."

According to media reports United, now managed by former Everton boss David Moyes, offered a total of £28 million for Fellaini and Baines.

United, who began their title defence with a 4-1 win at Swansea City on Saturday, are yet to make a significant transfer-window signing with their public pursuit of Barcelona's Cesc Fabregas so far coming to nothing. – Reuters, August 20, 2013.

Endangered Giant Ibis found in new Cambodia habitat

Posted: 19 Aug 2013 11:12 PM PDT

August 20, 2013
Latest Update: August 20, 2013 02:53 pm

Jubilant conservationists expressed hope today for the survival of the critically-endangered Giant Ibis after a nest of the bird species was discovered in a previously unknown habitat in northeastern Cambodia.

Habitat loss and poaching has pushed the Giant Ibis to the edge of extinction, with around only 345 of the reclusive creatures – distinctive for their bald heads and long beaks – left anywhere in the world, 90% of them in Cambodia.

A farmer in Cambodia's Stung Treng province discovered the nesting site a few kilometres inland in the biodiverse Mekong Flooded Forest area last month, the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) said in a statement.

An inspection team from the WWF later saw an adult bird sitting on the nest with two eggs.

"The discovery of the Giant Ibis nest on the Mekong is extremely significant because it provides hope for the species' survival," said Sok Ko, Forestry Administration official and Bird Nest Project officer with WWF.

The Giant Ibis – or Thaumatibis gigantea – was listed on the red list of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) in 1994 as critically endangered, the group said, with its habitat limited to Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam.

"For Giant Ibis to survive... it is key to secure breeding groups in more places. This one nest is part of securing the future for the species," Gerry Ryan, WWF's Research Technical Advisor.

The group warned that threats remain as the species' lowland forest habitats continue to be drained and stripped for agriculture, while its eggs are sometimes poached by villagers.

But conservation efforts in the Mekong area where the nest was discovered have brought some reward, Ryan added.

"Giant Ibises don't like to be disturbed and are very shy – they tend to live far from human settlements," he said.

"The presence of Cambodia's national bird is further proof that efforts in managing and conserving the area and its biodiversity are worthwhile and having an effect." - AFP, August 20, 2013.

“Oblivion” director to head up “The Twilight Zone” remake

Posted: 19 Aug 2013 04:58 PM PDT

August 20, 2013
Latest Update: August 20, 2013 08:16 am

Now that Matt Reeves has declined the position of director, Joseph Kosinski could take the reins on this ambitious project, produced by Leonardo DiCaprio for Warner Bros.

The project that has been on Leonardo DiCaprio's mind since 2007, a remake of "The Twilight Zone," could become a reality.

The legendary 1960s TV series, which has been updated for TV several times (one show in 1985 and another in 2002, starring Forest Whitaker), came to the big screen in a 1983 feature, co-directed by Joe Dante, Steven Spielberg, George Miller and John Landis.

The actor appears to be in negotiations for Joseph Kosinski to direct a new adaptation of the cult TV series, created by Rod Serling in 1959. Matt Reeves, who was initially courted to direct DiCaprio's pet project, had to step down to focus instead on "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes," the much anticipated sequel to "Rise of the Planet of the Apes."

According to the last available pitch for the "Twilight Zone" adaptation, which dates from over one year ago, the film will open on an astronaut who, upon returning from his mission, realizes that almost a century has gone by on Earth since his departure.

It remains to be seen whether the new director and producer plan to stick to this plot.

Joseph Kosinski rose to fame in 2010 with another daring adaptation, that of the cult film "Tron," produced by Disney in 1982. His film "Oblivion," starring Tom Cruise, was released earlier this year. - AFP/Relaxnews, August 20, 2013.

Global box office: “Elysium” takes lead followed by “Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters”

Posted: 19 Aug 2013 04:21 PM PDT

August 20, 2013
Latest Update: August 20, 2013 03:21 pm

The Matt Damon blockbuster is on top of the weekly ranking at the end of its second week in theaters, bringing in $37 million in 42 territories, according to Rentrak.

Meanwhile, the historical drama "Lee Daniels' The Butler" saw a successful launch in the US and Canada.

The sci-fi epic "Elysium," with Matt Damon and Jodie Foster, has ascended to the top of the global box office.

After two weekends in theatres, Neill Blomkamp's film has brought in more than $95 million in worldwide revenues.

Hot on its heels is the second instalment of the adventures of Percy Jackson. The fantasy film took in $30.2 million in the week leading to August 18, for a total of $75 million since its release.

While "The Smurfs 2" and "The Wolverine" continued to fare well, bringing in $24.6 million and $15.2 million respectively last weekend, both were surpassed, somewhat surprisingly, by a subtle and intimate historical drama.

"Lee Daniels' The Butler," starring Forest Whitaker, brought in $25 million during its first weekend in North American theaters.

In fourth place in the global box office ranking, the feature explores the life of a black butler in the White House who observes eight presidents come and go over the course of his career.

Out exclusively in the US and Canada for the time being, the film will be released in additional territories in the coming weeks. - AFP/Relaxnews, August 20, 2013.

Akibat silap kira 1,823 undi, DAP dalam dilema

Posted: 19 Aug 2013 04:13 PM PDT

August 20, 2013

Keputusan 15 Disember sememangnya menghampakan Rahmad.

– 20 Ogos, 2013.

Kuasa roboh surau tertakluk pada MAIJ, kata Jamil Khir

Posted: 20 Aug 2013 02:37 AM PDT

OLEH DIYANA IBRAHIM
August 20, 2013

- 20 Ogos, 2013.

Aktivis mahasiswa rancang demonstrasi bantah CCRIS PTPTN

Posted: 20 Aug 2013 02:00 AM PDT

OLEH MOHD FARHAN DARWIS
August 20, 2013

– 20 Ogos, 2013.
