Cole and Cahill back to ease Chelsea workload

Posted: 19 Apr 2013 08:04 AM PDT

April 19, 2013

LONDON, April 19 — Defenders Ashley Cole and Gary Cahill have returned to training after injury, Chelsea interim manager Rafa Benitez said today as he prepared for an "emotional" return to former club Liverpool.

The pair will be assessed on Saturday and could play some part at Anfield on Sunday as Chelsea continue their hectic schedule with their seventh game in 19 days.

Cole (hamstring) has not played since the FA Cup replay victory over Manchester United on the first day of the month while centre back Cahill (knee) has not featured since the middle of March.

"It is good news," Benitez (picture), who has been rotating his squad during the fixture pile-up, told reporters.

"We have had Gary Cahill and Ashley Cole training today so that was really positive.

"There are no problems apart from Oriol Romeu, the rest of the squad is fit. Maybe it is too early, but we will see tomorrow after another training session."

Chelsea bounced back from Sunday's FA Cup semi-final defeat by Manchester City at Wembley with a 3-0 London derby victory at Fulham on Wednesday, regaining third place in the Premier League as they look to secure a top-four finish and Champions League football next season.

The fixtures continue to come thick and fast with Chelsea facing a two-legged Europa League semi-final against Switzerland's FC Basel with the away leg on Thursday.

They also have a tough start to the final month of the season when they go to Old Trafford to play Manchester United on May 5, then host London rivals Tottenham Hotspur, also battling for the Champions League spots, four days later.

"The game against Fulham was very important. We needed to be sure we were back in the top three and now every game will be important," Benitez added.

"It's Liverpool now. If we can get three points, we are in the top three, and hopefully it will be the same until the end. I don't see the fixtures of the other teams, just our next game.

"We have enough quality and experience in the squad. We have good momentum so we'll try to keep this."

Benitez is looking forward to coming against the side he managed between 2004 and 2010.

He twice reached the final of the Champions League and won Europe's elite club competition in unforgettable style in 2005 when his Liverpool team came back from 3-0 down to draw 3-3 with AC Milan and triumph on penalties.

"I am a professional so I will try to do my best to achieve the targets here," he said of his Chelsea focus.

"I have a lot of friends and good memories so it will be emotional, but I will try to concentrate on the game and do my best for 90 minutes." — Reuters

City count on United getting the jitters

Posted: 19 Apr 2013 08:01 AM PDT

April 19, 2013

MANCHESTER, April 19 — The shock of losing last year's title at the last second could derail Manchester United's charge to this season's crown, according to Manchester City assistant Brian Kidd.

With United 13 points clear at the top and able to secure the title as early as Monday, it might sound like the defending champions are clutching at straws but after the manner in which they won it last year they have good reason not to give in.

City clinched their first league title since 1968 when they scored twice in stoppage time to beat Queens Park Rangers 3-2 and win the championship on goal difference from United, who had finished their final game thinking they had done enough.

"There will be some jittery moments," said Kidd, a former assistant to Ferguson at United who was standing in for City manager Roberto Mancini at the club's regular Friday news conference.

"With what happened last year - it was a bad experience for them, I believe they will have been shocked by it.

"It's not over until it's mathematically finished with."

Kidd's message differs from the one Mancini has been giving as the Italian has said several times the title race is over and it certainly will be if City lose at Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday and United beat Aston Villa on Monday.

Kidd went as far as to say that City could still do a domestic double of league and FA Cup, although even the most optimistic fan would think they have much more chance of the latter when they face Wigan Athletic in next month's final.

"It could turn out a great season for Manchester City," said Kidd, who had spells at both United and City as a player. "We would win the league and we could win the Cup, what a great season.

"We've got a group of players that you can trust and I think both teams, Manchester City and United, can go to the end of the season without losing but both teams can drop points as well.

"You've got to be in the slipstream if the team above you drop points."

City, who made up eight points in six games on their way to the title last year, travel to fifth-placed Tottenham with doubts over David Silva and Sergio Aguero, who have hamstring injuries.

"To drop eight points in six games, nobody thought that could have happened this time last year but it did," Kidd said. "There's stranger things in football."

United have 81 points from 33 games, with City on 68 from 32. — Reuters

Creater of iconic Pink Floyd’s album cover dies aged 69

April 19, 2013

The iconic Pink Floyd's 'The Dark Side of the Moon' album cover. - AFP picLONDON, April 19 — British graphic designer Storm Thorgerson, best known for designing the iconic cover of Pink Floyd's 1973 classic album "The Dark Side of the Moon", has died aged 69, his family announced yesterday.

More recently, Thorgerson created the artwork for records released by Scottish rockers Biffy Clyro, British stadium band Muse and Australian dance-rock outfit Pendulum.

He was a childhood friend of Pink Floyd's founding members before becoming its design chief. His most famous creation featured a prism of glass dispersing light into its component colours.

His family revealed he was surrounded by relatives and friends at the time of his death.

"He had been ill for some time with cancer though he had made a remarkable recovery from his stroke in 2003," said a family statement.

"He is survived by his mother Vanji, his son Bill, his wife Barbie Antonis and her two children Adam and Georgia."

Pink Floyd guitarist and vocalist Dave Gilmour said the artworks were "an inseparable part of our work".

"We first met in our early teens," he added. "We would gather at Sheep's Green, a spot by the river in Cambridge and Storm would always be there holding forth, making the most noise, bursting with ideas and enthusiasm. Nothing has ever really changed.

"He has been a constant force in my life, both at work and in private, a shoulder to cry on and a great friend. I will miss him."

A statement on the Pink Floyd official site added: "We are saddened by the news that long-time Pink Floyd graphic genius, friend and collaborator, Storm Thorgerson, has died.

"Our thoughts are with his family and many friends." – AFP-Relaxnews

Jewish life, not death, the focus of new museum in Poland

Posted: 19 Apr 2013 05:23 AM PDT

April 19, 2013

The view of the main hallway of the newly constructed building of the Museum of the History of the Polish Jews designed by architect Rainer Mahlamaki and located in the former Warsaw's Ghetto, April 16, 2013. - Reuters picWARSAW, April 19 — A new museum of Jewish history opens in Poland this week to refocus attention on a vibrant community that has lived in the country for centuries but whose history, for many, has been eclipsed by the Nazi death camps that nearly wiped them out.

Every year some 1.5 million people visit Auschwitz, the Nazi death camp in southern Poland which has become a grisly emblem of the holocaust.

Yet in the Polish capital there is little evidence of what was for generations one of Europe's biggest Jewish communities - just a couple of memorials down quiet streets, and a synagogue tucked away in a court-yard behind Communist-built high-rise apartment blocks.

The Museum of the History of Polish Jews in Warsaw will try to educate people about the community's rich past, and, say its curators, might also help dispel some of the suspicion towards Jews that still now - seven decades after the Holocaust - lingers in parts of Polish society.

"I want this museum to be a museum of life, not a museum of death," said Andrzej Cudak, acting head of the museum.

The museum, the first of its kind in Poland, is on a street that used to be part of the Warsaw ghetto. At the front, the building's undulating walls split apart, to symbolize the rupture of the holocaust.

It opens its doors on Friday, 70 years to the day since groups of young Jews in the ghetto, with scavenged or improvised weapons, launched an uprising against German troops. It was crushed about a month later.

For now the museum will have only temporary exhibits, but once it is fully up and running next year, it will house artifacts chronicling the 1,000-year history of Jews in Poland.

"This is not going to be another holocaust-type museum," said Robert Supel, a project director at the museum.

One of the eight galleries will be devoted to the holocaust, he said, "but primarily we are talking about life, we are talking about culture, we are talking about the exchange of influence of nations, we are talking about all aspects of Jewish life in Poland since the early medieval period."

LOW-KEY COMMUNITY

Before World War Two, more than three million Jews lived in Poland. By the end of it, 90 per cent of them were dead.

The museum will become the most visible symbol in Warsaw of a Jewish presence which is strikingly low-key.

Other eastern European capitals where Jews were exterminated have seen a limited revival of their Jewish communities since the end of Communist rule two decades ago.

But only 7,500 Jews live in Poland, according to a census conducted in 2011, though the real figure is probably higher. In the capital, there are few synagogues left. It is rare to see anyone in the street wearing a yarmulke or the fedora of an orthodox Jew.

Anti-Semitic attitudes could be part of the reason for this low profile.

There is no anti-Semitism in public life in Poland, unlike nearby Hungary where one far-right member of parliament last year called for lists of Jews to be compiled. The Polish government helped pay for the museum.

Nevertheless, low-level anti-Semitism is present, from soccer chants where fans use the term "Jew" as an insult hurled at rival supporters, to the graffiti on suburban walls.

A poll conducted last month by the Homo Homini public opinion institute found that half of Warsaw high-school students would be unhappy if they discovered someone in their family had Jewish origins.

Sixty per cent of young people would be displeased if their boyfriend or girlfriend turned out to be Jewish, according to the survey.

The poll was commissioned by the Jewish Community of Warsaw, one of the country's biggest Jewish groups.

Its head, Piotr Kadlcik, said he hoped the new museum would shine an objective light on how Poles and Jews have co-existed through history.

"Let's not think that the museum will be a panacea for all the problems we have with Polish-Jewish relations," Kadlcik said.

"But if it helps just in part, that will be a success." – Reuters

Oprah, Usher, Mayer honour Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees

Posted: 19 Apr 2013 03:05 AM PDT

April 19, 2013

Oprah Winfrey speaks during the induction of Quincy Jones at the 2013 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony in Los Angeles April 18, 2013. — Reuters picLOS ANGELES, April 19  — A star-studded crowd gathered to celebrate the 2013 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees yesterday, as Oprah Winfrey and Usher gathered to pay homage to the likes of Donna Summer, Quincy Jones, Randy Newman and Rush.

Disco queen Summer, producer Jones and comedy-rock singer Newman were inducted along with Canadian progressive rock band Rush, blues guitarist Albert King, hip hop pioneers Public Enemy, rockers Heart and veteran producer Lou Adler.

Television personality and media mogul Winfrey, who said she was discovered by veteran R&B producer Jones when he cast her in "The Color Purple" in 1985, praised his decades-long career, during which he launched stars such as the late Michael Jackson.

"He defines the word legend, he is remarkable and everybody knows it," Winfrey said.

"I continue to be amazed at what goes on in his head ... he's of this time and so far ahead of this time," she added as she present Jones, 80, with his induction trophy.

"Queen of Disco" Summer, who died last May aged 68, was inducted by singer Kelly Rowland, who praised Summer's career for paving the way for female artists

"Her words remind us of exactly who we are," she said.

Newman, 69, kicked off the night with "I Love LA", joined on stage by musicians Tom Petty, Jackson Browne and John Fogerty and later performed his songs "I Think It's Going to Rain Today" and "I'm Dead" with former Eagles member Don Henley.

Henley, who inducted Newman, criticised the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for its delay in including Newman, calling it "one of those inductions long overdue, in fact, shamefully overdue."

Newman was less critical, saying he was "glad" to be inducted while he was still alive.

"I always wanted to be respected by musicians ... it means a great deal to me that the people I respect are giving me respect," Newman said.

TRIBUTE TO THE BLUES

Grammy-winning singer-songwriter John Mayer paid homage to late pioneering American blues guitarist Albert King, who died in 1992 aged 69.

"The blues is in every undercurrent of the music that I play ... Albert is forever embedded in that music," Mayer said.

Seattle rockers Heart, fronted by sister duo Nancy and Ann Wilson, were inducted by Chris Cornell and performed their hits "Barracuda" and "Butterfly".

"Equality is coming right along. For us, music is the real church, it's a life calling, it's bigger than men and women put together, music makes us all equal and human," Nancy said.

Canadian progressive rockers Rush had the largest number of fans in the Nokia theater, receiving rousing standing ovations as they were inducted by Foo Fighters' Dave Grohl and Taylor Hawkins.

The night's longest speech went to Public Enemy's eccentric rapper Flavor Flav, who giggled and rambled as he talked about the influence of his group's music.

Public Enemy - comprising rappers Flavor Flav, Chuck D, Professor Griff and DJ Lord - were influential in bringing a political and social conscience to hip hop in the 1980s.

"We all come from the damn blues. Let's not get it twisted. We studied the forms of music in DJ culture ... we've always known and paid respect to where music comes from," Chuck D said.

The hip hop collective also sampled music from Summer, Jones and Rush as they performed their tracks "Bring The Noise", "911 is a Joke" and the seminal "Fight The Power".

To be eligible for induction in 2013, a candidate must have released their debut album or single at least 25 years earlier. The ceremony will be televised on HBO on May 18.

The eight inductees were chosen by some 500 voters of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation, which includes past inductees and for the first time, allowed fans to vote. — Reuters

Montreux jazz festival draws Prince, Sting, Marcus Miller

Posted: 19 Apr 2013 12:29 AM PDT

April 19, 2013

Mathieu Jaton with this year's poster after the presentation in Lausanne. — Reuters picLAUSANNE, April 19 — Prince, Leonard Cohen and Marcus Miller will headline the Montreux Jazz festival in July, expanded by the opening of a third concert hall "Lab", organisers said yesterday.

Cohen will open the 47th edition of one of Europe's most prestigious summer music events, on July 4, and give a second concert the following night.

Prince was already booked for three back-to-back evenings (July 13-15) at the festival running from July 4-21, the first since the death of founder and director Claude "Funky" Nobs in January after a skiing accident.

"Three nights, three shows, he's back. It is a huge honour," festival director Mathieu Jaton said at a news conference in Lausanne. "We never know what Prince will do, or who he's coming with, but we're used to his incredible surprises."

Tickets for Prince — ranging from 175 Swiss francs (RM572) to 395 francs — are already sold out, while all others go on sale this morning (0800 GMT)

Other highlights include Sting on the 16th, the electronic group Kraftwerk on the 17th, Diana Krall on the 18th and Joe Cocker on the 20th.

For blues fans, Bonnie Raitt opens on the 11th for Ben Harper and Charlie Musselwhite. Brian May of Queen fame and Deep Purple appear on the 19th and are likely to jam, says Jaton.

Claudia Leitte headlines the traditional Brazilian night on the 12th, along with Tulipa Ruiz and Gal Costa.

Miller, a top American bass player injured in a bus accident in Switzerland in November, returns to the Montreux stage on the 21st, opening for an 80th birthday concert for Quincy Jones.

"Quincy is transforming his birthday part into an homage for Claude," Jaton said, noting that the legendary Los Angeles-based producer served as co-director of the festival in the 1990s.

"Wyclef Jean is returning, last time he carried Claude Nobs on his shoulders at a concert that went on to four o'clock in the morning. It's a wink to Claude to have him back," he added.

American comeback musician Sixto Rodriguez, enjoying a second career at age 70, will inaugurate the "Lab" on July 4, a new venue with a capacity of 2,000.

"Searching for Sugar Man", a film by Malik Bendjelloul that won the Oscar for Best Documentary this year, chronicles an amazing bid to find the mysterious Detroit-based Rodriguez who shot to fame in South Africa but remained unknown in America.

Rodriguez made only two albums in the early 1970s, "Cold Fact" and "Coming from Reality". His poetic lyrics about the drug scene and poverty are tinged with "anti-establishment blues" and led to a cult following in apartheid-era South Africa — which he learned of only decades later.

The festival along Lake Geneva, whose two traditional venues are the larger Stravinski Auditorium and more intimate Miles Davis Hall, draws some 250,000 music fans each year. — Reuters

DAP CEC dilemma will prove Malaysians’ maturity

Posted: 18 Apr 2013 05:51 PM PDT

April 19, 2013

Zan Azlee is a documentary filmmaker, journalist, writer, New Media practitioner and lecturer. He runs Fat Bidin Media www.fatbidin.com

APRIL 19 — The decision by the Registrar of Societies (RoS) not to recognise the DAP's central executive committee, or CEC, is a surprising move indeed even if it is an issue that has been talked about before this.

Why did the RoS decide to do so only two days before Nomination Day when it had earlier already decided that investigations would be postponed till May 9?

As far as perception goes, this would actually make it look as if the decision taken by the RoS is a politically-motivated one that would benefit the caretaker Barisan Nasional government.

If this is the case, then it would make full sense for the DAP not to challenge the decision and play the "victim" card to gain sympathy and turn the situation around for their own benefit instead.

Also, this decision by the RoS would mean that the DAP would have no recognised leaders to authorise their members to use the party logo during the election.

DAP secretary general Lim Guan Eng has already declared, with the agreement of the PKR and PAS leadership, that DAP members can run under the other two parties' logos.

But there are implications to this decision if it were indeed to be taken.

There has always been the dilemma of the Chinese community really accepting PAS or not, and through the Pakatan Rakyat coalition, a vote for DAP would really mean a vote for PAS.

If the DAP were to run under the green moon logo, this would highlight the dilemma even more, and this could cause the Chinese DAP voters to be more conscious of it.

And this would be a disadvantage for Pakatan Rakyat.

But then again, there is also the opposite dilemma where Malay supporters of PAS might not feel comfortable voting for the DAP because it is considered a Chinese non-Muslim party,

And if these Malay voters don't see the rocket logo, they might just feel more comfortable in having to cross the box next to whatever Pakatan Rakyat component logo appears on the ballot paper.

And this would be an advantage for Pakatan Rakyat.

But all this is of the assumption that Malaysians are still looking at race-based politics. And I would like to think that my fellow countrymen have reached a higher maturity level.

Ideally, I would like to believe that this crisis or challenge that has emerged at the eleventh hour as something that will show the true spirit of Malaysia.

The true spirit of Malaysia where we are truly a multiracial and multireligious society that can look past our ethnic and spiritual differences in order to focus on what is important.

By forcing the DAP to run in the election under different logos would mean forcing Malaysians to accept that these different parties are now really banding together for a greater cause.

So there might just be a silver lining to this thick shroud of grey clouds suddenly appearing in Malaysian politics that would mean that Malaysians have indeed matured.

Taking the rural voter for granted

Posted: 18 Apr 2013 04:49 PM PDT

April 19, 2013

Kapil is an advertising strategist based in KL, who likes nothing better than to figure out why people behave the way they do. Naturally this forces him to spend most of his time lounging in coffeeshops and bars. He can be reached at [email protected]

APRIL 19 — Most political pundits are predicting a close race between Barisan Nasional (BN) and Pakatan Rakyat (PR) in the upcoming general election. In part, this is explained by the urban popularity of PR being neutralised by the deep hold BN has on the rural vote.

It somehow seems that this is as real a factor as the rich-poor divide, the Malay-non- Malay divide, the young-old divide and the conservative-liberal divide. In actual fact, the rural-urban divide as a predictor of electoral outcomes is misplaced.

While how old we are, how much money we make, what our religious beliefs are and what our take on corruption is are all factors that help determine who we vote for, whether we live in a kampung or in KL is losing its impact on how we vote.

Firstly, there just aren't that many people in rural Malaysia any more. According to a World Bank report published in 2012, the rural population of Malaysia was at 27.8 per cent of the total in 2010, declining at an annual rate of 1.65 per cent, the fastest in a decade.

Typically, migration is a business undertaken by the young. As they get access to information and develop more sophisticated worldviews, these are shared with their families during balik kampung.

Simultaneously, household broadband penetration reached 61.5 per cent of all households by October 2011 as reported by The Edge, with rural areas especially targeted under the Universal Service Provision project.

Increasingly, whether through the Internet or as in the case of rural Sarawak through distribution of free radios, the rural population has access to alternative political news and views.

The world is brought even closer with the improvement in physical infrastructure like roads and rail, improved access to air connectivity, advances in literacy, higher education and modern healthcare.

While there is unevenness in the delivery of all of these, depending on a myriad of factors including corruption and their relative importance in terms of population metrics, it is clear that rural Malaysians are able to close the information gap at a much faster pace today with their urban cousins.

With this access to competing ideas, it seems baffling that politicians still continue to believe that the rural voter will continue to vote the way they have in the past just because pre-election handouts have worked in the past and politicians have been able to make voters believe that they should be grateful for whatever the government of the day has done for them, it has decreasing resonance today, in tandem with the rise in access to information across the political spectrum.

Of course, there will always be voters who are resistant to change, are genuinely grateful for the opportunities provided to them and have seen a steady improvement in their material condition, just as there are voters who believe a lot more could have and can be done with reduction in corruption, a better educational system and an end to race-based politics.

But the battle for the hearts and minds of voters is much more likely to be a product of this competition of ideas than that on where they live.

Politicians would be much better off tailoring their messages on a different set of attributes predicated on their social and economic situation rather than merely those of geography.

Otherwise, with time running out there could be a lot of bloody noses in rural constituencies this general election.

* This is the personal opinion of the columnist.

Mahkamah tolak permohonan Azmin, Chegubard

Posted: 19 Apr 2013 03:26 AM PDT

April 19, 2013

Hakim Mahkamah Tinggi Kamardin Hashim memutuskan bahawa permohonan Azmin tidak mempunyai merit. - Gambar fail

– Bernama
