Chef Alex Atala, Brazil’s taste ambassador

From an almost accidental start in the business — he took a cooking class in Belgium in order to get his visa extended — Atala is using his star status to promote Brazilian food and defend sustainable production.

"Cooking is a mix of magic, alchemy and exact sciences," Atala told AFP in an interview at his award-winning D.O.M. restaurant in his native Sao Paulo.

Atala grew up in suburban Sao Paulo. As a punk youngster, he experimented with drugs and embraced tattoo art.

At age 45, he still cuts a rebellious figure, with his numerous tattoos and graying red beard. When asked what remains of his edgy youth, he says enthusiastically, "Everything!"

But with success — D.O.M. ranked sixth this year on the British magazine Restaurant's list of the top 50 eateries — has come some mellowing.

"Life forced me to mature. Cooking gave me method and discipline," said Atala, clad in his crisp white chef's attire.

In his late teens, Atala went backpacking across Europe. In Belgium, he painted houses to make money and when his visa was about to expire, he enrolled in a cooking class in order to extend his stay.

He began his culinary training at the age of 19 at the Ecole Hoteliere de Namur. He later headed to France and Italy to widen his repertoire.

In 1994 he returned to Sao Paulo, having learnt one lesson.

"I realized that I would never be able to cook Italian food like an Italian chef. But I could distinguish myself as a Brazilian chef with recipes and ingredients of my country," he notes.

In 1999, Atala opened D.O.M., which stands for Deo Optimo Maximo (or "To God, most good, most great") and is viewed as the best restaurant in South America.

The menu there notably features unconventional ingredients that includes palm heart fettuccine; pirarucu (Amazonian fish) with tucupi (traditional Brazilian sauce from wild manioc root); and banana ravioli with passion fruit sauce and tangerine sorbet, as well as insects burnished like jewels. An eight-course dinner cost around $250 (RM802.75).

"The Amazon is the new frontier of taste. Its richness and possibilities are infinite," says Atala. "Everybody knows the word Amazon, but nobody knows the taste associated with it."

In 2009 Atala opened his second restaurant, Dalva e Dito, also in Sao Paulo, to critical acclaim.

He has also worked in advertising and runs the ATA foundation, which champions the indigenous people and produce of the Amazon.

Atala says he likes to eat street food, especially Brazil's popular fried empanadas.

As a child, he used to go fishing and hunting with his father and grandfather, and he says he is trying to resurrect such memories by promoting an "emotive cooking".

Time magazine included Atala on its 2013 list of the 100 most influential people in the world. Fellow chef Rene Redzepi described him in his introduction as "the most dedicated person in his field".

"Selflessly, he has surrendered to the enormous task of shaping a better food culture for Latin America. His philosophy of using native Brazilian ingredients in haute cuisine has mesmerised the continent," wrote Redzepi, a Dane whose restaurant Noma in Copenhagen tops the World's 50 Best Restaurants list.

A restless traveller, Atala attends conferences around the world, cooks in Chile or Singapore and occasionally treks into the Amazon rainforest in search of exotic new tastes.

He insists that Brazil is a country "which still has a lot to show" if it decides to follow the example of countries such as Peru, which have learnt to promote their cuisine.

"Food is the best link between nature and culture... The modern chef and many of us today have become disconnected from the original ingredients."

During a recent event in Denmark, Atala was criticised when he killed a hen in front of his audience, but he dismissed the issue.

"Today, a chef sparks a controversy if he kills a hen, but our grandparents did this routinely. They used the feathers to make pillows and the legs for other things. They made full use of everything.

"At the same time, there is a lot of waste in the food business. We need to rewrite this story and value life, vegetable or animal," notes Atala, who says he likes to spark debates.

Atala has three sons from two marriages and says that if he had not pursued a culinary career, he might have become a veterinarian or a biologist. - AFP, November 22, 2013.

Beaujolais Nouveau - fruity fun but uncertain future

As ever, the reviews were mixed for the purply-pink "primeur" wine that the vignerons of the Beaujolais country in eastern France rush to market within a few weeks of harvest, often having been fermented in only a few days.

With many of them facing an uncertain future against a backdrop of declining demand, Beaujolais producers had promised a particularly fruity drop this year.

And French intellectual Bernard Pivot, who tapped the first barrel of the new vintage on the stroke of midnight in the region's capital Beaujeu, was willing to back their claims.

"I must admit I was a little afraid because the harvest was late but in the end it is very precocious," Pivot told AFP after enjoying his first few gulps.

"Robust — with notes of blackberries and raspberries. There is maybe even a little bit of cherry in there."

In reality, Beaujolais Nouveau is a love-it-or-hate-it sort of drink. With its bananas-to-bubblegum range of flavours and its sharp (fans say crisp) acidity, the variations in quality between different years are unlikely to change opinions too drastically.

"More of an event than a drink," is the sniffy view of Hugh Johnson, the veteran British writer whose annual pocket guide is the world's biggest-selling wine book.

This year's promotional stunts ranged from the cerebral — a Beaujolais-themed poetry competition at Moscow wine store Otdokhni — to the surreal — Brussels' most famous statue, the Manneken Pis, was peeing the wine instead of water.

In its home market, Beaujolais Nouveau has suffered in recent years from the wider decline in wine drinking, tighter controls on drink driving and its association with hard-to-forget hangovers.

But Cedric Vallance, manager of the Louis D'Or bar in central Paris, does not feel it has fallen out of fashion.

"Maybe the 50-plus crowd are a bit fed up with it but the young still appreciate the festive side of Beaujolais Nouveau. All the tables we have booked tonight are by people in their 30s. It is a party wine."

In the United States, Beaujolais Nouveau — which hits the market in time for the Thanksgiving holiday — is a reason for the Alliance Francaise, which promotes French language and culture abroad and has 114 chapters in the US, to throw soirees from coast to coast.

Its Washington DC branch is hosting a "Beaujolais and Beyond Celebration" at the French embassy today that will also include "light fare from DC restaurants".

On Wednesday, the Local Vine Cellar, a wine shop off Pennsylvania Avenue between the White House and Capitol Hill, threw an "Anti-Beaujolais Nouveau Celebration" to spotlight what it called "the complex side of Beaujolais", with tastings of such crus as Morgon, Fleurie, Julienas and Chenas.

In the Japanese spa town of Hakone, west of Tokyo, Nouveau enthusiasts enjoyed the now-established ritual of bathing in a mix of spring water and the tipple.

"It may shock some people but there is no reason why it should," said Thibault Garin, a vice president of French merchants Laboure-Roi.

"The bath is not actually filled with wine (only a few symbolic bottles are put in and colouring is added to make the water a vivid purple). The point is the show."

Japan is the young wine's biggest export market, having knocked back 8.8 million bottles of the stuff last year.

With the Japanese market already a mature one and sales in Europe stagnating or falling, Beaujolais producers are looking to the rest of Asia to pick up the slack.

In China, which is Beaujolais's sixth-biggest export market, one Beijing bar offered "Revolutionary Songs" along with its wine-tasting.

Even in Muslim-majority Indonesia, where only a small proportion drink alcohol, a little piece of France came to a Jakarta mall, with an area of La Piazza decked out like a French street cafe in honour of the new vintage.

Although the production of a young wine before the end of the year is a long-established tradition in Beaujolais and many other wine areas, Nouveau and its associate hype only took off in the 1970s. It now accounts for about 30% of the region's annual output of around 100 million bottles.

But there are some in the industry who feel it has created confusion about the Beaujolais brand, to the detriment of the region's long-term interests.

Despite increasingly positive critical reviews, producers of regular Beaujolais are now struggling, with many vineyards in and around celebrated villages like Brouilly or Moulin a Vent being ripped up as their elderly owners reach retirement age.

"Beaujolais is in a dire situation," says wine marketing guru Robert Joseph. "It is neither fun enough nor serious enough." - AFP/Relaxnews, November 22, 2013.

Carroll return date still a mystery for shot-shy West Ham

Posted: 21 Nov 2013 08:30 AM PST

November 22, 2013

Goal-shy West Ham United still have no idea when record signing Andy Carroll will be able to return from a foot injury.

The London club, only out of the relegation zone on goal difference, host Chelsea on Saturday with manager Sam Allardyce (pic) admitting he is in the dark about Carroll's fitness.

The 24-year-old, who has not played a game for the club since signing for 15 million pounds (RM77.5 million) from Liverpool in June after a spell on loan, has been receiving treatment in Amsterdam since injuring his right foot in training in September.

"We are trying to get a date out of the guys in Amsterdam, but they are reluctant to give us any clear indication of when he's going to be able to join us back here and start training with the squad and getting back into the team," Allardyce told a news conference.

"It's a worry and concern for us and one we have to make sure we deal with.

"To take the pressure off us, we need results that we haven't achieved in the first 11 games."

West Ham have the best defensive record outside the top seven, but a meagre nine goals in the league has left them hovering dangerously close to the relegation zone.

Allardyce has named a striker-less line-up in recent games and suggested his side's hard-working approach this season could upset a Chelsea team 'vulnerable' after their recent loss to Newcastle United and draw with West Bromwich Albion.

"Creating chances will be at a premium, so we have to be clinical enough to take them when we get them," he said.

"If we can do that, as Newcastle showed a few weeks ago, we can frustrate Chelsea and win the game. That game showed there is a vulnerability there and if your team masters its tactics, you can beat a team as big as Chelsea." - Reuters, November 21, 2013.

Greece saved Romania from World Cup forfeit

Posted: 21 Nov 2013 08:20 AM PST

November 22, 2013

An act of sportsmanship by Greece coach Fernando Santos (pic) and team director Takis Fyssas saved Romania from the possibility of a forfeited 3-0 defeat in the first leg of their World Cup playoff last week, they claimed on Thursday.

The Greeks said they alerted Romanian officials before the game in Athens after they named only two goalkeepers because first choice Ciprian Tatarusanu was injured and not included in the squad list.

Under FIFA rules, any 23-man squad for an official game must include three goalkeepers. The oversight was missed by FIFA officials at the time.

Greece won the game 3-1 and clinched their place in the finals after drawing 1-1 in the second leg on Tuesday.

"With so much at stake - participation in a World Cup and the financial gains for the Greek FA which comes with that -- we could have ignored their error and taken the result, but it was important to do the right thing," Fysass told Greek radio SportFM.

"I preferred to qualify on the pitch rather than on paper."

Bogdan Lobont started in goal with Costel Pantilimon on the bench in the first leg last Friday with the Romanians adding an outfield player as the third keeper to keep within the rules.

Fysass's faith in his team was justified with two goals from Konstantinos Mitroglou and one from Dimitrios Salpingidis helping them to a 3-1 win in Athens. A 1-1 draw in Bucharest in the return saw Greece through to next year's finals 4-2 on aggregate.

Tatarusanu returned for the second leg with both Lobont and Pantilimon named among the substitutes. - Reuters, November 21, 2013.

The Voice produces hits, not stars

Posted: 21 Nov 2013 06:58 AM PST

November 21, 2013

In May, two months after the release of his song "Blurred Lines," pop singer Robin Thicke performed it on NBC's TV singing contest "The Voice."

That performance with collaborators Pharrell Williams and rapper T.I. helped catapult his single 42 spots to No. 12 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart the following week. It tripled the previous week's downloads to 206,000. The song rose to No. 1 on the chart in June for a 12-week run in the top spot.

Although "The Voice" may not be the most-watched singing contest on television and has yet to launch a star of its own, the show has become one of the music industry's most coveted promotional platforms with its influence outpacing Fox rivals "American Idol" and "The X Factor," music and TV experts say.

"It continues to be a launching pad and a shot of steroids for certain songs," said Joe Levy, editor of trade magazine Billboard whose annual poll of industry experts published this week showed a big jump in influence for the show.

He points to the recent performance by one of its judges, Christina Aguilera, singing "Say Something" with pop group A Great Big World. It helped the song claim the top spot on Billboard's digital songs chart last week.

"The Voice," which airs twice a week and draws about 12.7 million viewers per episode, ranked as the sixth-best venue for promoting music up from No. 37 in 2012, according to the magazine.

Meanwhile, a live performance on "American Idol," which can still best "The Voice" in attracting viewers, fell to No. 60 from No. 17, and Simon Cowell's "The X Factor" did not make the list of 75.

"The Voice" made the list twice. When a contestant performs an artist's song, that type of promotion was good enough for No. 56 on the list.

Part of the winning mixture for "The Voice" and the music industry has been the show's ability to distinguish itself as a music-first competition where everyone plays nicely, Levy said.

"'The Voice' is about professionals," he said. "It's about building or restarting careers. 'Idol' hews closer to its talent-show roots and people react to the fact that 'The Voice' is positive."

That is an unusual characteristic in the reality TV landscape where much of the focus is on conflict. Part of the appeal that "American Idol" built when it drew more than 30 million viewers for its finale in peak years of 2006-07 were its "jaw-dropping" failures, Levy said.

Another key to the success of "The Voice" has been one of the problems that has plagued "Idol" and "The X Factor" in recent years: getting the personalities on the judging panel right, said Eric Deggans, the TV critic for National Public Radio.

The show's panel is led by Maroon 5 singer Adam Levine (pic) and country singer Blake Shelton in both fall and spring seasons, while singers Christina Aguilera and CeeLo Green serve in the fall, and Colombian pop star Shakira and R&B singer Usher in the spring.

"What people like about 'The Voice' is that the judges, at least on camera, get along," Deggans said, noting that ratings for "The Voice" tend to dip as the season moves along and the focus is put more on the contestants.

"When they've tweaked the show, they've tweaked the show to keep them involved for longer throughout the competition," Deggans added.

"Idol" and "The X Factor" have suffered in part because of strife or poor chemistry on their panels on which they spend tens of millions of dollars in salaries, Deggans said.

Pop singer Britney Spears received poor reviews for her lack of interest while on "The X Factor" last year, and a feud between judges Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj ran throughout "Idol's" spring season. All three judges have since left.

Although "Idol" can still command more for advertising rates than "The Voice," David Campanelli, a senior vice president at Horizon Media, said the NBC contest has been able to capture the popular culture buzz its rival once had.

"If it was all things equal, you'd pick 'The Voice' because people are talking about that, and you want to associate your brand with that." - Reuters, November 21, 2013.

Owen Wilson and Pierce Brosnan safe after fire on Thai set

Posted: 20 Nov 2013 10:57 PM PST

November 21, 2013

Hollywood A-listers Owen Wilson and Pierce Brosnan were unharmed after a fire on the set of a film they are shooting in northern Thailand, a production company and police said Thursday. Wilson, who starred in "Midnight in Paris", and former James Bond Brosnan had just finished Wednesday's shoot for the action-thriller "The Coup" when the fire broke out in a three-storey shophouse being rented for the film in the town of Lampang.

"Neither Owen Wilson nor Pierce Brosnan or (co-star) Lake Bell were anywhere near the set when the fire broke out... it was after wrap so none of our actors were there," said Chris Lowenstein of production company Living Film, which is helping the shoot.

"No-one was injured in the fire" which broke out in the ceiling, he added.

The scene had involved "air mortars with dust, cork and debris" but not "explosions, fire or other pyrotechnics", he said.

Local police said the fire is suspected to have started after special effects were used in the shoot.

"Forensic police are examining the place to find the actual cause," according to Police Colonel Thanakorn Khumwong.

The plot of "The Coup" pivots on an American family trapped in a Southeast Asian country in the middle of a military uprising.

Thailand has experienced nearly 20 military coups or attempted coups since it became a constitutional monarchy in 1932. – AFP, November 21, 2013.

Iran window shops at airshow in hope of sanctions relief

Posted: 21 Nov 2013 07:31 AM PST

November 21, 2013

Senior Iranian aviation executives were at the Dubai Airshow in a discreet campaign to update their ageing passenger jets this week, even as Iran negotiated with international powers to ease economic sanctions over its nuclear programme.

Under moderate President Hassan Rouhani, there has been increasing hope the talks in Geneva could secure a breakthrough in the decade-long nuclear stand-off, leading to relief from embargoes that have crippled Iran's airlines.

Iranian airlines are banned from buying new passenger planes from the world's two manufacturing giants, Airbus and Boeing, and limp on through purchases from third parties.

Easing the ban on sales of spare parts has been on the agenda of nuclear talks since 2006 and, according to Western diplomats, remains part of a package of sanctions relief if an agreement is reached on curbing Iran's nuclear activities.

The West says the nuclear programme is aimed at developing atomic weapons, but Iran says it is solely for the purpose of power generation and medical research.

Dozens of Iranian executives made private visits to the Middle East's largest aviation show in Dubai this week, their gaze on everything from Airbus's US$400 million (RM1.2 billion) double-decker A380s to smaller essentials such as life jackets, inflight entertainment systems and coffee-makers for catering services.

It is mostly a case of window-shopping, as big purchases are still beyond the reach of Iranian carriers.

"Iran's aviation industry is in desperate need for new planes and spare parts and other technology necessary for travel in Iran and abroad," said Theodore Karasik, research director at Dubai think-tank INEGMA.

"If sanctions are lifted in this industry, it would be an outstanding humanitarian gesture to the Islamic Republic."

A large country rich in natural resources and boasting one of the largest populations in the Middle East, the Islamic Republic would in normal circumstances be a flourishing market for air travel.

Instead, Iran's air industry tells a story of worsening safety, grounded aircraft and fare rises, which in turn are curbing demand.

Some Iranian visitors have negotiated deals at the show, but are reluctant to talk openly, industry sources said.

"There area lot of Iranians here who are interested in all sectors of the industry. The big Iranian airlines are also here to do business," said an Iranian visitor at the airshow who called himself Mr. Fa'al. He works for a servicing and spare parts company in Iran.

"The situation is difficult, but not impossible. We hope it's going to get better under Rouhani, but it depends on whether they accept Iran's nuclear rights," he added.

There are more than a dozen large airlines operating in Iran and several more fledgling carriers. The state carrier Iran Air has a fleet of about 40 planes, including nine Boeing 747 jets, some of which were built before the Islamic Revolution in 1979.

The safety record for the carriers has resulted in most Iranian flights no longer being able to land within the EU.

There were about 14 aircraft crashes involving Iranian planes reported in the decade to January 2011, with hundreds of civilians killed and many more injured.

In October 2011, the pilot of an Iran Air plane averted disaster by landing without the forward landing gear. But for his skill, the tragic statistics could have been worse.

The head of one private Iranian airline recently said most of Iran's passenger planes were out of service.

"More than 60% of Iran's (passenger) airplanes in the country, which have an average age of 22 years, are grounded because of technical and logistical problems," Cyrus Baheri, director general of Iran Airtours airline, told student news agency (ISNA).

Airline officials periodically announce the purchase of second-hand Airbus aircraft, mostly older A320 and A340 models, and are also reliant on Russian-built passengers planes.

The airline sanctions were put in place under President Bill Clinton in 1995. During nuclear negotiations last year, the international powers - United States, Russia, China, France, Britain and Germany - held out the prospect of relief from the airline sanctions if Tehran curbed its nuclear programme.

Since the election of Rouhani, there has been talk of attempts to resume direct flights to the United States.

Earlier this week, the head of Iran's Civil Aviation Organisation, Ali Reza Jahangirian, said everything was ready for the resumption of direct flights and it was a question of waiting for the government's approval.

"We are waiting for the cue from the country's political authorities to put the flight into operation," he said, Fars news agency reported.

However, such statements overlook the myriad issues that need to be ironed out before such a route could be re-established. Safety is likely to be a significant obstacle, as are sanctions that bar all financial transactions between US and Iranian companies, unless given exemption.

Some remain upbeat and await the green light.

"Upon lifting of sanctions there will not only be aircraft orders but various purchases ... a vast spending spree on life jackets for the existing fleet, landing gear, aircraft engines, training and even flight maps, to name a few," said an aviation consultant whose clients include Iranian carriers.

Mahan Air, one of the leading Iranian airlines, said it was hopeful of the ongoing talks.

"We are encouraged by the diplomatic discussions taking place. Sanctions have made the purchase of spare parts and new aircraft challenging," the airline spokesman said. "Hopefully, the easing of sanctions will give us an opportunity to offer more destinations to our passengers." - Reuters, November 21, 2013.

Uganda’s Joseph Kony: altar boy to elusive rebel leader

Combining religious mysticism with an astute guerrilla mind and bloodthirsty ruthlessness, Kony has turned scores of young girls into his personal sex-slaves while claiming to be fighting to impose the Bible's Ten Commandments.

While battling the Ugandan government, he and a dwindling band of expert guerrilla fighters have earned a grim reputation for the abduction of children and mutilation of civilians.

Currently believed to be hiding out in a remote jungle area of Central African Republic (CAR), in recent years Kony has seen his forces dwindle to a few hundred as regional armies - backed by US special forces - have come together to hunt him down.

On Wednesday, it emerged Kony had tried to negotiate food and safe passage from CAR's leader, amid indications he is seriously ill.

Forces of the self-proclaimed prophet, accused of overseeing the abduction of tens of thousands of children, roam border regions between the Democratic Republic of Congo, CAR, South Sudan and Sudan.

In 2005 he - along with four of his deputies - were the first people indicted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague for war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Two of the deputies were later killed.

A member of the Acholi ethnic group, Kony was born in April 1963 in northern Uganda, according to US advocacy group Enough.

After a basic primary school education, he took up arms in around 1987, following in the footsteps of another messianic rebel, Alice Auma Lakwena, a former prostitute who is believed to have been either his cousin or aunt.

Lakwena, who died in exile in Kenya in early 2007, believed she could channel the spirits of the dead, and also told her followers that holy oil she gave them could stop bullets.

Kony claims the Holy Spirit issues orders to him on everything from military tactics to personal hygiene, terrifying his subordinates into obedience.

Lakwena - and then Kony's - rebellion claimed to be defending the Acholi people against President Yoweri Museveni, who seized power from northern military rulers at the head of a rebel army in 1986.

Despite widespread northern resentment against Museveni, Kony's policy of abductions soon lost him the support of local groups, who suffered in the government's brutal war against the LRA.

Hunted by multiple armies

At the height of the conflict, the government had forced some 2 million people into camps.

Kony, 50, who speaks broken English and Acholi, has only rarely met outsiders but in an interview with a western journalist in 2006 he declared that he was "not a terrorist" and had not committed atrocities.

"We want the people of Uganda to be free. We are fighting for democracy," he said.

Despite that, ex-LRA abductees say they were forced to maim and kill friends, neighbours and relatives, sometimes by biting them to death, and participate in gruesome rites such as drinking their victims' blood.

In the mid-nineties, the LRA conflict spilt into neighbouring countries after the Sudanese government in Khartoum began backing the group in retaliation for Uganda's support of southern Sudanese rebels battling for independence.

When Sudan signed a peace deal with the southern rebels in 2005 support for the LRA dried up and, after being forced into neighbouring DR Congo by the Ugandan army, Kony agreed to peace talks.

But negotiations dragged on and, amid mutual distrust and anxiety over the ICC warrant, Kony repeatedly failed to turn up to sign a deal.

In December 2008, the Ugandan army - backed up by other regional armies and US financial support - launched airstrikes against the LRA's bases in Garamba national park in northeast DR Congo.

The attack failed to capture or kill Kony and his top commanders and the LRA splintered into small groups, butchering and abducting its way across a vast area.

In late 2011, following pressure from US campaigners, President Barack Obama deployed around 100 US special forces troops to the area to help regional armies track down Kony.

Kony surged to unexpected worldwide prominence in March 2012 on the back of a hugely popular internet video that called for his capture.

Made by US-based advocacy group Invisible Children, the Kony2012 film became one of the most fastest-spreading internet videos in history after more than 100 million users across the globe clicked on to watch it in just a few days.

Despite the increased pressure, after more than 25 years in the bush Kony remains a master of evasion, ditching satellite telephones in favour of runners to communicate and living off wild roots and animals. – AFP, November 21, 2013.

Authors James McBride, George Packer win National Book Awards

Posted: 20 Nov 2013 08:59 PM PST

November 21, 2013

Writers James McBride and George Packer won National Book Awards, among the most prestigious literary prizes in U.S. publishing, at a gala dinner yesterday that also honoured authors E.L. Doctorow and Maya Angelou. McBride took home the 2014 National Book Foundation fiction prize for "The Good Lord Bird," an exploration of identity and survival during slavery.

It was chosen from a short list of books by authors including Rachel Kushner, previous National Book Award winner Thomas Pynchon, Jhumpa Lahiri and George Saunders.

"I didn't prepare a speech. I really didn't think I was going to be up here tonight," McBride said. "It sure is nice."

Packer won the non-fiction prize for "The Unwinding: An Inner History of the New America," a story about the United States that runs from 1978 to 2012 told through the lives of Americans from varying walks of life.

It competed in a category dominated by historical works by Wendy Lower, Jill Lepore, Alan Taylor and Lawrence Wright.

"This is an incredible honour," Packer said after receiving the prize at the 64th annual National Book Awards. "I feel very lucky to be given this award."

Mary Szybist won the poetry prize for "Incarnadine" and Cynthia Kadohata took home the young people's literature award for "The Thing About Luck."

In addition to the bronze statue, winners will also receive $10,000.

"Ragtime" author Doctorow, 82, received the 2013 Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters for his body of work spanning five decades.

A previous National Book Award winner for fiction in 1986 for "World's Fair," Doctorow was also a finalist in the same category four other times. Previous recipients of the award include Joan Didion, Elmore Leonard and Norman Mailer.

Maya Angelou, whose groundbreaking autobiography "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" is an American classic, was awarded the 2013 Literarian Award for Outstanding Service to the American Literary Community.

"I am delighted," Angelou, 85, said in an interview ahead of the ceremony. "To be given the award for lifetime achievement is really quite a statement."

The finalists in the four categories were whittled down from 1,432 books submitted for the awards, including 408 in fiction and 517 in non-fiction. – Reuters, November 21, 2013.

What’s in that “Fifty Shades of Grey”? Just cocaine, traces of herpes virus

Fifty Shades of Grey. – AFP/Relaxnews, November 21, 2013.Fifty Shades of Grey. – AFP/Relaxnews, November 21, 2013.A pair of Belgian researchers found traces of herpes virus and cocaine lurking in library copies of E. L. James's popular erotic novel "Fifty Shades of Grey."

The professors decided to run the ten most popular books at the Antwerp library through bacteriology and toxicology tests to discover how germy those loaners really are. The novel "Tango" – a romance by Pieter Aspe – also tested positive for herpes.

All ten of the books contained traces of cocaine, but not enough so that readers would feel the effects –  yet due to today's sensitive drug testing methods, they might test positive for the drug, the researchers said.

Still, Jan Tytgat, a professor of toxicology at the Catholic University of Leuven, told the Flanders News website that the traces of both herpes and cocaine were too small to be harmful to readers of the book. –  AFP/Relaxnews, November 21, 2013.

Ulama PAS tolak Hasan Ali, dakwa beliau cuba pecah belahkan parti

Posted: 21 Nov 2013 02:48 AM PST

OLEH MD IZWAN
November 21, 2013

– 21 November, 2013

All is not lost, Malaysia

Posted: 20 Nov 2013 04:23 PM PST

November 21, 2013

As a player, Shebby Singh won everything there was to win in Malaysia football, and represented the country on the international stage.

Asian Cup Qualifying Group D - Malaysia 0 Qatar 1

It was a 100% improvement from the Malayan Tigers as they stepped up the pace and played with more urgency in a must win match against Qatar on Tuesday night, after the disappointing loss to Bahrain last Friday.

The brilliance of Khairul Fahmi in goal meant we stayed in contention for three points until the 65th minute.

The industry of Safiq Rahim and K. Gurusamy has to be applauded while a proper defender in Razman Roslan, albeit still not a natural left footer at left back, added more steel in defence.

A special mention to Amirizwan Taj who is looking like the best Malaysian centre-back we have seen in the last 10 years.

This team needs some tactical nous and a little tinkering with formations as we pretty much have the talent available to step up another level.

The case in point is skipper Safiq Rahim. His skill set is better suited to being a number 10 behind Norshahrul Idlan Talaha and Safee Sali.

However, he expands unnecessary energy in areas where he becomes ineffective to the team; how much of this is down to tactics and strategy we may never know. Switching his role to a pure attacking midfielder certainly leaves the burden of manning central midfield to K. Gurusamy.

Maybe, just maybe, a 4-3-1-2 would be better suited to the talent available. The three in midfield would be Shakir Shaari anchoring with K.Gurusamy and Nazmi Faiz Mansor on either side of him.

This would give the team composure, energy and guile in addition to freeing up Safiq Rahim to play in the hole behind the two central strikers.

Norshahrul and Safee are most effective when playing as a pair, much closer to each other up front. We have not seen these two play as a partnership despite the combination proving so effective in the 2010 AFF Suzuki Cup.

This formation will give us much needed defensive stability, and allow players to play to their strengths, which will translate into positive performances and more importantly, positive results.

In conclusion, the outlook is still positive for me and I dare say that having watched Malaysia play Bahrain and Qatar, I believe there is no true gulf in class between K Rajagopal's boys and their opponents.

WC2014, European qualifying playoff 2nd leg - Sweden 2  Portugal 3

Taking a 1-0 lead to Stockholm was always going to be tricky for the Portuguese, but Cristiano Ronaldo did what he seems destined to do: score.

Meanwhile, Sweden's Zlatan Ibrahimovic was very much lacking in support, just like in the first leg but still managed to grab a brace for himself. To be fair to Ibrahimovic though, he played in a slightly withdrawn role to try to set play up and certainly did much better than Sebastian Larsson ever had his entire career.

Ronaldo's goals were textbook finishing from the forward - brilliant through balls by Joao Moutinho twice releasing Ronaldo who through sheer pace put some distance between himself and his would-be defenders.

The goal count is 66 and counting this calendar year for the Portuguese boy.

Actually, this preference for statistics across a calendar year, when the football season traditionally runs from August till May, baffles me. Perhaps it is due to the FIFA Ballon D'Or award, which makes these stats more significant.

Then again, no trophy is won from August to December other than the odd individual accolade.

All said and done, the Portuguese will certainly bring better players to the World Cup even though it remains to be seen if they can be strong and consistent as a team.

WC2014, European qualifying playoff 2nd leg - France 3 Ukraine 0

Didier Deschamps listened to our laments (partially, at least) and started Yohan Cabaye in what turned out to be a convincing victory for Les Blues over Ukraine in Paris.

Paul Pogba's all-around midfield display was a sight to behold as well. His athleticism complemented by an awareness in positioning and ball control simply belies his tender age.

Samir Nasri, meanwhile, was rightly dropped from the first-team and replaced by Mathieu Valbuena, whose consistency throughout the qualifying campaign makes it even more curious as to why Deschamps decided upon Nasri's starting berth in the first leg in Kiev.

Also, Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema's touch and movement was sublime, offering far more up front than Oliver Giroud did in the first leg.

The big question for the French now must surely be the temperament of the players. We all know what happened in South Africa in 2010. This time though, they have a World Cup winner leading them and expect Deschamps to not tolerate any rubbish.

Still, there remains big decisions to be made on the choice of playmaker and central defensive pairing. I would pick Raphael Varane and one other, with Laurent Koscielny's silly red card in the first leg making his selection a little less certain. - November 21, 2013.
