Gourmet popcorn: Flash in the pan?

Posted: 04 Jan 2012 09:11 PM PST

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 5 — Imagine this: people lining up to pay on average RM16 for a packet of popcorn. Yes, popcorn. And this isn't at the cinema either where an average-sized caramel popcorn sets you back only RM6.90.

Yes, Garrett Popcorn — a Chicago gourmet popcorn chain — opened its first outlet at KLCC here in November and the queues were incredible. People were talking about it on Twitter and Facebook even before it opened.

(The fact that the machines broke down on its test day also made it to Twitter!)

The lunch crowd at the KLCC branch... popcorn for dessert?

While there are no longer long lines of people at the outlets (there is now another Garrett in 1 Utama in Petaling Jaya) — except for public holidays and weekends — Garrett is still talked about. The heavenly, sweet aroma hits you first and most people can't help but look or linger as they watch others queue up for this premium snack.

Available in Plain, Buttery, CaramelCrisp, CheeseCorn, The Chicago Mix, Macadamia CaramelCrisp, Almond CaramelCrisp and Cashew CaramelCrisp, with prices ranging from RM9 to RM229, Garrett Popcorn is the latest food fad to hit town. Move over, bubble tea.

So what is it about Garrett Popcorn that has Malaysians willing to fork out so much money for what has long been thought of as a movie snack? Those of us who frequently go across the border to Singapore would have heard of Garrett Popcorn before this.

Clockwise from the top: CaramelCrisp, The Chicago Mix and Spicy CheeseCorn flavours.

My group of friends, who frequent Singapore for work, used to take turns to bring back packets of cheesy or caramel goodness for each other. When the news broke that Garrett Popcorn was going to open in Malaysia, there were many enthusiastic tweets about it and many wondered if the pricing was going to be sky high. In Singapore, a packet would cost about S$9 (RM22) or so.

"The shops themselves are very similar to the Singapore branches and the pricing is roughly about the same as the Singapore ones too, if you ask me. As for the taste they're about the same which is a good thing though I have to admit that the Singapore Garrett popcorns do look a bit bigger than the Malaysian ones," said Nazrin Zain, a Garrett fan.

According to one staff member at the KLCC outlet, the most popular flavour is Macadamia CaramelCrisp. I've tried it and it is indeed yummy. At RM19 a pop, this is no cheap indulgence but there are loads of macadamia in it. In line with the Chinese New Year festive season, Garrett is introducing the Spicy CheeseCorn flavour and the Year of the Dragon tin, which are only available for a limited time. The Spicy CheeseCorn flavour is also available in other countries.

"Some of my friends call me crazy for queuing up and paying big bucks for popcorn. 'It's only popcorn!' they would tell me but Garrett is not just any popcorn. The kernels are fully popped so you do not get them stuck in-between your teeth.

Available for the festive season only, the Spicy CheeseCorn flavour is worth trying.

"For the caramel flavour ones, each popcorn is coated fully in rich caramel compared to regular popcorn which is basically just sugar syrup almost. My personal favourite is the Macadamia CaramelCrisp... about 90 per cent of the popcorn has macadamia. Yes, it may be costly but I think the price is justifiable," said Sally Ng, a regular customer and obviously a fan.

The Garrett Popcorn outlet in 1 Utama is located within Candylicious, a large candy shop with a wide selection of sweets and chocolates from all over the world. During weekends and public holidays, the queue gets very long.

And guess what, the PJ folks are also fans of the Macadamia CaramelCrisp flavour. I casually asked the guy behind the counter if the Spicy CheeseCorn flavour had taken off yet since we Malaysians are fans of anything spicy but he said it was not a popular choice yet. Or it could be that people like to stick to favourites and are not adventurous enough to try out the Spicy CheeseCorn flavour just yet.

In New York, a Tanjung Malim man earns rave reviews for redefining Asian food

Posted: 04 Jan 2012 12:59 AM PST

The sign outside Wong's.

NEW YORK, Jan 4 — In an era where restaurants avoid the fusion moniker, a Chinese Malaysian chef from Tanjung Malim, Perak, who has made a name for himself in the cut-throat world of gastronomy is earning renewed acclaim for what the New York Times this week referred to as "Asian Fusion, the Latest Chapter."

In a review of Simpson Wong's latest restaurant — known simply as Wong — the newspaper highlighted specialities like his duck-fat ice cream in a dessert called duck a la plum.

Simpson Wong: Not fusion; it's "Asian locavore".

Referring to people who try the dessert, the review points to how "first they stop talking. Then they stop moving. Their eyes shut, and just when you're wondering how long this will last, they pop open again, bright with the pleasure of discovery."

Wong does not use the term fusion to describe its fare.

It is known as "Asian locavore."

Some of the specialities at Wong include duck tongues rolled into small meatballs, as well as a Bolognese made with sea cucumbers, pork and shiitake mushrooms. The sauce is served with rice noodles.

According to Simpson Wong's website he used to own two restaurants, Jefferson and Café Asean in Greenwich Village, New York City. But, when he suffered a heart attack at the age of 40, he was forced to close one of these establishments after learning that he has a hereditary problem with metabolising cholesterol.

Because of the rich and fatty foods involved in his line work, he has to make drastic changes in his lifestyle through a routine of diet and exercise. He began changing the way he cooks by incorporating heart healthy ingredients and cooking techniques. At the latest, his cholesterol level plummeted to 150 from a high of 300.

When he was a child, Simpson Wong was often intrigued by his parents' cooking skills. He still recalls his mother's braised duck with young ginger and black bean sauce and his father's delicious silky egg custard.

The dining room at Wong.

With such an early exposure to good food, it is not surprising that Wong ended up as a chief chef in one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world — New York.

"I learnt a lot by watching my parents cook. Through the years of exposure, I developed an intuition and palate as to how a dish should come off. Nowadays, I constantly experiment with new methods of cooking," says Wong, who owns Café Asean and Jefferson (Currently Close) in New York.

Wong, who hails from Tanjung Malim, Perak, started working as a bank teller after completing his Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia in 1981. Six years later, he decided to call it quits.

He moved to New York in 1988. While he was discovering New York, he also tried living in London in 1990 and worked in a translation firm as well as a part-time waiter in a restaurant, but gave up after a year.

"Although London is a great city, the weather is a major drawback. It rains far too often and is overcast and gloomy. It is also very costly and the mass transit is not very convenient. The tube stops running at 11pm. Most importantly, for a foreigner, it is harder to get a job in London than in New York," he says on his website.

"I chose to settle in New York because America is a land of opportunity. Anyone who is willing to work hard for his dreams has a realistic chance of success. Moreover, the city is the most ethnically diverse and progressive in the United States and perhaps in the world," says Wong.

Not forgetting the bar where your favourite cocktails are served.

Wong's fame has spanned the better part of the last decade.

Around 2004, his Jefferson restaurant's dining room was featured on Sex and the City.

He closed the restaurant after his heart attack.

According to the New York Times' review of Wong, he travelled back to Malaysia to be with his mother for inspiration before embarking on his latest venture.

Together with his 80-year-old mother, Wong embarked on eating tours around Asia, the newspaper reported, and what they found served as inspiration for his latest restaurant.

"At 48, Mr. Wong has closed a popular and acclaimed restaurant. He knows what a heart attack feels like. For future reference, if those things happen to you, there are worse ways to react than to invent duck tongue meatballs," the newspaper wrote of the Malaysian, who is a permanent resident in the United States.

LONDON, Jan 5 — Wales will host Costa Rica next month in a memorial match for late national manager Gary Speed, who was found dead at his home on November 27 in an apparent suicide.

Speed, 42, made his international debut for Wales against Costa Rica in May 1990 and won 85 caps in all. He became Wales manager in December 2010.

"This will be an opportunity to celebrate the life and achievements of a great servant to Welsh football both as a player and as a manager," the Football Association of Wales said in a statement.

Man United slump to second straight loss

LONDON, Jan 5 — Champions Manchester United suffered a second straight English Premier League defeat yesterday, losing 3-0 to Newcastle United to leave Manchester City three points clear at the top of the table.

Demba Ba opened the scoring in the first half with his 15th league goal of the season before Yohan Cabaye made it 2-0 in the 47th from a free-kick. A Phil Jones own goal late on made sure Newcastle stayed seventh and a point behind Liverpool.

United's third defeat in 20 matches so far meant they stayed second on 45 points, only three ahead of third-placed Tottenham Hotspur who have a game in hand.

"It's not the time to panic. We've got the experience to cope with it," said United manager Alex Ferguson, whose team lost 3-2 to Blackburn on New Year's Eve.

Bolton Wanderers shocked Everton 2-1 away from home after Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard had given his side the lead with a freak kick from his own area.

Bolton, who moved move off the bottom to 18th place, equalised through David Ngog four minutes later with Chelsea transfer target and England defender Gary Cahill scoring the winner 12 minutes from time.

Howard's booming wind-assisted clearance bounced over opposite number Adam Bogdan and was only the fourth goal scored by a goalkeeper since the Premier League was formed in 1992-93.

Everton stayed 11th on 24 points with a game in hand on all teams bar Tottenham, while Bolton leapt above Blackburn Rovers and Wigan Athletic on 16 points, only one behind Queens Park Rangers and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Senegal striker Ba, a revelation for Newcastle this season who will be sorely missed during the January 21-February 12 African Nations Cup, wasted a great chance to put his side in the lead early in the first half but made amends with the brilliantly taken opener.

After a long kick from goalkeeper Tim Krul that was flicked on by Shola Ameobi, Ba flicked the ball right-footed over Rio Ferdinand and United keeper Anders Lindegaard into the far corner of the net on 33 minutes.

Better was to follow, when two minutes into the second half Cabaye unleashed an unstoppable free kick. Then, with United laying siege to Newcastle's goal, defender Danny Simpson stopped a Wayne Rooney shot on the line to keep the two-goal advantage.

Former United player Simpson did exactly the same from a Javier Hernandez shot when the two sides met in the league in November to prevent a 2-1 home win.

United's miserable night was capped with added time approaching when Jones took his eye off the ball following another huge kick by Krul and headed it onto his leg to wrong-foot Lindegaard.

"We've had such a great season so far without actually turning over one of the top teams. Today we had our best team out and it showed," Newcastle manager Alan Pardew told Sky Sports.

Ferguson conceded matter-of-factly that rivals City have the advantage in the Premier League title race.

"They won theirs last night and we lost ours, advantage to them of course." — Reuters

Malaysia gets the blue ribbon for cooking

Posted: 03 Jan 2012 05:17 PM PST

Ming Ho, general manager of Sunway Le Cordon Bleu... aiming to raise the bar in culinary arts studies. — Picture by Jack Ooi

PETALING JAYA, Jan 4 — While we are known as a nation of food lovers, Malaysia is not the first country you think of when it comes to an education in the culinary arts. For that, the storied Le Cordon Bleu still holds a special place in a quite crowded field of Swiss and other European institutions.

So when the partnership between Sunway University College and Le Cordon Bleu was announced last year, foodies (and those who want a career in the kitchen, of course) were buzzing with excitement.

Le Cordon Bleu, which means "The Blue Ribbon" in French, is a name synonymous with fine food and education. It is the world's largest hospitality education institution with 35 schools in five continents and this month Malaysia joins that distinguished rank. Most of the graduates have become celebrity chefs, opened Michelin-star restaurants and are internationally recognised.

Le Cordon Bleu Malaysia is the second Le Cordon Bleu institute established in South-East Asia after Thailand. It is a standalone institute, partnering with Sunway Education Group and Le Cordon Bleu Paris. I spoke to Ming Ho, general manager of Sunway Le Cordon Bleu, Institute of Culinary Arts on this important milestone in culinary arts education in Malaysia. So, why was Malaysia chosen by Le Cordon Bleu?

Practical sessions in the kitchen are an integral part of the course.

Ho says that Malaysia is the best hub in terms of getting students from all over South-East Asia because of the low cost of living. Another important factor to consider is also that it caters to a large Indonesian and local market as the institute does not feature any recipes with pork.

Dr Andre Contreau, president and CEO of Le Cordon Bleu International saw the opportunity of the infrastructure in Malaysia and felt that this strategic location is suitable to get a good mix of students from South-East Asia.

What Le Cordon Bleu Malaysia offers is a nine-month programme with three months of internship for both local and international students. In the programme, there are three terms, each spanning three months. At the end of each term, a certificate is given progressively until the end of the course.

There are two kinds of programmes offered, culinary arts in cuisine and culinary arts in pastry. Once the student graduates with the certification, he or she is internationally recognised in the culinary world and the certificate is the same as the one obtained in Le Cordon Bleu France as well as every Le Cordon Bleu institute in the world.

"We hope to raise the bar of culinary arts studies because the programme is very intensive. It is short, just nine months but the hours put in to learn when the chef is demonstrating the recipes and hands-on practical sessions totals to 540 hours. Any culinary school will not give you that kind of practical hours.

"We only have 16 stations maximum in the practice kitchen so they (the students) have their own stove, their own cutlery and so on. Chefs will come and guide them as they have observed from the demonstration classes," said Ho.

She explains that the challenges Le Cordon Bleu may face here is the discipline of young, aspiring chefs. Punctuality and attendance is taken very seriously in Le Cordon Bleu and this can be seen even in the institute in Bangkok.

The prestigious Le Cordon Bleu certificate.

If the student is late for 15 minutes six times in a row he is considered three days' absent. This can result in expulsion. The student can still continue the rest of the term but at the end of the term, he will not get a certificate.

Ho goes on to say that a lot of young people nowadays want a shortcut. When they graduate, they want to have a high position but they do not know that going through the programme is hard work.

"If you want to be a chef you have to succumb to the discipline and you have to be serious in your career path. If you want to be a good chef you will take heat from all the other professionals who have already been long in the industry and must really know the game to teach you the right way," she added.

Le Cordon Bleu is from France, so people presume that the school only teaches French cuisine and nothing else. But according to Ho, it is delivering French techniques through French recipes in a way that students can create and innovate every recipe to their liking, style and culture.

She gave an example of when a Le Cordon Bleu chef was teaching how to make fish mousse. The chef taught the French recipe but in the delivery of the programme, he told the students to put in their style and culture such as spices like curry powder to make it taste local.

Officially classes for the year-long programme start this month but the structure and syllabus are streamlined with the rest of the Le Cordon Bleu institutes internationally.  For more details, e-mail Sunway Le Cordon Bleu Institute of Culinary Arts at lecordonbleu@sunway.edu.my.

Jamie Oliver joins Paula Deen and Guy Fieri for ‘unhealthiest cookbooks’ of 2011

Jamie Oliver joins Paula Deen and Guy Fieri for 'unhealthiest cookbooks' of 2011

NEW YORK, Jan 3 — Healthy eating crusader Jamie Oliver has been lambasted by a US physicians' group for writing what they called one of the worst cookbooks of 2011.

Jamie Oliver's Meals in Minutes, released last fall, was criticised namely for its Meatball Sandwich recipe, which contains more fat than a Big Mac and more than double the calories, cholesterol, sodium and saturated fat, said the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine.

The recipe calls for ground beef, pancetta, Jarlsberg cheese and ciabatta loaves.

It's a harsh blow for the British chef and TV personality, who has been at the forefront of several aggressive campaigns and public policy movements pushing families to eat healthier meals, including series like Jamie's School Dinners in the UK and Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution in the US.

Oliver's offending meatball sandwich recipe has landed him in the company of known butter and fat-bomb recipe writers like Southern food matriarch Paula Deen, who makes no apologies for deep frying cheesecake, and meat-loving chef Guy Fieri.

A serving of Hot Buffalo Wings (three wings) from Paula Deen's Southern Cooking Bible contains 910 calories and 85gm of fat, while Guy Fieri Food's Jambalaya Sandwich with bacon, Andouille and smoked sausages could help raise the risk of colon cancer, the group says.

Other nutritional offenders include The Neelys' Celebration Cookbook for their saturated fat-laden Bourbon Bread Pudding and The Cook's Illustrated Cookbook for focusing on meat-based recipes. — AFP-Relaxnews

Real storm back to take charge in Cup

Posted: 03 Jan 2012 03:33 PM PST

MADRID, Jan 4 — Holders Real Madrid scored three times in 10 minutes at the Bernabeu yesterday in a dramatic comeback to beat Malaga 3-2 in their King's Cup last 16 first leg.

Real coach Jose Mourinho threw caution to the wind with a triple substitution at halftime when his side were trailing 2-0. Sami Khedira, Gonzalo Higuain and Karim Benzema responded by netting between the 68th and 78th minutes.

Up to that point, the underdogs had held sway in the Cup with three surprise results earlier in the evening.

Third tier Mirandes, who knocked out Villarreal in the previous round, took a 2-0 lead over Racing Santander and another Segunda B side, Albacete, vanquishers of Atletico Madrid, drew 0-0 with Athletic Bilbao.

Second division Alcorcon, who eliminated Real Zaragoza, grabbed a 2-1 win at home to high-flying Levante, who lie fourth in La Liga.

Qatari-owned Malaga had been thrashed 4-0 and 7-0 in their last two meetings with Real, but took the lead through Sergio Sanchez and Martin Demichelis, both scoring with headers from Santi Cazorla corners.

Mourinho threw on Khedira, Benzema and Mesut Ozil for the second half to try and shake his side out of their lethargy and the former barged his way through to start the fightback.

Higuain pounced on a wayward backpass to level two minutes later and Benzema slotted the third after a wonderful backheel from Higuain as Malaga desperately tried to keep the floodgates closed.

Pablo Infante was the hero for Mirandes, scoring after 32 minutes and laying on the second for Mikel Martins just after the restart, leaving La Liga's lowest scoring team Racing with a tough task in the second leg.

Alcorcon, who famously dumped city neighbours Real out of the Cup while in the Segunda B two years ago, surprised Levante with Borja Perez and Nagore twice giving them the lead.

Last season's losing finalists Barcelona are at home to Osasuna today. The second legs will be played next week. — Reuters

City move three points clear with Liverpool victory

LONDON, Jan 4 —  Premier League leaders Manchester City put their recent run of poor form behind them to beat Liverpool 3-0 yesterday, while Tottenham Hotspur maintained their title push with a 1-0 win at home to West Bromwich Albion.

Despite having Gareth Barry sent off in the 73rd minute, first-half goals from Sergio Aguero, Yaya Toure and a second-half penalty from James Milner helped City, who had lost to Sunderland only two days ago, to a comprehensive victory.

They move to 48 points from 20 games, three clear of rivals Manchester United who have played one match fewer and six clear of Tottenham who had Jermain Defoe's clinical finish to thank for their victory at White Hart Lane.

City, who had gone two games without a win, were gifted the lead after only 11 minutes when Liverpool keeper Pepe Reina let a snap shot from Aguero dip under his body and Toure added a second with a header before the break.

Liverpool, who have struggled for goals this season, were without striker Luis Suarez as he was beginning his eight-game suspension for racially abusing Manchester United defender Patrice Evra during a Premier League match in October.

The visitors were once again guilty of squandering opportunities with Stewart Downing failing to convert a one-on-one with City keeper Joe Hart and Dirk Kuyt unable to volley past City defender Vincent Kompany who made a good block to deny the Dutchman.

Chances were hard to come by in the second half, but Liverpool looked to have been given a route back into the match when City midfielder Barry picked up a second booking for a foul on the visitors' defender Daniel Agger.

FANTASTIC TEAM

Within two minutes, however, City had put the game beyond doubt when Toure powered into the Liverpool area and was brought down by Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel. Milner stepped up to hit the resultant penalty into the top corner.

"It was a difficult game and Liverpool are a fantastic team," City manager Roberto Mancini told Sky Sports.

"Liverpool played four days ago and we played two days ago. This is terrible for us. I think the first half we played well but maybe in the second half for 20 minutes we are tired."

Tottenham scored the only goal of the game with a typical finish from Defoe who was marked by three players when he received a cross from Gareth Bale, but managed to turn and place the ball past West Brom keeper Ben Foster.

Spurs came into the game without the injured Scott Parker and Aaron Lennon and were soon struggling with injuries again.

Midfielder Sandro went off in first half, stand-in skipper William Gallas limped off in 68th minute and substitute Jake Livermore was then forced off with a cut mouth and replaced by Niko Kranjcar.

Sunderland maintained their good form since the arrival of new manager Martin O'Neill with a 4-1 win over struggling Wigan Athletic.

O'Neill's side moved into the top half of the Premier League with goals from Craig Gardner, James McClean, Stephane Sessegnon and David Vaughan. Hugo Rodallega scored for Wigan. — Reuters

Illegal Asian betting rings a threat to London Olympics

LONDON, Jan 3 – Fixing now poses the biggest threat to the integrity of the Olympics, the British minister for the 2012 London Games told The Sunday Times newspaper, citing illegal Asian betting rings.

Olympics minister Hugh Robertson said fixing had overtaken drugs cheats in terms of the threat posed to the reputation of the Games.

"You cannot underestimate the threat this poses because the moment that spectators start to feel that what they are seeing in front of them is not a true contest, that is when spectators stop turning up and the whole thing falls to pieces," he told the weekly broadsheet.

He said he thought betting authorities in Western countries were "well set up" to spot illegal activity but criticised the lack of regulation in Asia, both on the Indian sub-continent and in the Far East.

Robertson cited the recent cricket corruption scandal, in which three Pakistan players were jailed in Britain for their part in spot-fixing, pre-arranged elements in a match which betting rings can make money on.

"The issue is not of betting syndicates in this part of the world," the minister said.

"It is in illegal betting syndicates on the Indian sub-continent and elsewhere, where huge sums of money change hands."

He said spot-betting was the biggest threat, with syndicates wagering huge sums on more easily fixed elements within matches, rather than on the outcome of whole contests.

"At some stage over the next two or three years, we will have some other sort of betting scandal in some sport. I just hope it is not at the Olympics," Robertson said.

For the first time in the history of the Games, a dedicated intelligence unit will be created to crack down on attempts to bribe athletes and irregular betting patterns.

The unit will be headed up by Britain's Scotland Yard police headquarters and work with the Serious Organised Crime Agency and Interpol to track suspicious gambling activity, The Sunday Times said.

The government is also set to fast-track through laws to allow Britain's gambling commission to share intelligence with Olympic officials and foreign investigation agencies, it added. – AFP

New anti-wrinkle technology ‘tricks’ cells into regeneration

Posted: 02 Jan 2012 11:32 PM PST

Ad for upcoming Forever Youth Liberator Line.

NEW YORK, Jan 3 - The buzz around 2012's must-have anti-wrinkle cream has begun, with a product reportedly set for release by French cosmetics company L'Oréal generating interest in the anti-aging industry.

A report published January 2 by The Daily Mail claims a new line of anti-wrinkle creams which "trick" skin cells into regenerating themselves is expected for release this year.

According to the publication, L'Oréal will use a special type of technology registered as Glycanactif for a product line in which artificial chemicals can mimic natural chemical behaviour, penetrating the skin's surface and stimulating cell regeneration.

"There is still much more to cell signalling and the ageing process, but all the cosmetics we had before were acting on the surface," explained L'Oréal's research director Bruno Bernard.

"Now we are able to create a rejuvenating effect on the deeper levels of the skin."

Meanwhile, Richard Gallo, a professor of dermatology at the University of California in San Diego, described the results of the study into cell regeneration technology as "surprisingly good."

Gallo told The Sunday Times the technology could have a huge impact on releases from across the beauty industry, although urged a cautious approach.

"There are a number of companies looking into this area. The optimistic side of me says it does have the potential... but the pessimist in me says it might be just another piece of hype," he warned.

One product developed using L'Oréal's glycobiology technology to have already made the headlines is Yves Saint Laurent's Forever Youth Liberator.

Following its January launch in Europe and Japan with a US unveiling in March, the Forever Youth Liberator line has benefited from parent company L'Oréal's research into glycans. The new line containing the glycan complex is aimed at women over 30 and comprises a serum, cleansing mousse, lotion, cream, rich cream, eye cream and SPF 15 cream and lotion.

Glycanactif technology looks set to be L'Oréal's latest anti-aging buzz phrase, following from the 2010 launch of its Youth Code Day Cream, which had been ten years in development and was the brand's first mass market product based on genomic trials. — AFP-Relaxnews

UK artist, St Trinian’s creator Searle dies aged 91

LONDON, Jan 3 – British cartoonist Ronald Searle, best known for his spiky drawings of the tearaway pupils of the fictional girls school St Trinian's, has died in southern France aged 91, his daughter said on Tuesday.

Searle, whose anarchic St Trinian's characters spawned a series of movie adaptations, died on Dec. 30 at a hospital near his home in Draguignan, in France's south-eastern Var region.

"(He) passed away peacefully in his sleep, with his children and grandson by his side," Kate Searle said.

His spindly schoolgirl creations, which first appeared in 1941, hit the big screen in 1954 as "The Belles of St Trinian's", with Alastair Sim starring in drag as headmistress Millicent Fritton.

The film franchise was revived in 2007, with Rupert Everett taking over the headmistress role, with a follow-up, "St Trinian's 2: The Legend of Fritton's Gold", appearing in 2009.

Searle was also known for his comic illustrations in a series of 1950s satires on British private school education, written by author Geoffrey Willans, including "Down with Skool" and "How to be Topp".

The books featured the thoughts of schoolboy Nigel Molesworth, and his advice on how to survive the trials of term-time at the crumbling St. Custard's, ruled over by terrifying headmaster Grimes, head boy Grabber and the school dog.

Searle's cartoons also appeared in magazines and newspapers, including Britain's Punch and The New Yorker.

His work was recognised internationally, and he won a number of awards from America's National Cartoonists Society. In France, where he lived since 1961, he was awarded the country's prestigious Legion d'Honneur.

Searle was born in Cambridge in 1920 and attended the Cambridge School of Art.

Serving with Britain's Royal Engineers in World War Two, Searle was captured in Singapore by the Japanese and spent three and a half years as a prisoner of war in Changi and working on the Thai-Burma railway.

During captivity he secretly made sketches of the hardship of camp life, hiding the drawings under the mattresses of prisoners suffering from cholera.

He published the drawings after his liberation, with many of the pictures now kept at the Imperial War Museum in London. – Reuters

NEW YORK, Jan 3 – Chef, restaurateur and television personality Lidia Matticchio Bastianich built a career by conveying authentic, regional Italian food to American audiences.

Her eighth book, "Lidia's Italy in America," gathers 175 recipes from the dishes served in the many Italian neighbourhoods across the United States, from the deep-dish pizza of Chicago to the Muffuletta sandwich of New Orleans.

Bastianich, who lives in Long Island, New York, spoke about Italian-American cooking and how through their cuisine Italian-Americans proudly honour their homeland, even as they create something new.

Q: Why did you write this book?

A: "In the 20 years that I have been preparing regional Italian food I noticed that Italian-American food was thriving all over America. I began to understand these Italian-Americans still felt very Italian. I thought, 'this is a vibrant story. It's part of the way America evolved'."

Q: How much of the Italian-American food in your book is actually Italian? How much American?

A: "You might find maybe five or 10 per cent of this Italian-American food being cooked in Italy. So you could say it is not Italian and it is not. Italian-American is an adaptation of the Italian immigrants. It's more a part of Americana."

Q: What's the biggest difference between Italian cuisine and Italian-American cuisine?

A: "The excessive use of meats. Take the Sunday sauce. In Italy they made it with a piece of pork, maybe shoulder or skin, so the tomato sauce had a taste of meat. It was delicious and everybody got a little bit of meat in the second course. Here it comes with meatballs, braciole (rolled beef) and more. Why? Because finally these poor people had meat on the table and they couldn't get enough of it, I guess. "

Q: How do you explain the universal appeal of Italian food?

A: "It's not only the food. Everybody loves the Italian style: the music, the art. I think it has to do with our positioning in the middle of the Mediterranean: great water, sun, temperature and a diversified topography. Enjoying life, food, family, beauty, all that permeates through and I think that's what Americans love."

Asparagus Fritters – Fritelle d'Asparagi

Makes 10 to 12 fritters

2 bunches medium asparagus spears, peeled at the base (about 22 spears)

5 large eggs

1/2 cup grated Grana Padano or Parmigiano-Reggiano

1/2 small onion, finely chopped

1/4 cup fine dry bread crumbs

2 tablespoons all- purpose fl our

1/2 teaspoon kosher salt, plus more for seasoning

Vegetable oil, for frying

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the asparagus spears and cook until tender but not mushy, about 8 minutes. Drain and rinse under cold water to cool. Drain and dry the spears and cut into 1/2-inch pieces.

Whisk together the eggs, grated cheese, onion, bread crumbs, flour and salt in a large bowl. Stir in the asparagus pieces.

Heat 1/2 inch vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. (The oil is ready when a drop of batter sizzles on contact.)

Drop 1/4-cup rounds of the batter into the hot oil, flattening if necessary, to make flat cakes. Cook until golden on the underside, about 2 minutes, then flip, and fry until the fritters are cooked through, about 2 minutes more. Drain the fritters on paper towels, and season with salt. – Reuters

Oh dear, De Gea

Posted: 02 Jan 2012 04:01 PM PST

JAN 3 — Well, that was a strange turn of events.

Manchester United losing at home to Blackburn — who had started the day rock bottom of the table — and Chelsea losing at home against Aston Villa — who had started the day with just one victory in their seven previous fixtures — was not the way we expected 2011 to end.

And neither was a defeat for Premier League top dogs Manchester City at lowly Sunderland the first result we were anticipating in 2012.

Something in the air, or just a random set of coincidences? I'd plump for the latter and assert that there was no particular reason for three shocks at the same time — they just happened to happen.

(I know a lot of you will be shouting "Fix!" in the conviction that the whole thing was orchestrated by a bunch of dodgy bookmakers, but I believe there's too much money in the Premier League for match-fixing to be prevalent. But let's not get into all that now...)

Of the three results, United's capitulation to Blackburn was the most shocking.

Results like the defeat suffered by Chelsea against Villa are inevitable during the transitional phase the Blues are currently going through. Consistency will be difficult to achieve as Andre Villas Boas continues to mould a new team and a new style of play, and we can expect the Londoners to lose a few more games against lowly-placed opposition in the next few months.

And City's loss came against a Sunderland team that has clearly been re-energised by the arrival of Martin O'Neill a month ago; they are playing with a renewed sense of conviction and purpose, and have won three of the five games since their new manager's arrival.

So although City were wasteful in front of goal and will point to the fact that Ji Dong Won's goal should have been ruled out for offside, you could say that they were simply playing the wrong team at the wrong time.

United's Old Trafford defeat against Blackburn, however, was truly unexpected, and leaves young Spanish goalkeeper David De Gea in a very precarious position.

Having surrendered a two-goal advantage, United fought back to 2-2 thanks to another pair of goals from in-form Dimitar Berbatov and looked certain to claim at least one point. But then De Gea flapped dreadfully at a corner to allow Grant Hanley to nod home the winner for Rovers, handing Sir Alex Ferguson an unwanted birthday present.

Ferguson now has to decide whether to stick with De Gea, who has never looked fully comfortable since his summer arrival from Atletico Madrid. The best goalkeepers aren't the ones who make the most spectacular saves; they are the ones who make the fewest mistakes, and De Gea is highly questionable in that regard. It might be time to give Anders Lindegaard an extended run in the team.

Chelsea have already bounced back from their loss thanks to a late winner from the irrepressible Frank Lampard at Wolves, and it will be interesting to see whether City and United can make an equally quick recovery in their challenging fixtures in the next couple of days.

First up, City host Liverpool tonight and it could be a cracker. Similar to Chelsea, the rebuilding process currently under way at Liverpool has led to an inevitable inconsistency, but Kenny Dalglish's side are certainly showing plenty of potential and have been considerably strengthened by Steven Gerrard's return from injury.

One player in particular will be delighted to see Gerrard back in action: striker Andy Carroll was on the receiving end of a series of magnificent crosses from Gerrard in the latter stages of the Reds' 3-1 victory over Newcastle last week, and will surely believe that his luck in front of goal is due to change if Gerrard can continue to provide such sumptuous service.

There's no certainty that Carroll will start at the Etihad Stadium because Luis Suarez is available after a one-match ban, and it will be fascinating to see which team Dalglish picks. Gerrard to start? Carroll and Suarez together in attack or just one of them? Craig Bellamy to play against his former club and the manager who discarded him? This game has a number of fascinating sub-plots and I don't think it will be easy for City.

Then, tomorrow night's meeting between Newcastle and Manchester United is another enticing fixture. United will be fired by memories of the point that Newcastle unjustly claimed at Old Trafford six weeks ago, when a shocking penalty decision against Rio Ferdinand gave Alan Pardew's side a share of the spoils.

Newcastle will be firing on all cylinders and a red-hot atmosphere at St James' Park is guaranteed, but I feel the combination of United's sense of injustice from their previous meeting and the rollicking they'll have received from Ferguson after the loss against Blackburn will propel them into pulling out a dogged away win. So long as De Gea doesn't drop another clanger.

What we dream of

Posted: 02 Jan 2012 03:48 PM PST

JAN 3 — Dare we Malaysians dream that in 2012:

• Bersih 2.0's eight demands will be implemented before Parliament is dissolved.

• the run-up to the elections will bring out the best in everyone and not the worst.

• we have free and fair elections run by an Election Commission which is empowered, independent and brooks no cheating.

• the selling of our country to foreigners for votes (as is widely believed to be happening) will be halted and punished as the highest treason.

• every single registered voter votes in the 13th general election.

• justice will be done in Sodomy II.

• our Christian friends (who are a minority in this country) will not continue to be the target of baseless attacks and humiliation by a few.

• the government will show some guts and leadership in dealing with those who spew racism and religious hatred (this is unlikely).

• some of our leaders will get treatment for schizophrenia and compulsive lying.

• many of our leaders will educate themselves to understand the following concepts:

a. conflict of interest.

b. human rights.

c. democracy.

d. good governance.

e. telling the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.

f. that it is wrong to rob from the rakyat.

g. that there is no such thing as "the government's money" — it belongs to the rakyat.

• preserving our environment will take priority over making money (note Lynas).

• justice will be done for those who have lost their lives at the hands of the authorities and those incarcerated without trial.

• the government apologises to the EO6 and compensates them for wrongfully and baselessly detaining them for 30 days.

• the government dumps the Peaceful Assembly Bill.

• Amanah comes to life and does more than give nice speeches.

• we will finally see the peaceful and just society we all crave.

Rakyat — over to you to add to the list.

For me

Dare I dream that in 2012, Sivarasa, Haris, Chin Huat and I will be able to attend the Sarawak Rainforest Music Festival?

Happy New Year to all!

Insiden UPSI: Mahasiswa buat laporan polis, dakwa polis gunakan kekasaran

Posted: 03 Jan 2012 01:04 AM PST

"Sistem kita begitu rapuh, kita perlu menjangka senario terburuk.

Little kopitiam in Little India

Posted: 02 Jan 2012 04:45 PM PST

An Le Kopitiam in Little India is a real gem.

GEORGE TOWN, Jan 3 — You'll be surprised what little gems one can unearth in the most unlikely places.

Take Little India in George Town, for example. Perched on the edge of the ethnic and lau juak (merry) little enclave is the Peace and Joy (An Le) Coffee Shop, one of those old kopitiams that are, sadly, slowly but inexorably disappearing from our cities.

This double-fronted little oasis of relative quiet is situated at the junction of China Street and Lebuh Queen. Instead of curries, tandooris and nasi kandar, you'll find stalls selling some good old Penang favourites inside.

An Le's special Chee Cheong Fun with 'sambal hey bee'. — Pictures by Helen Ong

Proprietor Ah Cheong, aided by her son Alex, moved there about 10 years ago after nearly four decades at the old kopitiam across the road. It's popular with locals and tourists who come in to escape the dust of the busy roads and the debilitating heat of the day.

Apart from drinks — they are proud of their fresh and fragrant local coffee — they also run the chee cheong fun stall, the smooth, steamed rice noodles served with the typically sweet, dark and gooey "hey ko" (prawn paste) sauce but with a difference: spicy home-made "sambal hey bee".

They've just introduced dim sum, and Ah Cheong also cooks the all-important soup for their popular chicken kuey teow t'ng.

Unfortunately Ah Kheong is no longer there to serve his wanton mee; however, he did train up his replacement Ah Bee who has now taken over and continues to serve up this old favourite.

The wanton mee stall is now run by Ah Bee.

Ah Cheong's brother Chee Wah serves his award-winning curry mee, as vouched for by the certificate which is displayed on the front of his stall: it proudly proclaims he was voted the "Best Hawker People's Choice" by Fonterra Food Services in 2009. It's tasty and spicy, although I wish I'd gone there on a weekend, as it is then that he adds something special: his own home-made curry chicken.

Former hotel chef de partie Ah Boon runs the Western food stall, serving a variety of breakfast dishes, fish 'n chips, and chicken chops.

He's also concocted a unique and apparently popular "English murtabak", basically a cheese and chicken ham sandwich which is coated with beaten egg then fried till crispy. There's also the newly-arrived Ah Guan's char kuey teow.

The stalls start operating at about 7am every day and run on till about 5pm except on weekends when they shut at 3pm, when there's mamak mee goreng available as well. They used to open right through to night time but according to Alex, there are fewer hawkers available now.

An Le Kedai Kopi is at 81/89 China Street, Penang.

Chelsea win, Arsenal lose in more late drama

Posted: 02 Jan 2012 03:25 PM PST

LONDON, Jan 3 — Chelsea and Arsenal experienced contrasting late drama in the Premier League yesterday, with an 89th minute Frank Lampard goal giving Chelsea a 2-1 win at Wolverhampton Wanderers while Bobby Zamora's last-gasp strike handed Fulham a 2-1 win over Arsenal.

The late goals followed Sunderland's last-kick winner over league leaders Manchester City on Sunday and maintained the unpredictability of the busy holiday programme, with the race for the title and top four places still wide open.

Manchester City are top on goal difference from Manchester United, with both clubs on 45 points from 19 games, followed by Tottenham Hotspur in third on 39, having played one game fewer.

Chelsea are fourth on 37 points from 20 matches, one clear of Arsenal who slipped to fifth after having Johan Djourou sent off 12 minutes from time before Zamora's goal in the third minute of stoppage time sent them crashing to defeat.

City host Liverpool, who are sixth, today, when Spurs take on mid-table West Bromwich Albion while Manchester United visit seventh-placed Newcastle United tomorrow.

In yesterday's other matches, all the away teams won, with Swansea City earning a 2-0 victory at Aston Villa, Stoke City beating Blackburn Rovers 2-1 and Norwich City winning 2-1 at fellow promoted club Queens Park Rangers, who had Joey Barton sent off after he had earlier scored the opening goal.

Fulham fightback

Arsenal slipped one place to fifth after Chelsea's earlier win but seemed set to reclaim a top-four spot having taken a 1-0 lead at Craven Cottage with the game moving towards its finale.

Laurent Koscielny put Arsenal ahead with a 21st minute header but Fulham, who lost 5-0 to Manchester United in their last home game, came back strongly in the second half.

They went close to equalising three times before Djourou was sent off for hauling back Zamora in the 78th minute, which helped tip the match even more in their favour.

Steve Sidwell, who won the FA Youth Cup at Arsenal but never made the first team, finally headed Fulham level after 85 minutes before Zamora smashed in the winner with a slightly mis-hit left-foot volley with seconds remaining.

Fulham manager Martin Jol, who enjoyed his first Premier League victory over Arsene Wenger's side in nine attempts, told Sky Sports:

"It was amazing. It's a big compliment to all the players because in the second half they were on the front foot, and to get the equaliser was a big boost.

"We played very well in the second half after they outplayed us for the first 20 or 25 minutes."

However, Jol's adversary from the Dutchman's days of managing Arsenal's arch-rivals Spurs was far from happy.

Wenger claimed Djourou should not have been sent off and that Arsenal should have had a penalty in the first half when Gervinho was tripped in the box.

"We went down to 10 men but in my opinion it was a foul for us on the second yellow for Djourou," Wenger said.

"We should have had a penalty in the first half, but it was difficult after we went down to 10 men. I also thought the referee got it wrong on the first yellow card for Djourou. He got it all wrong."

While Arsenal's three-match unbeaten league run came to an end, Chelsea ended a four-match winless streak when Lampard struck late to secure victory at Wolves.

Chelsea, who drew three straight matches before losing 3-1 at home to Aston Villa on Saturday, went ahead through Ramires after Wolves failed to clear a corner in the 54th minute.

Stephen Ward equalised in the 84th before Lampard struck the winner a minute from time.

"It's a massive win," Lampard told the BBC. "Everyone knows we are having a tough time but the determination shone through and I think we deserved it.

Away success

Swansea's victory at Villa was their first on the road since they were promoted, with goals from Nathan Dyer and Wayne Routledge, who scored his first goal in the Premier League since he first played in the top division eight years ago.

Blackburn failed to capitalise on their stunning 3-2 win at Manchester United on Saturday when they lost at home to Stoke, with Peter Crouch scoring the 100th and 101st league goals of his career.

Blackburn remain deep in trouble in 19th, with 14 points from 20 matches, one point above bottom side Bolton Wanderers and one point below Wigan Athletic, who are also in the drop zone.

QPR meanwhile started well but lost to Norwich, who came back strongly after Barton put the home side ahead with a well-taken 11th-minute goal.

Barton was then dismissed for an off-the-ball incident with Bradley Johnson after 34 minutes before Anthony Pilkington equalised for the visitors just before the break and substitute Steve Morison scored their late winner. — Reuters

Late goals give Fulham dramatic win over Arsenal

LONDON, Jan 3 — Fulham scored twice in the dying minutes to beat Arsenal 2-1 and deny them a return to the top four in the Premier League in a dramatic match at Craven Cottage yesterday.

Arsenal led from the 21st minute with a Laurent Koscielny header, but after they had Johan Djourou sent off 12 minutes from time for hauling back Bobby Zamora, Fulham struck twice to win for the first time in four matches.

Steve Sidwell, who started his career at Arsenal but never played for them, equalised for Fulham with a header after 85 minutes before Zamora smashed in a left foot volley in the third minute of added time to give Martin Jol's team all three points.

Arsenal started the day in fourth place but were knocked back to fifth by Chelsea, who won 2-1 at Wolverhampton Wanderers earlier yesterday.

Chelsea have 37 points, one clear of Arsenal on 36. The top three — Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur — were not in action and play later this week.

In the other early matches, Swansea City won 2-0 at Aston Villa, Stoke City won 2-1 at Blackburn Rovers and Norwich City won 2-1 at Queens Park Rangers. — Reuters
