Steve Jobs book jumps to top of bestseller lists

NEW YORK, Nov 4 — Walter Isaacson's biography of Apple Inc co-founder Steve Jobs leapt to the top of bestseller lists in its first week in book stores, flying off shelves to the tune of 379,000 copies, according to Nielsen's BookScan.

"Steve Jobs", which came out on October 24 from publisher Simon & Schuster, sold three times more copies than the next-bestselling book, John Grisham's "The Litigators".

In its first week alone the book became one of the year's 20 bestsellers.

It has been a year since any book has sold more copies in its first week. Both former President George W. Bush's autobiography, "Decision Points", and Jeff Kinney's "Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Ugly Truth", sold more than 400,000 copies in their first week last November.

Jobs died on October 5 of pancreatic cancer, age 56. The publication of Isaacson's book, which was written with Jobs' cooperation, was moved up from the original 2012 date.

The 571-page volume was released on Apple's iBooks online store and Amazon's Kindle the day before it hit stores. Amazon later said it expected the book to be its top seller of the year. Sony has already picked up film rights to the book. — Reuters

Muzzle knowledge, and be muzzled by fire

Posted: 03 Nov 2011 05:20 PM PDT

NOV 4 — Education and knowledge is something that is very important to me. And equally important is the process of gaining it.

The recent issue with the International Islamic University's (IIU or UIA) suspension of Prof Dr Abdul Aziz Bari is an embarrassment in my eyes.

An academic should be allowed to express his educated and intellectual views if so he wishes because it is his right and his responsibility to do so.

It is this right and responsibility of an academic that will lead to better educated students and a more civilised society.

If this right and responsibility is taken away from an academic, then the society that has done so would be a society that stifles intellectual development.

As an Islamic university (as its name suggests), should it not be more Islamic? Maybe I can assist by providing a particular quote by Prophet Muhammad:

"Whoever conceals knowledge would be muzzled on the Day of Resurrection with a muzzle of fire."

What Malaysian universities are lacking, in my humble opinion, is a proper tenure system for academics that ensures their rights and responsibilities.

By having a tenure system, academics will be assured that they will be protected no matter what they say or express, albeit they are trusted as intellectuals.

Hence, tenures are usually given to senior academics and its purpose is to guarantee their right to academic freedom and thought.

This is to allow academics to conduct research and thought as well as to express their findings with full honesty, without fearing any negative effects (i.e. job security!).

Tenures also ensure that an academic institution maintains integrity in its grading system, and this is particularly important for private institutions.

What this means is that academics cannot be pressured by the administration to give higher grades in order to attract more students or to retain existing ones.

Speaking of students, I find it an embarrassment that Malaysia has the Universities and University Colleges Act that prohibits students from participating in anything political.

One of the reasons given by the government for the implementation of this Act is that students should not waste time with politics and focus more on their education.

Let me ask you this. How can you separate a student's education, and intellectuality, from their natural desire to get involved in their own society's political situation?

Does it not show a student's intellectuality and desire for education if they feel they want to discuss, participate and contribute to the development of their own country?

Or, is the government really saying that Malaysian university students don't really have the intellectual capability to participate in politics?

If this is the case, then the government would be implying that our university education system is not up to par in training intellectually capable students.

I applaud the IIU (or UIA) students who demonstrated their feelings when their respected professor was suspended by the administration.

I abhor the decision of Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) to threaten suspension on its student, Khalid Mohd Ismath, for writing about the issue on his blog.

I applaud the news regarding a particular decision made by the Kuala Lumpur Court of Appeal on the Universities and University College Act last Monday.

The three-man panel held that section 15(5)(a), which restricts students from expressing in support of, or opposing, any political party, is unconstitutional.

I applaud the Prophet Muhammad who once said:

"He is not from my followers, he who does not respect his elders, who does not show mercy to the young and who does not give due right to a scholar."

A gun to my head

Posted: 03 Nov 2011 05:07 PM PDT

NOV 4 — I had wanted to begin this essay by drawing attention to the disturbing death threat received by constitutional law expert Prof Aziz Bari for expressing an opinion regarding a recent royal decree.

But as happens to all journalists who are slow to write, events have overtaken my thoughts.

And so I have to begin with the police ban on the Seksualiti Merdeka festival.

I am not sure if the media intends to cast the police as buffoons but when the competent authorities are quoted as justifying their ban by suggesting that "the law in the country [does] not recognise any deviationist activity that could destroy the practice of religious freedom" I feel at a complete loss.

How on god's good earth does a festival that tries to raise awareness of the legitimate rights of LGBTs to equal protection before the law become a strategy to destroy religious freedom.

Admittedly, I am a gay atheist, along with being a Johor Baru-born, Singapore-bred, social science-trained, Pakatan Rakyat-voting, occasional gym-going, bald, feral Malayalee-type of Indian.

Before I proceed any further let me say that I don't believe there is any reason to fear that my type will one day rule the world and abolish the opium of the masses. No, we (actually there aren't many in my little box) will probably remain in our marginal little corner forever.

I know this might not reassure everyone — many being addicted to their fears — but that's all I can offer.

Anyway, if the police want to ban Seksualiti Merdeka they really ought to have a better reason like the fact that they are bowing (on hands and knees) to the Perkasa-PAS Youth bandwagon.

Did I just mention that I identify politically with the Pakatan Rakyat coalition? Well I do, that is, until such time that I feel that members of the coalition really have no clue what a democracy is in its essence.

Surely they don't think that democracy is merely an opportunistic slogan to take power, and a numbers game best won by pandering to the fears and desires of the majority?

While Perkasa's stand does not surprise me in the least — it being consistent with their role in the regime's low intensity warfare — I wonder how PAS Youth squares their call for democracy and reform with their stand against fundamental liberties. That is the fundamental liberties of some members of the Malaysian community.

If PAS Youth cannot make a distinction between their personal religious views and a commitment to democratic governance, then they are little more than social fascists.

If PAS Youth cannot bear that others have pleasures that they choose not to enjoy, then they are little more than envy-ridden wannabe tyrants.

And if PAS Youth does not uphold the secular nature of state, then supporting them is tantamount to helping the hangman tighten the noose around my little liberal neck.

Yesterday, I was incensed that those aligned with the current government put a proverbial gun to Aziz Bari's head — and by doing so held us all to ransom.

Today I feel that those aligned to parties I have supported all these years have put a gun to my head.

Worse still, I feel that in wanting a game-changing politics and knowing that I could never vote for the venial Barisan Nasional, I have put a gun to my own head.

Yes, I readily admit. I am responsible for this gun (or pick-axe if you like a colourful allusion to the assassination of Leon Trotsky instead) placed between my eyes.

Will there be redemption? Will anyone in the Pakatan Rakyat speak up against the social fascists in their ranks?

Cannot someone in PAS, the DAP or PKR instruct these angry young men on what democrats stand for? What principles democrats abide by?

Is the Youth wing so enamoured of their cultural war strategy that they can't see beyond their pious noses to the prospect of change that everyone can embrace? And not just they change they want?

Can Anwar, Mat Sabu or Lim Kit Siang explain what they mean by democracy? And do they intend to persecute LGBTs when they take Putrajaya?

You may ask me why I am tainting them with the PAS Youth brush? Well it's simply because the future of the Pakatan Rakyat lies in precisely these wings. PAS Youth, PKR Youth, DAPSY… all these flapping wings.

Pakatan Rakyat: are you democrats or fascists? (BN: no need to ask you folks, I know what the answer is.)

Do your parties subscribe to democracy as a principle of governance?

Don't your parties support internationally recognised standards of human rights? Or is someone going to stand up and rehash that old chestnut about how Asian values differ from Western values and so we can persecute those we have traditionally designated as a degraded other.

There are quite a few intellectuals waiting in the wings you can wheel out to do your bidding on this score.

I wait with bated breath.

Perhaps on the Aziz Bari case the lines were clear — it was the script we have all come to know and love. It's the easy script of us and them, good guys and bad guys, Pakatan Rakyat and Barisan Nasional.

But the campaign against, and subsequent banning of, the Seksualit Merdeka festival is proof of how inadequate this script is.

Damn, really existing Malaysian politics is complicated.

By the way, I don't want to lose sight of the persecution of Aziz Bari, nor of the real threat of violence that is emerging in our politics.

But for today I want to register my deepest despair that those I had pinned my hopes for change on might not be who I think they are. And they might not be who they say they are.

I use the word "despair" very purposefully. Because despair is a poison that rips out the innards of a democracy and allows it to be hijacked by all manner of power hungry cynics and opportunists.

And despair would be a very poor end following the personal joys I felt at the conclusion of the 2008 general election.

Muslimat PAS persoal sama ada Seksualiti Merdeka diharam kerana Ambiga

Posted: 04 Nov 2011 02:39 AM PDT

Bradley storms to early lead in Shanghai

SHANGHAI, Nov 3 – American Keegan Bradley shot a seven under par 65 to open up a two-shot first round lead at the WGC Champions tournament at the Sheshan International Club today.

Sharing second place after they carded 67s were Swedish duo players Alex Noren and Freddie Jacobson and another American Bo Van Pelt.

Bradley, 25, earned his first US Tour card a year ago by winning a second tier Nationwide Tour event in South Carolina and is already ranked 30th in the world on the back of his surprise triumph in the US PGA in August.

"I feel like I have to pinch myself out here because of what's been going on" said Bradley, who outplayed world number two Lee Westwood by four shots in a round which included five birdies and an eagle at the par five 18th.

"To go out in a strong group and play like that on this course is very rewarding and means a lot to me."

Bradley got off to a fast start off the 10th tee, holing a three foot birdie putt and picking up another shot at the par five 14th.

He then soared to the top of the leaderboard with an eagle at the 18th, taking on the water in front of the green with a three iron and holing out from 20 feet.

Westwood had kept within touching distance until that point with an eagle at the 14th, where his second shot hit the flag and left him with a tap in. But he later slipped back with successive bogeys at the fifth and sixth.

While the Englishman felt that the thick, humid atmosphere in Shanghai had affected his ball flight and made judging the distance to hit shots more difficult, Bradley had no such problems.

Should the American go on to win the final World Golf Championship event of 2011 it will increase his chances of being voted The US Tour's Player of the Year at Luke Donald's expense after the world number one and this year's PGA leading moneywinner chose to stay at home in Chicago awaiting the birth of his second child.

"Maybe I made Luke nervous today," he laughed.

"I know there is a lot on the line and some awards to be won. But I just hope to keep playing well and let those fall where they fall."

Donald could also see his €1.3 million (RM5.62 million) lead in the European money list halved on Sunday should Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy come through to triumph in Shanghai.

However, the US Open champion was five shots off the first round pace after shooting a 70. – Reuters

Manchesters united in Champions League improvement

MANCHESTER, Nov 3 – The two Manchester clubs have applied everything they learnt in last month's stunning derby to getting themselves on track for the Champions League knockout stage with City continuing to attack relentlessly and United tightening up at the back.

The 6-1 mauling by City at Old Trafford showed up United's defensive frailties and Alex Ferguson's side have since strung together three successive wins with clean sheets, including yesterday's 2-0 European win over Otelul Galati.

The victory lifted them to the top of Group C and within touching distance of the last 16, while City's 3-0 win at Villarreal in Group A put them one victory away from the next round as both clubs have recovered from indifferent starts.

Scoring at least three goals a game has become run of the mill for City, who have managed that in six of their last seven matches. After a draw and defeat in their opening group games, they have brought their league form on to the European stage.

"We had 65 per cent of ball possession, we scored three goals. I think this was important for our confidence," City manager Roberto Mancini told reporters.

"I think we have improved, not just in the Champions League. It is important for us to go in the second stage, then everything can happen with us because we are a good team. We can improve a lot in the next month."

His side travel to third-placed Napoli in their next game later this month and a win would put them through. They then play at home to leaders Bayern Munich in December.

United can also wrap up qualification in their next game, when last season's runners-up host Benfica who are level on eight points.

Ferguson's side made a lacklustre start to their campaign, despite being in a more straightforward group than City on paper, drawing their first two games before labouring to two 2-0 victories over Galati.

PLUS SIGNS

They have lacked City's sparkle but in true United fashion are getting the job done, with Ferguson taking their defensive improvements as a good sign.

"I am pleased our work rate was very good, we didn't lose any goals and that is an important factor at the moment because there has been a lot of criticism of the team in terms of defending this season," he told reporters.

"These are plus signs for us. That is three games in a row without conceding a goal so that is a step forward for us."

United's vulnerability has stemmed from injuries that have meant Ferguson has been unable to field a regular back four, while also a tendency to take a rather cavalier approach to attacking when already trailing such as in the derby.

There was no such problem yesterday where centre back Rio Ferdinand, stepping in for suspended captain Nemanja Vidic, kept control of his young defensive team mates and barely let the Romanians through.

While United defender Phil Jones said "it wasn't the prettiest of games", there were other positives for his team apart from the result.

Striker Wayne Rooney took to a central midfield role as if he had played there his whole life as Ferguson, who marks 25 years in the Old Trafford hot seat this weekend, showed he can still keep thinking up new approaches.

"I played there a lot (in midfield) when I was younger," said Rooney, who was hailed by Ferguson as the team's best player on the night.

"You get a lot of the ball there and we had to defend as well at times tonight. If the manager asks me to do it, I'm happy to do it. I don't know if it's long term, that's down to the manager, so we'll see what he decides." – Reuters

When is a bet not a bet? A day at the Iran races

Posted: 02 Nov 2011 09:07 PM PDT

Spectators cheer during the summer races at the Norouzabad Equestrian centre on the outskirts of Tehran. — Reuters pic

NOWRUZABAD, Iran, Nov 3 — As Rio Collection galloped across the finishing line, Sardar hooted with joy and high-fived his friends.

He had just won 200,000 rials (RM56). Not by "betting" on the horse, he insisted — betting is illegal under Iran's Islamic law — but by "predicting" Rio Collection would win.

"I knew he would win. I predicted correctly," said the 18-year-old.

Under Islamic syariah law, gambling is generally seen as illegal and Sardar's wager, made with a friend, was actually not permitted. But thanks to certain religious rulings, many race-goers are permitted to put money on the horses legally as long as they are "predicting" through official channels.

The Quran describes gambling as "evil, unclean and Satanic" and people found guilty of illegal gambling in the Islamic Republic can be sentenced to flogging and jail.

However, three forms of gambling were permitted under Islam, said a cleric consulted on the matter by Reuters.

"All forms of gambling are haram (forbidden by Islam) except for horse racing, camel racing and archery," said Mohsen Mahmoudi, a cleric at a north Tehran mosque, adding that those manly, warrior sports were all encouraged by the Prophet Mohammad.

But technically, he added, only the archery contestants and riders of the horses or camels in the races were permitted to bet.

To make it possible for spectators to take part, the Equestrian Federation of Iran sought permission from senior clerics — known as "sources of emulation" — to whom Shi'ite Muslims turn for guidance on moral issues.

"In negotiations with some sources of emulation, we finally managed to receive permission to bet on horses under certain conditions," said Ebrahim Mohammdzadeh, an official at Tehran's horse-racing committee.

The way it works is that jockeys authorise the horse-racing committee to place bets for other people on their behalf.

Mass appeal

Privileged to "predict", jockeys go into the final stretch of a race at the Norouzabad Equestrian centre. — Reuters pic

In pre-revolutionary Iran, horse riding was considered an elite sport. Mohammad Reza Pahlavi — the last shah who was overthrown in the 1979 uprising led by Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini — was a keen horseman and aimed to expand racing.

After the revolution the idea fell out of favour and today there are only four racetracks in the country. Camel racing — popular in some Arab countries across the Gulf — is not a significant sport in Iran and archery has no great popular following.

The 2,000-capacity Nowruzabad track off a major highway to the west of Tehran is the only track easily accessible to the population of the capital. It holds races over a 10-week season each year.

Despite its limited availability, people from many walks of life crowd the "predictions" office next to the track in Nowruzabad where legal betting takes place inside a building where an electronic screen advertises: "Make a prediction, win a prize".

Inside, a dozen women, wearing obligatory headscarves, sit behind windows, taking predictions and paying out winnings. As well as a computer screen with race details, each has a basket into which they toss the takings.

Prediction tickets can be bought for as little as 10,000 rials, with no official upper limit, although large bets are rare. Odds are not given before the race and returns are calculated afterwards.

People can also place bets on horses through the federation's website, but that misses out on the spectacle.

As the horses pass the finishing line, the spectators — including dozens of women — jump up from their seats near the track and rush to the predictions office to see how much they have won and place money on the next one.

"I just paid 50,000 rials," said Erfan, 15. "I hope I can win something.

"I always buy prediction tickets from this office but my dad bets directly with others," he said. "He once won 30 million rials."

The big bets

Betting among individuals is not legal but still goes on.

Sardar, a carpenter, wearing loose black trousers and speaking with a strong local accent, said he chose not to buy prediction tickets as winnings were limited.

"People are reluctant to place big bets with the prediction office," he said. "Big bets take place unofficially and the winnings are exchanged from hand to hand."

The really big bets happen at bigger tracks, particularly at the 10,000-capacity Gonbad-e Kavoos hippodrome in northern Iran.

"Last year someone won $75,000 (US$75,000 — RM232,600) there in a bet," a race official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Cleric Mahmoudi warned of the dangers of gambling.

"The bettor makes gains easily, without working, and this causes others to lose money with consequent dissatisfaction and grief," he said, pointing out one reason Islam regards gambling as "haram".

Most of the people buying prediction tickets legally from the racetrack office did not seem concerned, however.

"I just lost 30,000 rials but I had a lot of fun," said fine arts student Tamanna, 30, showing her ticket printed with a line that says cash spent buying the ticket goes to support the horse races, rather than in the hope of winning.

Of the total money coming into the official betting office, some 70 per cent is given out as winnings, with the remaining 30 per cent going to cover the costs of racing.

"I had a great time," Tamanna said. "In a way we are donating this money to help develop the races." — Reuters

Masak nasi lemak pun kontroversi

Posted: 02 Nov 2011 04:59 PM PDT

3 NOV — Pertama kali melihat poster filem "Nasi Lemak 2.0" di pawagam, aku tertanya-tanya, siapakah dia Namawee? Kawan Cina aku pulak cuma cakap "dia ni cuba nak buat filem 1 Malaysia tapi timbulkan banyak kontroversi".

Ugutan buat Aziz Bari belum berdosa

Posted: 02 Nov 2011 04:35 PM PDT
