Stoner, the 2007 world champion who will be starting his 150th grand prix in all categories on Sunday (tomorrow), made sure of his fourth pole in six races with a quickest lap of two minutes 02.020 seconds. Italy's Marco Simoncelli, also on a Honda, was second fastest in a dry session ahead of Yamaha's reigning world champion Jorge Lorenzo of Spain. Stoner can become the first Honda rider to win three successive MotoGP races since Valentino Rossi in 2003 and few would bet against the 25-year-old after he dominated yesterday's practice in mixed conditions. "Looking at the way we went this weekend, it doesn't really matter what conditions tomorrow brings," said the Australian, knowing it could be wet on Sunday. "I am definitely going to prefer dry...but we feel ready for any conditions." "I felt we got quite lucky with pole position today, we tried a couple of things with the bike...we changed the front a little bit and on my best lap I lost the front two or three times," he added. "One of them was very small but two were more than I'd like to push." Simoncelli, who started the last race in Spain on pole but faded to finish sixth, hoped to be Stoner's main adversary in the absence of Honda's injured Spanish rider Dani Pedrosa. "Here I have a better feeling with the bike than in Barcelona," said the Italian. "I am feeling ready to fight for the podium and victory tomorrow." There was bad news for Crutchlow, the sole British rider in the championship, who looked sure to miss his home race after falling on only his second lap and fracturing his left collarbone. The current focus is on botched stairs at the site of the new national stadium in the capital Warsaw, where the European Championships kick off on June 8, 2012. The construction firm has received an ultimatum, with top officials stepping in, including Sunday league player Prime Minister Donald Tusk. After stadium delays in the Baltic port of Gdansk forced Poland to switch Thursday's friendly with France to a club ground in Warsaw, they do not want a repeat for the national arena's opener against Germany on September 6. In gloomy mood, the tabloid Fakt headlined "Could we be stripped of Euro 2012?" and the broadsheet Polska, "Is Euro 2012 beyond our ability?" Such headlines are off the mark, insists Mikolaj Piotrowski, spokesman of organising body PL.2012. "With one year to go, we feel quite safe, though of course in the near future there's a lot of work to do," he told AFP. "I must underline there is no danger to Euro 2012," he added, noting "very strong safety-buffers". Infrastructure has been spotlighted by doubters since 2007, when European football's governing body Uefa chose joint bidders Poland and Ukraine to host the 16-nation tournament ahead of favourites Italy. As the first edition behind the ex-Iron Curtain, it is a showcase. "A couple of billion eyes will be focused on us," said Piotrowski. Austria and Switzerland hosted Euro 2008, while Euro 2016 will be held in France. The communist era ended two decades ago, but 2004 European Union entrant Poland still faces challenges way beyond Western hosts, despite bucking the recession. A 2008 Uefa readiness report gave a yellow card, and the Poles have had to work to repair their image. Poland's first Euro 2012 stadium, in the western city of Poznan, opened last September. The Gdansk stadium is not being built specifically for the France game," he said. "These stadiums are being built for Euro 2102 and beyond." Martin Kallen, Uefa's Euro watchdog, told AFP jitters are part of any major event. "We are satisfied with where we are today. But we are looking every day," he added. "There are still a lot of outstanding issues. But these aren't alarm bells." He compared Euro 2004 host Portugal's preparations. "We were on a similar level, even slightly behind, where Poland is now," he noted. Euro 2012-related investments in Poland tally 80 billion zloty (RM87billion, $29 billion), largely on transport. Ninety percent is public money, almost half of it from EU coffers used to help poorer members of the 27-nation bloc. Polish holidaymakers face a summer of jams in roadworks and railway overhauls. Officials note transport needed upgrading anyway to spur the economy, given the lack of a decent highway network in the nation of 38 million. But only 45 per cent of planned highway and 40 per cent of train-track look set to be finished in 2012, according Janusz Piechocinski of the parliamentary infrastructure commission. With qualifying ongoing, organisers must wait until December 2 to see which successful team is drawn to play where in Poland and Ukraine. "We're writing a couple of hundred scenarios," said Piotrowski, noting fans could number 1-1.5 million. "Who, from where, and how they will come to Poland, by train, by car, by plane, or by ferry." Kallen said Uefa is satisfied they can be accommodated. Polish authorities have also beefed up measures against the country's estimated 5,000 hooligans. "You can get away with the vulgarity and some of the eyebrow raising numbers only if you have a large amount of heart, and they came with plenty to spare," Gad said of Stone and Parker. "At its core there is something very sweet and very genuine about this tale." The show has also done well at the box office, pulling in more than US$1.1 million (RM3.32 million) for the week ending June 5, making it the third highest grossing Broadway show after long-running favourites "Wicked" and "The Lion King". "I don't think anyone, especially myself, was prepared for just how much of an incredible response the show was going to receive," Gad said this week. "It's blown all of us away." The time is ripe for sports scholarships too Posted: 10 Jun 2011 04:44 PM PDT JUNE 11 — A few days ago, while having a round of coffee with some friends at a mamak restaurant, one of them came up with a simple yet profound suggestion. Why doesn't the government provide sports scholarships for students who are outstanding athletes? This will give young sportsmen and sportswomen an opportunity to turn professional having honed their skills with the training and specific sports education they would receive. Eventually, they'd even be able to fend for themselves while representing the country in their chosen sport. We went on to discuss the different types of sports that a government scholarship could support and even the potential candidates deserving of such assistance. For example, the country's best basketball player, aged 18 or below, could be sent to the United States to further his studies as well as undergo the best coaching that money can buy. In the event that he makes it to the NCAA (college basketball) and is subsequently picked by an NBA team, the whole nation will simply be filled with pride. And it wouldn't matter that less than half of the population (on a conservative level) really follow basketball in the first place.  In the long term, the country will have a line-up of athletes with the potential to challenge for Gold in the Asian Games and even at the Olympics. How about hockey? If we were to send the best men's and women's players, also under-18, with a student and athletic scholarship to Germany or Australia, they could end up playing in these two countries' professional hockey leagues. Yes, I am aware that the country has sent a senior national player to Germany before, but isn't such an opportunity more suited for the stars of tomorrow? Going on the same thread, my friends and I started churning out more potential types of sports and the ideal destination for a young Malaysian to go for each of these sports. For netball, naturally Australia is the place to be. For badminton, send them to China. I can hear the alarm bells ringing — why China, when we already have a comprehensive programme for badminton over here? However, is that reason enough to eliminate the need to send our starlets overseas to gain the valuable education and lessons in the particular sport? In badminton these days, Malaysia is sometimes able to stand up to the might of China. But why is it that every time a Malaysian player overcomes some player from China, the whole world of badminton calls it an "upset"? Sometimes even "major upset". So, I figure that with the chance to live the same lifestyle as these top athletes from China and having the best-of-the-best in training, our young men and women will become a force to be reckoned with too.  Our conversation naturally ended with the sport of football. I feel that the scenario here is unique because a boy in his teens is already considered too old to try and find a place in a professional club in Europe. For a legend like Lionel Messi – "Born in Argentina, Made in Barcelona" – it is truly a dream come true. But do we have such a player who is so young and talented, who moved with his family in tow for the sake of a better footballing education, like Messi did? Well, we can be proud that we do, in Titus James Palani. This young lad went the distance all alone. He moved to France and made a commitment that saw him succeed somewhat in France's professional game. But now, maybe we can look at Cardiff City to give some hope for Malaysian youths because the Welsh club has a proper set-up, with its own academy that gives boys aged seven to 18 the chance to develop their skills. Here's where I really feel that the Malaysian owners and top management of Cardiff could find a place in the hearts of the Malaysian people. Let's face it, Cardiff are not aiming to be English Premier League (EPL) champions let alone even playing in the Premiership in the next few seasons — though they did come close last year and last month. So, with that in mind, could Cardiff at least take a leap of faith in the aforementioned young Malaysian, Titus Palani, and let him have a trial at the club? I don't even believe that he has a right to be made an automatic selection. The new manager should be allowed to use his absolute discretion on the selection.  But just given the chance will do any young lad a whole lot of good. Finally, it goes without saying that the athletic or sports scholarship that my friends and I discussed must only be given to the MOST DESERVING of students, who have already proven their capability in a particular sport. Catolica and Velez poised for glory Posted: 10 Jun 2011 04:39 PM PDT JUNE 11 — If you're already suffering from withdrawal symptoms due to a lack of football following the end of the European season, fear not — help is at hand. There's still plenty more high quality football going on around the globe — you just might have to look a little harder to find it and be prepared to watch online rather than on TV (and with commentary in a language you don't understand). The place to head for the best action over the next couple of months is undoubtedly South America, where top billing goes to the latest edition of the continent's international tournament, Copa America, which takes place in Argentina next month. The hosts possess a dazzling array of attacking talent (Messi, Tevez, Di Maria, Higuain, Milito and Aguero in the same squad? Phew!) and have been installed as favourites to lift the trophy on home soil, but they're expected to face a stern challenge from perennially strong Brazil. Before then, the destination for a few pieces of club football silverware still have to be decided, with the two-legged final of the Copa Libertadores (the South American equivalent of the UEFA Champions' League) set to begin next week between Uruguayan side Penarol and Santos from Brazil, whose squad includes the latest much-hyped "wonderkid" and reputed Chelsea target Neymar. And this weekend, the destination of Chile's national championship will be decided when Universidad Catolica host their bitter local rivals Universidad de Chile in the second leg of their play-off final (and if you think "bitter" is an exaggeration, watch the game and witness the atmosphere – it will make Celtic v Rangers look tame). Now, the Chilean Primera Division may well not be the most obvious choice to float your boat (and the game kicks off at 5am on Monday morning Malaysian time, so you'll have to be a pretty dedicated fan to consider seeking it out), but do bear with me — the football is actually pretty good. Catolica hold a seemingly unassailable 2-0 lead and, if they do go on to seal the title as expected, they would be worthy champions after dominating the league during the regular season and comfortably finishing top of the table before the play-offs. The Santiago-based club also enjoyed an impressive campaign in the Copa Libertadores, reaching the quarter-finals before being ousted by Penarol, who scored five minutes from the end of the second leg to prevent the tie from going to extra time and potentially penalties. Unfortunately for Catolica, their best player won't be at the club for too much longer. Argentine striker Lucas Pratto has spent the season on loan in Santiago from Boca Juniors, and his highly impressive performances in the Copa Libertadores attracted the attention of Serie A club Genoa, who have reportedly agreed to a multi-million deal to take the 23-year-old to Italy once the current Chilean season is finished. Pratto could have a very bright future in Europe, possessing all the tools to become a top striker: fast, powerful, good in the air and with an eye for goal, he's also equipped with a strong team ethic and seemingly endless reserves of energy. He could be a name to look out for in Serie A next season. Another South American team that could take a big step towards their national title is Velez Sarsfield in Argentina, who are entering the final two games of the season with a one point lead from second-placed Lanus. Velez have looked a very strong team all season, and it was a surprise when they were knocked out of the Copa Libertadores in the semi-finals by Penarol. A number of their players have already been linked with moves to big European clubs, including reported interest from both Arsenal and Manchester United in wily winger Ricardo Alvarez. Two more Velez players who would surely prosper in Europe are classy left back Emiliano Papa and midfielder Maximiliano Moralez, who fills the traditional number 10 role just behind the strikers. At the start of his career, in 2007, Moralez was a key member of Argentina's under 20 World Cup winning side and, although his progress has been slow since then, there can be no doubting his potential. The fixture list has been kind to Velez, handing them a trip to dreadful Huracan on Sunday evening, followed by a home fixture against mid-table Racing Club in next weekend's final game of the campaign. A pair of victories would secure their second title in three years, and it would be a surprise if they falter now. So never mind the fact that Barcelona, Manchester United, AC Milan, Bayern Munich and the rest are enjoying a few weeks off; there's plenty more football to enjoy over the next couple of months, and you might also get the chance to see a star in the making. * The views expressed here are the personal opinion of the columnist. Ready for some casual Thai eats? Posted: 10 Jun 2011 07:16 PM PDT The story behind Son-in-law Eggs is a hoot. Thai noodle soup with pork balls is on the breakfast menu. KUALA LUMPUR, June 11 — A chance meeting with a friend on Sunday led me to Surisit, a Thai kopitiam in Taman Tun Dr Ismail in KL. At The Coffee Bar where we had tea and scones, she told me excitedly about this new Thai place along the same road. So there I went for lunch on the same day. Surisit had only been opened for a week then. We considered the Easy Meals of Kheng Som Pla or Geang Kheiw Wan; the first with Sour Orange Fish and Vegetables, and Namprik Gapi or Thai Shrimp Paste Sambal with Omelette and Blanched Vegetables; the second with Green Curry Chicken and Namprik Gapi. Then we got some friendly help with the ordering, and settled on the a la carte dishes like Kerabu Pucuk Paku, Tomyam Ka Moo (tomyam with braised pork hocks), and Muu Phat Sadtor (fried petai with shrimp paste and pork) instead. The order got a bit mixed up and we got Tom Ka Khai instead, which is a coconut tomyam soup with chicken. I quite liked this. The tomyam is a mellow one because of the coconut milk; its tartness tempered by it. Crispy fried pork with shrimp paste and deepfried lime leaves... great flavours here. I had no issues with coconut milk, having read an article on its health benefits earlier. I pointed out the mix-up to our friendly service person, and she came back with apologies and a bowl of Tomyam Ka Moo for us to try, on the house. This tomyam has dark chunks of pork braised with spices in it. They taste like Teochew braised pork and I loved the flavours oozing from the tender meat. It's a clear, tart tomyam, with all the requisite flavours and aromas, with lots of abalone mushrooms in it. It certainly gave an edge to the appetite. The crunchy Pucuk Paku Yam Pla (kerabu pucuk paku) hit the right sour, hot and sweet notes; it was laced with coconut cream and had the punch of cili padi. The Muu Phat Sadtor had petai fried with shrimp paste and pork. I wished there was more petai than pork in this. I would have liked it to be a little less watery too, then there would be more zest in it. I noticed the restaurant is open for breakfast from 8am, so we were there two days later again for Thai Noodle Soup and Thai Stirfried Kwayteow. It's only RM8.50 per person, with coffee or tea, and it sure beats sitting in a hot, crowded coffeeshop for breakfast. The stock for the Pork Noodle Soup tasted like it had simmered for long hours, the sweet essence of pork coming through. There were flavourful and bouncy pork balls , and shaped minced pork in it. I ate the noodles variously with chilli flakes and Thai pickled chillies and enjoyed them. A serving of the tomyam with braised pork hocks. The Thai Stirfried Kwayteow had a stirring aroma and was fried with kai lan.  Only the local coffee fell short – it could have been stronger. I brought friends there the same day for dinner – I can never tire of Thai food. We had the Tomyam with the Braised Pork Hocks again, the Kerabu Pucuk Paku, the Fish with Crispy Garlic and Sauce, Minced Pork with Thai Basil Pork, Son-in-law Eggs and Crispy Fried Pork with Shrimp Paste and Deepfried Lime Leaves and Chilli Sauce. The Crispy Fried Pork – seasoned with shrimp paste — lived up to expectations. It had a great mouthfeel, the fat part melting into the lean. The fried, crispy kaffir lime leaves imparted a wonderful fragrance and even better hot, sour and sweet chilli dip paired with this crispy pork.  It was an explosion of flavours in the mouth. Sambal petai with pork... wish there had been more petai! Later we found this versatile dip giving a discernible lift to the Fish with Crispy Garlic and Sauce. The sauce for this was one of taucheo with spring onions, garlic and chilli, much like what we use to douse our fried fish with at home. The well-fried siakap with crispy edges and fins tasted so much better with the dip from the crispy pork. The Minced Pork with Basil had a herbal flavour about it instead of the fragrant sweet basil that we like. The Son-in-law Eggs were a mild tangy diversion from the rest of the dishes. This has deepfried hard-boiled eggs finished with a tamarind sauce cooked with palm sugar and garnished lavishly with fried shallots and chilli. The story goes that if a man has made his wife unhappy, his mother-in-law will serve these deepfried eggs to him on his next visit to her home – get the message? The menu at Surisit is still a work in progress, says Sita Jayadeva (formerly from Montien in One Bangsar), who is running the restaurant with her two nephews. Malaysia keen to walk tall among Premier League giants Posted: 10 Jun 2011 07:43 AM PDT SINGAPORE, June 10 — The unique scenario of playing Premier League giants Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool within seven days in an already congested schedule is a "handful" Malaysia are happy to cope with in order to improve their national team. Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) vice-president and national team manager Subahan Kamal said taking on the extra fixtures was important as the relationship the Asian country had built with England's leading clubs allowed them access to world-class expertise. "We in Malaysia are excited," Kamal told Reuters by telephone today. "It is not only the public and fans of Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea that are excited, even the management, the head coach, even the players are all very excited to play. "I think this is the first country in the world that will play three (Premier League) giants in a week... not even Brazil have done that." These matches come in the middle of first- and second-round World Cup Asian qualifiers with Malaysia heavy favourites to advance past Taiwan to set up a clash against bitter rivals Singapore. "Three (matches) is a handful and three is more than enough. "We feel that is good for us to prepare, hopefully, for our... second round of World Cup qualifiers to meet Singapore." Kamal said negotiations were ongoing as to what monetary benefit Malaysia would receive as part of the package for hosting the three teams but said that FAM had already fixed deals to train with the English clubs in the future. "It is a good start by having this partnership or relationship. We have opened the door so they (Malaysian players) can go there (England) and it will be good for us to work with them for the long term. "Chelsea have actually agreed to let us send our (national team) players over there to be with them for maybe a month and our coaches also," Kamal said. Liverpool already had a tie-up with the Kuala Lumpur Football Association and the duo were forming a youth development programme which would start within a month, while negotiations on sending players to train at Arsenal were ongoing, Kamal said. "Playing one game here is not going to make much of a difference but we have spoken to them (Arsenal) about sending our boys there so maybe when they are there for two or three weeks. I think there will be more of an opportunity to learn a trick or two and make themselves better." Kamal said the fixtures were organised by Hong Kong-based football events management and marketing consultants ProEvents, who had selected Malaysia because of their past success at supporting English club tours. "Two years ago they brought Man United and if you remember they played one game here and were supposed to fly off to Jakarta but because of some bombing issues they had to play a rematch in the next two or three days and the turnout of the fans was amazing. "ProEvents have seen the support and response they have had in Malaysia is amazing and tremendous. "The more clubs we have come over the better as the boys can learn from them and it is quite important for us including me to keep football alive in Malaysia and by bringing these idols over it will keep football healthy and give more room for development in Malaysia." Kamal said he hoped that despite Malaysia's love for the Premier League, more local fans would choose to wear the black and gold shirts of their country rather than those of Liverpool and Arsenal. The task force, which is set to meet for the first time next week, will include Interior Ministry politicians, finance police and administrators from various sporting governing bodies. "We have analysed what has taken place in the last few days in football betting and we have tried to work out ways of preventing it occurring again," Maroni told reporters today. "We have therefore decided to create an investigative unit with the purpose of collecting information and assessing any signs of foul play emanating from bookmakers and others," said Maroni who suggested a similar body be formed at European level. He was speaking after a meeting with Giancarlo Abete, president of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), and Gianni Petrucci, Italian Olympic Committee (CONI) president. "We can't rule out the hand of organised crime behind the illegal activities. I believe this to be an appropriate reaction by the world of sport and government to what has taken place." Last week, Cremona's flying squad headed a nationwide police swoop that resulted in the arrest of 16 people, including former Italy and Lazio striker Giuseppe Signori, accused of belonging to a betting ring after a six-month probe termed "last bet". Another 28, including Atalanta captain Cristiano Doni, were under investigation with allegations centring on 18 games from Serie B and Italy's lower divisions. Doni has denied any wrongdoing. Abete, who launched a sporting judicial inquiry into betting allegations involving Atalanta and Siena, who have just been promoted to Serie A, welcomed the minister's intervention. "It is an immediate response to a worldwide phenomenon," he said. "From the recent dark days, a new institutional element could emerge as a result." Petrucci also praised the government initiative. "It's a difficult time for sport. We can't deny it," he said. "Betting goes beyond sport but today knowing that the Ministry of the Interior is with us gives some relief. We feel responsible and will offer all the help we can." The latest allegations of corruption in Italian football follow the Calciopoli scandal of 2006 which revolved around securing favourable referees rather than betting. Juventus were demoted and stripped of their 2005 and 2006 titles by the sporting courts. Mitchell, now in his mid-60s, was given a press pass to the Fab Four's first US concert at the Washington Coliseum in 1964, just two days after their breakthrough television appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show. He was back later that year to cover their concert in Baltimore, by which time their fame had grown considerably. "I heard the music and I had to be there," said Mitchell, surrounded by a selection of the black-and-white images which had a spontaneity that many later photographs lacked. He is selling the collection through Christie's auctioneers in New York on July 20, and is exhibiting them in London first to raise awareness among potential bidders. "Things were much different back then," he told Reuters on Friday. "There was no big security presence, the press wasn't corralled and I was free to sort of embrace my own ambition." Several of the pictures, valued at between around US$1,000 (RM3,000) to US$6,000 each, are taken from unusual vantage points and focus on particular details. The photograph chosen by Christie's to illustrate the collection shows the four Beatles from behind looking into the bright lights that would follow them wherever they went after the outbreak of "Beatlemania" in 1964. Another was taken from the side of a table behind which the four musicians sat for a press conference, while others focus solely on Ringo Starr's hands or Paul McCartney's feet on a stage littered with sweets thrown by screaming fans. "Squeezed" by housing crisis Mitchell, who was 18 when he took the photographs, said that by the 1970s he knew he had been privileged to be a part of rock and roll history. And when he was caught out by the recent US housing crisis he decided it was time to dust off his archive and sell them. The collection is estimated to be worth around US$100,000. "You cannot forget 8,000 screaming girls," he said of his earliest memories of the Beatles. "It was like the birth of my generation." He said that he tried to do what other photographers at the events were not doing, explaining images' personal style. Cathy Elkies, head of Iconic Sales at Christie's in the United States, said she knew she was on to "something extraordinary" the moment she saw the images via email. "There's a lot of Beatles images out there, no question," she said. "(But) they are amazing, highly intimate, high-access kinds of images ... To find a treasure trove of art — you just don't find that anymore." She said the surviving two Beatles and the families of John Lennon and George Harrison may well come to see the pictures before they go on sale. Coyote and the Road Runner will all return to theaters in three original Looney Tunes cartoon shorts, Warner Bros. announced at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival in France on June 8. The three shorts will be released in 3D, starting with Daffy's Rhapsody in theaters November 18 to accompany Happy Feet 2, the sequel of the dancing penguins movie. Two of the new shorts — Daffy's Rhapsody and I Tawt I Taw a Puddy Tat — will feature the late Mel Blanc, a legendary voiceover actor known as The Man of a Thousand Voices, in various roles, including Daffy Duck. Daffy's Rhapsody follows a persistent Elmer Fudd chasing Daffy Duck during a musical performance that includes his rendition of Liszt's "Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2." Tweety Bird and Sylvester the Cat star in I Tawt I Taw a Puddy Tat, featuring the classic game of cat and bird with the hit title song performed by Blanc, which sold more than three million copies worldwide when originally released. These new shorts follow the launch of The Looney Tunes Show, a modern cartoon series launched in May on the cable/satellite channel The Cartoon Network, which finds the sarcastic Bugs Bunny and the scatterbrained Daffy Duck living together as unlikely roommates.
