Tween YouTube star Talia Joy dies, fans pay tribute

Young YouTube star Talia Joy Castellano, a cancer patient who became an honorary CoverGirl for her makeup video tutorials, died at the age 13 last week.

The tween ended her six-year battle with a form of nerve cancer called neuroblastoma and leukaemia on July 16 in the Arnold Palmer Hospital in Orlando, Florida, news agencies reported.

Talia inspired millions of netizens with her make-up tutorials and touching videos. She continued to make videos for her fans throughout her battle, finding respite in eyeshadows and nail polish from her hospital bed.

According to hollywoodlife.com, Talia's fans were so inspired by her that they started ticking off things on Talia's bucket list in her honour, sharing photos of themselves parasailing, getting tattoos and pulling all-nighters.

During Talia's final days, her family gathered the photos into a Facebook album called Talia's Bucket List, sharing them with the world via social media.

Ellen Degeneres and Kendall Jenner are some of the stars sending their condolences to the family. Degeneres tweeted that she was so sad to have "lost a very special girl". - July 20, 2013.

Tripping on Ryan Gosling’s “Only God Forgives”

Ryan Gosling's latest film, "Only God Forgives," has deeply divided critics and the Canadian actor concedes that the blood-spattered crime thriller set in Bangkok's underworld of boxing clubs and brothels may not appeal to everyone.

"The film is kind of like a drug," the former child star who appeared on "The Mickey Mouse Club" TV show, told reporters ahead of the film's opening in US theatres yesterday.

"You either have a good trip or a bad trip."

For critics at the Cannes Film Festival, where the film -written and directed by Denmark's Nicolas Winding Refn - was shown in May, it was a bit of both. It prompted boos and sent some critics scurrying from the press screening, while others praised the film's artistic merits.

With its minimal dialogue and gruesome scenes of torture and bloodletting, the highly stylised film is not for the squeamish.

The Hollywood Reporter described it as a "menacingly atmospheric mood piece that will not disappoint devotees of the Nicolas Winding Refnchurch of fetishistic hyper-violence."

The film offered an opportunity for Gosling, who was nominated for a best actor Oscar in 2007 for the drama "Half Nelson" and starred in "Lars and the Real Girl" and "Blue Valentine," to reunite with Refn.

The pair collaborated on the 2011 art-house drama "Drive," which earned a best director award for Refn at Cannes.

"I wanted to work with Nicolas," Gosling said, adding that for Refn the violent tone of the film is "part of the language which he uses to communicate."

Gosling, 32, plays Julian, a brooding American fugitive in Bangkok who runs a boxing club as a front for his drug business. After his brother is killed for murdering a young Thai prostitute, his gangster mother, played by British actress Kristin Scott Thomas, arrives in Bangkok and demands bloody revenge.

But a mysterious, sword-wielding former policeman with a penchant for chopping off body parts has other plans.

Gosling, who has achieved cult status online and even inspired a coloring book, said Refn shot the film chronologically so the cast was not really sure of the movie they were making.

"You just sort of go along for the ride," said the actor, who is editing his directorial feature film debut, "How to Catch a Monster," based on his original screenplay and starring Eva Mendes and "Mad Men's" Christina Hendricks.

Unlike the story-driven "Drive," Gosling said "Only God Forgives" is more of an experience and less of a story. "You give in to the mystery," he said. – Reuters, July 20, 2013.

Murakami, Couto chosen for Neustadt Prize, ups chances for Nobel

The nine-nominee shortlist for the 2014 Neustadt International Prize for Literature has been announced, with Nobel Prize favourite Hakuri Murakami and Camöes Prize winner Mia Couto in the mix.

The Neustadt Prize is the only one of its kind based in the US; poets, playwrights and novelists are considered equally eligible for the biennial award.

Like the Nobel Prize in Literature, the US$50,000 (RM150,000) Neustadt is awarded to a living author in recognition of their literary achievement; the Neustadt is open to authors writing in any language, as long as a representative work is available in English.

Though the $50,000 prize, certainly a significant sum, is dwarfed by the US$1.1m Nobel Prize, the Neustadt makes much of its other associations with the otherwise inscrutable Nobel.

Four previous Neustadt Laureates have gone on to become Nobel Laureates, as have a total of 18 shortlist nominees, most recently exemplified by 1998 Neustadt candidate and 2012 Nobel Prize winner Mo Yan.

Last year's Neustadt was awarded to Indian-Canadian writer Rohinton Mistry, author of "Such a Long Journey," "Family Matters," and several short story collections.

Established in 1970, the prize is awarded every even-numbered year, with its jury selected by the executive director of literary journal "World Literature Today." The 2014 prize will be announced in fall 2014.

The 2013 Thriller Awards, held over the weekend, saw Anne Rice (pic) named ThrillerMaster, while debut effort "The 500" from Matthew Quirk won Best First Novel and CJ Lyons's "Blind Faith" was deemed "Best e-Book Original Novel."

Anne Rice is best-known for her "Vampire Chronicles" series but has also addressed spiritual topics, and returned to fiction with "The Wolf Gift Chronicles," starting with "The Wolf Gift" in 2012, and whose second entry, "The Wolves of Midwinter," is due in October.

The Thriller Writers' Silver Bullet awards are not in fact part of an annual hitlist for werewolf hunters, but a recognition of contribution to the advancement of literacy, this year going to Steve Berry, author of the "Cotton Malone" series of historical conspiracy novels, and the United Service Organization, with which the International Thriller Writers has previously partnered for various international tours.

Hotels bite into cronut mania

The New York pastry craze that has inspired pre-dawn, mile-long line-ups, and a price-gouging black market, has caught on in the hotel industry, with in-house pastry chefs around the world recreating the hybrid 'cronut' for their guests.

And in the last few weeks, hotel pastry chefs have caught on to the worldwide trend, recreating or reinventing the hybrid pastry for their guests, points out HotelChatter.com.

This week, for instance, the Mandarin Oriental Cake Shop in Jakarta unveiled its new lines of "Kronuts" spelled with a 'K,' an important distinction given that Ansel has trademarked the cronut for his own.

The MO's version is sprinkled with cinnamon, sugar, and topped with vanilla cream and sliced almonds.

At the Acme Hotel, Chicago, pastry chef Chris Teixeira sells "doughssants" which, instead of being round, are rectangular in shape and filled with chocolate-raspberry, blueberry-lavender and coffee-cream cheese.

Pastry chef Gareth Mullins has also imported the craze to Dublin, Ireland, where he works at The Marker Hotel.

Like the Dominique Ansel Bakery, where demand outstrips the meagre supply of just 300 cronuts a day, The Marker Hotel's cronuts are made in limited supply and a new flavor created every week. The New York bakery launches a new flavour every month.

This week's flavour: coffee and bitter chocolate.

The cronut has become nothing short of an international phenomenon, with copycat chefs from Japan to Australia either reproducing straight-up knock-offs, or peddling reworked versions of the flaky, deep-fried dessert and rechristening them Zonuts, Frissants, Cro-Nuts, Cronies and Dossants. – AFP/Relaxnews, July 20, 2013.

Are you impulsive and an idealist? Chances are your favorite ice cream flavour is vanilla.

On the other hand, is your go-to flavour at the ice cream parlor strawberry? You're more likely to be tolerant, devoted and an introvert.

At least that's according to "smell and taste expert" Dr Alan Hirsch, who was commissioned by Baskin-Robbins to psychoanalyse our ice cream preferences and connect them with personality traits.

Among some of the more interesting findings, is that though vanilla -- the basic, classic standard -- has traditionally been linked to more prosaic, dull and predictable personalities, Hirsch, a neurologist and psychiatrist, says that those who order vanilla are easily suggestible, but also impulsive idealists.

Likewise, despite its "bright taste profile" and schizophrenic colours, rainbow sherbet belies a darker side, as people who choose this flavour are more likely to be analytical, decisive and pessimistic, he said.

For the report, adults aged 18 to 65 completed psychiatric and personality tests which were then analysed and correlated with ice cream preferences.

Here's how the other ice cream flavours stacked up.

Chocolate: Dramatic, lively, charming, flirtatious, seductive, gullible
Mint chocolate chip: Argumentative, frugal, cautious
Cookie dough: Ambitious, competitive, visionary
Pralines and cream: Loving, supportive, avoid the spotlight

Rainbow sherbet: Analytical, decisive, pessimistic

Nestlé also had the same idea for their site which claims that those who prefer butter pecan can be characterised as fiscally conservative, hardworking, devoted, respectful and extremely sensitive to other people's feelings.

A big-nosed dinosaur that may have used its impressive horns as a mate magnet and to ward off competitors has been unearthed in a fossil-rich deposit in southern Utah, scientists said yesterday.

The novel species, Nasutoceratops or "big-nose horned face," is the only known member of a group of dinosaurs thought to have lived 76 million years ago on a land mass in Western North America isolated by an ancient seaway, said Scott Sampson, one of the paleontologists who discovered the extinct reptile.

The new animal, described in the current issue of the British scientific journal Proceedings of the Royal Society, is from a previously unknown branch of horned dinosaurs and stands out for horns that extend over its eyes toward the tip of a prominent nose, Sampson said.

"This animal is bizarre. It takes horns to another level," he told Reuters in a telephone interview.

The outsized, cold-blooded creature used a beak-like mouth to crop tropical plants, which it chewed with hundreds of teeth that were replaceable like a shark's, he said.

The find in the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument in Utah provides the strongest evidence that the southern portion of ancient western North America was home to its own diverse dinosaur community.

Dramatic exposures of rock from the age of dinosaurs at the Grand Staircase-Escalante have in the last 13 years led to "a completely new dinosaur assemblage we didn't even know existed," Sampson said.

Roughly 20 dinosaur types have been found at sites in southern Utah, upending the notion that there were no new frontiers for paleontologists.

"Many thought we had found all the things we were going to find but we're just beginning to scratch the surface and understand the world of dinosaurs," Sampson said. – Reuters, July 18, 2013.

Eating some fish during pregnancy can curb anxiety, study shows

Eating one serving of fish a week during pregnancy may lower a mother-to-be's anxiety, a new Brazilian study finds.

Research showed that pregnant women who never or rarely ate dark or oily fish (salmon and tuna, for example) were 53 percent more likely to experience high levels of anxiety in their third trimester compared with women who ate fish at least once a week.

Vegetarian women were also 25% more likely to have anxiety compared with women who had consumed some fish and meat. Researchers from the Federal University of Pelotas recruited 9,500 women for the study, grouping the women based on their dietary patterns. At 32 weeks of pregnancy, the women completed questionnaires about their anxiety levels.

"In order to have a healthy pregnancy, women need to follow a healthy diet, and not something special for pregnancy," said study author Juliana Vaz, according to LiveScience. She recommends a diet rich in whole grains, vegetables, meat, poultry, and fish.

As to why fish had an effect on anxiety isn't clear but the researchers suggest it could be due to omega-3 fatty acids.

But some experts warn that eating fish during pregnancy could increase your baby's exposure to mercury. Consider bypassing larger fish, such as shark and swordfish, which can contain higher levels of mercury, in favour of anchovies, salmon, herring, and sardines, advises Dr. Roger W. Harms, a pregnancy specialist at the Mayo Clinic in the US. - AFP, July 19, 2013

Alpe d’Huez double in store on Tour’s Queen stage

The 172.5-kilometre ride from Gap north to the finish 1,850 metres up is the Queen stage of this year's Tour, with three category-two climbs lying in wait as well as the double ascent of what is one of the most famous mountains in the history of the race.

The first climb starts in Bourg d'Oisans and takes the peloton all the way up the 21 bends of the road to the summit, each one with a plaque containing the name of a former stage winner on the mountain.

However, instead of going all the way to the top, the riders will turn off early for a short descent before taking on a climb that has never featured in the Tour before, the category two Col de Sarenne.

Its summit is at just under 2,000 metres, but it is the hair-raising downhill section rather than the climb here which will have kept riders awake on Wednesday night.

As long as they survive that, they will go all the way up the Alpe this time, all 13.8km at an average gradient of 8.1%.

All of this will be played out to a backdrop of hundreds of thousands of fans who will line the road up the mountain, including huge numbers of Dutch, who always flock here when the Tour passes, thanks in large part to the country's proud tradition of success on the climb.

Three riders from the Netherlands have won on L'Alpe d'Huez twice, including Joop Zoetemelk, the last Dutchman to win the yellow jersey back in 1980.

On this occasion the Tour is Chris Froome's to lose, and he will be dreaming of recording a fourth stage win so far, while Alberto Contador tries desperately to close the gap.

However, race organisers will be desperately hoping that the weather does not put a spanner in the works - storms are forecast throughout the day in the French Alps and there have been rumours that the second climb of the Alpe may have to be cancelled. - AFP, July 18, 2013.

The charismatic Portuguese, in his first game back after six seasons away, led a side brimming with new faces to a 1-0 "training session" win over Singha All-Star XI.

But the game, in front of tens of thousands of blue-shirted Thai fans, was completely overshadowed by news that Chelsea had tabled an undisclosed bid for the unsettled England striker.

Mourinho said the bid, for a reported 10 million pounds (RM48.5 million) was "clean" and "ethical", and he contradicted reports that Juan Mata or David Luiz had been offered as make-weights.

"End of story - we made a bid and now it's up to Man United and it's up to the player," he said, adding that Chelsea were not targeting any other players.

"We love the player, we are interested in the player, we made the bid. We have nothing more to say and nothing more to do. And now we have to respect and be ethical in this process," Mourinho said.

"The official bid is just about a certain amount of money, it doesn't involve players and it doesn't involve players in the possibility of the negotiations to continue," he added, raising the prospect of another offer.

Rooney is said to have asked for a transfer in May and he lasted just a few hours of United's pre-season tour before departing with a minor hamstring injury.

This week, reports said he was "angry and confused" at comments from new boss David Moyes which suggested he would play second fiddle to Robin van Persie this season.

Mourinho's Chelsea are rated as the biggest threat to Manchester United's title defence as Moyes attempts to follow Alex Ferguson's 27-year, 38-trophy reign.

And Chelsea got off to a positive start under Mourinho by beating the All Stars - who shocked United in Bangkok last week - 1-0 courtesy of a Romelu Lukaku first-half penalty.

Kevin De Bruyne was a chief threat on his debut, after returning from a loan spell at Werder Bremen, and he whistled a thunderous shot past the uprights on 23 minutes.

Lukaku was also posing problems early on and he forced a sharp save from the goalkeeper after galloping through one-on-one on the half-hour.

But the first goal of Mourinho's new era came from the spot after Brazilian right-back Wallace, Chelsea's new signing from Fluminense, went down under a challenge in the box.

And Lukaku made no mistake with his left foot as he drove the penalty low and to the 'keeper's right for his first goal in a Chelsea shirt, with 35 minutes gone.

The six foot four inches (1.93 metre) Belgian might have had another but his first-time shot in the box was again parried away.

Both teams switched nearly their entire teams at half-time and it was a disjointed second period from the Blues.

"It was a good experience for us, because they were very well organised tactically, they were very compact... I think my team were always in control," Mourinho said.

"It was a good training session," he added.

Mourinho said veteran midfielder Frank Lampard had been left out as a precaution after taking a knock to the kidneys.

Pasangan kontroversi, Alvin Tan (gambar) dan Vivan Lee tidak dilepaskan dengan jaminan di mahkamah kerana mereka ada kecenderungan untuk memuat naik kandungan yang boleh membangkitkan kemarahan orang ramai, kata , Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail.

"Selepas mempertimbang undang-undang dan fakta berhubung kejadian itu, Jabatan Peguam Negara memutuskan untuk mengenakan pendakwaan terhadap mereka.

"Tindakan mendakwa mereka dibuat lanjutan kejadian seorang individu diculik dan dipukul sekumpulan lelaki yang dipercayai rentetan perbuatan mereka (Tan dan Lee)" kata Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail.

Pada kenyataan media hari ini, Peguam Negara itu, berkata Jabatan Peguam Negara meminta semua pihak supaya berhenti memberi kenyataan atau membuat spekulasi berhubung kes itu.

Tan atau nama penuhnya, Tan Jye Yee, 25, dan Lee atau nama penuhnya, Lee May Lilng, 24, mengaku tidak bersalah di Mahkamah Sesyen Kuala Lumpur atas ketiga-tiga pertuduhan.

Mereka dituduh berhubung perbuatan mempersenda umat Islam dan Ramadan dalam Facebook serta mempamerkan gambar-gambar lucah dalam blog mereka dan tidak dibenar ikat jamin sementara menunggu perbicaraan.

Bagi pertuduhan pertama, mereka didakwa bersama-sama menerbitkan satu
penerbitan menghasut di laman Facebook 'Alvin and Vivian - Alvivi' pada satu pautan yang mengandungi gambar dan komen bertajuk 'Selamat Berbuka Puasa (dengan Bak Kut Teh…wangi, enak, menyelerakan) bersama logo Halal.

Usul heret Ahli Parlimen Simpang Renggam ke Jawatankuasa Parlimen ditolak

Pakatan Rakyat (PR) hari ini gagal mengheret Ahli Parlimen Simpang Renggam Liang Teck Meng ke Jawatankuasa Hak dan Kebebasan Parlimen berhubung dakwaan Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim 'mempunyai 20 akaun bank di luar negara.'

Sebanyak 107 undi menolak usul terhadap ahli parlimen dari Barisan Nasional (BN) itu manakala 60 bersetuju.

Ahli Parlimen Jelutong, Jeff Ooi membuat usul itu selepas memfailkannya di pejabat Speaker dua minggu lalu.

Ooi mahu merujuk Liang kepada jawatankuasa berkenaan selepas mendakwa Anwar mempunyai 20 akaun bank dan memiliki $66 juta (RM209 juta) dan $49 juta (RM123 juta).

Anwar menafi tuduhan itu dan mencabar Liang mengulangi dakwaan berkenaan di luar Parlimen supaya boleh disabitkan di mahkamah jika tidak benar.

Semasa perbahasan, Ahli Parlimen Tanjung Karang Datuk Seri Noh Mohd Omar sempat menuduh Rafizi Ramli sebagai 'pondan' kerana tidak berani menuduh pengerusi dan timbalan pengerusi SPR mempunyai kaitan dengan pakar runding dakwat kekal Mohamed Salleh Md Ali di luar Dewan Rakyat.

"Cakap tak serupa bikin, tak bermaruah jika tidak berani membuat pertuduhan di luar dewan. Kalau berani sebut nama pengerusi dan timbalan pengerusi SPR di luar dewan," ujar Noh semasa berucap di Dewan Rakyat sambil mengulang dakwaan tersebut di luar dewan semasa satu sidang media.

Sementara itu, Ahli Parlimen Raub Datuk Mohd Ariff Sabri Abdul Aziz meminta wakil WikiLeaks agar tampil ke Dewan Rakyat seperti mana wakil APCO yang pernah dipanggil semasa mengemukakan usul kepada ketua pembangkang Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahiim.

Kebanyakan ahli Parlimen dari Pakatan Rakyat (PR) menggesa ahli parlimen agar berlaku adil dengan mengundi Liang dirujuk kepada jawatankuasa Parlimen berikutan kenyataan beliau dianngap menghina Dewan Rakyat. Antara yang menggesa sedemikian ialah daripada ahli parlimen Bukit Katil dan Bayan Baru,

Menanggguh sidang pertama dewan yang ke-13, Speaker Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia berkata ahli parlimen kali ini telah mengemukakan usul yang lebih matang berbanding sebelum ini dan menegaskan langkah berkenaan perlu bagi memacu usaha transformasi negara. - 18 Julai, 2013.
