Lochte wins five, still claims underdog status

SHANGHAI, July 31 — Ryan Lochte claimed five gold medals at the world swimming championships in Shanghai but was convinced he was still playing second fiddle to teammate Michael Phelps.

Lochte's fourth individual gold medal, and fifth overall, was achieved in the men's 400 metres individual medley. He led from start to finish and was never really challenged even though he chopped down a gear on the final leg of freestyle when the race had already been virtually assured.

"It's been a hard eight days," Lochte told reporters. "Being able to do the 4IM at the end of the week. I am glad the meet is over."

Lochte's win ensured he repeated the feat of two years ago in Rome when he also won both the 200 and 400 individual medley titles. Hungary's Tamas Darnyi is the only other man to have won both medley titles in consecutive championships.

Lochte also won the 200 freestyle and 200 backstroke and was a member of the gold medal-winning 4x200 freestyle relay team. He was also only one of two swimmers to set a world record during these championships when he pipped Michael Phelps for the 200 individual medley gold.

China's Sun Yang broke the 1500 metres freestyle record in the final men's individual event on the programme today.

Lochte, who turns 27 on Aug. 3, was named the male swimmer of the meeting, usurping his more illustrious compatriot, though the big challenge is to ensure he continues his hot run of form into next year's London Olympics.

Phelps said that he had failed to fully commit to the intensive training schedule mapped out for him, and the fact he pushed his teammate so hard should worry the Florida-based Lochte.

"I don't think I am the top dog," Lochte said. "I have a whole year to work hard and train hard.

"For the most part, I am not really happy with the meet; I mean winning five gold medals is great but I know I can go faster.

"I will make sure next year I will have a perfect swim." — Reuters

Sun burst caps final day of world championships

SHANGHAI, July 31 — China's Sun Yang provided a record-breaking finale to the world swimming championships today, while Ryan Lochte and Michael Phelps set up the potential of a mouth-watering showdown at next year's London Olympics.

The long-stroking Sun, roared on by his home crowd, produced a storming final 100 metres to break Grant Hackett's long-standing 1500 metres freestyle world record by clocking 14 minutes 34.14 seconds — just the second mark to be bettered in Shanghai.

"All the pain that I endured during my training in the past had paid off," Sun told reporters. "I didn't think too much about it (the record) before the race.

"I just wanted to swim with my own rhythm and in a 1500-metre race, you need to feel good about the swim. I think this has to do with all the hard work that I put in."

Lochte picked up his fifth gold of the championships when he won the men's 400 metres individual medley, to add to the 200 IM, 200 freestyle, 200 backstroke and the 4x200 freestyle relay titles.

The 26-year-old American was named the male swimmer of the meeting for his performances, which included the only other world record in the 200 IM.

Compatriot Michael Phelps, however, had an understated championships yet still won four gold medals.

The most successful Olympian of all time won both the 100 and 200 butterfly titles as well as gold medals in the 4x200 freestyle relay and the 4x100 medley relay.

He also took two silvers, behind Lochte in the 200 freestyle and 200 IM, and a bronze in the 4x100 freestyle relay.

The 26-year-old Phelps had admitted to not really committing fully to his training regime after the highs of Beijing, when he won an unprecedented eight gold medals, and was using Shanghai as a test for where he stood 12 months out from his final Olympics in London.

The fact he was able to push Lochte so close in a number of events and produce highly credible times suggested he and coach Bob Bowman had a more than adequate base to build from and the London programme looks even more enticing with the true emergence of Lochte as a mature and intelligent opponent.

"The biggest thing (at this meet) was really trying to swim faster than I did last year," Phelps said.

"With the preparations that I had, I am fairly satisfied.

"Everything that went on here is going to be motivation for next year. We have 12 months to prepare for London and that's what I will find myself doing."

American Rebecca Soni was named the female swimmer of the meeting after she added the 50 metres breaststroke bronze to her three gold medals in the 100-200 breaststroke and the 4x100 medley relay.

"I'm very happy with the race, and excited for the result," Soni said. "I had a lot of fun. It is great fun for me this week."

Soni's compatriot Jessica Hardy won the 50 breaststroke and coupled with wins for Elizabeth Beisel and Lochte in the 400 metres individual medley races and the men's 4x100 medley relay team winning gold, the US were able to sneak past the host nation to head the medal table.

The US won 16 gold medals in the pool, and 17 overall, just nudging past China, who ended with 15 golds after they swept all 10 titles in the diving.

Therese Alshammar of Sweden won the women's 50 freestyle and set down a marker for London, though the powerful Dutch team again proved their sprint freestyle credentials when Ranomi Kromowidjojo and Marleen Veldhuis took silver and bronze respectively.

Britain's Liam Tancock retained his men's 50 metres backstroke title though the event is not on the London programme. — Reuters

String of hits brings smile back to Bollywood

Posted: 31 Jul 2011 01:21 AM PDT

Bollywood's upward trend started after the end of the back-to-back World Cup and IPL cricket tournaments with the Salman Khan action comedy "Ready". — AFP/Relaxnews pic

MUMBAI, July 31 — Bollywood has had a better start to the second half of 2011 after a tough first six months of empty cinemas and postponed releases caused by clashes with major cricket tournaments, analysts say.

Long queues and "house full" signs have returned to cinemas in India's entertainment capital Mumbai and across the country since the start of June for a string of films that have proved a hit with audiences.

The upward trend started after the end of the back-to-back World Cup and Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket tournaments with the Salman Khan action comedy "Ready".

Since then, Sanjay Dutt's slapstick "Double Dhamaal", Aamir Khan's comedy "Delhi Belly", the thriller "Murder 2" and the Hrithik Roshan-Katrina Kaif road movie "Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara" (You Only Live Once) have all done well.

The boxofficeindia.com website, which tracks industry takings, on Wednesday said that "Zindagi" had taken 443.2 million rupees (RM29.7 million) since it opened on July 15, calling it a "hit".

"Murder 2" had taken 444.7 million rupees in under two weeks, deeming it a "blockbuster", while "Delhi Belly" had returns of 540.3 million rupees in three weeks, classing it as a "super hit".

"Double Dhamaal" was assessed as "above average" with takings of 452.1 million rupees in four weeks, according to the site.

"Singham", a crime drama starring Ajay Devgn, has had rave reviews since it came out last week and is also expected to do well.

"We've never had it so good. We've never had four successes back to back," said trade analyst Komal Nahta, referring to "Ready", "Double Dhamaal", "Murder 2" and "Zindagi".

"They were good films. There weren't too many releases in March or April but thereafter 'Ready' worked and the other films worked," Nahta, who writes for India's biggest film trade journal, Film Information, told AFP.

"When the World Cup and IPL were on there wasn't much filmed entertainment, so there was a hunger for films and people rushed to the cinemas."

The Indian releases had been expected to suffer as they hit screens around the same time as the last instalment of the Harry Potter series, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2" and the latest "Transformers" movie.

The boxofficeindia.com site said that first-week takings for the English version of the final Potter movie were 102.6 million rupees and 61.4 million in Hindi, as of Wednesday.

The English version of "Transformers: Dark of the Moon" had taken 125.3 million rupees and 49.6 million rupees in Hindi in three weeks, it added.

The results were more positive news for the Indian film industry, which has seen overall revenues fall 20 per cent in the past three years from US$2.3 billion in 2008 to US$1.85 billion in 2010.

Domestic box office revenues still contribute 75 per cent of an Indian film's earnings, according to research by KPMG.

Poor quality content, rising overheads, the global economic crisis and an increase in other ways for people to spend their spare time have all been blamed for the downturn.

Vinod Mirani, another industry analyst, said the recent successes proved that good films would work no matter what.

"It's as simple as that," he added.

All eyes are now turned to the next big release, "Aarakshan" (Reservation), starring Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan, Saif Ali Khan and Deepika Padukone, on August 12.

The film has already proved controversial as it tackles the sensitive issue of reserving posts in the government and education sector based on caste.

Nahta said concerns expressed by political groups representing low-caste Hindus were unlikely to harm the movie.

"In fact, controversy more often than not helps a film," he added. — AFP/Relaxnews

Putrajaya hadapi cabaran jurang ekonomi antara kelas, kata menteri

Posted: 31 Jul 2011 12:23 AM PDT

Najib mencari ‘Talian Hayat’

Posted: 30 Jul 2011 07:03 PM PDT

Mengapa Umno terpaksa singkirkan Najib?

Sebaliknya kata-kata tidak cermat, seperti 'you help me dan I help u' memperkuhkan pelbagai amalan buruk dalam rasuah politik pilihanraya. Beliau hanya mahu 'sokongan' semua.

Kini Najib berdepan pelbagai ujian getir.

Jalan To Kong (Temple Street), Malacca: there are three places of worship along this road; the Sri Poyyatha Vinayagar Moorthi temple (fore-ground), the Kampong Kling Mosque (with the minaret) and at the far end the Cheng Hoon Teng temple. JULY 31 — As the legend goes, Malacca was founded by Parameswara, the fugitive with his group fleeing from Singapore, about 500 years ago. Later he went on to establish the first Malacca Sultanate in the 15th century.

At that time Malacca was a natural port that sheltered the sailors from the north-east and south-west monsoons in this region. The monsoons were one of the keys to the success of Malacca as a trading port in the early sailing years. The winds brought the Arabs, Indians and then the Europeans from the West and the Javanese, Bugis and Chinese from the East.

As years went by, due to its increasing strategic and commercial importance, Malacca became a battle ground as the colonial world powers and the local warlords fought to control it.

But despite all the wars and violence in the waters of the Malacca Straits, many of the early sailors, traders, pirates, warriors and labourers of various races established their new homes in Malacca.

Jalan Hang Jebat, Malacca. This street has many fine examples of the Nyonya style architecture and auspicious ornamental facades built in the early part of the 20th century. This group of wealthy Malaccans displayed their financial position and social status openly.

This street has many fine examples of the Nyonya style architecture and auspicious ornamental facades built in the early part of the 20th century. This group of wealthy Malaccans displayed their financial position and social status openly.

By the early 20th century, many Chinese had settled and set up homes in Malacca. Some of the Chinese merchants had become very wealthy doing business with the colonial powers.

One group in particular, calling themselves the Baba Nyonya or Peranakan, became millionaires and they all strived to build houses that symbolised their newfound wealth.

This group kept their Chinese religious and cultural beliefs and customs but remixed their language, food, dressing, music and dance with the local Malays, Portuguese and English.

Their deep Chinese roots meant a heritage full of myths, legends and stories. Many of them continued to practise their religious customs and rituals. The rich among them built impressive buildings and adorned their facades with auspicious shapes, images and symbols. The poorer families made do with items made of paper and ink which they stuck on their walls and doors.

No 17, Jalan Hang Jebat, Malacca. This is one of my watercolours done in the 1990, from a collection of 64 paintings of the facades of early shophouses in Penang, Malacca, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. These watercolours were my way of contributing to the documentation and conservation of our architectural heritage.

The dragon and the phoenix are the most popular mythological creatures in Chinese art. There is a pair of colourful flying phoenix, made of broken coloured ceramic tiles, adorning the front of this house, settled in just below the two large semi-circular windows. This fantastic creature is the queen of birds and it symbolises the sun, the heat of summer and the bountiful harvest.

In the middle of this pair of birds is a bouquet of colourful flowers also made of broken coloured ceramic tiles and it signifies a fruitful season. Different flowers represent each of the months of the year and the plum blossom indicates the coming of spring.

This type of common floral arrangement, set in colourful square frames, in different sizes and combination, is repeated in between the windows and the sides. The rest of the facade is painted all over with different floral motifs.

What can these artistic combinations of bird and flower images mean to us today? In the old days these were important symbolic and metaphysical protections for the houseowner and his family and businesses.

But many of these families (and their fortunes) have come and gone. New entrepreneurs have moved in to this touristy part of Malacca.

These new tenants or owners are also concerned about prosperity and wealth but these days they rely more on the steady supply of cheaper products from China, Philippines and Thailand and cheap labour from neighbouring countries.

No.78, Jalan Kampong Pantai, Malacca. This is another one of my watercolours. The Greek-like pediment of this shophouse, constructed 78 years ago, is broken in at the top and standing in the middle of this opening is a statue of the Chinese Goddess of Mercy and she is surrounded by a lotus garden and flowering plants.

This is an exquisite artistic expression of the Baba Nyonya period of the shophouses in Malacca. On this facade, the East and the West come freely together.

The Western root is in the triangular pediment which is from the Greek temples and this architectural form had come through the maritime trade route from Europe. The creative and unknown artists and craftsmen proudly put it on top of the first floor facade of this building with the other European-looking cornices, pilasters, bases and capitals.

The Chinese builders confidently inserted on top of this Greek temple pediment one of their popular goddesses — the Goddess of Mercy, Kuan Yin. This Buddhist bodhisattva has a long history which includes Roman and Indian legacies but when it reached ancient China, the Chinese decided to turn it from a male figure into a female one.

Accompanying her in her lotus garden are other flowers, birds, bats, and a pair of lions or unicorn-looking animals. This facade is a classic symbol of the marriage of the different faiths and a trust in the good omens. It's also a uniquely Malaysian architectural heritage.

Although all this artistic imagination, still on ago old walls, had a metaphysical origin in the past, their aspirations were for the common good; living a life of peace with your neighbours and caring for a sustainable harvest or relationship with Nature are still clearly relevant to us today.

A fabulous buka puasa awaits at Vistana

Posted: 29 Jul 2011 05:22 PM PDT

A selection of ulam, kerabu, ikan masin and tempeh... yummy. — Pictures by Eu Hooi Khaw

KUALA LUMPUR, July 30 — The month of Ramadan begins in just a few days, and all the hotels and restaurants in town have already planned their buka puasa menus, with some already doing previews of the food.

One of these is the Vistana Hotel in Kuala Lumpur, which has already held four previews of its buka puasa spread for guests and friends of the hotel.

Relaxing... the poolside setting for the stalls.

I managed to catch the last of the previews on Monday, and I was astonished to see how well attended it was. The dining room on the third floor of the hotel, which opens out to the pool, had a festive air, with the ceiling draped in colourful batik. The room seats 300 people, but if there are more, another room for 150 can be opened.

It was like it was already Ramadan. At 7.30pm, diners went to get their food, long queues formed around the roast lamb and satay stall.  I headed for the appetiser side where there were fewer people, and helped myself to kerabu pucuk paku, papaya salad and Thai mango salad, and some fruit rojak. A piece of murtabak and I was ready to eat. There was also roti jala with chicken curry on this side of the pool.

They turned out to be good choices. The fruit rojak of papaya, pineapple and rose apple had all the right nuances in the sauce which was not too sweet. The kerabu pucuk paku was of young shoots, so it had my vote, as did the papaya salad or som tam, and the mango salad with its right balance of hot, sweet and sour.

A whole roast lamb at the BBQ section.

The murtabak was filled generously with a spiced minced chicken filling. The roti had crispy edges and a bite spilled out the delicious filling.  I went back to the Makanan Kampung section, and was delighted with the Masak Tempoyak Ikan Sembilang. I had a small chunk of ikan patin in a light tempoyak or fermented durian sauce. It was scrumptious, so I went back for more.

The sweet, salty and fruity Masak Lemak Ikan Masin dan Nenas makes you want to eat more rice. I wasn't so fond of the Masak Lemak Nangka though. Ayam Percik is usually chicken marinated with lemongrass, chillies, shallots, garlic, turmeric, tamarind and coconut milk,  and roasted over a charcoal fire. This one had a thick spiced gravy covering the chicken, and had a balanced flavour.

The roast lamb, marinated with a lot of herbs before grilling, was tender, and tasted good in its lamb gravy. No wonder it was so popular. I should have eaten the chicken and beef satay without the peanut sauce – it was too sweet! I always wonder why so much sugar is used in both the marinade for the meat, and the sauce for satay. It's like having a dessert instead of something savoury.

I had missed the Mamak food corner, so I went back for some Masak Daging Hitam, fried bittergourd with egg, Kobis Masak Mamak and Bendi (ladies fingers) curry.

Fried Kwayteow hot from the wok was done well, and this together with some Mee Siam had me nicely filled. Later I went back for ice kacang and a jelly from the very colourful dessert table inside the room. It had rows of different coloured jellies, cakes (including tiramisu), mango pudding, chocolate mousse and kuih, pengat pisang and other sweet bubur.

Later, Malay chef Hamdan Harun (left) pointed out the more than 100 dishes I had not tasted, and these included ikan bakar, bubur lambuk, pasta, a few asam pedas dishes, sup utara, sup kambing berempah, beehoon sup utara, nasi kandar and other curries and kerabu. There is also teh tarik and Nescafe tarik, air cincau and air longan. A jug of air selasih and some dates are placed on each table.

At RM43++ this Ramadan buffet is really value for money. Children between six and 12 are charged RM28++.

The Vistana Hotel is probably the best connected in the city in terms of transport. You can reach there by LRT, monorail, even the KL Hop on Hop Off double-decker city tour buses.

It's located at 9 Jalan Lumut, off Jalan Ipoh, 50400 Kuala Lumpur. Tel: 03-4042 8000 ext 8208. It's best to book as the Ramadan buffet is immensely popular, though I was told the first few days of the puasa month is usually quiet, as it's about breaking fast at home with the family.

De Jonge and Simpson share lead at Greenbrier

Posted: 30 Jul 2011 07:05 AM PDT

NEW YORK, July 30 — Zimbabwe's Brendon de Jonge made the most of his growing comfort level on the Old White Course by charging into a tie for the lead in yesterday's second round of the Greenbrier Classic in West Virginia.

The burly 31-year-old, who finished third in the event's inaugural edition here 12 months ago, fired a sparkling three-under-par 67 to vault to the top of the standings at The Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs.

De Jonge rebounded from an early bogey with four birdies to post a seven-under total of 133, ending a sun-splashed day level with American Webb Simpson, who sank a six-foot birdie putt at the last for a 68.

Former Masters champion Trevor Immelman of South Africa, who set the first-round pace with a sizzling 64, was a further stroke back after carding a 70 while American world No. 6 Phil Mickelson missed the cut after shooting a 73.

De Jonge, who had opened with a 66 in pursuit of a maiden victory on the PGA Tour, was delighted with his form at the picturesque resort venue situated in the foothills of the Allegheny Mountains.

"I started out a little bit shaky but I made some good pars at the beginning of the round and got some momentum going," de Jonge told reporters. "It was nice. I felt like I had pretty good control of the ball."

The Zimbabwean's best PGA Tour finish was his third place in last year's Greenbrier Classic and he said he had liked the par-70 layout when he first saw it.

"I felt comfortable here from the start and I love the changes (since last year)," added de Jonge, who went to university at nearby Virginia Tech. "It feels good out there. It's a comfortable place for me."

Long-awaited breakthrough

De Jonge posted three top-three finishes on the 2010 PGA Tour and believes he simply needs to stay out of his own way if he is to pull off a long-awaited breakthrough victory on the US circuit.

"It's very, very difficult to win out here; it's difficult to win anywhere," he said. "The biggest thing is just getting out of my own way.

"Staying in your own routine . . . is the best way to put it."

Britain's Brian Davis birdied five of his last nine holes for a scintillating 64 to lie two shots off the pace, level with Americans Gary Woodland (70), Michael Letzig (66), Derek Lamely (70) and Scott Stallings (65).

The cut fell at one-over 141, with four-times major champion Mickelson the biggest name to fall by the wayside — his first missed cut this year in 15 PGA Tour starts.

"I played really well, hit a lot of good golf shots," Mickelson said after mixing six bogeys with three consecutive birdies from the 12th. "I'm not disappointed at all.

"I hit a few shots on the front nine that were actually really good shots that left me no chance to recover and I ended up trying to come back, but fell a couple of shots shy there."

Former major winners Justin Leonard, fellow American Davis Love III and Spaniard Jose Maria Olazabal, plus last year's Greenbrier Classic champion Stuart Appleby of Australia, also failed to advance. — Reuters

Vettel storms back to take Hungary pole

Posted: 30 Jul 2011 06:07 AM PDT

BUDAPEST, July 30 — Formula One champion Sebastian Vettel roared back to form with pole position at the Hungarian Grand Prix today after his Red Bull mechanics worked through the night to get his car up to speed.

The German had failed to win the past two races but made sure Red Bull snapped up their 11th pole in 11 races this season, and 12th in a row, with his eighth of the campaign and 23rd of his career.

Australian teammate Mark Webber, second in the championship but a massive 77 points behind Vettel, qualified down in sixth place.

"I felt much more comfortable this morning," Vettel said. "I'm very pleased with the result; we changed a lot on the car overnight. The boys were working pretty hard and didn't get much sleep. I've got the confidence back."

McLaren's Lewis Hamilton, who won in Germany last Sunday when Red Bull's dominance from the first half of the season continued to ebb away, was quickest early on in the final session but had to settle for second on the grid after Vettel's flying last lap.

"Still I think it is a great achievement for us. Today they seemed to pick up a bit of pace," said the Briton, twice a winner at the Hungaroring.

Hamilton's teammate Jenson Button was third on the grid for his 200th grand prix but double world champion Fernando Alonso could only manage fifth for Ferrari behind teammate Felipe Massa.

Spaniard Alonso, who was 30 yesterday, appeared to be heading for pole on his final lap but again lost time in the final sector as he feared. It was the first time this year that Massa had outqualified the Spaniard.

Vettel also took pole in Budapest last year, when Webber won, but Red Bull had not been sounding confident in the run-up to this race after their recent mini-blip.

As fans filled the stands on the steep grassy bank next to the home straight, the usual suspects were knocked out in Q1 while Sergio Perez surprisingly beat Sauber teammate Kamui Kobayashi in the second session and then qualified 10th.

Seven times champion Michael Schumacher was just ahead of the Mexican rookie as Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg again outqualified his German compatriot by taking seventh on the grid.

The sun had shone for the day's final practice where Vettel topped the timesheets. However, the overcast conditions from yesterday, when Hamilton was twice quickest, returned during qualifying.

The forecast for tomorrow's race is mixed. — Reuters

New male vibrator claims to boost erections

Posted: 30 Jul 2011 02:12 AM PDT

Viberect promises to enhance erections and deliver stronger orgasms in men.

LOS ANGELES, July 30 – In recent days gadget bloggers such as Gizmag and Techgadgets have been buzzing about a new handheld gadget for men with erectile dysfunction (ED). Viberect, just approved by the US Food and Drug Administration.

The device promises to not only help men maintain rigidity without medications but also to deliver stronger orgasms.

The new male vibrator is geared for men with mild to moderate ED, including those undergoing rehabilitation after a prostatectomy, or those with spinal cord injuries, which can interfere with the ability to ejaculate.

To aid erections, Viberect is used about seven to ten minutes prior to sexual intercourse to stimulate penile nerves.

"Instead of relying on a little blue pill to get things ready for the bedroom, the device, which looks a bit like a hair crimper, delivers targeted nerve stimulation to both dorsal and ventral surfaces of the penis using medical Softpads," writes Gizmag.

The device will launch in the US after August 15, according to the website, and European sales will begin later this year. Price is US$300 (RM889.95).

Another option for men who have trouble maintaining erections is a product dubbed the "Viagra condom."

British biotech company Futura Medical has created the new condom, currently known as CSD500, that is coated on the inside with a vasodilator gel that increases blood flow and results in a stronger, longer-lasting erection.

The product is nearing final regulatory approval, and condom company Durex announced its aim to unroll the condoms in Europe by the end of the year.

Plans have yet to be announced on whether the manufacturers will apply for FDA approval to market the condoms in the US. – AFP

Jerry Lewis tight-lipped on telethon role

LOS ANGELES, July 30 — Veteran entertainer Jerry Lewis has brushed aside questions about media reports that he was retiring as host of the annual US telethon for muscular dystrophy, suggesting they were false.

Lewis, 85, announced in May that he would be making his final performance this September on the telethon, which he has hosted since 1966, and would sing his signature song "You'll Never Walk Alone".

At the time, the comedian and actor did not give a reason for the final appearance, but a spokesman for the Muscular Dystrophy Association said the programme would be changing its format from a 211/2-hour telethon on the US Labour Day holiday to a six-hour broadcast.

Asked to reflect on his upcoming final telethon appearance, Lewis told TV journalists here at a bi-annual gathering of critics that they should not believe everything they read.

"Who told you that? I never read it," he said. "Anything you read, read it twice."

Asked to clarify what his role would be on the telethon, Lewis refused to specify, telling another reporter. "It is none of your business."

He added: "I didn't mean to sound rude but on September 5, the day after that programme, I will have an international press conference . . . and I will have plenty to say about what I think is important and that is the future, not the past."

Lewis made his remarks while promoting an upcoming Starz TV documentary about his life in showbusiness.

Despite railing against reality TV shows and claiming that the life had been "sucked out" of the TV and movie industry by commercial pressure, Lewis described himself as "the happiest old man you ever, ever saw in your life".

Asked whether he felt he had fulfilled his destiny, he replied, "not yet, but I am coming close", adding that he would not be satisfied until he had helped "get the cure for muscular dystrophy". — Reuters

Statue for Chuck Berry erected in St Louis

Posted: 30 Jul 2011 07:34 AM PDT

ST LOUIS, July 30 — Rock 'n roll pioneer Chuck Berry, spry and smiling at 84 years old, gave a wave of approval yesterday dedicating an eight-foot bronze statue of himself before a cheering crowd of about 500 people.

The statue was erected in the Delmar Loop entertainment district of St Louis despite opponents who objected to the monument, citing Berry's legal troubles during his long career.

"I won't keep you long," Berry, wearing his trademark boating cap, told a crowd that gathered despite heat surpassing 90 degrees Fahrenheit. "I don't know how to speak, I just sing a little bit. I'm going to say thank you again, and I love you all."

Berry's rapid fire lyrics and revolutionary guitar riffs landed him in the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame and earned the lifelong St Louis resident a Presidential medal of honour.

He is listed by Rolling Stone magazine as one of the five top all-time rock acts along the Beatles, Bob Dylan, the Rolling Stones and Elvis Presley.

Berry, who first played in 1941, still performs every month at Blueberry Hill, across the street from the statue.

Among those sending greetings to Berry was Elvis Costello, who said he was glad to see a Berry statue "in St Louis where it belongs", and from fellow rock pioneer Little Richard, who called Berry "the greatest entertainer in the world".

Berry was joined at the podium by his wife, children and grandchildren, who joined his fans in singing "Johnny B. Goode", his signature 1957 hit, as the rock icon made his way through the crowd at the end of the ceremony.

A plaza near the statue features illuminated walls with laser-engraved musical notes of "Johnny B. Goode". Concrete strips in the sidewalk are etched with the lyrics of Berry songs.

Opposition to the statue came earlier this summer when a former city council member gathered 100 signatures aimed at delaying the installation. The opposition centred on felony convictions in Berry's early career, including a 1962 conviction for transporting a woman across state lines for immoral purposes.

Berry spent three years in prison, where he penned several songs, including "No Particular Place to Go".

Berry collapsed during a show in Chicago last New Year's Day but recovered in time to play his next show in St Louis, and showed no signs of ill effects at the dedication ceremony.

His next Blueberry Hill show is scheduled for August 17. — Reuters
