Italy’s Slow Food movement prepares giant food fair

Posted: 30 Sep 2012 06:55 AM PDT

ROME, Sept 30 — Italy's Slow Food movement announced plans this week to host the world's biggest gourmet food fair next month in Turin, with a focus on "the foods that change the world".

The Salone del Gusto fair will run from October 25-29 and bring together 1,000 exhibitors from 100 countries in Europe, North America, Asia and Africa, as well as 350 producers of traditional foods Slow Food is working to preserve.

The fair will run at the same time as a meeting of Terra Madre, a network of food communities across five continents including in the developing world.

"New policies on food can change the world," Slow Food founder Carlo Petrini told reporters in Rome, adding that the fair would also host around 40 conferences to discuss food rights, land grabbing and EU farm policy.

"Food has become just a good, particularly in Europe where farms are shutting down and farmers cannot survive on what they earn," Petrini said.

He called for a reduction in food waste, more education about food for children from a young age, and a strengthening of local communities.

Petrini said Europe should fund "a return to the land" by young people.

Petrini, a sociologist and former food critic, said he was pleased the head of the UN's Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), Jose Graziano da Silva, would attend the fair, which is held every two years.

Slow Food was founded in 1986 in reaction to the rise of fast food, and now counts around 100,000 members in 130 countries. — AFP/Relaxnews

Barca’s Thiago out for eight weeks with knee injury

Posted: 30 Sep 2012 08:55 AM PDT

MADRID, Sept 30 — Barcelona midfielder Thiago Alcantara will be out of action for around two months after damaging ligaments in his right knee in Saturday's 3-2 win at Sevilla, the La Liga club said on Sunday.

The promising Spain Under-21 international, who sat out the London Olympics because of a tibia injury, will miss 11 matches, starting with Tuesday's Champions League game at Benfica and Sunday's La Liga 'Clasico' at home to Real Madrid, Barca said on their website (www fcbarcelona.com).

There was better news for coach Tito Vilanova earlier on Sunday when captain and central defender Carles Puyol, playmaker Andres Iniesta and fullback Adriano were declared fit after injury and included in the squad for the trip to play Benfica. — Reuters

Real president tightens defences against non-members

Posted: 30 Sep 2012 08:54 AM PDT

MADRID, Sept 30 — Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has won the backing of members for statute changes that will make it harder for outsiders to seize control of the wealthy La Liga club.

The changes, approved at a general assembly in Madrid on Sunday, will mean presidential candidates will have to have been club members for at least 20 years, up from 10 years.

They must also personally provide a guarantee worth 15 percent of the club's budget - around 75 million euros (RM295 million) - rather than relying on any third party as has sometimes happened in the past.

A construction magnate and one of Spain's richest men, Perez told members he had nothing against "sheikhs or Russians" and was attempting to protect the club and its 70,000 members, who legally own the Spanish champions and elect the president.

"Sincerely, not just anyone can come here and take over the club, however much gift of the gab he has, and run it into the ground," Perez said.

"This is not a petanque club, it's the most important sporting institution in the world," he added.

"If a sheikh, a club member, wants to provide the guarantee let him come and do it, but it must be in his name.

"A third party cannot guarantee a candidacy because it is against the spirit of sport and against us.

"I don't want to think badly of anyone but this is a matter for our members and not outsiders."

Institutional stability

Perez is moving to shore up Real as its annual revenues soared above half a billion euros for the first time in the 2011-12 season.

Real made 514 million euros, up seven percent from the previous season and the most of any sports club, and returned a post-tax profit of 24.2 million, Perez said.

Net debt had shrunk to 124.7 million euros from 169.7 million and projected revenue for 2012-13 was 517 million, he added.

"There is no sports club, not in football or any other sport, that reaches this level of turnover," the 65-year-old said.

"Our economic leadership is a guarantee that we will maintain institutional stability and that we will remain in charge of the club."

Perez also gave details about the project to remodel the club's giant Bernabeu stadium in central Madrid and said the board were considering four proposals, all of which would include covered seating for the whole stadium.

Work was projected to begin after the end of the current season and would take three years.

"Our stadium is key to our identity and that's the reason we want to place it in the very front rank, transforming it into a global architectural icon." — Reuters

‘Parent power’ film stirs education reform row

Posted: 30 Sep 2012 03:34 AM PDT

LOS ANGELES, Sept 30 — Education reform film "Won't Back Down" has opened to terrible reviews — and high hopes from activists who expect the movie to inspire parents everywhere to demand big changes in public schools.

The drama stars Maggie Gyllenhaal as a spirited mother who teams up with a passionate teacher to seize control of their failing neighbourhood school, over the opposition of a self-serving teachers union.

Reviewers called it trite and dull, but education reformers on both the left and right have hailed the film as a potential game-changer that could help their fight to weaken teachers' unions and inject more competition into public education.

Private foundations, nonprofit advocacy groups and the US Chamber of Commerce have pumped more than US$2 million (RM6.1 million) into advocacy efforts tied to "Won't Back Down", including 30-second ads, promotional bookmarks, websites, private screenings and a six-month, cross-country discussion tour that will keep the film in circulation long after it leaves cinemas.

Their goal: To attract new foot soldiers who will help them fight for legislation that allows parents to seize control of local schools, as dramatised in the film; eliminates tenure protections for veteran teachers; and opens the door for more competition to neighbourhood schools in the form of charters, which are publicly funded but privately run.

"This movie has the potential to be one of the most transformative vehicles in the history of education reform," said Ben Austin, a long-time Democratic activist.

Austin now runs Parent Revolution, which promotes "parent trigger" laws allowing parents unhappy with struggling schools to take control, fire teachers and bring in private management.

His organisation is holding 35 private screenings of "Won't Back Down" in states from Georgia to Utah to New York over the next month to rally more parents to the cause. "This movie is telling a story that's relevant to hundreds of thousands of parents across America," Austin said.

Union leaders, for their part, have slammed the movie as a propaganda film that bears little resemblance to reality.

Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers, has called it "egregiously misleading" and complained that several scenes seemed designed for "the sole purpose of undermining people's confidence in public education, public school teachers and teacher unions".

Parent groups that support teachers' unions have organised protests outside some screenings. And they've been gleefully posting negative reviews of "Won't Back Down" on Facebook and Twitter.

Push for charter schools

So far, the reform coalition has ignored the bad reviews and pushed ahead with their marketing efforts.

The drive to capitalise on the movie grows out of lingering disappointment within the education reform community over the last major film to carry their message, the documentary "Waiting for 'Superman'."

Produced by Walden Media, which is also behind "Won't Back Down", the documentary chronicled dysfunction in urban schools and the desperation of parents trying to find alternatives for their children.

"Waiting for 'Superman' " was well-received and widely viewed, thanks to backing by the Gates Foundation. But activists hoping for a big boost from the film were disappointed.

"We didn't feel we captured anyone," said Matt David, a consultant to Michelle Rhee, former chancellor of Washington D.C. public schools and a major figure in the reform movement.

Many viewers walked out angry at the public school system, he said, but had no way to channel that emotion into action.

This time, Rhee is moving quickly to provide a channel. Her advocacy group, StudentsFirst, has bought 30-second ads to run before showings of "Won't Back Down" in 1,500 cinemas and sponsored marketing efforts to drive viewers to her website.

That website has been revamped to feature an "action centre" where people moved by the film can sign up to join StudentsFirst, view short videos about its agenda (including one from comedian and newly appointed board member Bill Cosby), and share their own experiences with public schools.

The website of the Centre for Education Reform urges viewers to launch their own charter schools to compete with public schools. "You don't need a PhD or a teaching degree to start a school," the centre advises on its website. "Remember, you can do it now."

The most enduring campaign linked to the film may be the six-month "Breaking the Monopoly of Mediocrity" tour arranged by the Institute for a Competitive Workforce, an affiliate of the US Chamber of Commerce.

Drawing on a US$1.2 million grant from the Daniels Fund, the group plans to stage private screenings and discussion forums for business and civic leaders in cities from Memphis, Tennessee, to El Paso, Texas, to Trenton, New Jersey.

The American Federation of Teachers is countering with its own series of town hall meetings and workshops across the country designed to present teachers — and unions — as natural allies of parents seeking to better their schools. — Reuters

India’s Oscars entry draws copycat flak

Posted: 29 Sep 2012 07:35 PM PDT

LOS ANGELES, Sept 30 — India's entry for best foreign language film at next year's Oscars has become the latest Bollywood movie to draw flak for allegedly plagiarising foreign hits in a "mash-up" of ripped-off scenes.

"Barfi!" has won over critics and cinema-goers for its portrayal of a love triangle between a deaf man named Barfi and two women, one of whom is autistic —  not typical subject matter in the prolific Hindi-language film industry.

But since its release two weeks ago, several videos have spread through YouTube and social media sites highlighting a number of scenes that appear to draw heavily from international classics.

Film buffs spotted stark resemblances with clips from Gene Kelly's hit "Singin' in the Rain" (1952), Jackie Chan's "Project A" (1983), Buster Keaton's "Cops" (1922) and "The Notebook" (2004) starring Ryan Gosling among others.

The plot has been likened to "Benny & Joon", the 1993 film starring Johnny Depp, while the soundtrack has drawn further comparisons with the musical score from "Amelie", the 2001 hit starring Audrey Tautou.

One of the clearest sources of inspiration is Charlie Chaplin: one scene shows Barfi dodging a policeman through a sliding door, just as the king of silent film did in 1917's "The Adventurer".

"Barfi!" director Anurag Basu has hit back at critics, saying the film is intentionally paying homage to Chaplin in a similar way to "The Artist", the black-and-white silent film that won Best Picture at this year's Oscars.

"If I would have changed the shot, twisted things around and made it my own it would have been stealing," Basu told the Indian TV show Headlines Today.

"I did shot-to-shot because they are famous iconic shots and scenes from famous masterpieces, every filmmaker knows them."

Bollywood has come under fire before for remaking Hollywood flicks in the Hindi language, but "Barfi!" is under particular scrutiny because the movie-mad country is yet to win an Oscar in the foreign film category.

"So why would an Oscar jury pick a movie that reminds them of the very many movies they've seen before —  and which include films that are now Hollywood legend?" asked online magazine Firstpost.

In one of several earlier Bollywood copycat rows, US studio 20th Century Fox submitted a US$1.4 million (RM4.3 million) claim in 2009 against BR Films over "Banda Yeh Bindaas Hai", alleging it was an illegal remake of "My Cousin Vinny". The case was settled out of court.

Image consultant Dilip Cherian worried that entering "Barfi!" into the Oscars could cause embarrassment for India in the long-run.

"The fact is that critics will start wondering at which stage does plagiarism end in Indian movies and at what stage is it inspiration," he told Headlines Today.

Only three Indians films have been shortlisted in the foreign film category at the Oscars: "Mother India" in 1958, "Salaam Bombay!" (Hello Bombay!) in 1989, and "Lagaan" (Land Tax) in 2002.

Manju Borah, who chairs India's selection committee, defended the latest choice.

"We selected 'Barfi!' because of its treatment and freshness," she told the Hindustan Times.

"In any case, every filmmaker is inspired by some cinema."

Film critic and curator Meenakshi Shedde said an "affectionate tribute" to world cinema, such as "Barfi!", was not the same as stealing someone's ideas —  but she doubted for other reasons whether the film was the best selection.

"The criteria the Oscars look for is something uniquely Indian. Something that offers insights into the culture or society," Shedde told AFP. —  AFP-Relaxnews

US bike-sharing site launches nationwide

Posted: 30 Sep 2012 08:09 AM PDT

The website Spinlister allows peer-to-peer bike rentals. — All rights reserved.

NEW YORK, Sept 30 — US residents who like to get around a destination on two wheels now have another option for bicycle rental as bike-sharing community website Spinlister has rolled out national operations.

After its launch in New York and San Francisco earlier this year, the Spinlister website, which uses a peer-to-peer model along the lines of car-sharing sites, has now gone nationwide. The roll-out comes with certain rules — all current users will be able to rent bikes anywhere throughout the country, but for new users, in order to rent a bike, they'll have to list their own.

Spinlister, a new startup based in the US, is following Airbnb's business model and applying it to bicycle renting. The website creates a marketplace between bike owners and those wanting to use a cycle to enable rental transactions. The new conditions announced on Wednesday aim to increase the number of listed bikes.

Users of the website can search for a bike based on their size and style, all parts of the transaction (finding the bike, contacting the owner and reserving) are done through the website. The security of the bike is the responsibility of the client during the rental period.

The website also offers advice on the best places to ride provided by the users as well as a list of bike repair shops. Rental rates range from US$10 (RM30.6) to US$100 for a day, depending on the model of the bike. Bike styles include road, mountain, folding, children and tandem bicycles.

Bike-sharing systems are already available in cities in Europe such as Paris, London and Barcelona. In the US the service has already been launched in a few cities such as Chicago (2008) and is expected to arrive in New York in the spring 2013. The peer-to-peer rental bike system is intended to be a substitute for official cycle sharing schemes in cities where the service is not available.

Violence stalks women workers in Afghanistan

Posted: 30 Sep 2012 04:32 AM PDT

Afghan women march to protest against violence towards women, in Kabul September 24, 2012.— Reuters pic

KABUL, Sept 30 — Muzhgan Masoomi's attacker stabbed her 14 times with a thick blade used to slaughter animals, tearing wide gashes in her flesh before leaving the government worker for dead on the outskirts of the Afghan capital.

With a severe limp and no control over her bladder - caused by the blade scraping her spinal cord - the 22-year-old can no longer work at the Ministry of Public Works, where she was a financial assistant before the assault.

Women who pursue careers in ultra-conservative Afghanistan often face opposition in a society where often they are ostracised - or worse, brutalised - for mixing with men other than husbands or relatives.

Despite commitments to better the rights of women 11 years into the NATO-led war, some say the authorities need to do more to prevent violence against women who work, particularly in government roles.

There are now fears that as the 2014 deadline looms for most foreign troops to leave, opportunities for women in the public sphere could shrink as confidence weakens in the face of continuing violence.

"I have no enemies, no links to gangs, and look what has happened to me. The situation for women in this country is getting worse day by day," Masoomi told Reuters in her brightly lit home, a few minutes' walk from where she was stabbed.

Shaking her long black ponytail, Masoomi said of her assailant: "He didn't like women working out of the house". He threatened her with menacing phone calls and text messages in the months leading up to the attack.

Her parents said the attacker, a relative who worked as a policeman, was now behind bars over the stabbing.

The security concerns of male government workers are taken more seriously than those of women, said Colonel Sayed Omar Saboor, deputy director for gender and human rights at the Interior Ministry.

"Women who work are much bigger targets than men and the government needs to acknowledge this," Saboor said.

How well female government workers are protected was called into question in July when a suicide bomber targeted and killed Hanifa Safi, regional head of women's affairs in eastern Laghman province.

Authorities ignored repeated requests for protection, her family said afterwards. Laghman officials declined to comment.

"She was so worried about her future. The only time someone in the police even addressed the issue of her security was once the Taliban had killed her," said her son, Mohammad Tabriz Safi, 30.

No support

Officially the government must provide security - usually two bodyguards - for ministers, members of parliament and tribal elders, said Interior Ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqqi.

But women not in those senior roles, such as Safi or Masoomi, are in dire need of protection simply because of their gender, Saboor said.

But Sediqqi said it would be "very difficult" for the police to provide security and guards for everyone who works in government. There are about 74,000 women out of 363,000 state employees.

Muzhgan has only recently gathered enough strength to talk about her ordeal, which happened in late March.

With a degree in accounting and some English, Masoomi was a valuable asset to her ministry, where she worked on a UN-funded Afghanistan Peace and Reintegration Programme, bringing former Taliban fighters from the battlefield back into jobs.

But she said not a single person from her ministry came to help her, or gave encouragement after the attack.

"They didn't even come to see me. Financially, morally, I got nothing," she said, adding that members of NATO's International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) took her to the hospital.

If she does not soon go abroad for surgery, she may never be able to work again. The ministry's deputy, Ahmad Farhad Waheed, said it had asked ISAF to look after her treatment, but the force said it was not down to them.

Afghan women have won back basic rights in education, voting and employment since the Taliban were ousted from power in 2001, but there is concern such freedoms will not be protected and may even be traded away as Kabul seeks a peace deal with the group.

"If a political solution between the Taliban and the government is reached, there is no doubt that women will need to be better protected," said Maria Bashir, the chief prosecutor for Herat province bordering Iran.

The only female prosecutor general in the country, Bashir has been threatened repeatedly and come under attack twice, when her house was set alight and another one firebombed.

Eight bodyguards escort Bashir to work each day, and six live in her house. All are paid for by the international community, she said. — Reuters

Pakatan tidak tolak RAPID, tidak setuju tanah diambil, kata Salahuddin

Posted: 30 Sep 2012 02:24 AM PDT

PENGERANG, 30 Sept — Pakatan Rakyat (PR) tidak menolak pembangunan projek Hab Penapisan Minyak dan Petrokimia (RAPID) di Pengerang, sebaliknya Naib Presiden PAS Salahuddin Ayub menegaskan, pembangkang mahu ianya dilaksanakan di kawasan tanah milik kerajaan, bukannya melalui pengambilan tanah kampung tradisi di sini.

Salahuddin Ayub: Terima pembangunan, tetapi "jangan musnahkan kampung tradisi". — Foto fail

An overseas education does not make you superior

Posted: 29 Sep 2012 05:24 PM PDT

SEPT 30 — I'll be the first to admit that our local education system is not the best in the world and if you get the chance to study abroad, by all means go!

Having said that, I have come across a certain arrogance and air of superiority among some overseas graduates. (Hence, leading to demands in starting salary and such.)

Before I start sounding like a sore loser who didn't get the opportunity to study abroad, let me admit that I was under a scholarship to study locally and also had the opportunity to do a distance learning course from the UK as well as a certification stint in Europe.

I have seen overseas graduates return to Malaysia armed with degrees from UK universities who ended up with their superiors berating them for poor reports written in English.

I also had colleagues who boasted about their Masters from Australia, hence demanding a higher pay check, who then performed poorly at the work place... well, certainly not befitting the salary they were demanding.

Admitting they were still learning would have made matters better but they continued to go on and on about how superior they were to local graduates and thus deserved their higher salaries despite not performing.

I am all for an overseas education but it is not a licence of superiority over local graduates.

And if you make a mistake despite having a UK degree, at least have the humility (or deflate your ego) to admit you were wrong.

I know outstanding local graduates who are doing well. For instance, two Rezas who are academically well trained locally come to mind. One is Muhammad Reza who is a successful businessman who was featured on "Seeds" (a TV magazine show in 2007). He was offered a scholarship to study abroad but turned it down.

The other is Azmil Reza, an editor who made his way to the top despite not being an overseas graduate. Then, there is Nim Nathan who earned her degree in English at a local university and has better English than some UK graduates.

There are many locals who cannot afford to study abroad who are at the top of their game through hard work, dedication and street smarts. An overseas education is ideal but not a necessity. To those without the opportunity to study abroad, I have this to say: "The world will recognise and reward talent and hard work."

To those who think they are above the local graduates just because of an overseas paper qualification, I have this to say: "Pride comes before a fall."

It is not the end of the world if you don't have a degree from abroad and certainly there is no shame in admitting it is difficult to get the opportunity to study abroad. If the opportunity comes, congratulations and all my best wishes. Just don't let it go to your head.

Dimanakah tahap profesionalisme Persatuan Bola Sepak Negara?

Posted: 29 Sep 2012 05:20 PM PDT

Apakah kita mahu melihat situasi sedemikian berleluasa?

Wine and your health: your questions answered

LOS ANGELES , Sept 30 — From protecting your heart health and lowering breast cancer risk to fighting off colds and gum disease, red wine is touted as a medicinal super food.

But before you crack open that bottle and toast your good health, here is what you need to know.

Is red wine healthier than white?

Yes, experts say, but not all grapes are created equal. White wine contains resveratrol but not as much as red, and scientists believe pinot noir grapes have the highest concentration of the compound.

Is wine fattening?

Actually, researchers from Purdue University say they've found a compound in red wine, grapes, blueberries, and passion fruit that blocks immature fat cells' ability to develop and grow. Studies find that people who drink wine daily have lower body mass than those who indulge occasionally; moderate wine drinkers have narrower waists and less abdominal fat than people who drink liquor. Plus, if you're going to drink, wine is the most calorie-friendly choice with a typical 20 calories per 28g.

Is it okay to drink wine, or any alcohol, during pregnancy?

It's complicated. A new series of studies from Denmark found that children of women drinking up to eight alcoholic drinks a week in early pregnancy showed no effects in terms of intelligence, attention, or self-control at age five. Yet many doctors still advise pregnant women to avoid alcohol altogether. Drinking during pregnancy, particularly heavy drinking and especially during the seventh and 12th weeks of pregnancy, has been linked to foetal alcohol syndrome, which causes serious developmental problems in children. This is a question best settled with your doctor.

Will drinking wine boost a woman's risk of breast cancer?

The jury is still out. Women who drink three to six glasses of alcohol per week have a 15 per cent higher risk of getting breast cancer than women who do not drink, according to research led by Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School. Yet in a conflicting study at the University of Calabria, Italy, the resveratrol compound was also found to block the cancer-fuelling effects of the female hormone oestrogen, as well as inhibiting the growth of breast cancer cells that have become hormone resistant.

Will wine reduce blood pressure?

There is research aplenty on the heart health benefits of a daily glass (or two) of red wine, but Dutch researchers discovered that the antioxidants in wine that account for the benefits don't reduce blood pressure.

Can I get all the health benefits of wine from drinking grape juice?

Maybe: According to the Mayo Clinic, some research studies suggest that red and purple grape juices may provide some of the same heart benefits of red wine, including reducing the risk of blood clots, reducing so-called bad cholesterol, and preventing damage to blood vessels in the heart. Some research suggests that whole grapes deliver the same amount of antioxidants that are in grape juice and wine but have the added benefit of providing dietary fiber.

Is wine healthier than beer or hard liquor?

Possibly: Multiple studies have show any type of alcohol, when consumed in moderation, offers life-extending benefits. But the polyphenols, resveratrol, and other ingredients common to wine have also been shown to prevent heart disease, slow muscle deterioration, and offer other health-boosting effects not found in beer or spirits. — AFP-Relaxnews

Chelsea win at Arsenal to continue strong start

LONDON, Sept 29 – Premier League leaders Chelsea beat London rivals Arsenal 2-1 with goals from Spaniards Fernando Torres and Juan Mata today to maintain their unbeaten start to the season while handing Arsenal their first defeat.

Both Chelsea goals came as a result of Mata free kicks with Torres benefiting from some poor defending by Laurent Koscielny to volley the European champions ahead at the Emirates Stadium after 20 minutes.

Gervinho equalised for Arsenal three minutes before the break when he turned crisply and fired into the roof of the net for his fourth goal of the season.

Chelsea, who started with John Terry as he mulls an appeal over a four-game ban for racist abuse, regained the lead after 53 minutes when Mata's free kick eluded everyone before clipping Koscielny and flying in past Arsenal keeper Vito Mannone.

The victory lifted Chelsea four points clear at the top, at least until the rest of the programme later today. – Reuters

Activity programmes do little to get kids moving, says study

Posted: 28 Sep 2012 11:01 PM PDT

A new British study finds that activity programmes for kids, such as extra-curricular exercise clubs, have little impact on children's overall daily activity, and hence on obesity rates. — Reuters pic

NEW YORK, Sept 29 — According to new research out this week, programmes designed to get kids moving have little impact on children's overall daily activity — with results equivalent to just an extra four minutes walking or running per day. To fend off soaring obesity rates, experts say that is clearly not enough.

Published in the British Medical Journal, the findings also showed that children who attended extra-curricular exercise clubs or PE classes did less activity at home afterwards.

Researchers from Plymouth University in the UK looked at 30 studies, involving more than 14,300 participants, that monitored activity levels of children under 16.

Brad Metcalf, lead author of the study, told the BBC that "extra-curricular PE lessons could often be far from energetic." He adds, "A PE lesson can be 10 minutes of running, 10 minutes of walking, and 20 minutes of standing in a queue waiting for your turn."

Also the BBC reports that kids may feel encouraged to snack more at home afterwards because they feel they have been more active, "or parents may decide not to take their children to the park because they believe they have already had their exercise for the day."

However new US research published this July in the journal Paediatrics finds that kids who play on several sports teams are nearly 40 per cent less likely to be obese. "Team sport participation had the strongest and most consistent inverse association with weight status," wrote researchers from the Hood Center for Children and Families at Dartmouth in Lebanon, New Hampshire.

In addition, the researchers also found that teens who walked or biked to school more than three days a week had a 33 per cent lower risk of obesity than those who took the bus or rode in a car.

The CDC in the US and NHS in the UK both recommend that school-aged children get at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day. —  Reuters

A letter from Indonesia: Shiites in Southeast Asia

SEPT 29 — Over Eid Fitri in Indonesia, news about the persecution of Shiite Muslims blared out daily in the Jakarta Post, Kompas and Jakarta Globe, to name a few. It has become more violent, and it is very surprising for a  country like Indonesia, which has a reputation of being open-minded and inclusive. Over 80 per cent of Indonesians are Muslims, and many still practice animist rituals and beliefs alongside their Muslim faith, and there are reputedly many inter-faith marriages. The Shiite Muslim persecution could well be the unveiling of a new Muslim Indonesia, which is of intolerance.

On August 26, 2012, Shiites in East Java were chased out of their homes, torched, killed by machetes, and are now believed to be in hiding in nearby forests and other areas in Sampang, Madura. In spite of the  violence they faced, the Shiites have expressed wanting to go back to work, and homes. They are not transplanted Indonesians from other areas; they were born and bred in Sampang. They're as native as a native can get, and yet their faith has ostracised a community against them.

United States Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is now in Jakarta for talks on the US-Indonesia Comprehenseive Partnership. The Human Rights Watch reported in its website on September 2, 2012, that "… (Clinton)  should raise concerns about religious minorities and political prisoners with the Indonesian … and (she) should press the Indonesian government to take concrete steps to address rising religious intolerance," said John Sifton, Asia advocacy director. "Indonesia needs to recognize that oppressive laws and policies against religious minorities fuel violence and discrimination."

Indonesian authorities have failed to adequately address increasing incidents of mob violence by militant Islamist groups in Java and Sumatra against religious minorities, including the Ahmadiyah, Christians, and Shia Muslims, The Human Rights Watch stated.

Earlier this month, The Jakarta Post reported,"Religious Affairs Minister Suryadharma Ali says converting Shiite Muslims to the Sunni Islam followed by most Indonesians would be the best way to prevent violent outbreaks between the sects in Sampang, East Java." He referred to "the local religious leader in Ciaruteun village in Bogor, West Java, who persuaded 15 members of the minority Muslim Ahmadiyah sect in March 2011 to convert to the form of Islam practiced by most Indonesian Muslims."

For the layman seeking to understand the Shiite-Sunni divide, a good primer would be Reza Aslan's book, No God but God. In short, the divide is about familial politics versus the Caliphates. The divide began when followers of The Prophet Mohammaed (PBUH) disagreed on the leadership of Islam, upon the Prophet's death. Shiites believe that it should be Ali, the late Prophet's son-in-law, to take up the rein.  This war still persists until today.

The Malaysian scenario

Now while it would seem that the Shiite Muslims of Indonesia are true Indonesians, what of the Shiites of Malaysia?

There is a small minority of Shiite Muslims (about 40,000 to 50,000) in Malaysia. Islam arrived in the country and around the region in the 12th century (or even as early as the seventh). Traders from India, Middle East and China came to trade, not conduct missionary work, though there were a few missionaries who came to the new land.  Who can say that the traders were Sunni Muslims, when history has alluded that some of the traders themselves were recent converts? Shiite Muslims are not a contemporary phenomenon.

Now, what of the recent arrivals of Iranians and Iraqis who have been changing the food and neighbourhood landscapes? Middleeastern fare is popular with Malaysians and tourists, and areas like Ampang and Bukit Bintang, once the havens of Caucasian expatriates, is dotted with Arab supermarkets.

There are about 60,000 Iranians living in Malaysia, and according to Property Report Asia, are some of the biggest property buyers. Many participate in the Malaysian My Second Home Programme. With their arrival (and food palate), come a new life that Malaysian Muslims are not comfortable with. Many Iranians keep dogs. For the canine-phobic observant Malaysian Muslim, seeing a dog in the home of a Muslim is akin to seeing the devil. Our young women swoon over Middle Eastern men's exotic looks. Locals can't understand it.

Let us assume that some, if not many of these Persian residents are Shiite Muslims. Add ours to the fore. Consider these:

•    What will the Malaysian government do now, when it is reliant on trade and business with these countries? Creating new mosques just for the Shiite foreigners is not a solution. That would be preferential treatment based on business.

•    The government and Malaysians will now have to seriously consider assimilation. Will Malaysia practise selective migration - choosing only Sunni Muslim professionals such as doctors, lawyers and such - so that there is no divide among Sunni Muslim Malaysians?

•    Does Malaysia focus on assimilation or integration? Is she able to when she cannot manage her own racial politics?

•    Will the international Shiite community have access to our resources, which is denied to Malaysia's own Shiite Muslims?

•    To integrate into Malaysian life, will intermarriage be allowed, especially with a Sunni Malaysian and Shiite expatriate/immigrant?

•    Lastly, will Shiite Muslims in Malaysia be persuaded to convert to the Sunni path?

•   While Indonesia Shiite Muslims want dialogue, it does not look that the Malaysian Shiite Community will be afforded an opportunity.

LOS ANGELES, Sept 29 – Top Asian actor-turned-director Stephen Chow will direct five films over the next seven years in a new deal with ChinaVision media group, beginning with the newest movie directed by Chow, an adaptation of the Chinese classic Journey to the West, announced ChinaVision this week.

The Chinese-language movie titled Chu Mo Chuan Qi, translated as "Slayer Legend," is expected to be released during the Lunar New Year in February 2013. The film release will mark the on-screen return of the Hong Kong-born star, who last appeared in front of the camera in 2008 in CJ7, which he also directed.

Hong Kong-born Chow hailed as the king of comedy in Asia and has a successful career marked by a string of box-office hits including Shaolin Soccer and Kung Fu Hustle.

His newest movie, reportedly in post-production, is a spiritual adventure movie and is expected to feature Chow's signature 'wu li tou' slapstick humour. The film will co-star other top Asian actors including Shu Qi and Show Luo.

This film is the second movie version of Journey to the West starring Chow, who played the Monkey God in the 1994 production, also known as A Chinese Odyssey.

Journey to the West is popular fodder for Chinese film directors and has seen numerous adaptations on television and in movies.

Published in 1592 by Chinese writer Wu Ch'eng-en, the novel is a fictionalised account of the pilgrimage of a seventh-century monk, Xuan Zhang, who has to travel to India to bring Buddhist scriptures back to China for translation.

As the journey is fraught with danger, the monk is assigned the protection of three bodyguards, including the Monkey King god. – AFP/Relaxnews
