Holy men, holy women 11

Posted: 24 May 2011 04:27 PM PDT

MAY 25 — Spot checks notwithstanding, I soon became less of a curiosity to the women; I was just one of the many relatives who came to visit the women at the pondok. My days and nights were a blur, as I joined the community in their prayers.

There were activities which had almost everyone excited. There was a flower arrangement competition that took me back to my student days and Kelas Serirumahtangga. There were talks, and one day, there was a homeopathy fair. Because it was so hot where we were, very few came to the booths to be treated.

The speakers blared out verses and prayers, and at one time, I thought they were recited by women. Tok M told me that it was the prepubescent orphans who read out the verses over the speakers. They were no different from other boys – when they were done with their classes and duties, they darted about the area, laughing and joking.

In the evenings, the women gathered at their friends' little homes. They all seemed to agree on one thing: one died alone, one's husband didn't follow one to the grave and only God is with you. Living there was good practice for the afterlife.

There was also a pecking order when it came to Jemaah prayers. Power and status came into play one day.

I had decided to pray at the front of the ladies' section because it was cooler, when one of the women pulled me back. I couldn't pray there because the wife of a VIP who had come to visit the commune, was joining in the prayers.

I protested. "I thought in Islam, there's no such thing…" She hushed me. "Even in Mecca they do the same!" Then she whispered, "You are right. If you really practise the real Islam, she'd be the same as us."

That night, there was a concert organised by the people who lived there. There was a very off-key all-male choir and a poetry recital. A silat performance by a bunch of young girls had the men chuckling and clapping at their feistiness.

However, it was a recital by a group of older men that broke my heart. The idea of these men, widowed, divorced and alone, living here, forgotten by their children, and seeing them cheering each other on as one fumbled through a song, hugging each other after their performance – it was a most uncomfortable experience. So this was old age. The women were right: you die alone. Only God's with you.

***

My last day at the commune can only be described as a macabre comedy.

It started with the usual dawn khutbah. We should emulate our Prophet's ways and the glorious days of Islam, once upon a time, the imam told us. I wondered why we Muslims always keep looking back to the past. Surely we have come far. Were the current crop of Muslims that bad?

I went back to Tok M's house, tired. I was grumpy. I wanted to go home. And two things happened, which drove me to call my taxi driver, G, to come at 3 in the afternoon, instead of at 5.

I had taken a nap. I dreamed that someone kept calling out, "Assalamualaikum! Dik! Dik! Open the door!"

I woke up with a start, to find a group of men at my room window, staring at me and calling out to me, to open the door, an ustaz from Thailand wanted to see the house, he wanted to build something like it in his commune.

I had mentioned earlier that it was hot over there. Sticky, muggy, smelly hot. Because of the humidity, I had taken a nap wearing only the top half of my baju kurung.

The men had seen me with the top part of my kurung all rolled and creased up to my navel, leaving my legs and undergarment exposed to the whole world.

Now I wonder whether I had either blinded them or made them flagellate themselves for seeing such sin. But at that time, all I could do was squeal.

After the "architectural visit", and once I had calmed down, I decided to take another nap. It was not to be.

Just as I had laid my head on the pillow, a banshee-like scream emanated from the house next to Tok M's.

"It hurts! It hurts!" a woman cried out.

I peeked through the window.

The woman kept calling out for help. Another woman started screaming for the ustaz. Women from the nearby houses ran and tottered to the house, tying their scarfs over their heads hurriedly. The group of men who had given me a heart attack earlier, arrived too, shouting, "Allahuakhbar!"

What on earth was going on? Tok M pushed me aside.

One of the women had been possessed by a demon.

Everyone shouted, "Allahuakhbar!" and immediately everyone had a story to tell. The area before it became the commune it was, was once the dumping site of bomohs. When a healing was done, they'd throw the spirits there.

Oh this used to be a jungle, so this could be a jungle djinn. More men and women thronged the house. I heard a man yell at the djinn to leave the place, the woman's body was not its to possess.

What a to do.

I crept to the corner of the house and called G. If I wanted any sleep and sanity, I'd have to go home.

At 1pm sharp, I was by the roadside.

"G?" I called out.

Glossy permed hair appeared from behind a lamp-post.

"Hallo Missy, you okay ka? Aiyoyo, I already knew. When you sms me to pick you up at 4, and then 3, and then 2, I came here by 12!"

The pondok I stayed at for about five days would be a considerable conversation topic at dinners, parties, forums. The people I had met would be thought of as freaks in rather sophisticated circles.

But I remember them, until today, for their simplicity and sincerity. They only wanted one thing: to devote their lives to Allah.

Be a somebody here or a nobody overseas?

Posted: 24 May 2011 04:26 PM PDT

MAY 25 — I often get asked by fresh graduates whether they should stay in Malaysia or build their careers overseas.

"It depends," I tell them.

If you're seeking a career in journalism or public relations, you would be better off staying in Malaysia. Both these fields are very much saturated in developed countries with heavy competition even for non-paying internships. Why should they pick a Malaysian over hundreds of local aspiring journalists or public relations specialists? I've met Australian journalism grads pursuing graduate degrees and doctorates simply because they find it hard to get entry-level journalism jobs.

Foreign newswires have presences here; you would have a better chance of working for Reuters in Malaysia than by applying in a foreign country. There are also plenty of international public relations firms here that will give you plenty of opportunities for advancement. Take my ex-colleague David Lian who is now the Asia Pacific social media lead for global PR firm Text 100. Besides Text 100, Hill & Knowlton, Burson-Marsteller, Weber Shandwick, Ogilvy and Edelman are among the reputable firms with strong presences in Malaysia.

I find the notion that the government is duty-bound to provide all the top scorers with scholarships repugnant. In the UK and US, student loans are a part and parcel of life — even the current president of the United States admitted to only having recently paid off his college loan debts.

Rather than expecting the government to foot the bill for all top scorers to study overseas, more institutions should provide grants, loans and partial scholarships for students wishing to further their education. The private sector needs to support local institutions and help better the quality of public education, making it accessible for all.

Why can't insurance firms, for example, provide grants or partially sponsor actuarial departments in public universities? Have banks, law firms, MNCs work with public universities to create programmes or pump in much needed investment.

Racism is a problem in our country and the polarisation between the races is something we need to address. Affirmative action in this country is a joke where instead of the poor benefitting, instead it is the rich elite of all races getting richer. It is time the citizens point out to politicians that while they are well-fed and live in palatial residences (I'm looking at you, Dr Mohamad Khir Toyo), there are plenty of Malaysians earning less than RM1,000 a month.

If you want to fix things in this country, then stay. The reality is that the changes you want to see will likely not happen in this lifetime. Your children might not benefit from the education or institutional reforms you fight for, but their children might.

Some people get frustrated that so few — the idealists, the visionaries, the crusaders — are fighting for so many. But hasn't that always been the case? It is possible to make small inroads, effect small changes but patience and willingness to commit for the long haul is needed.

If you told me 10 years ago, we would have an alternative press and not just a media that basically functions as government propaganda, I would have laughed. If you told me Selangor would be an Opposition state, I would have laughed even harder.

I wish PKR had a bigger vision than just to "topple Barisan Nasional." Let's face it, plenty in PKR's ranks are the same fat cat, greedy politicians we're used to. We have politicians but we do not have statesmen — people in it for the country and not for themselves.

Change is hard work, without glory or guaranteed reward. Malaysians, however, have become a spoiled lot, too used to a caretaker government that tells them how to think, what to think and who to believe. We cannot wait on the government because it has become obvious that most of those in power do not have the nation's interests at heart but the monetary interests of a chosen few.

I am tired of citizens expecting much but refusing to give much in return. You complain about racism, but send your children to vernacular schools. You call yourself Malaysian but refuse to even learn to speak Bahasa Malaysia. You complain about corruption and government inaction, but complain about traffic jams when your fellow citizens march to protest the very things you too abhor.

Some of you might sneer at me, saying I say all these things because I have neither the money nor the talent to go overseas. That's right, I don't. I make no pretensions about that. So I play my role the best that I can — as someone whose vocation lies in writing about things that matter for the people who matter: you.

Tanah runtuh: Kerajaan negeri Selangor cari tapak gantian sesuai

Posted: 25 May 2011 01:59 AM PDT

Posted: 25 May 2011 01:35 AM PDT

Happy Sharapova remembers tough times

Posted: 24 May 2011 08:12 AM PDT

PARIS, May 24 – Maria Sharapova reflected on the tough times she has come through after her emphatic 6-3 6-0 win over Croatian Mirjana Lucic in the French Open first round today.

Siberian-born Sharapova (picture) has overcome serious elbow and shoulder injuries which have hampered the career of the three-times grand slam champion.

"I don't think any road is particularly easy. If you don't have the tough days and if you don't go through adversity, I don't think that the good ones and the wins mean as much as when everything seems to be going our way," the 24-year-old Russian told a news conference.

"I've put a lot of work in starting from the off-season. I had a tough period in the beginning of the year, being sick for a while and having to wait to play a tournament," she added.

"I was just really positive. I trained really hard."

Sharapova has enjoyed springtime in Europe. "I have been to really cool cities in the last few weeks starting in Madrid and Rome and here, and I love walking around," she said.

"I find a lot of inspiration in street style and watching women walk, the way they wear things and what they're wearing. I take a lot of pictures. I do a lot of collages."

The Paris grand slam is the only one missing from Sharapova's collection but victory in the Rome International this month confirmed her return to form.

"As far as that motivation, it's really kicked in this year, and I hope I keep going with that," she said. – Reuters

Distraught family of DSK accuser look to God

Posted: 24 May 2011 08:47 AM PDT

LABE REGION, Guinea, May 24 — In a living room bare but for a few family photos and Islamic texts, the African man who says he is the brother of Dominique Strauss-Kahn's accuser says he has not slept or eaten properly for days.

"I heard the news on the radio and honestly I do not know what happened," the man, called Mamoudou, told Reuters at a village in the Labe region of Guinea, a hard day's drive north of the capital Conakry. "I want to speak to my sister."

Mamoudou, whose family name and home village are withheld to protect the identity of the alleged assault victim, said he had not heard from his younger sister for several years. But he had no doubt that she was the 32-year-old Guinean widow who filed the complaint in New York. Her name has appeared in local media.

In the community of devout Muslims, religion provides solace for those with troubles far away, and for poverty at home.

A hamlet of 20 dwellings lost in the rural depths of this impoverished West African country, Mamoudou's village is a world away from the luxury suite of the Times Square Sofitel where the now former chief of the International Monetary Fund and French presidential contender is accused of trying to rape the maid.

There is no electricity or mains water, and the village is accessible only on foot through dense forest. A few scattered agricultural tools and cows point to the subsistence farming that allows the residents of the hamlet to eke out a living.

"In our family, we are above material things," said Mamoudou, who is aged about 50.

"Even if you are a billionaire, we don't care. The most important thing for us is how you follow God's path."

Following up on details of his client given by US lawyer Jeffrey Shapiro, Reuters spoke to people in the Guinean expatriate community in New York, and to people in Conakry with roots in the Labe region, to trace Mamoudou and his family.

Widow's journey

Sitting with his half-brother Aboubacar, he points to a slightly out-of-focus photograph on the living room wall of a young woman in traditional West African dress looking at the camera, with little expression.

"After the death of her husband . . . she left the village because none of his brothers was old enough to marry her," Mamoudou said of his sister, referring to common local practice for widows to marry a brother of their late husband.

As the eldest of their parents' six children, it fell to Mamoudou to ensure his younger sister was cared for: "That's when I took her to Bambeto to learn to sew," he said.

Bambeto is a suburb of the capital, and offered the young widow the chance to learn a trade that could feed her and her child.

"(She) never created any problems for this family," Mamoudou said. "She was the quiet one. That's how she was brought up."

From Conakry, his sister made her way to the United States some years ago. Her lawyer has said her daughter is now aged 15.

Few Guineans have seen much benefit from the country's role as the world's top exporter of the aluminium ore bauxite. Per capita average annual income is US$407 (RM1,240), or just over a dollar day.

It was last year before Guinea held its first democratic election after half a century of independence from France that has been marred by coups, corruption and oppressive misrule.

Religion loomed large in the family under his father known locally as an Islamic scholar, Mamoudou said. That background, he said, made it hard for them to relate to the world of global finance, luxury hotels and allegations of sexual misconduct in which his sister has found herself embroiled.

"We have trouble understanding all this because it is not something we are used to," he said. "If my sister is saying what she is saying, given how she was brought up, I believe her." — Reuters

Cookies, potato chips, shirts help Indian inmates to new life

Posted: 23 May 2011 06:23 PM PDT

NEW DELHI, May 24 — A jail-based brand that includes crispy potato chips, crunchy cookies and formal shirts seems an unlikely route back to life in the outside world for inmates in South Asia's largest prison.

Yet efforts by the Tihar Jail complex in New Delhi to transform the lives of its inmates and prepare them for a fresh start through vocational training in diverse fields has created the successful TJ'S brand of goods.

Herbal products and school desks are also among the many products being manufactured and sold, well enough that prison authorities have set up a website to boost sales still further.

Sanjivan Rai, who is serving a term in Tihar Jail for marijuana trafficking, said the skills he was acquiring would help him find employment outside to earn a living with dignity.

"We can start our own business once we get out of here. We can maybe start a small snack-making unit," he told Reuters Television inside a bakery at Tihar Jail, as he took a break from frying potato chips.

"Even if we decide to seek work somewhere, whatever we learn here will only help us."

Life outside jail is still tough for former inmates, since they have to counter the stigma of having been in prison, which is seen as a place for social outcasts and hardcore criminals. This makes re-integration into society virtually impossible.

The idea behind the TJ'S label was to break these taboos and channel the inmates' energy constructively, while building their self-esteem, said Ram Niwas Sharma, deputy inspector-general of the Tihar Jail complex.

"You are going to buy goods made by prisoners ... He is going to get wages, so in turn you are going to help a family out there. A few thousand people are working in prisons so this way their families are benefited," he said.

"They are getting gainful employment, they are passing their time instead of idling around in the jail and they will be learning some kind of a skill and getting out of the jail with some worth(y) living conditions ... It is something which is good for the humanity."

"Made in Tihar" products had a turnover of 110 million rupees (RM7.35 million) last year, and this year it is expected to rise to 150 million, Sharma said.

Next year's target is an ambitious 230 million, reflecting growing acceptance of the jail brand.

At first, the bakery began to help fulfil the jail's massive food demand from its 11,500 inmates, who live in 10 prison blocks. But gradually operations were expanded to keep the inmates busy and channel their energies.

Mohammad Sajid, an inmate serving a life sentence, said that his newfound skills would help him once outside.

"The advantage of doing all this work here is that once we get outside, we can start earning through honest means and leave the path of crime," he added.

Officials say vocational training is just one of the roles being fulfilled by the jail as it strives to play the role of a correctional institution. Inmates are also taught meditation and yoga for their overall growth.

Prison authorities said the products were finding favour with buyers because of their good quality and competitive pricing, as profit is not their driving motive.

They are currently sold at prison outlets and shops situated in various Delhi courts, but officials plan to make them more widely available through tie-ups with retail stores.

"The people who make these products, they get some work and employment, which keeps them busy and benefits them," said Ruby Bagga, a customer at the Tihar shop.

"So instead of buying these products from somewhere else, why not buy them from here?" — Reuters

Lauren, Scotty bring country to ‘American Idol’ finale

Posted: 24 May 2011 03:36 AM PDT

LOS ANGELES, May 24 – Teens Lauren Alaina and Scotty McCreery sing today for the 2011 "American Idol" title in the TV show's youngest-ever, and first all-country music finale.

After 125,000 nationwide auditions and months of nail-biting eliminations, Alaina and McCreery will woo "Idol" judges and some 25 million fans with three songs each in the hope of winning a guaranteed recording contract.

Alaina, 16, from Georgia who has dreamed of appearing on the show since age 6, is the youngest person to reach the finale; McCreery, 17, from North Carolina, has a deep voice that belies his youth and has barely put a foot wrong.

But whichever contestant prevails when the votes are announced tomorrow – and predictions as usual are for a close race – country music may end up the real winner, some experts say.

"Either way they have two people who could do very well in country music. If you look at some of the biggest sellers of the past couple of years they have been Taylor Swift, Lady Antebellum and Miranda Lambert," said Yahoo! Music managing editor Lyndsey Parker.

Swift has sold more than three million copies in the United States alone of her November 2010 album "Speak Now".

Searches on Yahoo! for "American Idol finalists" have spiked 949 per cent this week ahead of 10th season climax of the most-watched TV show in the United States.

Alaina is getting nearly nine times as many searches as McCreery, according to Yahoo! data. But that doesn't guarantee that "Idol" is about to crown its first female winner since Jordin Sparks in 2007.

"People who are searching are not necessarily the people who are voting," Parker said, recalling that searches for 2009 finalist Adam Lambert far surpassed those of eventual winner Kris Allen.

Media measurement technology firm General Sentiment however found that McCreery was winning the social media buzz war, generating 30 per cent more discussion online than Alaina in the last five days.

"I do think Scotty is going to win, but I think it will possibly be the closest race in history of 'Idol'. And although Lauren will probably come in second, she will probably sell more records than Scotty," Parker said.

"She has more crossover appeal in the type of country she does, and even though boys tend to win on 'Idol', girls are dominating the real pop market place right now." she added.

Country singer Carrie Underwood, who won "American Idol" in 2005, is the contest's top earner with 12.2 million albums sold and a clutch of Academy of Country Music awards.

"American Idol" also has plenty to celebrate after its first year without caustic British judge Simon Cowell. After four years of falling ratings for broadcaster Fox, the overall audience is up four per cent this year at 24.8 million regular viewers.

That's partly due to a shake-up on the judging panel that brought in Jennifer Lopez and Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler to join veteran Randy Jackson – and with them a kinder, more supportive vibe.

After dismal sales for recent "American Idol" champions, record company Universal Music will be hoping that Alaina or McCreery can work some country music magic on their post "Idol" careers. – Reuters

Michael Crichton posthumous novel to be published

Posted: 23 May 2011 05:52 PM PDT

LOS ANGELES, May 24 — Late author Michael Crichton, whose novels have been adapted into movies such as "Jurassic Park," will have a new posthumous novel "Micro" published on November 22, publisher HarperCollins said yesterday.

Crichton had only written a third of the thriller when he died of cancer in November 2008. Writer Richard Preston, best known for such scientific suspense novels as "The Hot Zone" and "The Cobra Event," was chosen by the publisher and the Crichton estate to complete the novel, the publisher said.

"Micro" is about graduate students working in Hawaii for a mysterious biotech company. They end up cast out into the rainforest and forced to fend for themselves with only their scientific expertise and wits to protect them.

Besides the unfinished manuscript, Preston also had access to the outline, a bibliography of nearly 100 books and DVDs, as well as notes and research.

"I was driven by a desire to honour the work and imagination of one of our time's most visionary and creative authors," Preston said in a statement.

Husam sah tanding semula jawatan naib presiden PAS

Posted: 24 May 2011 03:15 AM PDT

Posted: 24 May 2011 02:58 AM PDT

Saifuddin berkata Ketua Pemuda Barisan Nasional itu memperlihatkan pendirian menyokong kenaikan harga barang ketika Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi memegang jawatan perdana menteri.
