Drinking milk could prevent arthritis in women, shows study Posted: 10 Apr 2014 05:59 PM PDT April 11, 2014 In a recent study, milk proved to be more effective than yoghurt or cheese at slowing the progression of knee arthritis. – AFP/Relaxnews pic, April 11, 2014.Drinking low-fat or skim milk could slow the progression of knee arthritis, according to a recent study published in Arthritis Care & Research, the journal of the American College of Rheumatology. While cow milk certainly has its detractors, its role in promoting healthy bone structure has long been established. This latest study provides additional evidence in favour of the beverage, particularly for women at risk of developing osteoarthritis of the knee. A chronic degenerative condition, osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common form of arthritis. Seen most frequently in women over age 50, osteoarthritis causes sustained pain and swelling of the joints due to abnormal deterioration of cartilage and bone. In the US, according to the Centers for Disease Control, 27 million people suffer from osteoarthritis, and the knee is among the joints most commonly affected. Risk factors for osteoarthritis include advanced age, obesity, prior injury or repetitive use from some types of sports. Dr Bing Lu, together with a team of researchers at Brigham & Women's Hospital in Boston, sought to investigate a possible link between dairy intake and the progression of the disease. The study looked at a sample population of 888 men and 1,260 women (3,064 knees in total), all between the ages of 45 and 79. Each volunteer reported how often he or she consumed milk, yoghurt and cheese, and the researchers measured joint space width between the femur and the tibia in the knee. The participants returned for a follow-up every 12 months over a four-year period. "Our findings indicate that women who frequently drink milk may reduce the progression of OA," said Bing Lu. Interestingly, the study did not indicate similar benefits from eating cheese or yoghurt. – AFP/Relaxnews, April 11, 2014.

Romania keeps ancient tradition of bee medicine alive Posted: 09 Apr 2014 10:17 PM PDT April 10, 2014 Apitheraphy is a form of alternative medicine which has been around since ancient times, and Romania is working to keep the tradition alive. – AFP pic, April 10, 2014.Bee venom to combat multiple sclerosis, pollen for indigestion, honey to heal wounds – the humble bee has been a key source of alternative medicines since ancient times, and Romania is working to keep the tradition of "apitherapy" alive. The tradition goes back to ancient Greece when Hippocrates applied honey to treat wounds, and the Romans saw pollen as "life-giving". In the past of India, China and Egypt, a resinous substance collected by bees from the buds of certain trees, known as "propolis", was popular as an antiseptic. "The hive is the oldest and healthiest natural pharmacy," said Cristina Mateescu, director general of the Institute for Apicultural Research and Development in Bucharest. Today in the wilderness of Romania's Carpathian mountains, honey bee products are still a familiar part of traditional medicine. "In my village, my great-grandmother was a healer and used products from beehives. She inspired me," Dr Mariana Stan told AFP. Having spent years as a conventional doctor, Stan now practises in Bucharest as an "apitherapist" – using bee products "which give slower but longer lasting and more profound results". In a country still infused with folk culture, several families continue to use propolis against sore throats, as well as honey and pollen to boost the immune system. Apitherapy pioneer Every town in Romania has its "plafar" – natural pharmacies selling products made from plants, honey, beeswax and propolis. "Romania is a pioneer of apitherapy, which it recognised very early as a component of scientific medicine," said US professor Theodor Charbuliez, head of the Apimondia Commission of Apitherapy, a group that brings together thousands of practitioners from around the world. Modules on apitherapy have started to work their way into more conventional medical classes and extracts from propolis developed by the Apicultural institute into recognised medicines. Founded in 1974, the institute employs 105 people who look after local bee colonies and sell around 30 approved products. A new range even seeks to treat cats and dogs with bee-related products. Bucharest also boasts an Apitherapy medical centre, the world's first, which opened in 1984. Scepticism remains among the regular medical community in the absence of scientific studies about the effects of bee venom, but many users are full of praise and welcome the cheap costs and environmentally friendly approach. Doina Postolachi comes twice a week to the medical centre to receive injections of bee venom, or "apitoxin". The 34-year-old poet says the injections have allowed her to "rediscover hope" in her fight against multiple sclerosis. "For a year, I could no longer walk or get into my bath. My feet were stuck to the ground. But today, the venom treatment has given me back strength in my legs. I walk, I can take baths," she said. She said she has never wanted any regular pharmaceutical treatments "which come with numerous side effects". Bees do wonders There has been mounting interest across the world in apitherapy. In 2013, Washington University in the US city of St Louis published a study on the efficacy of milittine, a toxin contained in bee venom, in countering the Aids virus. In France, thousands of patients have benefited from bandages treated with honey at the abdominal surgery department of Limoges hospital. Bee products are also infiltrating the cosmetics industry, used in skin-toning and anti-wrinkle creams. Part of the appeal rests with the natural and organic image of bee products. "In Romania, we have the chance to maintain an unspoiled nature," said Cornelia Dostetan, a member of the National Apitherapy Society. Under Communism, poverty meant that pesticides were rarely used and the country has never shifted to large-scale monoculture forms of agriculture. The result is that Romania retains a great diversity of flora, said Dostetan. Certified organic, the Romanian brand Apiland, a specialist in raw pollen, has launched its products in France and Italy. According to the last agricultural census in 2010, Romania counted 42,000 beekeepers and more than 1.3 million colonies of bees. Postolachi says she looks on the bees with "immense gratitude". No evidence to back effectiveness of homeopathy, says Australian report Posted: 09 Apr 2014 09:21 PM PDT April 10, 2014 There is no reliable evidence to back the effectiveness of homeopathy, according to a new National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) report. This means people could be putting themselves at risk if they use homeopathic medicines instead of conventional treatment, the Australian Associated Press (AAP) said. The Australian discussion document is written by researchers who looked for evidence to back the use of homeopathy to treat 68 health conditions. The authors could not find any study to show homeopathy is more effective than placebo for treating ailments including a cough, ear infection and acne. They described many of the pro-homeopathy studies as poorly designed with too few participants to give a meaningful result. They, however, found studies showing homeopathy was no better than placebo for several conditions, including dental pain, migraine, warts and colds. "Homeopathy should not be used to treat health conditions that are serious, or could become serious," the researchers led by Bond University's Professor Paul Glasziou said to AAP. In their study, it was suggested that "Those who use homeopathy should tell their conventional health professionals, and should keep taking any conventional medicines that they have been prescribed,". NHMRC chief executive officer Professor Warwick Anderson said health care choices should be based on good quality evidence. However, the organisation is "acutely aware" of the strong views about homeopathy, "which is why the draft information paper is available for public comment until May 26," he said. – Bernama, April 10, 2014.

Book review – The Corpse Exhibition and Other Stories of Iraq Posted: 09 Apr 2014 06:15 PM PDT BY EMMANUEL SURENDRA April 10, 2014 'The Corpse Exhibition and Other Stories of Iraq' is available at any major bookstore. – The Malaysian Insider pic, April 10, 2014. What makes a good war story – say, on Iraq or Afghanistan – is not the humdrum musings of an army vet or the good deeds of a philanthropist who one day decides to set up a school for the impoverished locals. War is hell and any story or account worth reading is one that depicts hell and all its siblings – among others, rape, death, poverty, betrayal – at its best. Baghdad-born author Hassan Blasim speaks about war-torn Iraq from the eyes of paranoid politicians and bottom-feeders. His work is fiction, of course; its sentiments are anything but. For Blasim, the best-known approach to write on post-Iraq War is to craft 192-pages of short stories written in an absurdist manner from an Iraqi perspective, and neatly tuck all of them in between matte black covers with "The Corpse Exhibition and Other Stories of Iraq" for a title. So the first chapter bears an eponymous title and talks about the initiation into a circle of assassins where killing is art – the more artful the kill, the more braggadocios the killer. The protagonist, of course, is a would-be assassin and there's all the necessary violence and gore you'd expect: "I like concision, simplicity and the striking image. Take Agent Deaf, for example. He's calm, and he has a smart, lucid eye, and my favourite work of his was that woman who was breast–feeding." Midway there's "The Iraqi Christ" which is about an Iraqi Christian who usually cheats death but ends up being forced to be a suicide bomber just so his mother will live to see another day. And the last chapter, perhaps the most powerful of the entire series, is "The Nightmares of Carlos Fuentes" which tells the story of an Iraqi immigrant wanting to seek refuge in Amsterdam. The storytelling technique Blasim employs throughout makes the book a compelling read. One device he uses freely is where the protagonist submits himself to committing an act – only for him to later question either the reality of the action or its effect. And as the book progresses, so does his main actors: first the assassin, then the older brother with a penchant for incest, then the Iraqi Christian, the crossword puzzle-maker, the writer, culminating with the immigrant. Whether this was done deliberately can't be ascertained – but for a book that lacks a chronological framework or even an easily discernible context, it's a good progression. Bear in mind that Blasim's background – of being persecuted by Saddam Hussein in 1998, of seeking refuge in a Kurdish part of Iraq and then producing a controversial film about the place in 2004, and of migrating to Finland in the name of artistic freedom – are very much embedded in each story. This book will go well for lovers of Carlos Fuentes, Rod Serling, Julio Cortazar and Roberto Bolano, or any author who employs magical realism to describe grim realities. Blasim's latest is his third book. English prose here is courtesy of Jonathan Wright's translation – the original is in Arabic. And if that name rings any bells, it's because while on assignment for Reuters in 1984 in Lebanon, Wright spent a week as a hostage before escaping. Comic book character Archie dies in series conclusion Posted: 09 Apr 2014 05:51 PM PDT April 10, 2014 Archie Comics publisher has revealed that Archie Andrews will die in the conclusion of a flash-forward series this summer. – AFP/Relaxnews pic, April 10, 2014. Archie Andrews, the fictional red-headed, American teenager in the popular "Archie" comics, will die in the conclusion of a flash-forward series this summer, according to its publisher. In the series of his adventures after high school and college, the iconic comic character will die while saving the life of a friend in "Life With Archie #36" in July. "We've been building up to this moment since we launched "Life with Archie" five years ago, and knew that any book that was telling the story of Archie's life as an adult had to also show his final moment," Archie Comics Publisher and co-Chief Executive Officer Jon Goldwater said on the website www.archiecomics.com. He added that the story will be available in multiple formats, including magazine size, two comic-size issues #36 and #37, and a paperback of the entire story. "Life with Archie #36" will detail his final moments, while "Life with Archie #37" will show how his friends are coping without him a year after his death. A spokesman for the comics said the events in the flash-forward series will not affect Archie in the present-day series. His adventures and stories as a teenager will continue. The Archie series, with characters such as Jughead, Betty and Veronica, have been running for decades. Naratif satira P Ramlee (Bahagian 2) Posted: 09 Apr 2014 06:09 PM PDT April 10, 2014 Dinsman atau nama sebenarnya Che Samsudin Othman adalah budayawan, penulis dan sastrawan. Beliau menulis untuk kepuasan dan kebebasan berkarya. Apek kena tipu oleh P Ramlee, atau Jamil namanya dalam Madu Tiga. Selamba sahaja dia menipu. Memang dalam filem ini penuh dengan adegan menipu. Hidup Jamil penuh dengan menipu. Dia tipu isterinya Latifah dia nak pergi makan kenduri, sebenarnya dia nak pergi kahwin. Dia tipu keluarga bakal isteri mudanya kata dia sudah dapat izin isteri tuanya untuk kahwin lagi satu. Bila dua-dua isterinya dapat tahu mereka dimadu, lagilah macam-macam adegan menipu ditunjukkan. Tak cukup Jamil yang menipu, bapa mertuanya pun ikut sama berpakat menipu, termasuk menipu anaknya sendiri, bersubahat dengan menantunya yang berkahwin lagi. Dan Jamil ini memang jenis lelaki pantang tengok perempuan cantik. Baru saja kahwin isteri kedua, jumpa dengan Rohani dia terus jatuh hati lagi. Kahwin lagi isteri ketiga, dengan mengaku/menipu yang dia masih bujang, belum pernah kahwin. Begitulah, sebenarnya, P Ramlee mentertawakan orang yang kahwin lebih daripada satu isteri. Hidup terpaksa menipu satu demi satu demi satu dan terus menipu. Itulah Jamil. Kalau mengikut falsafah absurd atau cara fikir absurd, sepertimana mereka melihat Waiting For Godot (mahakarya absurd oleh Samuel Beckett) itu sebagai menggambarkan hidup yang penuh kehampaan, menunggu dan terus menunggu sesuatu yang tak kunjung tiba; maka di sini kita juga boleh melihat Madu Tiga sebagai menggambarkan bahawa kehidupan ini penuh dengan penipuan atau aksi-aksi menipu. Manusia yang ingin mencapai kebahagiaan dalam hidupnya, atau ingin memenuhi keinginan dirinya (seperti nyanyi P Ramlee: "Senangnya dalam hati, kalau beristeri dua; seperti dunia ana yang empunya), maka dia terpaksa hidup seperti Jamil dalam Madu Tiga. Benar atau tidak – itulah pandangan P.Ramlee. Satu perkara yang agak pelik – kita tak marah kepada Jamil walaupun dia asyik menipu isteri-isterinya. Dan saya rasa orang perempuan pun tak marah. Saya tak pernah dengar ada orang marah kepada P Ramlee kerana watak Jamil dalam Madu Tiga yang hidupnya penuh dengan menipu. Kenapa kita tak marah kepada watak jahat ini? Menipu itu 'kan jahat? Sebenarnya dalam filem ini kita tak terfikir dan tak terasa pun yang watak Jamil itu jahat. Sistem nilai yang membezakan baik dan jahat dalam diri kita seolah-olah tak berfungsi apabila kita menonton filem P Ramlee. Aspek kelakar dan lawaknya itu yang lebih menguasai perasaan dan minda kita. (Betulkah begitu? Saya pun tak pasti. Tetapi saya perhatikan – begitulah. Misalnya dalam Ali Baba Bujang Lapuk, P.Ramlee jadi ketua penyamun. Adakah kita marah dan bencikan dia kerana menyamun harta orang? Tidak. Sebaliknya kita suka tengok dia berlakon dan kita ketawa dengan kelakar dan lawak lakonan dia; walaupun yang dia lakonkan itu ialah watak manusia jahat yang suka menyamun harta orang.) 3. Tiga Abdul Satu lagi filem P Ramlee yang saya suka ialah Tiga Abdul. Ia lebih kurang macam Musang Berjanggut juga – kritikan atau kritik sosialnya begitu hebat sekali. Jelas, walaupun dengan cara menyindir; tepat mengena pada sasaran; dan kena itu begitu kuat sekali. Orang-orang yang tamak haloba dan hidup mengejar kekayaan wang dan harta telah dihukum oleh P Ramlee dengan hukuman yang cukup berat, iaitu semua harta kekayaan mereka dirampas dan mereka dijatuhkan taraf menjadi hamba abdi. Cuba kita ingat kembali ceritanya. Tiga Abdul – Abdul Wahab, Abdul Wahid, Abdul Wahub. Cara P Ramlee memberi nama kepada watak-watak dalam filemnya, pun satu keistimewaan. Ismet Ulam Raja – bapa kepada tiga orang Abdul itu, seorang saudagar kaya. Itu bukan nama biasa. P Ramlee mencipta nama-nama yang di luar kebiasaan, tetapi menarik, hingga menjadi sebutan orang. Sadiq Segaraga – seorang lagi saudagar kaya. Dia ada tiga orang anak perempuan – Hamidah, Rafidah, Ghasidah. Dan ada satu lagi nama yang menarik dalam filem ini – Husein Lempoyang, saudagar unta yang beli Abdul Wahab dan Abdul Wahid ketika dijual sebagai hamba di pasar hamba abdi di kota Isketambola. Ismet Ulam Raja ialah jenis saudagar atau bisnesman yang sanggup buat apa saja untuk merebut harta kekayaan, waimma menjual anak perempuannya sendiri. Di sini kita lihat plot cerita atau naratif yang menjadi trade mark P Ramlee, yang khas cara dan gayanya, termasuk lakonan. Ada satu plot cerita yang istimewa, yang sengaja diadakan atau direkacipta, semata-mata bagi membolehkan P Ramlee memasukkan maksud dan menonjolkan mesej sesebuah karya. Kebanyakan filemnya dibuat begini. Misalnya dalam Tiga Abdul apa yang dia buat? Dia buat syarat dalam perjanjian perkahwinan anak-anak Ismet Ulam Raja. Ini filem keluaran 1964. Orang Melayu-Islam berkahwin, ada perjanjian dan syarat, yang dibuat oleh peguam. Dan peguam itu menjadi rakan kongsi sebagai penasihat. Ada komisyen 20 persen. Kemudian naik kepada 25 persen. Yang ini kemudiannya menjadi begitu popular apabila menteri-menteri kita termasuk Perdana Menteri dikatakan mengambil komisyen terhadap kontrak-kontrak dalam projek-projek kerajaan – Perdana Menteri 10 persen dan sebagainya. Dalam Tiga Abdul kahwin mesti sain kontrak. Tak tahu samada masa itu sudah berlaku atau belum. Sekarang sudah berlaku. Syarat yang dibuat oleh P Ramlee itu memang tak pernah dibuat orang. Syaratnya saja sudah kelakar dan nakal. Menantu tak boleh marah kepada mertua walau apapun yang mertua buat. Kalau marah, kena jual. Mana pernah berlaku macam itu dalam realiti kehidupan? Tetapi itu yang P Ramlee buat. Mertuanya bagi syarat Abdul Wahab dan Abdul Wahid tak boleh makan. Hanya boleh cium ambil baunya saja. Dan tak boleh tidur bersama isteri dalam bilik. Mesti tidur dalam kandang kuda. Tak masuk akal punya syarat. Absurd. Tapi masa menonton kita tak fikir pun pasal itu. Kita hanya ketawa kerana kelakarnya cerita itu dan kelakarnya lakonan. Dan cerita itupun mengalir terus seperti yang direka cipta oleh P Ramlee. Tak timbul langsung soal logik dan tak logiknya mengikut realiti. Sebab apa? Sebab cerita atau naratif P Ramlee bukan naratif yang mengikut lojik realiti kehidupan. P Ramlee ada naratifnya sendiri. Naratif hasil rekaan dari kekuatan imaginasi dan kreativitinya. Di sinilah terbinanya satira filem-filem P Ramlee. Dalam Tiga Abdul ditimbulkan perlawanan siapa yang lebih pandai/cerdik membuat supaya lawannya menjadi marah hingga tak dapat menahan rasa marahnya. Kalau siapa marah, dia kena jual sebagai hamba. Syarat dan undang-undang ini wujud untuk beberapa orang watak dalam filem ini saja. Tak ada polis dan mahkamah yang hendak menguatkuasakan undang-undang yang sengaja direkacipta itu. Tetapi walaupun begitu, oleh kerana filem itu filem dia maka dia sendiri melaksanakan undang-undang itu. Oleh kerana Abdul Wahab dan Abdul Wahid marah, maka Ismet Ulam Raja merampas semua harta mereka dan mereka dijual sebagai hamba di pasar hamba abdi di negeri itu. Tak kiralah negeri itu di zaman mana pun. Ada kedai muzik jual gitar dan ada muzik pop dan menari twist, tapi ada juga pasar hamba abdi. Tak mengapa. Dalam logik P Ramlee apa-apa pun boleh. Macam logik absurd juga. Dalam filem Madu Tiga, bapa mertua Jamil buat peraturan untuk Jamil. Tiga hari tak boleh balik rumah sebab kena kerja overtime – alasan tipu. Tetapi peraturan itu dipersetujui dan diikut tanpa soal oleh isteri-isteri Jamil. (Maka jalanlah ceritanya. Kalau tak, tak berjalan ceritanya). Dalam filem Anak Bapak P Ramlee buat mahkamah dalam pejabat. Mahkamah olok-olok. Tetapi perbicaraannya betul, dan hukuman serta dendanya pun betul. Maka berjalanlah ceritanya. Kalau tak, tak berjalan ceritanya. Beliau adalah presiden Kumpulan Sasterawan Kavyan (Kavyan) dan pemilik tunggal Perunding Media, Motivasi dan Penerbitan Uthaya. Selain menulis, membaca dan bercakap, beliau juga suka menonton filem. Pak Samad gemar berkongsi pengalamn dengan khalayak muda."Samad Taata (datuk) nampak semakin kurus dan kurang sihat," komen anak saya, Devishi Prabha Sankari, selepas bertemu Datuk A Samad Said (Pak Samad) pada 26 Jun 2011 sempena Konvensyen Penulis di Shah Alam. Devishi yang mengenali Pak Samad sejak lahir turut menambah dengan penuh bangga: "Tapi Samad Taata masih kuat macam Gandhi Taata (Mahatma Gandhi)." Pak Samad dilantik sebagai Penasihat Agung Kumpulan Sasterawan Kavyan (Kavyan) pada 2003. Sudah beberapa kali pihak tertentu (persatuan penulis?) menasihatkan, memujuk, menghasut serta memaksa beliau melepaskan sebarang ikatan dengan Kavyan dengan alasan bahawa kami anti-Melayu; semata-mata kerana Kavyan memperjuangkan konsep "Bahasa Malaysia, Bangsa Malaysia" dan berkempen "Tolak Perkauman, Raikan Kepelbagaian". Seperti dapat dijangkakan, Pak Samad tetap bersama-sama Kavyan. Hubungan rapat dengan Kavyan sejak lebih sedekad lalu – serta perkenalan saya dengan Pak Samad sejak Ogos 1991 – membantu saya mengenali sisi-sisi lain karya-karya beliau. Selain daripada apa yang dibaca di akhbar, majalah, blog dan buku, perbualan bersama-sama Pak Samad juga "mendedahkan" pelbagai perkara – termasuk mengenai Sungai Mengalir Lesu. Dengan membaca novel ini, kita tahu bahawa ia memaparkan derita hati nurani kelompok manusia kurang berpelajaran yang menjadi mangsa peperangan. Pembaca boleh merasai sendiri penderitaan, kesedihan, sayu, kekacauan, suasana cemas, resah dan pelbagai emosi lain yang disajikan secara terang-terangan berdasarkan penelitian, imaginasi dan pengalaman Pak Samad sendiri pada usia kanak-kanak. Semasa membaca Sungai Mengalir Lesu, saya tidak sekadar membayangkan suasana di sekitar Sungai Rochore yang mengilhamkan sungai yang menjadi latar penting dalam novel ini. Saya turut membayangkan Pak Samad sebagai seorang kanak-kanak yang benar-benar kembali berada di latar tempat itu untuk menyaksikan semula apa yang berlaku pada tahun 1940-an. Memandangkan Pak Samad adalah seorang pembaca dan penulis yang teramat teliti, saya membayangkan juga bagaimana beliau melakukan renungan, mengimbas kenangan perit zaman kanak-kanak, merakamkannya dalam bentuk kata-kata dan tulisan, serta melakukan saringan demi saringan, suntingan demi suntingan. Seterusnya beliau menyusun plot bagi membolehkan kisah yang melibatkan sekumpulan masyarakat pelbagai kaum, agama dan latar belakang disajikan dalam sebuah novel yang singkat, padat tetapi mengungkapkan sejarah dan permasalahan yang amat besar. Memancing pembaca dengan pancing naratif Saya mementingkan narrative hook iaitu "pancing naratif" pada cerita. Aspek ini juga sering ditekankan dalam bengkel penulisan cerpen anjuran Kavyan. Secara mudah, perenggan pertama perlu mampu memancing minat pembaca. Unsur-unsur dramatik, suspens, tanda tanya dan gambaran visual boleh dimanfaatkan bagi mencapai tujuan ini. Wajar dinyatakan bahawa membaca bahagian awal setiap bab Sungai Mengalir Lesu umpama menonton babak pembukaan bagi drama dan filem bertaraf antarabangsa. Ilustrasi oleh Azam Ridzwan juga membantu merangsang imaginasi pembaca. Dengan memanfaatkan dan memanipulasi ketajaman mata pena, penguasaan bahasa, ketelitian mata dan minda, serta imaginasi berdasarkan pengalaman silam, Pak Samad umpama seorang jurukamera profesional dan pengarah filem bertaraf Oscar yang membawa pembaca "menonton" secara langsung setiap adegan yang sedang berlangsung. Sudah dinyatakan bahawa kisah-kisah dalam novel ini pasti diambil daripada pengalaman penulis. Perkara ini diakui sendiri oleh Pak Samad – secara langsung atau tidak langsung – dalam perbualan kami yang biasanya meliputi pelbagai topik dan bidang pada setiap kali berpeluang untuk bertemu. Watak-watak yang ditampilkan dalam Sungai Mengalir Lesu – Maaf, saya sangat lemah dalam mengingat nama/watak – tentu bukan lahir daripada imaginasi semata-mata. Sebaliknya tentu sahaja "dipanggil" (recall) daripada zaman kanak-kanak Pak Samad. Saya dapat membayangkan Pak Samad berdiri sebagai seorang kanak-kanak berumur sekitar lapan tahun di tebing (atau di sekitar) Sungai Rochore yang mengalir lesu sambil memperhatikan beberapa orang Jawa, Cina, Punjabi (Benggali), India-Muslim (Malbari) dan sebagainya sambil melakukan catatan mental supaya watak, perwatakan, kisah, perasaan dan penderitaan mereka boleh disajikan semula sebaik mungkin dalam sebuah karya sastera. "Menulis itu resah yang bahagia, duka yang indah," seperti diakui Pak Samad menerusi judul pidato penerimaan Anugerah Sastera Negara pada 25 Februari 1986 di Dewan Besar, Universiti Pertanian Malaysia (UPM), Serdang. Karya Pak Samad terus malar Pengalaman perang yang zalim pada usia kanak-kanak terus "menghantui" pengarang ini sehingga semacam "memaksa" beliau merakamkan segala kegelisahan dan keresahan itu dalam bentuk karya. Apa-apa yang tidak dapat diluahkan sepenuhnya menerusi Salina, diluahkan menerusi Sungai Mengalir Lesu. Apabila segala pengalaman, penderitaan, kemanusiaan zaman perang serta falsafah anti-perang sudah disajikan dalam bentuk karya, amatlah adil dan wajar sekiranya seorang sasterawan mengharapkan agar karya-karyanya dibaca, diteliti, dihayati dan ditekuni oleh khalayak (pembaca). Malah, atas dasar dan keinginan itulah juga novel Sungai Mengalir Lesu yang sudah banyak kali diterbitkan dalam pelbagai edisi diterbitkan semula oleh Wira Bukit Sdn Bhd dengan kerjasama Gabungan Bertindak Malaysia (GBM). Majlis pelancaran rasmi pula berlangsung pada 1 April 2014 di Dewan Perhimpunan Cina Kuala Lumpur dan Selangor (KLSCAH). Sasterawan yang senang didampingi peminat.Hasil penelitian, saya dapati ada beberapa pihak yang sebelum ini tampil untuk membantu Pak Samad dan Wira Bukit Sdn Bhd menerbitkan karya-karya Pak Samad. Tetapi sebenarnya, mereka juga seolah-olah bermotif mengaut keuntungan dan bukannya niat ikhlas membantu seorang sasterawan untuk menerbitkan karya-karyanya. Kita yakin dan penuh percaya GBM tampil membantu dengan penuh ikhlas dan niat murni. Semoga sokongan dan bantuan dana tidak terhenti setakat Sungai Mengalir Lesu, sebaliknya diteruskan bagi penerbitan semula beberapa lagi karya agung Pak Samad. Jika tidak, GBM sama sahaja dengan beberapa pihak sebelum ini. Sebagaimana Pak Samad memulakan setiap bab dalam Sungai Mengalir Lesu dengan pancing naratif atau narrative hook, begitu jugalah beliau mengakhiri setiap bab – termasuk bab terakhir – dengan unsur kejutan dan teknik tergantung. Biarlah saya juga mengakhiri perkongsian pandangan di sini dengan cuba memanfaatkan teknik yang sama. Apakah Pak Samad, seorang penulis sepenuh masa dan Sasterawan Rakyat yang sudah "dipinggirkan" dan "dipulaukan" kuasawan kerana kelantangan bersuara, akan dibiarkan terus resah dan gelisah setiap kali bukunya terbit? Atau Rakyat – The Third Force – yang kagum dengan keberanian dan perjuangan Pak Samad akan sudi tampil memberikan sokongan yang amat diperlukan golongan sasterawan – iaitu dengan membeli, memiliki, membaca dan menghayati karya yang terbit. Tepuklah dada, tanyalah selera sementara sungai khazanah ilmu bernama "Abdul Samad Mohamed Said" masih mengalir di tengah masyarakat. Atau apakah kita hanya tahu menghargai nilai sebatang sungai selepas ia berhenti mengalir dan sudah tiada bersama-sama kita? – 10 April, 2014. Selangor akui selenggara 10 banglo Exco membazir Posted: 10 Apr 2014 02:42 AM PDT OLEH JAMILAH KAMARUDIN April 10, 2014 Exco Selangor mengakui penyelenggaraan 10 banglo di Seksyen 7, Shah Alam merupakan satu pembaziran.Kerajaan Selangor mengakui berlakunya pembaziran wang RM6 juta untuk menyelenggara 10 banglo kediaman Exco yang jarang digunakan di Seksyen 7, Shah Alam. Exco Kerajaan Tempatan, Kajian dan Penyelidikan Datuk Teng Chang Khim mengakui kualiti banglo terbabit sangat teruk walaupun baru dibina pada tahun 2008. Katanya, berlaku banyak kerosakan termasuk siling runtuh dan kebocoran paip sehingga ada Exco memutuskan untuk keluar dan enggan tinggal di situ. "Apabila kami menerima kunci, didapati banyak kerosakan walaupun rumah itu dibina kurang 10 tahun lalu," katanya kepada pemberita di luar Dewan Undangan Negeri (DUN) hari ini. Bagaimanapun, beliau berkata perkara itu tidak dapat dielakkan dan Exco memutuskan untuk menjadikan premis tersebut sebagai tempat perjumpaan, mesyuarat dan majlis keraian sahaja. Justeru tidak wajar untuk mendakwa bahawa kerajaan negeri Selangor membazir kerana tidak menggunakan sepenuhnya banglo seperti yang didedahkan oleh Laporan Audit Negara 2013. "Kita mewarisinya sejak tahun 20008, kalau semua 10 Exco menghuni banglo tersebut atau tidak jumlah penyelenggarannya sama juga, orang tinggal atau tidak kena bayar juga. "Nak jual tak boleh, nak sewa orang tak nak duduk," katanya. Laporan Audit Negara 2013 kelmarin mendedahkan kerajaan Selangor membelanjakan sebanyak lebih RM6 juta untuk 10 unit rumah kerajaan yang jarang digunakan. Laporan itu juga mendapati rumah kerajaan itu pernah disewa pada sekitar tahun 2010 hingga Jun 2013 tetapi kadar sewa itu jauh lebih rendah berbanding perbelanjaan bagi kerja penyelenggaraan dan kos utiliti yang berjumlah RM6.24 juta. Ahli Dewan Undangan Negeri Sungai Pinang itu berkata, pihaknya akan meneliti kontrak penyelenggara dan akan membatalkannya jika mendapati kos terlalu tertinggi. "Kita akan lihat (kontrak penyelenggaran rumah tersebut) jika terlalu tinggi kita akan batalkan dalam masa terdekat ini," katanya. – 10 April, 2014.

Jumlah caruman bersih KWSP selepas pengeluaran RM15.23 bilion Posted: 10 Apr 2014 02:26 AM PDT April 10, 2014 Kumpulan Wang Simpanan Pekerja (KWSP) berkata, ia mencatat caruman sebanyak RM50.58 bilion berbanding pengeluaran RM35.35 bilion, menjadikan aliran masuk bersih sebanyak RM15.23 bilion tahun lalu. Dalam Laporan Tahunan 2013 yang dibentangkan di Parlimen hari ini ia berkata, pengeluaran umur 55 tahun mengatasi pengeluaran lain pada RM13.23 bilion, meningkat 8.5% daripada RM12.19 bilion pada tahun sebelumnya. Pengeluaran di bawah Skim Pelaburan Ahli merupakan pengeluaran kedua terbesar pada RM7.85 bilion. Pengerusi KWSP, Tan Sri Samsudin Osman berkata, objektif utama KWSP adalah untuk membolehkan ahli mempunyai simpanan mencukupi semasa bersara. "Oleh itu, bagi memastikan ahli mendapat faedah sepenuhnya daripada simpanan persaraan mereka, kadar caruman 11% dan 12% dikekalkan untuk umur 55 hingga 60 tahun berbanding kadar separuh sebelum 2013," katanya. Jenis pengeluaran lain yang menunjukkan peningkatan berbanding 2012 ialah Pengeluaran Perumahan RM4.95 bilion, Umur 50 Tahun (RM3.84 bilion), Pendidikan (RM338.14 juta) dan Kesihatan (RM43.13 juta). Menurutnya, pada tahun sama KWSP meningkatkan pelaburan dalam infrastruktur IT dan perkhidmatan elektronik melalui pelancaran e-Caruman dan e-Pengeluaran yang bertujuan memudahkan transaksi untuk ahli dan majikan. Samsudin berkata, dalam usaha memenuhi kehendak ahli yang celik IT, terutama golongan muda yang merangkumi kira-kira 35 peratus daripada jumlah ahli, KWSP terus memanfaatkan kemajuan teknologi dan meningkatkan kemudahan dalam taliannya. Katanya, KWSP baru-baru ini melancarkan aplikasi mudah alih "EPF i-Akaun" bagi membolehkan ahli memantau simpanan mereka bila-bila masa dan di mana sahaja. Laporan Tahunan itu juga melaporkan kejayaan KWSP dalam aspek pelaburan meskipun ekonomi dan pasaran global yang lembab. Strategi pelaburan berhemah, katanya membolehkan KWSP mengisytiharkan kadar dividen 6.35% untuk tahun kewangan berakhir 31 Disember 2013, bayaran dividen tertinggi sebanyak RM31.20 bilion kepada ahlinya, meningkat 13.66% berbanding RM27.45 bilion pada 2012. Jumlah ahli KWSP meningkat 2.48% kepada 13,922,194 daripada 13,585,007 pada tahun sebelumnya, sementara jumlah majikan juga melonjak daripada 502,863 pada 2012 kepada 517,062. Samsudin yakin polisi pengurusan risiko dan strategi pelaburan berhemah akan membantu KWSP melindungi modal selain memastikan pulangan optimum untuk jangka panjang. Venezuelan gastronomic festival to be held in KL Posted: 09 Apr 2014 09:02 PM PDT April 10, 2014 The Venezuelan Embassy will be organising a cultural and gastronomic festival titled the "Sounds and Flavours of Venezuela" in Kuala Lumpur, as the preamble of the 9th Venezuelan Week 2014. Its Ambassador to Malaysia, Manuel Guzman, said the event which will be held on April 22 to 27, at the La Boca Latino Bar, Pavilion Kuala Lumpur, will showcase Venezuelan food diversity and cultural richness of the South American country. "We will offer a range of typical Venezuelan food such as the 'Pebellon Criollo', a traditional dish of exquisite combination of shredded beef, white rice and black beans and the 'Asado Caraqueno', a delicious staple food of Venezuelan cuisine made of beef coated with a sweet dark sauce filled with flavour and irresistible aroma," he said during a media conference, here today. He said the gastronomic festival is a tribute to the unique food found in the village cafes, city neighbourhoods and shoreline seafood shacks of Venezuela. Apart from that, the festival will feature Venezuelan dance and music all week long with live music on April 25 and 'Salsa Brava Night' on April 27. Malacca’s kitchen of varied palates Posted: 09 Apr 2014 07:59 PM PDT BY MELISSA DUIS April 10, 2014 A must try when visiting the Portugese Settlement – the mango, fish and roe pickles, as well as a special concoction of Cincalok specific to the Malaccan Portuguese community. – April 10, 2014.Domestic tours may often be unfortunately perceived as less exciting than those to foreign lands, but the ancient Malacca always has its way of surprising the average sightseer, even one that is local to Malaysia. When an unplanned excursion to the Portuguese Settlement of Ujong Pasir, Malacca was added to the itinerary – much to the slight disarray of the day's tour guide – an unexpected chance awaited us. Jerry and Christopher are two locals who manage the Portuguese Heritage Melaka Museum. – April 10, 2014.As we entered the Portuguese Settlement and approached the locals, two friendly men who managed the museum, and gave their first names as Jerry and Christopher duly rose to the occasion; for behind them, the Portuguese Heritage Melaka Museum had just caught our eye. Dainty from the outside but homey and charming on the inside, the marvellously modest doors of the museum were opened to us for what we thought would be an ordinary history lesson. Upon entering, we were reconciled with the renowned crab which bore a cross on its shell, blessed by St. Francis Xavier, the Malaccan Portuguese forbade each other to dine on this said crab ever since that miraculous incident. More mementos caught our minds' eye but the most indelible mark was made by none other than a few simple home recipes of our Malaccan Portuguese hosts. The Malaccan Portuguese culture is so amalgamated in nature that its provenance may very well be likened to a quilt passed down the hands of progenies from layers of generations. And along with that wealth of culture and history, their recipes have also taken interesting turns to tease the palates of many curious travellers then and now. When we first arrived, our hosts forewarned us that we wouldn't leave without stopping by the food section and true to his word, after his 20 minute tour around the bonny museum, some attractively packaged jars and bottles caused us to stop a while before making our final exit. We were treated to a brief explanation and curious sight of warm reds and oranges that were neatly tucked away in glass containers. Upon closer attention and inspection we learnt that these were 3 types of pickles and a special concoction of Cincalok specific to the Malaccan Portuguese community. The three types of pickles were mango, fish and roe pickles coated in a rich hue of red that was reminiscent to another popular Malaccan dish – Devil's Curry. We walked away with one of each of the pickles and one bottle of Cincalok. Aside from a list of "how-to" on enjoying our purchases, our host also told us that their special mix of Cincalok was spiked with alcohol – a friendly warning to those who don't consume alcohol. Home again, and this average Malaysian sightseer wastes no time in digging into her newly acquired possessions. Holding on to every word of our Malaccan Portuguese companions, I try every single pickle on steaming hot, white rice. And obediently, I prepare a full teaspoon of the Cincalok with one lime, one shallot and one big chilli. Another recipe for the Cincalok is an omelette prepared as below: Beat one egg with a teaspoon of Cincalok and fry with shallots. The verdict: Fantabulous, scrumptious, sumptuous and bud-tantalizing. The pickles primarily have a sweet and sour flavour to them but have different degrees of acidity. Their flavours consistent with whether the main fodder is fish, roe or mango but one thing for sure is these pickles are bursting to the brim with seafood goodness. As for the Cincalok, its freshness and zest brings you as close as possible to a fisherman's feast. For a place so entrenched in historical importance, it is commendable how the Portuguese Malaccans have held on so steadfastly to their ancestors' ways, down-to-earth and as pristine as any community can get in today's modern age and yet keeping fully abreast with today's know-how. I suppose at the end of the day, any good Portuguese Malaccan knows that to enjoy a good traditional meal is like reconciling past and present in one yummy sitting. – April 10, 2014.

A confident PSG carried a 3-1 home win into the return leg at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday, but the French giants were outfoxed by Jose Mourinho's team as the 2012 Champions League winners prevailed 2-0 on the night to advance on away goals. While Laurent Blanc's team had promised to stay true to their attacking philosophy, they were dominated in possession and despite a good start, were toothless up front in the absence of their injured talisman Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Chelsea played with intelligence and the patience of a side with belief in their own strengths, an inner trust drawn from four semi-final appearances in the seven previous seasons. They refused to be unsettled by an early injury to Eden Hazard, who made way for Andre Schuerrle, with the German opening the scoring in the first half. "Experience made the difference. Chelsea are more used to playing these games than we are," Blanc told reporters. With the aggregate score at 3-2 in PSG's favour and 45 minutes remaining, the visitors had to choose between defending what they had or trying to score the goal that would have almost certainly been enough to ensure a passage through to the semi-finals. Blanc was unable to make that choice. "In the second half, with a one-goal advantage, we were in an awkward position," explained right back Christophe Jallet. "Should we attack or stay in position? We allowed space between our lines and it became complicated. We did not have our usual grip on the game." In the absence of Ibrahimovic, Blanc opted to field Edinson Cavani up front and to put Lucas on the right wing, leaving out Javier Pastore, whose technical skills would have helped PSG retain the ball when Chelsea were looking to turn the game into an end-to-end contest. Brazil forward Lucas, who has not scored in his last 28 games in all competitions, instead ran through the midfield with his head down, often missing the obvious pass near the box and ending up losing the ball. Yet former national coach Blanc, whose tactical choices were questioned when France lost 2-0 to Spain in the Euro 2012 quarter-finals, left him on the pitch when he decided to send Pastore on after 73 minutes and took Ezequiel Lavezzi off. With Cavani having an off day, PSG failed to score for the first time since last December and just like last year when they went out to Barcelona, were knocked out on the away goals rule in the last eight. Demba Ba, the Senegalese striker born in the Paris suburbs, scooped in the winner in the 87th minute as PSG paid the price for their lack of ambition on the pitch. "In the second half, we were pinned back in our half," Blanc admitted as his team only enjoyed 46% of possession over 90 minutes. "I am disappointed, even if we have to admit Chelsea are more experienced than us," PSG president Nasser al Khelaifi said. "We were close. We have not won this tie, but we have gained experience for the future." PSG have spent more than 200 million euros (RM892 million) on transfers since being taken over by Qatar Sports Investments in 2012, with a five-year plan to win the Champions League. Despite trimming PSG's 3-1 aggregate lead through Andre Schuerrle, Chelsea were heading out of the competition until Ba bundled home in the 87th minute of yesterday's quarter-final second leg at Stamford Bridge to send his team through on away goals. The London club's comeback carried echoes of their 2012 success over Napoli, when they overcame a 3-1 first-leg loss in the last 16 with a 4-1 win before going on to beat Bayern Munich on penalties in the final. While Mourinho has often declared that his team are a work in progress – and described the victory over PSG as "nothing extraordinary" – he said the belief that his players had shown augured well for the last four. "We're in the semi-finals and if the quarter-finals had eight fantastic teams, imagine the four that are going to reach the semi-finals," he said. "Anything can happen. A big opponent is waiting for us in the semi-finals, but I think it doesn't matter who. They know that we are the team with special spirit, even if we are not at the maximum of our potential." Asked if he would like to face former club Real Madrid in the last four, Mourinho replied: "No. It doesn't matter. Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atletico (Madrid), Bayern Munich, Manchester (United), it doesn't matter." Mourinho regularly complains about the lack of top-level goal-scorers in his squad and he hailed Ba's decisive contribution after electing to send him on instead of Fernando Torres in the 66th minute. "It was not to celebrate. It was to tell the players how we have to play the last minutes," he said. For PSG it was a second successive quarter-final defeat on away goals, after last season's elimination at the hands of Barcelona. "We can't hide behind that," he said. "You guys (journalists) often denigrate Ligue 1 compared to the Champions League, but we can't always use that as an excuse. We can't change it.
